    Just think of all of the kids who received Basic Math for Christmas in the late 70s instead of something more fun. I remember looking at the Christmas packages under the Christmas tree and thinking yes that's about the size of an Atari 2600 box. Thankfully I never got Basic Math.

      That's awesome. It's one thing to have a retro console but to have the original one you owned as a kid is even better! My 2600 is pretty sentimental to me too. It was passed down to me from my uncle. I remember telling him I was really into retro games so he gave it to me. He told me he couldn't figure out E.T. as a kid. Lol! Unfortunately, he passed away a few years back. So I keep the 2600 for more than just collecting.

      The thing I hated about the Atari 2600 was connecting the cable to the tv. The cable was like a U shape thingy.

    Race 500 was originally called Indy 500 when it came out. It was sold in a set with 2 steering controllers that as far as I know only were ever used on that game. Great video.

      Yep, you’re correct!
      Games were so expensive we used to swap them with mates.. we borrowed Indy 500 as it was known and loved it & it did have what looked just like paddles but they were specially made to work with the game. The box itself was deeper to allow the game box to go in and the controllers in the bigger box..

    Because I grew up playing basic math (for every half hour I played it I got to play 15 minutes of a regular game) the fact it's a bonus game on this would make me buy it. The things we take from our childhoods... lol

    Thx so much for this video. I just bought this on Steam and bought it solely for Adventure. You can now select game mode 3 for randomly generated items on your game. That alone makes it worth the price for me. I was obsessed with Adventure as a 10 yr. old in the early 80's. I've barely scratched the surface of what Atari 50 has to offer. Many thanks.

    • @siren_section
      @siren_section 2 роки тому +3

      @@onlysublime yeah, outside of Tempest 2000, the Jaguar inclusions basically scream out "wow this system sucked!" They're like terrible tech demos of badly designed hardware. The collection is still amazing though, and they did what they could with the licensing... though I can't help but feel like they could have dropped some extra cash to license some of the really classic games that are missing
      It would be really cool if they put it out as DLC.
      Like Pitfall. or ET, just for the historical factor. Or the awful 2600 port of Pac Man. Now that the reviews for this collection have been so positive, I think it's reasonable that these 3rd party companies would want in.

    • @onlysublime
      @onlysublime 2 роки тому +2

      @@siren_section games that involve multiple parties would be especially hard to get licensing approval like star wars games or ET. Games that used copyrighted music (though less of an issue back in the 2600 days) also a problem. If the company went out of business, you have to find the people who owned the company. It doesn't become free and clear when a company dies.

    • @KaptainKlassic
      @KaptainKlassic  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah that was kind of my intention too. I wanted to see what the 5 games were. I knew a few prior to filming but yeah, overall it was worth it but more for just the sake of making the video, not the actual games. I noticed Atari Mania was actually released on the VCS though correct?

    • @bumpnscore
      @bumpnscore 2 роки тому +1

      Yes Atari Mania is on there for sure, as are a lot of other fun games, most of which are available for other systems. I have all the “Recharged” series of games on my VCS as they are fun to play with the classic controller that comes with the all-in VCS bundle, but also wanted to make my system be as Atari-exclusive as possible. There are a ton of reviews out there for the VCS, most are pretty unkind, mainly due to the hefty price but content as well. It’s a fun retro gaming device with PC capability, and comes with the Atari Vault which has 100 of the classic games which come with the Flashback Classics for Switch (complete with same music). Here again the classic controller is fun to use, but overall I think you got to love Atari to fully enjoy it.

    • @KaptainKlassic
      @KaptainKlassic  2 роки тому

      @@bumpnscore yeah I totally get it. I feel like I'd do the same thing and buy exclusive titles only. One thing I didn't understand about it was connecting it to your PC ad stuff. Just seemed like a confusing system as far as what it's going for.

    • @bumpnscore
      @bumpnscore 2 роки тому +1

      It doesn’t hook up to a PC, rather there’s a “PC mode” built in, so you can connect a bootable USB drive (3.1) with OS of your choosing, which would make the VCS become a PC, presumably for emulators, or game developing, etc. This device is seemingly Atari’s way of catering to the gaming and computing crowds in one place, as their history has always been dabbling in both. I really have no use for this to be a PC so I just enjoy the retro gaming, Antstream arcade, downloadable games as well as it plays Netflix and other streaming services. I figure at the very least, this system gets Atari on par with other game consoles by being their first to be Wi-Fi capable 😂. It does do a good job though and is fun to play. If you can get one for $199 that’s more reasonable.

