The Chicago public housing was never "paradise." Those blocks were built with the worst materials, and within a few years the doorknobs were coming off, wires were burning out, pipes were leaking, elevators got stuck, garbage chutes were clogged with trash eight stories high, the rats infested, the windows wouldn't close, the burned-out lightbulbs in the stairwells were never replaced.
Worst of all, it crammed the Black vote into a single district.
@Anarchist Zero nah US black history is filled with riots.
@Anarchist Zero I support the riots that took place during the Civil Rights Wra and even today.
"Riots are the voice of the unheard"
@Anarchist Zero 100%
Riots are the sound of the unheard.
@@frankzheng5286 Just like the Draft Riots where Black men were hung from trees in the street and the Black children's home was burned down. Does your "riots are the cries of the unheard" excuse cover Irish drunks?
Red lining is still a MAJOR problem here. My aunts neighborhood is known for not posting homes for sale online and selling only by word of mouth to make sure they sell to specific people only. It's still a major problem that won't be fixed until we fix our mentalities.
That sounds pretty good. White people excluding others sounds pretty cool.
So selling off market properties should be illegal now? Enough with the woke bs
I Really appreciate you telling this because most people may not know how some white neighborhoods continue to practice steering and redlining. Its a matter of truth that our black brethren need to know and that our white brethren need to acknowledge. I highly respect you for your fair heart in saying the truth. God bless.
@@unboxrealestateAmazing that all of these policies of Redlining started in the late 1860’s from the Black Codes
Is it a neighborhood in Chicago? I’m noticing where I live there’s no homes for sale online but I’ve seen 2 or 3 houses that have for sale signs.
I was born and raised in Chicago in 1942, and I am super sad, that at my age, I may have to kill some evil demons, who have tried to sneak up on me and in my apartment. I worked and married, and had an only child at 37. Respect each other and stop the killings

I hate being asked what part of Chicago I’m from. I know what they’re trying to get at. It reveals more about them than it does about me.
I ask what part, because 9 out of 10 times when someone says they're from Chicago, they're from the suburbs.
I grew up on the Southside, and honestly i am just curious what neighborhoods people are from when they actually are from Chicago.
@@danvondrasek It can be loaded in any direction. My experience is closer to yours but there really are loads of people who believe in the "bad" neighborhood myth as if the people who live there are truly evil and not subject to factors outside their control in any way.

i can't stand coming to the city. when you talk about these politics people often get offended. segregation is real in the city
It hurts to the core of my soul. My grandmother stayed in Henry Horner and refused to leave after it got bad. I remember asking why she wanted to stay in such an awful place. She kept talking about how nice it used to be. We lived in Chatham and then moved to the south suburbs. The south suburbs were like Utopia. They are now run down. I think like my grandmother...I remember how nice they used to be.

When you're raised in what I call a "white bubble" (all your family, most of the people you associate with and you are white) there are things you don't understand about people of color and their lived experiences. I happened to grow up in a white bubble and it wasn't until later that I could recognize that racism is still alive and well. My boyfriend (who's black) has graciously told me how he's been followed in stores, been treated differently, and how he wouldn't feel welcome living in certain neighborhoods. Growing up, you're taught that racism is in the past and is no longer relevant, but when your well-funded suburban elementary school is 95% white, you know the effects of institutionalized racism are still felt.
The white people of those neighborhoods finance their schools via property taxes, so what is the problem? You get what you pay for.
@@timwarcloud - And you pay for what you can afford. And what you can afford is based on your income. And your income is largely based on...
The last Republican mayor of Chicago left office in 1944. What do they have to say about people living in a Democrat bubble? What part of Chicago is Barack Obama's multimillion dollar estate located in? Where does Mayor Lori Lightfoot and her wife live? They still have that ridiculous little "People Mover" choo choo in operation?
Race hustling and organized crime are alive and well in Chicago. Too bad for anyone there who isn't hooked up, regardless of color.
YES
You left out the part where people of color commit over 90% of the violent crimes and sexual assaults in Chicago.
Only suburbanites say the east side is the lake.
The Eastside is literally a neighborhood right on the border of Indiana.
But there's not an "east side" like there's a west, south, or north side. Even the Chicago flag only recognizes the west, south, and north sides.
@@saulgood8229but there is a east side look it up in a map.
I've heard this story so. many. times. I wish I head more suggestions for answers. Segregation is just one problem. I grew up on the northside in a very racially and ethnically integrated area and we still had problems with poverty and violence.
in your opinion, what is the answer ?
@@CrowHawk1000 Bringing back segregation for whites. We need to bring the signs back. We white people like segregation.
Yeah, I feel for you. 300 years of multiculturalism as an experiment has failed. There probably isn't an answer that will 100% fix the problem, but perhaps a new type of segregation, where self determination of black only communities with equal funding based on population and tax revenue would allow those populations to get what they deserve. Smartest thing I see on the internet is what's happening in Baton Rouge ATM. Maybe that's the answer?
@@CrowHawk1000It starts from home.

