The Atari Age was way before my time. However, my dad's first console was a 2600 (back when it was just the VCS.) And he kept saying that despite how simplistic the games were compared to today, it was something he borderlined addicted to. And after playing through Atari 50, I can see why. Good and fun game design stands the test of time. I'm so happy I got the steelbook version for my Switch. The gold cover really makes it feel special and the included poster is a neat touch. And you're right about this feeling more than just a collection of ROM's. With all the interviews and the scanned in stuff like the ads, magazine articles apart from just the manuals and box-art, it really does feel like a virtual museum. Also, been here since about 3k subs. It's been cool seeing your channel grow!
Another great video. Your videos are like a outlined book report. I don't mean that in a bad way. But they have a definite intro, middle and summation. That's why they work. People who do well on this platform don't just have content. They have a style to the way they present. Your style is exactly what is should be.
I had forgotten about this until the recent revival of Classic Game Room. Picked up a copy and you are right; it's like having a museum in your living room. I was honestly surprised at how much I was enjoying the old 2600 games.
Classic Game Room was revived? Didn't realize that. I remember Mark kinda gave up and started making 1 minute videos about pens. Glad he's getting back into it.
Good job with this video! Seeing you cover the Atari 50 collection makes me smile, cuz with how much time ya put into these Atari vids, I expect no less for a video that covers the greatest compilation ever made for the company. Digital Eclipse deserves all the love in the world for how dedicated they are to the world of compilations. They aren't on the insane levels of M2's real hardware shenanigans, but really, they are on their own league, considering they take the mile to reprogram oddball controlling games to work with modern pads
My favorite collection is Activision Anthology for the PS2. You are put in a room with a tv, console and a radio. The soundtrack is full of early 80's hits. It also has a day night cycle that has passing car sounds during the day and crickets at night.
Congrats on 5K! I've been enjoying the Atari 50th Collection. One of the things that really surprised me was the HUGE download update that is required on the physical version. Makes me wonder how much of the collection is actually on the cartridge.
I was excited to see what little games for the 5200 we got. I had one and got to play Star Raiders for the first time in possibly 30 years! Unfortunately, there are a few more lesser-known arcade games that I would’ve liked to seen such as Peter Pack Rat which is a lot of fun! it was a fun little puzzle game, and I swear the theme song will get stuck in your head. You’re probably bombed because from what I understand there was no volume control and the demo kept playing the theme song over and over. As a result, arcade owners ended up unplugging it because they couldn’t take it anymore and players always assume that it was broken down and ended up not spending any money on it.
One of the greatest thing to come out of this collection is the BigPEmu emulator for Jaguar. All of a sudden we have a fully compatible, full featured emulator for the notoriously underappreciated console. Plus there's JagCD support as well, so future collections and/or updates can add literally any commercially released title. Digital Eclipse is right up there with M2 in their appreciation of older systems and emulating them properly on modern hardware. This game was a day-one buy for me.
Agreed. It was funny now they had so many Arcade and 2600 titles, but very few of the others. I know part of it is because the newer consoles didn't have as long of a lifespan, and therefore there weren't as many games. On top of that, many of the games were licensed ones like Pac-Man, etc.
Neat fact. I discovered lots of Atari games can only be found in Midway collections as they own the rights. Such as Paperboy, Roadblasters, Super Sprint, Badlands, Gauntlet, Klax, Marble Madness, and many many more. I picked up the old Midway Treasures for a small handful.
Hey, POJR! Nice review, man... The Atari 2600 was really famous here in Brazil, but the others... not so much, though. We'd sometimes see something regarding the Lynx and Jaguar on magazines at the time, but the others have practically never been mentioned here, back then. Oh, speaking of Jaguar, it's funny how u say "Jaguire" (as in Tobey Maguire) instead of Jaguar! Anyways, nice video, as always. YT suggested your channel to me last week and I subscribed immediately. Really nice stuff, man. Keep up the good work! Cheers!
I was holding off on buying this game because of the lack of my favorite Atari games, which are all by Activision. But, because of your video I will be buying it. Your videos are amazing!
I think Indy 500 may be the first video game I ever played. I was 4-5 and my mother had a close friend whose son was 9-10 at the time. He had an Atari and my mind was blown.
Great video!! I actually got this for the Atari vcs (the newer one) and they emulate the paddles perfectly on the VCS joystick as it is also a paddle..
