It's always the pause that gets me because if you're familiar with how things work when they work, you'll notice how it's taking a second too long, and before you rationalize it you get dragged into the abyss
Every single time I got this screen I would start to panic like crazy. After many years, I think I finally get why I was so scared of it: the sounds and visuals are like a perfect metaphor of your PS2 system slowly dying.
Yeah me too, what makes it scary was the transisition from grey to red and the background sound, when i was still little everytime it crashes like that i always had to ask my cousin to fix it
I swear to god, when this happened to me as a kid, my ass got so scared that I ran out of the room, even saying that “I hope my ps2 isn’t mad at me anymore.” Lmao.
Mine takes a while too but it eventually works, it goes to the menu screen first then it works after like a minute, and it’s super annoying and I don’t why it does that
When I was a kid I got RSOD for the first time, and I ran upstairs and cried for an hour fearing for my life. From that point on, the PS2 startup gave me anxiety and whenever I booted up my PS2 I used to run upstairs and come back down until the startup was complete.
This has gotta be one of my most traumatic memories as a child by far. This screen almost feels alive. Like you're descending into hell for simply having a dirty disc. My ps2 was used when i got it, and had alot of issues with how sensitive it would be with reading discs. So because of that, this screen popped up quite a bit. Everytime when it did, i would scream, cry, then run to my mom with how scared i was.i would get her to turn it off with how scared it was lol. Then i would have nightmares trying to turn it off and unplugging it, but would still be on, or it pulling me in. This was a very disturbing thing about the ps2. Almost as if Sony was trying to scold you for not taling good care of your disc. Edit: to those who thinks it's a little ridiculous that i have such trauma from a stupid scary screen, i get it lol. But that's just me. Im aware that it's dumb that this is something that terrified me so much, and i can also see someone just not caring or not finding it scary. Nowadays, it doesn't bother me, but my ps2 just had a hard time reading discs half the time due to it being a pre owned system, so because of that, this screen would pop up alot and think it wasn't a game. Just thought i should be a bit more clear on that. I was only a kid after all. Like 5 or 6 years old
I remember getting this screen when I was younger and just being completely zoned out in confusion, but I don’t remember feeling panicked. Now it creeps me out like crazy watching this video and it’s been more than a decade!!!
Aww, how adorable you crying to your mum amd her turning it off for you. I don't get why Sony made it creepy, they shoulda realised kids are easily frightened. If I was a kid, this woulda scared the life out of me that's for sure.

Ain't going to lie, nothing scared me as a child all that much, but this certainly did, used to run out the room, the way it was so unexpected made it worse I think, not to mention the deep red colouring with the horror like sound.. Still gives me goosebumps to this day, can't say if it's the unexpected way it came on, thinking my ps broke or the noise it played, either way I ain't afraid to say it scared the shit out of me.. Why Sony decided to make that screen is beyond me, considering they made the 'Disc Read Error' message so the aspect of that red screen was pointless..
@@tonyb7182 I'm glad everyone in this comment section have some sort of traumatic experience with this screen. Writing both of these comments with this video playing gave me chills.

I used to watch DVDs on my PS2 to fall asleep to. One time I feel asleep watching something, and the disk must've had a scratch that knocked it out of the movie and onto this screen. I woke up hearing this sound in my dream and when I look at the TV I see this red, mean looking screen. First time I ever saw it too. It was unsettling, for sure. I swear, when I was a kid and got this abomination of a screen for the first time, I actually cowered the fuck away from my room and told my dad to turn the thing off for me because I didn't have the guts to do so. I didn't use the PS2 for a week or so after that. Who the heck thought adding this screen was a good idea?!
I had the same thing too. I was so terrified. I were just happy, 7 years young kid, who were playing Crash Bandicoot 1, and then suddenly the red screen came up. I called my father to come to my room and shut down the console. Bad memories from PS2 tbh.
The red and black background are what makes this red screen of death very creepy and scary as the said colors of backgrounds are what adds to the creepy factor.
I was talking to my mom the other day and she reminded me that I was afraid of our PS2, I asked why and she told me I got up screaming and crying one night telling her that I was "falling into the ps2 red clouds" I still have my ps2 from 2011. I haven't played on it since 2015.
Same it's just nostalgic and legendary for me. It's like revisiting my childhood and the best console of all time. Almost like you are entering some kind of void, limbo, another world or something you hear after you die. So magical and mysterious. My mind just goes to a completely different place listening to this. It's indescribable. Like having the best dream and the worst nightmare at the same time the PS2 startup sound, intro and disc error. That's how I feel about it. Your soul essence is just captured and captivated. Seeing this shit late at night alone and in the dark as a small child was one of the most terrifying experiences I have ever had to this day
It's looks like everybody got the same experience buddy lmao
OMG SAMEEE
I always felt uneasy when I use to see this screen, my cousins/friends would be trying to fix it to play the sims or something I’m just sitting there like 👁️
👄👁️
I’m glad I’m not the only one bruh💀
Same. I'd instantly pick my feet up in fear lol😂
Scary especially when your home alone at night

