I made a video of this episode because I liked it a lot, especially the relation between The Doctor and River. These are, for me, their best moments in this episode.

What I didn’t get the first time I watched this episode I didn’t realise that River keeps her eyes on the Angel to protect the Doctor. She is fighting back her own tears to let the Doctor mourn. That’s love.

@Philip Tucker No, they deserved each other. They spent 24 years together on darillium, the doctor lets river kill him and reassures her that its okay the entire time, that she's just over there and it's okay. Those two sacrificed for each other and comforted each other, and it's a damn shame we don't get more river song.

I mean, not to spoil the moment or such, but he's also a pragmatic guy, and knew he was the last of his regeneration cycle. He didn't need it anyway.

@@jakobejaxon7296 yeah, but at that time he didnt know, plus the way i understand it, the time lords lock his/her regenerative cycle at 12 so that they can erase their memory and start anew so at that time, it was the final regeneration of that cycle, the time lords then unlocked their regeneration, but the way Rassillon was talking in Heaven sent, there is a change they didnt even put a limit this time

After this we should get at least one-two episodes of River being Doctor's exclusive companion. She should have traveled with him for as long, as it was possible.

The sweetest moment is when The Doctor is comforting River and being gentle with her hurt wrist. I think he says “that must hurt, oh come here”
But that was her way of saying "Don't mind me! There is only one of you!" She and Amy were really offended by that action.

@@dublino3162 i think it's because river talks about her emotional pain from the love for the doctor and he, blind as usual, can only notice her physical pain. and by saying "wrist is bad too" she subtly explains that the pain she talks about is not the pain in the wrist
The little things River does are the best... Watching the angel so that the doctor could cry and mourn at the end, leaving the breaks on bc she knows he likes the sound, subtly comforting him, etc

Nope, the best part is when River leaves the brakes on because she knows that the Doctor loves the sound the TARDIS makes.
@Cliven Longsight I wonder about this. I have an '08 Honda Civic, second owner, automatic. She runs as silent as you could want. Granted, here in the States, we rarely need the emergency brake, so maybe that's what your reference was. But most of the South and west...flat and full of parking lots, so not a lot of parallel park on hills. Granted, I got lucky, but still.
@@nedsheppa1279 a tardis is normally silent, the iconic whooshing sound has been explained by river as the tardis's brakes, and that the doctor keeps accidentally or intentionally leaving them engaged

They had been flirty and had some great chemistry throughout the time we'd seen River, but it was so nice for once to have their timelines line up where they both knew they were in love and married to each other. It was such a different dynamic that we only saw in the date themed minisodes and didn't get again until Twelve's episode with her (once it finally clicked for her that the Doctor somehow got another regeneration and was with her the whole adventure). I really wish we got more of it, cuz it was so much fun and really cute to see them as actual spouses. Even if Alex couldn't have stayed for the rest of the season, maybe she could have had a couple more adventures, and then help him find his next companion.
Same!! I always wished we got a whole season of them with their timelines synced up once they were both in love. I've seen people say that their travels might not have been as interesting because they're too powerful together, but I actually think it would've been a really fun Bonnie and Clyde dynamic. The writing team was really solid back then, they could've found a way
River was so strong when Amy and Rory died I never even thought that she kept her eyes on the angel so the doctor could breakdown
I love how well River knows the doctor.
Just realized why the Doctor was so unsettled by what he saw in the book. It wasn't just the chapter 12 title, but that title combined with the chapter 11 one, which together implied that Amy would die and they'd have to say goodbye to each other. 1:40

Remember, River doesn’t think the doctor loves him. She doesn’t think she’s worthy. That’s why she slapped him.
Blah I think she slapped him because they both are iffy with the love thing. They both are absolutely crazy for each other (just crazy too), and they don’t really know how to show feelings toward another in romantic moments. Plus, he was wasting his regeneration energy on her, and she doesn’t believe that she is worthy of that.

Satsu #Dead well at the time this came out 11 was supposed to have one more regeneration in his regeneration cycle but when the Day of the Doctor was planned they took that regeneration and made the past war doctor so technically he was supposed to have some energy left
@@KidZoom1 well actually there is an episode that could fit as an explanation why the doctor could use regenerative energy even tho he didnt have any regeneration left ( the fact that he's the timeless child could count, but technically his regenerations were locked so it was still the last he had for this cycle and he didnt know about that at the time) in the episode The Twin Dilemma, an old Who episode, we see a time lord named Azmael initiate a thirteenth regeneration. Natually since time lords are limited to twelve , this regeneration kills him (which was the intent to begin with) but it does show that even when they have no regenerations left, time lords do still have some regenerative energy left in their body
We were definitely robbed of having River as a companion. She should have made up the second half of season 7 and Clara could've been introduced season 8 instead :/

I agree river should have been his companion for the rest of season 7. Clara isn’t a bad companion I just think her arc could be moved to season 8. However they problems with this is that the first episode of season 7 is about Clara.