Nice! Are you referring to the Atari flashback consoles? I want to check these out. I have flashback 2 and it's one of my favorite plug and play consoles.
I was pretty excited when I found out this game came out online so I bought Atari 50 & along with playing new & old games on Atari for the PlayStation 2. I enjoyed all the interviews, commercials, game boxes. Unfortunately I have not unlocked any of the Games & based on what u said I’m not interested in any of them. I Highly Recommend Atari 50😊!!!!! Enjoyed your video Sir!
If you're still taking suggestions, I think you could make a pretty serviceable video about the arcadia/starpath supercharger, the atari 2600 expansion cartridge that upped the RAM and let you load games from cassette. I have one and it's really great, and there's some great games available for the system!
I could tell "Airworld" wasn't a real 2600 game, as the horizontal scrolling was wrong. It was moving every half playfield pixel, or 80 steps per frame, where it's not possible. (20 per half, 40 total in actuality.)
Yeah me too. Some of the sound effects seemed a little too advanced for the console. I didn't notice the horizontal scrolling was inaccurate too though. Nice find.
Thank you for the video. Why did you not mention the previous collection "Atari Vault"? It has been delisted, but I own it, and it is a middle ground between the old collections and this.
The Atari Flashback series on the PS4 included games from 5200 and 7800 as well (and viewable manuals). I own all 3 as well as the 50th Anniversary (and every other iteration on the PS1, PS2 and PS3 consoles). The 50th Anniversary is definitely the best overall.
Great review of the Atari 50 collection. Would be awesome if you could review Commodore 64 hardware / games / history. I think it would engage a whole new audience and help your amazing channel grow! Keep up the great work.
I wish there was a new namco museum game from digital eclipse like how they did with this Atari collection title. Also can’t wait for your discord server.
Just came across your channel yesterday. Great content. Love anything that preserves retro gaming and the fun of the classics. I have an idea for a vid for you. The timing on original nes and the new mini and emulators are all different. So for an example I can smash Mike Tyson's punch out on the original nes, but can't beat Mike on emulator or the new mini. And it's not just me. The current world record speed runner on Mike Tyson's punch out can't beat it on the new mini or emulator either. There's a lag that's created in the new platforms that makes Mike unbeatable without cheats.
Yeah, the 7800 hardware was comparable to the NES having it's own strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately, it was really good at single screen arcade games and lousy at side scrollers in a time when arcade games were seen as old fashion and dated. It could have been much more competitive if it received more time and attention.
I have the Switch version, but I wouldn't be surprised if the PC version gets a mod that allows additional ROMS to be added to the game. Digital Eclipse are wizards when it comes to emulation, the 7800, Lynx, and Jaguar haven't been emulated AFAIK in a commercial product before this released. About Solaris - the guy that programmed that game must have been a genius and / or used some form of witchcraft to get it running on the 2600 the way that it does. The NES would choke and probably have a meltdown trying to run Solaris so smoothly if a port was attempted.
Pretty good collection! Although I wish they could have brought more from the 800 line. I know there's no keyboard but they got around that with Miner 2049 so why not some others like Archon and M.U.L.E.?
I had one of the older collections on PC, and my favorite feature were the interviews with Nolan Bushnell. Does this collection have them? I'd definitely consider putting it on my watchlist, since I have no idea where my copy of that game got to.
Given so much attention put on their consoles-and the huge lack of Atari 5200 games in that section-they shoulda collected them in an “Atari 800XL” section, as opposed to the 800. The 800XL had so many more Atari IP games (including all the 800 games that were presented as 5200 games on the collection) that were far better on the 1979-1992 computers (and some stuff that woulda been somewhat easy to get the rights), and the 800XL is pro’lly the most recognizable of the 8-bit computer line - and it has “800” in it, to bring in folks who didn’t move on to the XL (or XE) lines). Plus, like the C64, the 800XL was as much known for its games as it was for being a home computer - not to mention the 8-bit computer line was SO much more popular than the 5200, as was _The Powers of Matthew Star_ TV show... Also, given that most, if not all, recent systems can connect to Bluetooth keyboards, extending the range of games they coulda ported... “XEGS” woulda been a decent second-place choice, for the category-in strictly keeping with the “console and arcade theme”-but either way, the library is far more expansive for their 8-bit computer line, including many more Atari IP games that were so much better than their 2600 counterparts-and EXACTLY like 5200 games, since they _were_ the OG 5200 games (tweaked a bit, to fit the 5200 interface). That’s why the 5200 joysticks blow so hard, ‘cause they stuffed all the major 8-bit computer buttons on it-the first to really do so, beyond just the “telephone” number, #, and * buttons interfaces that awkwardly functioned like menu buttons, on the Intellivision and Coleco controllers-although that doesn’t excuse such an overall horrible 5200 joystick design execution... especially given that those other controllers (especially Intellivision) weren’t the best examples from which to draw, in the first place) to make them more accessible, for console play...
