Ok I can't emphasize enough how helpful this video is for a beginner bike diy painter like me :) Thanks! I've watched dozens of bike painting videos and when to sand (and why!) was always a really big mystery and pretty confusing :)
I've watched a few of your videos, but haven't seen the solution to my problem. Apologies if you've covered it in a other video: I've finished the clear coats, but because of my setup, I ended up with clear coat over spray on the seat and chain stays. Along with a couple of other minor imperfections, I'm curious how you finish off the clear coat in this situation: wet sanding, compound, polish, or a combination?
Thanks. I normally use water to clean of the frame after completing the sanding to remove all the material ive sanded off. However, you could wipe it off with a damp rag. But you need to be very careful.
Cheers Mate! I was "Wet" sanding after every stage.. But when it got to clear coat i wasnt sure, your explaination made me realise and understand even if the 1st and 2nd coats of clear isnt perfect or there's imperfection.. i dont sand straight away.. i let it cure for 1-2 days.. But i wet sanded not dry sanded before apply 2 round of clear after.. is there a diff? Wish i saw this video earlier ffs.. respraying my cars bonnet/hood and boot cover.. I was sanding 3 hours on hood then primer 1 coat resanded dry 1/2 day then 2nd coat then resanded.. Took me 4 days to do it and my arms were numb and cramping for 1 day.. Cheers!
The upside with wet is that you continually rinse away the “dust” and it’s easier to see the progress, avoid sanding too far and that you get larger grains, dust that scratches the surface. Also “dust” free. 👌
I paint on the logos and Graphics with stencils instead of decal stickers. Makes a much more professional and durable finish. They can be painted on directly on the base coat or in between two layers of clear coat. The first layer needs to be fully cured and sanded for the paint to stick. 👌
@@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT I agree paint stencils look very good but I am doing a restoration that uses oe water transfer style decals. Same process though?
I'm redoing my egg chair, not a bike but this is super helpful, tough not what I wanted to hear (as an inpatient Adhd gremlin). What grit do you recommend for supper uneven spray primer?
It’s consuming your time and patience. 😉 I would say 600-800 grit. To coarse and you risk to get scratches shining through, to fine and the adhesion will be effected. 👌
Hey, i made a mistake of painting my motorcycle with a 1k primer. Its been around 3 days and it still feels not fully dry. Sanding the primer makes it cake the sandpaper, but when i push on it really hard it does not leave any finger marks. Can i paint 2k acrylic paint over it or should i completely strip it off and prime it with 2k primer?
Sounds strange that a 1k primer would not be dry after a few days. But for best adhesion (on steel) I would remove the old paint and lay down a 2k epoxy direct to the metal. To remove 1k paint, all you need is some thinner and wipe it off. 👌
@@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT i did a mistake by buying a hardware store primer instead of automotive. It has an alkyd base and i read on the internet that aparently it can dry for up 2 weeks
@@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT thanks, bought the solvent, xylene as its called in english and the shit primer just wipes off. I was really scared that i would ruin my project
I agreed with you 100% until I felt my final 1k base coat with my hand as the last 5 base coats all lightly sanded before this final base coat painted over the entire panel so every coat blends equal on the entire panel with the last total base coat. The microfiber towel stuck like Velcro but not dramatically like my Sandable 1 or 2k primer of 5-6 sanded coats in between those primer coats prior. I then wiped the final base coat down with microfiber towel easing the previous Velcro effect to semi smooth; /No extreme grabbing but glass like ? Not even close. I will wet sand the final 1k total coat , to slippery of the microfiber towel. Here when I spray the 2k clear how long to 2nd coat? and do I 3000 that coat before clear 2 or is this supposed to be smooth as glass where I need not wet sand this coat? Before clear 3? These are premium automotive rattle cans and your 2k clear I haven't depressurized yet as the panel has it's final finish base coat 5 hours ago.
Ok, I don’t completely follow, but as I say in the vid, 1k paint is not to be sanded. But it’s also important that you use products/spray systems that are compatible. If you don’t, you can get bad reactions with wrinkles, bubbles and bad adherence. Also, It sounds like a lot with 5 coats of base coat? Normally you can spray the clear coat on the base coat and hour or so after applying the last coat of base, but read the technical information sheet that goes with the paint. For the 2k clear coat, lY down 1 light coat, wait 5-20 min (again check the tech sheet) and lay down another a bit heavier coat if you think It’s needed, apply another coat after 5-20 min. Let it cure for at least 24 h, if low temp and high humidity in your area, wait even longer. Then apply a final flow coat. 👌 I hope that answers your questions and helps you forward.

Are the seat and chain stays clear coated, and then got additional overspray? In that case, yes sand and polish. 👌
great video and clear explanation it cleared many doubts thank you
Thanks 🙏
Brilliant, great explanation and in for, many thanks

When you have to use water after sanding? Do you have to wash it with water? Great video by the way, I final understand 👌

Welcome! 👌
what if theres a bumpy dust particle on the base coat should i not sand it?
problem is when i top coat it. the particle is now embedded to the surface.
Sure, that’s a different thing. I would try to pick it up with a tweezers or similar. If not possible, use a very fine sandpaper and take it out. 👌
@ Thank you!

Jason, when in the process of clear coat do I add my decals?