This and the PS3 baby commercial just proves that Sony was a really scary company in the 2000’s.
I swear every kid needed therapy after they first experienced this
I literally had ptsd cuz of it lmao
@XKillO8X i dont anymore lol only when i was 6/7
h h same bro I was pretty traumatised when I saw this for the first time as a kid. I was too afraid To even look at any TV’s literary because of this screen.
@@nardo259 yeah i was too scared to look at any screens too especially at night

*Fun fact:* Those skyscrapers you see appear in the intro, actually represent each one of the save files that you have. So everyone gets a different intro, depending on their save files and so the amount of the skyscrapers.
And the blocks in the red screen are the poor souls who had a heart attack
@@cresbalundo8845 PFFHAHA! That’s great!
Wow i didn't know that (Because the PS2 was like sold out when i discovered Gaming)
What if you don't have memory card?
@@annoyingguyoninternet1631 then it won't start ig lmao
I like how optimistic the description is. We all know that 99.9% of the times you got this screen, you _did_ put in a PS/PS2 format disc.
People remember this red screen, I was not only terrified of this but also the noises the disc makes while running, it's so annoying and traumatizing.. I'm just begging for it to work but it's won't
You didn't know real sadness and disappointment as a kid, until you saw this on the screen😥
*When Startup Is Little Bit Longer*
Me:"Something's Wrong I Can Feel It"
Yeah exactly this
I remember that feeling.
TRUE
yeah xD
Yep
imagine playing your ps2 in complete darkness and this screen comes up
Literally when I was 5.
totally nightmare..
I remembered when this first happened when I was 6. Freaked me out so badly.
Scariest shit I've ever experienced
I was playing my PS 2 (in the dark) when I was little and I was playing a creepy resident evil game, I want to the bathroom, came back just to play and started up the ps2 And that happened, I was super freaked out.
To this day, being alone when this comes up scares the hell outta me or jus makes me super nervous
X2
when youre 12 years old playing late at night by yourself and getting hit with this demonic screen for the first time was terrifying. i had no clue what this was or why it was happening.
Psychologist: "when do you think your anxiety started?"

Still don't know how people find this scary. If anything, the silence before the PS2 logo shows up is scary.

is it just me or is everyone coming back to this nostalgic video?
Its an absolute past trauma
You think you're going to Heaven but suddenly, and without warning, get thrown into the depths of Hell. I'm glad I never saw this screen as a kid, it would've creeped me the hell out.
As a kid, if you didn't hear that 'HISSSS' sound, you instantly knew something was wrong.
true! after that the red screen will appear.
yup now I'm to scared to play my playtation 2
+Kayden Cook its called you need to be brave, if that happened to me, i wouldnt be scared
for me when the ps2 startup was quite long...i instantly off the console, took the cd,wipe the disc with a bit of water...and placed back in the console and BOOM! DIGIMON RUMBLE ARENA 2!!!!!
+TokyoBoi Roblox "Being brave doesn't mean you're not scared. It means you're scared shitless but then you pick up the shotgun anyway."

+KawaiiYanderlee Holy shit, I was the same too. I would actually prepare to run before I put cd inside if it gets an error.
I had the same thing too. I was so terrified. I were just happy, 7 years young kid, who were playing Crash Bandicoot 1, and then suddenly the red screen came up. I called my father to come to my room and shut down the console. Bad memories from PS2 tbh.
when that happened to me, i got my sister to do it, she doesn't have a dick but it was bigger than mine.
A .G.R what the fuck?
KawaiiYanderlee whoever's idea it was, must want to scare people
I remember my friend and I were terrified of this as kids, the sound still gives me chills to this day!!
Fun Fact:You can return to this screen even if the Playstation 2 logo appears as if the disc was readed by the console. That's the scary part.
This always scared the shit out of me.

The red and black background are what makes this red screen of death very creepy and scary as the said colors of backgrounds are what adds to the creepy factor.

PS2 > Every other console.