According to TCRF, the Switch version includes the Lynx game Warbirds, but you can only play it if you don't update the software from the cartridge version.
Great coverage. Atari 50 appealed to me because of the Jaguar and Lynx games. Even Akka Arrh/Maze Invaders both are fun. Videos/ads were good though as always. Even playing Adventure (sure on other compilations but I didn't in the Volume 1 I have then others I never have I am still new to compilations of these sort I have a few but not many and this is my 2nd Atari one). We don't see later Dreamcast collections (that Xbox one was cool), Saturn, 3DO, FM Towns, CDi, or other less successful consoles so Jaguar is cool at least. Or we see games like EvoLand or Life of Pixel (old PCs, NES and such graphics styles) showcasing games eras. Year's Revenge enchanted I expected better controls and more clarity but nope. Not against the original controls but I suck at it and think it's cool. Airworld was a surprise too. Not good at the SwordQuest but they pretty good games. Still Stacks was a 2600 game wasn't it? It's just an image in the compilation though. 5200 being eh versions over 2600/ besides the few in there of different. It's a fair library I know of but still. 7800 was a bit more exciting. The Touch Me was a cool thing to showcase even if not something I'd do much with. The unlocks were interesting I only have Indy 500 so far of course with 100% of looking over everything not the others yet from other means. I was hoping unlocks weren't a thing but with so few and games I don't think much of anyway it's fine. Basic Math maybe (irs not that exciting at all so whoever decided on it I mean what a legend XD) just to see it (even if footage online) the rest are fine and throughout the other systems anyway. The documentaries/video segments are good, the games from 2600 and arcade were fine but yes on other compilations. The odd stuff I didn't know about like the Modem and other details, the PC space even. The 5200/780//PC ones were interesting enough. Comparison of other collections eh its hard to tell. I mean Sega CD on the Genesis 2 is something but its a mini console. Even then Sonic Origins is a mess so eh there. PC Engine and C64 also are cool but again mini consoles/PCs. Compilation wide they are getting better but not much to say as most are major games on 2600/Genesis/NES/SNES and so on on whatever systems they aren't as exciting I find at least. I may not own them but if I already know I don't care about the biggest on the systems I'm not interested. Other people can but I didn't grow up with ghem so I'm more picky in what I care for and experience for the first time and enjoy from game to game of certain 2600, N64 or other particular systems on compilations, Irl id can but mostly emulation or footage and if I cafe enough or not. Bur willing to try out or research what I can as I do have interest in the old systems. But otherwise Rare Replay was good for not only Rare games of old but the ZX Spectrum, N64, Nes, SNES and OG Xbox/360 versions being handled in such a way besides fhe presentation. Atari 50 is better than past compilations and some others but others have a lot more emulation work done to them of course. Variety/value differs on people's taste in the games. So I wouldn't say irs worse or better than the others and besides all fhe content is 90% unlocked instead of videos behind locks and going great have to deal with ghis thing might as well find it online somewhere or give up. Jaguar emulation can be rough ans the library is exciting though. Seeing Lynx games IRL in box is cool but getting to play them digitally as don't have a Lynx is nice rven if Atari made then Epyx and others aren't but still its better than nothing and their interesting games. Having the last 2600 collection was fine but I never got Volume 2 only Volume 1 of the PS/4Xbox One related ones. Thing is don't know enough about the others on PS1/2/other systems. But yeah Digital Eclipse's efforts and the remakes are good. Haunted House is cool, Yar's Revenge is good but I still suck at it.
Damn, but I wish Atari still had the licenses to release their classic Road Runner and _Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom_ arcade games, which I haven’t played since... they were in arcades...