    • @KaptainKlassic
      @KaptainKlassic  2 роки тому +1

    Cool video, just been watching for tips to unlock the games, I've got one for you too though. With the Tempest section on Vctr- Sctr, once the ememies have reached the top of the 'well' where your gun is, you can only safely pass by them or shoot them whilst they're 'flipping' between segments, so your best option is to just stay in one place and keep firing so they are killed as they try to flip onto the segment you're on. 'Cat Warlords' at the end looked awesome, but probably really tricky to play 😂😂😂😂

    TANGENT TIME: AirWorld! The lost SwordQuest game, never released. With FireWorld and EarthWorld, the prizes of the golden Talisman (which Steven Bell won, but later had sold and melted down except the white gold sword) and the golden chalice (which Michael Rideout won and still owns) were claimed. The WaterWorld prize (the golden crown) was not awarded because the contest was canceled. AirWorld had, according to the contestants, the most beautiful prize...the Philosopher's Stone. The prizes were on display at the EarthWorld and FireWorld contests, and with the Philosopher's Stone, the lid of the golden box housing the stone was removed so that the beautiful chunk of pure white jade was visible. It's mysterious, because there are no pictures. The photos of the prizes in the promotional pamphlets were all artists renditions, and all the renditions always showed the Philosopher's Stone with the golden lid covering the stone. A picture of the lost Sword (The Grand Prize) can be viewed online, was taken at the contest display, but it's a pretty lousy picture with a ton glare. There is no picture of the Philosopher's Stone, and it is believed that the three lost prizes...the Sword, the Crown, and the Philosopher's Stone...have all been sold and melted down, just like Steven Bell's Talisman. This leaves Michael Rideout's Chalice as the only surviving SwordQuest prize. To this day, I hope one day a quality picture of the Philosopher's Stone (lid removed) surfaces. I apologize, but this is a topic I've been fascinated with for years.

      Wow, I love the amount of detail and thought put into your comment. With that being said, look no further for I have the Philosopher's Stone. Lol, I wish. Speaking of which, I hope they do another one again someday.

      @underwaterlevelz1947 2 роки тому +1

      @@KaptainKlassic Perhaps a future video topic: games that should be the challenge for the next NWC. It just seems downright criminal that a prize as glamorous, ambitious, and valuable as the bejeweled Philosopher's Stone (which undoubtedly was expensive to conceptualize, commission, and create) has no surviving photographs that have found their way online. FireWorld's champion and Chalice winner Michael Rideout said that when he saw the Philosopher's Stone with the lid removed on display at the contest "it took my breath away". Even whomever likely stripped the prize of it's jewels and melted it down had to have paused, taken some photos, maybe even considered keeping it intact. Destroying something so beautiful is a sin.

Best feeling in the world when your buddy is late to defend an attack and the ball ends up rebounding multiple times against the back of his shield and back into his own castle, at a high rate of speed, sometimes killing his own warlord. I'm a simple man. When a guy wearing an Atari hat starts talking in front of a wall that reads "Pac-Man" and "Tetris", I listen.
    I'm the same age as the Atari 2600 and I had it when it was popular, and it's very intriguing to hear the opinions of people who were born after that era. You're good at these games too!
    You say you wish Kaboom were in the collection. Well, Kaboom is a clone of an early Atari arcade game called Avalanche, and that game is included in the previous Atari Flashback Collection on the Nintendo Switch. (Most if not all good Activision games in that era were shameless clones of earlier games, so that company is extremely overrated.) That leads me to why I'm disappointed with both collections. Forget about Activision - these compilations lack many essential Atari-made games!
    Atari 50 includes the awesome Food Fight and Dark Chambers, but omits certain games which were on the Atari Flashback Collection, namely the phenomenally popular arcade game Atari Football (the first good sports video game), the aforementioned historically essential Avalanche, and the Atari 5200 game Realsports Baseball, which is the first good baseball video game and was also included on Atari Flashback Collection. And both collections are missing excellent Atari-made arcade games such as Gauntlet and Gauntlet II, Paperboy, Marble Madness, Road Blasters, Vindicators and Xybots.
    Why are these big companies making us buy two or even three compilations (see the super-shameless Namco) in order to get just a fraction of their great old games? When I bought a CD collection of the Beatles greatest hits, it contained all their best songs. So why are Namco, Atari, and SNK so incredibly cheap? SNK put out two Neo Geo Pocket collections and they cumulatively only contain about ten of the best games for that console, which only had maybe twenty good games on it to begin with. SNK could have made one collection with all the good Neo Geo Pocket games, and it would have been a must-buy and a huge commercial success. Instead, they had to be stingy and I doubt the two mediocre collections are selling well.

    • @KaptainKlassic
      @KaptainKlassic  2 роки тому +1

      First, thank you for watching and the detailed comment! I agree, it is a shame that a lot of these collections don't have a lot of variety. Atari 50 had the perfect oppurtunity to add games here that were not on the previous Atari Flashback Collection. Also, I admit I did not realize Kaboom was a clone of Avalanche! Though after playing the Atari Flashback Collection I can see it. My next video is actually sort of a continuation of this one and I talk about Atari Flashback Classics. I think you'll enjoy it.

      Unfortunately, Atari owns none of those. They're Activision, Namco, and Konami/Parker Bros properties, respectively. Tutankham is probably the least likely to turn up on a compilation because it's a double-license, i.e. developed by Parker Bros based on a Konami arcade game.
      Still got my 2600 Tutankham cartridge :) That game gets a lot of flak, and it's not much like the arcade game it's supposed to be representing, but I enjoyed it a lot back in the day and have probably played it more than the arcade original over the years.
