- This week, more drama at OpenAI: The company wanted Scarlett Johansson to be a voice of GPT-4o, she said no … but something got lost in translation. Then we talk with Noland Arbaugh, the first person to get Elon Musk’s Neuralink device implanted in his brain, about how his brain-computer interface has changed his life. And finally, the Times’s Karen Weise reports back from Microsoft’s developer conference, where the big buzz was that the company’s new line of A.I. PCs will record every single thing you do on the device.
* After our interview, we reached out to Neuralink to confirm what Noland shared with us about his surgery. But we didn’t hear back from them. You can read more about his experience on their website.

Noland is such a beautiful human being with a big heart! What courage and positive attitude!
Noland is a very cool guy. Great sense of humor and personality
Great to hear from Noland
The editing in this episode is next-level 👏🏻
Thanks Casey and Kevin for bringing Noland on the show, he is inspiring
Hearing Noland's experience was fantastic.
Float tanks are basically sensory deprivation tanks, and sensory deprivation tanks aren't new, you silly kids! They're so 1980! EDIT: Noland Arbaugh seems like a great guy. I genuinely hope Musk doesn't loose interest in the brain implant thing. Abandoned implants are a real thing, and it's usually very unhappy for the folks who are abandoned with their hardware.
Very much enjoyed the Podcast,But Nolan was nice to hear from you awesome personality. I wish you nothing but the best .💯✌️
Love to see the entire episode on YT. Thanks!
You guys nailed the OpenAI story.
Seems to me like some necessary communication between Open Ai and Scarlett Johansson got Lost in Translation... ;)
Excellent analysis and summary of what’s up with the malevolence that is pervasive in tech. Thanks dudes!
0:01-1:25 If I can survive to that vintage synth music I can hearl full episode.GO, GO, GO!!!!
First time watching the podcast and it’s a wild experience! Absolutely my favorite podcast. Thank you! ❤❤❤
You did not consider certain issues in your discussion of the Copilot+PCs:
- The amount of storage in a PC is limited, that means that only a limited number of screenshots can be kept at any time, perhaps a few days' worth. This limits the usefulness of recall in some use cases.
- The PCs use SSDs. Recall continuous rewriting will accelerate the media degradation over time.
- This PCs are based on ARM CPUs. While this reduces power consumption and extends battery live, it also means that all the software you already have will not run on them; or, if they use an emulator, it will run a lot slower. If you have custom applications, they will have to be recompiled for the new architecture by their provider, either internal or external.
An inner space race. I don't exactly know why I find this episode so moving but I do
I can’t believe this overshadowed the fact they showed a computer with vision, that was an impossible benchmark that was said to be what prevented us from agi just 6 years ago in most CS textbooks
Yay. New episode!
💚
The fact that people will automatically try to match Scarjo voice to Sky’s every time they use it, is a lost for OpenAI
Another banger episode.
“Only Black Widows may apply” may be interpreted many ways.😂
We had someone in Australian who sued over use of a stage name as a trading name by an unrelated business: she lost. While SJ has a right to be somewhat annoyed and even sue I think she'd lose IFF it is the other actors' genuine voice. Unfortunately however, the direct reference to "Her" along with the previous approaches to her (pun intended) by the dumbass CEO might justifiably tilt the balance in this case: it'll be up to the jury IFF in a jury trial. And I would sue if I were her if only because of these two facts, as, on the balance, prima facie, they appear to have cloned her voice using another actor. I suspect they'll settle out of court excepting that she may insist on not using that voice which will be an issue for OpenAI but not for her..
Regarding the continuous screenshots that Windows AI will be taking, doesn't that take up a ton of drive space over time?
I wonder if Noland could use Vision Pro, or maybe there could be accessibility options where he could use it with eye tracking alone? Everyone I’ve heard has said their eye tracking is better than everything else..
Great coverage, though I've been talking with Sky for a few months now. It was so clearly a SJ mimic so was wondering why the story wasn't mainstream until now
We got a Scarlet fan here!
As a film a voice actor, all I want to hear is the real 'Sky's' voice, and if it's legit her voice, there is absolutely nothing anyone can do. I don't care if it sounds like Scarlet, you can't sue another VA for being too similar to your voice. Nor can you stop commercial use of it. I believe if we can get a voice down to a fingerprint (which I think we basically have been able to for a while), then you can't use someone's legit voice print. But if you're natural speaking voice is similar to a celebrity, there isn't anything anyone can do.
Scarlet said her closest friends and family could not tell the difference between her and Sky? That's absolutely a bold-faced lie. It's similar, but it's absolutely clear to me that it's a different person, and this different person isn't doing an impersonation, they are just talking. If I can tell in five seconds, why can't her inner-circle? Sure Scarlet.
Imagine you're Sky, and it's your biggest gig ever, massive success. Once in a lifetime. Welp...nope. Here is a mega rich celebrity taking that all away from you. Sorry actor behind Sky that no one knows your name. I really feel for you. I hope OpenAI compensated you if they plan to fully pull your voice print.
Finally, there is nothing wrong in relating your product to a fictional product in a popular movie. We humans are constantly creating based on previous inspirations. It's hype. It's cool. It's in. It's marketing. Again, it's not an impersonation, and it's not an amalgamation of digital voice prints made to resemble Samantha/Scarlet. It's crazy, you heard the original VA audition, and you still were skeptical because you couldn't see the actor clearly in the booth? Don't drink the Kool-Aid! It's not a conspiracy.