I doubt any modification was made to the Indy/Race 500 roms. The "steering controller" is just a rotary encoder. It wouldn't be too difficult to generate the pulses needed to the console to simulate turning the knob from one angle to another with precision, based on the position of an analog stick...
It would have been cool if they had a couple of their pre-2600 home consoles, like the c-380. Though I guess not having a paddle controller is a bit of an issue
This and the TMNT Cowbunga collection are the 2 best compaltion collections you can get on the switch. I really would love to see some DLC for the 50th but dont think its conna happen.
The only issue is that i hear the analog control games are modified for digital control "or thumbstick analog" which essentially ruins them "or makes them much harder than they need to be." Its not the same as a non centering trakball or turn dial. Simple mouse control could have solved this. But oh well. Most of the games were digital to begin with, and the amount of games is nice. Lots of ones ive never played.
@@imaginitivity7853 the jaguar version is in this collection, it would be really expensive to play it natively. I don't even think theres a good emulator for that
Just out of curiosity, do you have any nostalgic connections with atari? I dont really have any myself as i was probably too young (or possibly not even born yet) for it when it was popular.
@@pojr I'm 36 myself and i have never even seen a real 2600 in real life, but my local game store sells cartridges. I have a feeling atari might not have been that big in my home country Sweden 🤔
I tried the arcade version of ladybug. Very similar game, but there is one difference. In maze invader, you're free to move in any direction you'd like, even diagonal. You have a bit more freedom in that sense. In ladybug, however, you're bounded by four directional movement. With that said, ladybug might arguably be better because there's not a lot of reason to give the player that much freedom of movement.
Why none of the later Atari arcade titles such as Marble Madness, Paperboy, Gauntlet, Klax? Guessing it has to do with the fact that those games were made by "Atari Games" and not "Atari" which means the licensing is different.
Those were made by Atari Games. When Atari got sold in 1984 after the console crash of 83, it got split into 2. Atari Corp and Atari Games. Atari Games was the coin up division while Atari Corp was rhe console and computer division. Atari Games eventually got acquired by Warner Bros again so half of Atari is back where it started when it was big. Infogrames owns Atari Corp now and they call themselves Atari now.
It’s one of my favorite Atari arcade games. It’s has a more rogue feel to it than Ladybug and much less stressful. Maybe because you can choose what direction you want to go in for a different new maze. I might even enjoy it more than Pac-Man.
Making Basic Math an unlockable game is absolutely hilarious. Whoever made that decision at Atari or Digital Eclipse needs a raise.
😂
Now, if Atari made a game where the player has to read analog clocks, it would help the kids today even more. 😂
It's always nice to get recognition from a UA-camr.
Keep being awesome man! 👍
Thank you for being here!
You know you've made it in life when POJR acknowledges your existence.
It has been "quite the watch"
The Atari Age was way before my time. However, my dad's first console was a 2600 (back when it was just the VCS.) @pojr says "Jag-Wire". Good Job Homie!

Irony on Star Raiders showing as a 5200 game as it was the launch title for the Atari 800. (The Atari 5200 is the same chipset as the Atari 800)
its not just a massive collection of games. its also a well put together history of Atari. im glad i bought it

It's a fun collection, although I wished included more post-5200 games, especially Lynx and Jaguar games.

I definitely will be picking this up now. I wasn't sure until I watched your video. Thanks for the information and entertainment!
Fun vid! Excellent little compilation, too! I still have a bit of nostalgia for Atari during the golden age.

Great stuff! You really nail each video and it's cool to see someone in their 20s with a keen understanding of retro gaming! Thanks man!

Multiple consoles and the extra content makes this one worth getting. Lots of retro appeal here.
The 2600 was my first console, so it does look quite nostalgic. It's on my wish list - I look forward to getting it at some time in the future.
I love your videos... But what I like the most is seeing you smile... Your smile brightens my days!!!
Another great video. Ninja Golf looks unexpectedly fun.
It is shit

Atari 50 is great. The timeline really made it stand out.
You’re my new favorite channel
I read that, at least in Steam, the Tempest games will work with spinners (at least with the Ultimarc SpinTrak - I assume others, too.) Tempting.
Awesome video!
Something that's been killing me: what's the name of the track that plays during the conclusion?

Wow you're absolutely right. And it's unknown why they removed it.

Can You Review SNK Arcade Collection???
Finally a collection that asks the question: Where did you learn to fly?
if there's no battlezone, i ain't buyin'.