I grew up on the south side 78th & Bishop & 78th Paulina and what upsets me is when a video is made like this & they don’t go deeper into the problem segregation is only a fraction of the problem. It’s easy for someone who doesn’t understand history to make a video like this and feel like I’m bringing awareness to the problem without digging deeper.
There are some really excellent points made in this video that make me realize a lot of the problems with past approaches to solving Chicago's crime and poverty issues. The answer lies in integrating wealthy neighborhoods rather than dumping money into sectioned off, new housing projects that will just concentrate poverty and result in failed missions like Cabrini-Green.
THIS!!!! Integration is absolutely the answer. Research shows that integration creates upward mobility for Black and Brown people by just having friends from different class backgrounds, witnessing people that live different lives and make other options available, etc.
I accept everything presented here except the premise of violence. I grew up poor, nowhere in there was some predisposition to shoot or beat somebody because of it.
I think it's more about the concentration of poverty leading to economic escape routes, such as gangs and drug trafficking. Poverty affected neighborhoods are more likely to develop gangs, as well, due to racially-intertwined police aversion -- aka having a form of protection that won't get you killed or arrested because of your race. Those same protections and escape routes put in place though become the very problem they worked to solve.
“I know this because I’m from Chicago” She probably grew up in the well to do suburbs. No talk of the broken families or how the city leadership mostly Democrat allowed this problem to fester for decades.

As a black person who is raised a non-profit housing and went on to be homeless I can tell you firsthand that the solution isn't the government the government didn't put me where I'm at today solidly in the middle class I did that. the black community needs to stop looking to the government that created policies that hurt them in the first place for Solutions the solution to poverty is good education if public schools are providing it then homeschool is the option. secondly you can't legislate away teenage pregnancies and proper family planning there's no amount of legislation that's going to stop people from making irresponsible decisions and having more babies than what they can afford before their financially solid
My family got wrapped into the property scams in the 1990s. They sold us a house in the "dying suburbs" of Dolton, Harvey, and Calumet City at an inflated price. We were so eager to leave the city that my family didn't even realize the Mills and factories had closed in these neighborhoods, taking the good jobs that made these suburbs thrive with them. When the jobs closed, the White people ran. I slowly saw the community change from White, mixed, then all Black. With few job options, other than the Metra for commuting, Black people just brought the crime to the Suburbs. Some people argue that Dolton is worse than living in Chicago.

What type of Black neighborhood? A poor one or middle class one?
alex droogy Tulsa Oklahoma. Black Wall Street and whitey burned it down. Rosewood Florida. Guess who burned it down?
You can’t blame segregation for the cities violence in black communities. Englewood was once the second largest commercial district in the city and an example of economic growth in the black community. It was majority black and majority middle class. This neighborhood fell apart so fast it was impossible to get out for many families and today it is the most violent neighborhood in the city. The jobs left and the family unit was gonna so all that was left was violence and drugs. There was no hope only fear. It’s the culture and economics that killed this neighborhood not the segregation.
it fell apart when the jobs left. Violence accompanies poverty
teebone 21 yes agreed but people are saying that since this neighborhood is majority black it failed. To say that takes either saying the entire system was pitted against this neighborhood or there is something inherently wrong with majority black communities.
If we are to honest it is the result of white hostility. The federal and state government, organizations like HOLC, MPHC, and University of Chicago, Redevelopment Act, Illinois Urban Community Conservation act, Federal Housing Act, banks and other mortgage lenders collectively working together in order to satiate white peoples desire to escape “inharmonious racial groups” yet more importantly stuffing the ruling class’s predatory pockets.
@jackcoolidge8123 why you deny that white America has been at war with Black people for hundreds year's a people you white Europeans have enslaved and crted racist systems like Red Lining and Jim crow you whites never faced this evil systems that you created for Black people to deal with.
Black people we need to live in homes where every other house are acres apart. When we live stacked on top of each other like sardines crime and immortality takes over. If we had gotten our 40 acres most blacks would of been self sufficient farmers who lived off the land instead of living off the crumbs of Wall Street capitalism.

Public housing is a perfect example of big government meaning well but actually harming the community. Ditto for paying women more welfare the more children they have and penalizing women who are married with less welfare.
The problem with videos like this is that they act as if the US is solely a Black/White country and do not measure the integration that is taking place in the suburbs especially between whites, Hispanics, and Asians; nor do they mention the slow and steady movement of the Hispanic population (in Chicago, mostly Mexican) into historically Black communities.

Who is narrating the video?
As the snow flies..
My mother lived near Chicago. In the 1930's, her father took her to the train station. She saw a lot of black people getting off the train, dressed shabbily. The governor of Mississippi was giving any black person who wanted it, a free one-way ride to Chicago. These people were maybe 2 generations out of slavery, with elderly relatives that remembered slavery. And they went to South Chicago. Housing projects were segregated by race, then. Chicago was unsafe in the 1930's; my mother showed us the "Chicago grip", taking the purse strap over the shoulder, holding the purse tightly under the arm. One always dressed up to go to the city; white gloves were common, then. Her father worked for Chemical Bank, for many years. We went to the Field museum in 1975, it was great.
Freedom of association will always lead to geographically separate racial areas.

Hello.....
You missed the point of the video. The African-American community is stuck in low-income housing with low-income schools, while the White community generally prospers in the high-income areas. You see the inequality here, right? We need to work to end the effects of redlining. This is about giving whites and blacks the same opportunity to succeed, not forcing integration. Once we reach equality, integration will naturally occur.
