- This is one of the most important races of 2023. Public school teacher Brandon Johnson is running for Chicago mayor against Paul Vallas, who has decimated public schools across the U.S. Support from Republican mega-donors has Vallas on the verge of victory.
Paul Vallas decimated public schools in New Orleans, Philadelphia, and Chicago. He skimmed from teachers’ pensions, slashed wages, and dramatically increased expulsions and suspensions. When reached for comment, Vallas’ team told us he "is proud of his record of turning around failing school districts and improving outcomes for students and the community."
Brandon Johnson was a public school teacher in Chicago and later became an organizer with the Chicago Teachers Union where he protested school closings and fought for an elected school board. In 2018, Johnson was elected Cook County Commissioner.
Johnson is proposing a vision for Chicago that would reverse decades of corporate control over the city’s finances and empower working people.

We have power when we stand together. Workers rights are the peoples rights. Workers rights are good for everyone.
These guys are being extremely generous in saying Vallas "doesn't understand" the effects of his actions. It's just such a sweet assumption to say someone like Vallas just needs to learn, and then he'd stop.

It's possible that they had to go mild to bypass YT algorithms. I've read of other content creators who were demonetized or had their work scrapped because the algorithms said to.
Inferring nefarious intentions on behalf of your political opponents is a great way to drive polarization. It also absolves you of having to listen to anything they have to say while satisfying your own sense of righteousness. Maybe Vallas actually just disagrees on the issues.

Men and women like Vallas will aways argue “tough love” and necessary austerity …. for others. In entirely good conscience.
It’s their wildly disproportionate wealth that allows them to do so, insulating them in a zone of invulnerability, a place where 1) policies are largely created precisely to protect, and increase, their wealth in the first place, 2) neither policy, nor much of anything else - like political or social consequences - can penetrate that insulation, and 3) since they worked so very diligently to become the smartest guys and gals in the room, their shared values and view of what’s necessary for good social order - like privatization of the commons - inherently deserve dominance: they tell one another so every day.

When that police union knucklehead made trumpian threats about if Johnson were to be elected, I think it may have backfired. Before watching this documentary, I didn't know how sinister Vallas was, but I knew from that cop's comments that he was on the wrong side. I'm glad for our city how this turned out.
I need for anyone & everyone who reads my comment. If you haven't already, at least once, just ONCE go to your local cities political rallies and be in the moment. Hear what others have to say, hear what these leaders visions are because it will have an effect on you, everyone you know & love in the city & state you reside in. I've gone to both rallies for Democrats & Republicans in my state and I went home with a damn good understanding on which side of the line I firmly & proudly stand on!.... I truly hope the People of Chicago make the right choice!....

This hit piece doesn't surprise me. Coming from people who say that they want a person who represents "the people" however that person (Johnson) is only a face. When you really dig into their backgrounds -- Brandon Johnson is a more progressive version of Lightfoot who had little to no experience (see our current crime, attrition, education and revenue stats.). While I am not a staunch fan of Vallas, the guy HAS DELIVERED and HAS DEMONSTRATED success. Is he a story teller - no. Is he older - yes. Does it tell it like it is - yep. We need an experienced, direct and candidly a person who will give us the good bad and ugly. Johnson is selling roses and daisies but when the bills and attrition comes to roost, the middle class and lower will end up paying for his decisions if he elected Mayor. Just look at what has happened so far with Lightfoot...higher taxes, poor got poorer, our kids are less educated, businesses left, we're in a $36-38B deficit. I mean, cmon' dude. Read the 3rd party articles. Do some research. Don't just be Johnson's tool. VOTE VALLAS.

My mom taught in Chicago not for CPS but my parents were in Chicago when Vallas was board president. My dad said to me “Vallas was a company man, he wasn’t on the teachers side. We didn’t like him from day one” (when he heard he was running). He’ll be a company man again, not on the side of Chicagoans. This election is too important. Make sure your friends, family and neighbors vote! If you can, offer to drive them to the polls if they need a ride. Or phonebank and canvas for Johnson. We may not have more money, but we have more people so let’s help Brandon win!

Great video, I'm very happy to have found this channel. I am also glad I watched this knowing Johnson has won. I would not have been able to watch it before. The horrific destructive greed of Vallas would have been nauseating to watch, even though I greatly appreciate knowing his history and background. In the 90s such villains were stars, wrecking and privatizing everything they could get their grubby greedy hands on. I cannot be happier that a man like this has lost. Viva Chicago!

I’m a lifelong Chicago resident- 64 yrs old.
Chicago has a MOUNTAIN of problems. Paul Vallas is NOT the source of these problems. He hasn’t been CEO in over 20 yrs. There’s been 8 different CEO’s since then. POLITICIANS (Daley, Burke, Madigan, etc) are to blame for Chicago’s ills.
Vallas’s detractors are all aligned with the CTU and are against school choice and vouchers.
These programs give poor families an opportunity to attend a school OTHER than strike plagued CPS.
Minority families have been opting OUT of CPS for years now.
This video isn’t in the least bit objective or fair minded.
It was also just revealed that Johnson owes 1000’s in traffic tickets, fees, fines, water and sewer bills etc.
If he can’t manage his money on $175,000 a yr HOW can he manage the budget of the city?
Johnson will be a disaster.
School choice doesn’t mean you get to pick the school you want if it’s a charter THE SCHOOL can choose who they want. Which also means they can get rid of whoever they want, whenever they want. My mom’s school that she taught at in Chicago was bought by a charter. They promised the teachers and students could stay, but they lied. They only kept one teacher, but they only lasted a year and quit. The teachers only got paid 80% of what CPS did and did not have any planning period, had to supervise the kids at lunch so no lunch either. So they got a bunch of new teachers with no experience. And many of the students did not get to come back. I’m not against all charters, but I am not a pro charter person at all.
Maybe Chicago needs/deserves a big wake up disaster (akin to a fire) that you claim Johnson will be before it can truly become great again.

Brandon Johnson didn’t pay his water bill for 8 months and owes over 3k on his water bill. Not to mention he owes over 6k in unpaid traffic tickets. He makes 175k a year. He has no excuse for not paying that. I’m voting Vallas

What the people criticizing Paul Vallas for running Chicago Public Schools in the 1990's forget is that Chicago had the absolute worst school test scores at that time, and many of the schools in the city were physically dumps thanks to try e rampant crime due to gangs and drugs. He did a lot of improvements though they didn't go to everyone, and he at least began to turn around the schools though his emphasis on charter schools was misguided. In fact, the guy who followed him, Arne Duncan, was even more gung ho on charter schools and sticking it to the teachers, and he eventually ended up becoming Secretary of Education under President Obama. It seems everyone is making him out to be this radical right wing blowhard when he's really a centrist Democrat more likely in the vein of former mayors Richard M. Daley and Rahm Emmanuel. Lori Lightfoot was elected as the great hope for progressive governance in Chicago but she screwed up big time, which is probably why Paul Vallas will get elected the next mayor of Chicago.