Damn, but I wish Atari still had the licenses to release their classic Road Runner and _Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom_ arcade games, which I haven’t played since... they were in arcades...
I would've liked Checkered Flag for the Jaguar to be included it even had a Atari Lynx version but overall pretty happy
This video made me buy the game, it was worth the buy. Thabks POJR!
Most collections include these unrelated games. I just wished they put them in a separate category
I doubt any modification was made to the Indy/Race 500 roms. The "steering controller" is just a rotary encoder. It wouldn't be too difficult to generate the pulses needed to the console to simulate turning the knob from one angle to another with precision, based on the position of an analog stick...
"Jaguire" lmao
I had a Jagwire
It would have been cool if they had a couple of their pre-2600 home consoles, like the c-380. Though I guess not having a paddle controller is a bit of an issue
Too bad Dig Dug for the 7800 wasn't included. It was a fantastic port. It played great and looked fantastic too.
This and the TMNT Cowbunga collection are the 2 best compaltion collections you can get on the switch. I really would love to see some DLC for the 50th but dont think its conna happen.
Switch is for losers. Only losers play on Switch.
For some reason, finding Zaxxon always seems like a challenge for me!
5k! 10k soon
What's pathetic is Atari could have fit EVERY Atari console game onto this collection...why didn't they?
They can't release a volume 2 if they show all of their cards on volume 1! Lol.
they were trying to recreate STAR CASTLE by Cinematronics
It's worth it just for Tempest
Just get the Snes arcade classic version. They're all there
@@imaginitivity7853 no
It's kind of like how Sonic Gems Collection is worth it for Sonic CD alone. Tempest 2000 is one of the standout titles.
@@imaginitivity7853 the jaguar version is in this collection, it would be really expensive to play it natively. I don't even think theres a good emulator for that
@@pojr Well... Sonic Origins exists you know?
It's version of CD is way better than Gems Collection.
Especially after they do the Plus expansion
I wonder with the release of Airworld, if they're going to finish the contest....
Another weird thing, the Bounty Bob Strikes Back on the Atari 800 and Atari 5200 are essentially the same game.
The Atari 5200 was identical to the Atari 8-bit family under the hood, so porting between the two platforms was very easy.
Yars Revenge for the win!
Just out of curiosity, do you have any nostalgic connections with atari? I dont really have any myself as i was probably too young (or possibly not even born yet) for it when it was popular.
I'm 31 so it was before my time. I got into Atari when I obtained the Jakks Pacific 10 in 1 plug n play console. Maybe I'm a fraud lol
@@pojr I'm 36 myself and i have never even seen a real 2600 in real life, but my local game store sells cartridges. I have a feeling atari might not have been that big in my home country Sweden 🤔
Yeah, I think no Pole Position 2 or 7800 Food Fight is a deal breaker for me as well.
Nice, but in the 7800 Food Fight thought....
No BallBlazer???
:-)
I MUST have this game!!!!!!!!!
If i'll win a sweepstakes or a lottery ,i'll buy and play a copy of Atari 5o.
Jagwire?
I searched the internet high and low for Atari's elusive Jagwire console to no avail.
Liked the review.
You going to compare another collection game?
Sonic collection?
I'm open to the idea! I covered Sonic Origins last year and it was fun. I've played some of the older collections like Sonic Mega Collection Plus.
@@pojr I haven't seen that video yet I'm going to have to check it out
@@pojr Are you going back for Origins Plus when that comes out?
Great video but "Jag-wire", really?
great reaction legendary game
Pojr saying "Jag-wire" is really confusing if you don't know wgat6 he's referring to. 😆
I never heard anyone say Jaguar as Jag-wire.
I like my Retron 77 for playing Retro VCS games
How the hell are you supposed to play swordquest without the comic books?
Maze invader is just a clone of LadyBug (colleco)
Atari collections have not been the same since Atari lost the rights to Battlezone. It's a bummer.
I own an Atari T-shirt!
Your lip smacking is like ASMR… love the channel dude, keep it up!
POJR you are cool.
Maze Invaders looks more like a Ladybug clone
It’s one of my favorite Atari arcade games. It’s has a more rogue feel to it than Ladybug and much less stressful. Maybe because you can choose what direction you want to go in for a different new maze. I might even enjoy it more than Pac-Man.
jagwire?