Well said!
Interesting post. What’s your opinion on if AI, LLM, et al are protected under the first amendment? If it is, does that imply it’s a citizen? If not, what suggestions would you have to discern a human between a LLM/GPT/AI?
So Sam Altman reaches out to ScarJo for her voice, she denies it, Someone else voices Sky, sounds pretty similar (subjective) to ScarJo from 'her'. He then reches out to her again a few days prior to launch telling her to rethink her decision. He tweets 'her' after the 4o keynote. After her talking about this they immedately take it down out of 'respect' for her (sure buddy). And it's all just a big coincidence ?
And ScarJo isn't even suing the VA, what are you talking about ?
Are you purposefully being dense or do people not have the capacity to gather information using the contex provided ?
So you didn't hear her real voice and you could tell after hearing it for five minutes that's not the other ones?
How does this square up in your head dude? 😅
@@the_crypter he obviously wanted it to sound like “her”. Best case scenario is he gets ScarJo (obviously).
If he hires a different voice actor who sounds close enough, why is that such a bad thing?
Makes you think how apple's new accessibility features will really help a lot of people, they just announced eye tracking.
The podcasts don't play for me on spotify and google podcasts for some reason
Float tank has been incredible for back spasms but havent had those ego death or spiritual experience or nothing like that though
The question that remains is: did you use ChatGPT to help you insert all the titles of Scarlett Johansson's movies into this text? Hahahahaha. Prompt: "Here's a list of titles of movies. Insert them into this text in a way that makes sense". 🤣🤣
Never occurred to me it sounded like her until I listened to this episode.
- I wouldn't trust an operating system that inserts ads into the UI to also keep the Recall content on-device.
- Telling (but not surprising) that the Times reporter who focuses on Microsoft has a MacBook as her personal PC. Wow Windows sucks.
- The Sky voice doesn't at all sound like ScarJo to me.
There are many people who sound similar. Many comedians who can mimic other celebrity.
The best example of overthinking ever
Salt tanks are as new tech as tiger handheld games are
Lol naming her movies was a great bit hilarious boys 🔥🔥🔥
Great episode, as usual. Casey, just chill, man! Seriously. Do not feel obligated to make a mediocre joke every time Kevin takes one second to breathe! Your knowledge and wisdom are inspiring as it is.
Imagine a scenario where the AI actually uses a different voice, but the “new voice” behaves exactly like the voice in the movie Her. It would still be theft. Don't steal a vote. But stealing the “performance”. The creation of Spike Jonze and Scarlet. Even if AI has changed the voice. Content theft is becoming more of a “blur” with AI.
Let's get a female celebrity voice that is not Scarlet Johansen. I suggest Léa Seydoux, or Anne Hathaway. If they don't want to do it, go with Jane Seymour, but not her voice at 73, instead sample her 29 year old voice in the movie "Somewhere in Time". Jane is reaching the end of her career, so she doesn't need to worry about being "overexposed". Scarlet, Anne, and Léa all have young children, so they are concerned about their security. Jane's children are all adults. Offer Jane the millions, and the opportunity to be immortal, as the voice of AI, she will take it.
I would love to have both your voices in my ai
Beavis and Butthead here need to understand how many people use Windows PCs for personal use. Snobby bastards. I bought a new laptop recently and it has copilot as part of the work interface. I've been surprised how useful I've found it to be. I'm actually thinking about trying the pro version for a month.
Has "use cases" become the new buzz words?
What happened to just "uses"?
I see a key difference between use cases and uses.
12:00 wait, are you saying you're trusting a video sent to you by the company that's created a software that generates ultra realistic videos? 🤔
Does your brain cut out whenever you stand by a microwave like my AirPods do?
Wow I've somehow listened to this podcast for years without realizing there was a video version. I think I like the podcast more now that I have put faces to the unrelentingly enthusiastic voices.
i got whiplash listening to this and the 404 Media podcast back to back
Are you allowed to hire impersonators/impressionists?
They discuss this when mentioning a previous court case in which Tom Waits won a case against Frito-Lay
@@arcrane11 And spoiler: no
Dixie Chicken - hmmm advertising or tanting us.
hard to watch "waste your life like the rest of us" as if gaming isn't a core part of being human.
Sky voice is not the Scarlet's voice , money is the only reason why Scarlet is trying to sue and, in fairness, Scarlet doesn't need more money, ...
Consequences of actions. Don't be a techbro fool like Sam Altman and you wouldn't have to worry about being sued.
OpenAI guys built an amazing thing and all media is talking about is whether the Sky voice mimics Scarlet's voice.
Sounds to me like “all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others “. SJ has no more rights than a mom trying to make a buck as a voice actor.
OpenAI wanted to have a voice like in the movie Hers, not imitate SJ. The AI and SJ voices can, today, be compared and check if those are the same. OpenAI did nothing wrong, and its latest decision was to avoid more bad vibes from SJ. And SJ just lose the opportunity of her life bc of her drama.
You guys. Judge and jury. So now any voice actors that sounds similar to someone famous is out of work. Sux to be you but you kinda sound like SJ. There a real person who now has no work. You just fixated on OpenAI. Shame on you.
Just suck Altman off at this point dude jesus