The brass plate the doctor is looking at belongs to a 12 cylinder marine diesel engine made by Rolls Royce. It was made in the 1950s and 1960s and used in small warships, hence the space for a NATO stock number.
i just realized that besides rory, river and the doctor are amy's two best friends in the world. its kinda human normal when your two best friends marry each other but very awkward when one of them is your daughter and the other is an alien who you used to have a crush on.
When Amy turns and says farewell its breaks my heart.
His anger when he saw the title of the last chapter where Amy dies legitimately scared me. Matt, never stop being incredible.
There are many reasons why I love this episode, and the only one that makes me hate it is the death of the Ponds
When The 11th Doctor heals her wrist, I thought it was the sweetest gesture, cause he does love her he just won’t go and say so. Then River slaps him, because she was so unselfish when she gave him that energy he now uses to heal her wrist. She realized The Doctor was worth saving so when he heals her wrist with the regeneration energy SHE gave him, in her mind - it is like he is a saying “I am The Doctor, I will heal you and I don’t care if it costs me…” - that’s selflessness vs. unselfishness…and a sign that they loved each other.
When she’s with Capaldi in the Christmas episode and she says He’s not sentimental enough or in love enough to care about her, yet she yells at him here for being too sentimental 🙃🙃😂😂😂😂
The bit where he just left her to break her hand is the sort of behavior to which she referred in the xmas special imo

What we don’t see.
After the Angel takes the Ponds, the Doctor retrieves a 10 lbs. sledgehammer from the TARDIS and makes gravel outta the Angel.
I would *LOVE* to see The Doctor Destroy that Fucking Angel. Ain't nobody Who's Pissed off the Doctor walks away for Very Long.
Angels can break through steel walls. Your toys are useless. Don't forget they could displace you in time or break our neck.
But can an angel stand up to shaped explosive charges attached to its back?

One of the reasons why River got mad at him for healing her hand was because in this time this was considered the last regeneration of the Doctor (technically 12th) and he just basically used some of his last lifespan to heal her
1:40 - 2:00 the same desperation, anxiety and realization just like David's doctor.
This episode had some of the best moments with them

Best moments of Dr. Who are during Matt's and David's time on the series. These characters were so much fun to watch and had deep meaning in each others lives. Great writing. Great cast.

This sort of friendship the Doctor had with Amy is very much like Rose's and that's why I think people always argue between the two as who is the best companion and while that's true, there is a very stark difference in the Doctor's relationships with either.
Rose does helps him to love again, to care and she is so lovely and dear to him that he would "burn up a sun" just to say good bye. In those last moments where we know, as the audience, that love exists between the two and they don't have to say it, tells us how they feel, we know Rose and Ten love each other. Rose is after all the first face two of his regenerations saw first and that's why Rose is so special to him, and to us, so he would do anything to keep her but forces much stronger than they keep them apart. Also remember that Rose joins the Doctor at 19. Most likely she's still very young when they are forced apart.
And then there's Amy, he's coming off having lost Donna, his best friend and he's so, so lonely that the first face he sees is of young Amelia Pond and he loves her immediately! But then he gets it all wrong and young Amelia is grown up and then he sees this Amy and he immediately falls for her - and by this I don't mean romantically - haven't you ever experienced meeting your kids/nieces/nephews and you just love them - that's what that is! And so he is not willing to lose her! "Come on POND!" Amy was 22 when she started traveling with the Doctor but she made the choice to leave him and that to me makes me wonder that if Rose had been given the chance to travel with him longer (Maybe 10-15 years more just like Amy) she would have grown up long enough to make the conscious choice to leave the Doctor and settle down.
And I think that's where we differ in their stories, Rose never grew up and Amy did.
If we look at Rose there are some of us that long for our younger days and love them and lived for those days and we wish we could go back all the time.
And then we see Amy and we can also agree that some days it's ok to live your life, do the hard choices, grow up and know that there are better days ahead.
The Fairytale ending was Rose's but Amy's was Real Life.

I truly believe 11th loves River. Clara is definitely set for 12th.
Yh he does but I think the problem was for him her death was and is always on her mind like his impending death so it stopped him from fully showing his affections, for river she didn’t believe he loved her or trust her and was just showing the same compassion and love he shows for everyone, it didn’t help that their time stream were out of sync so River grew up with this loving fully trusting doctor but as she saw him more the less loving and trusting he became causing her to doubt him and his feelings towards her and herself.

My understanding is that when a Timelord is on their last regeneration they still have some regenerative energy stored inside their bodies but not enough to actually regenerate. It’s why it can take them weeks to finally die, their body is constantly trying to regenerate and it has just enough energy left to keep them alive and prolong their suffering but not enough to actually save them. There’s a difference between healing a broken bone and rebuilding an entire body from the ground up and replacing any parts that are badly damaged. I don’t remember which doctor said it, but he said that time lords always try to die amongst their own because it helps with the suffering and they can help them pass on faster
River Song is the only reason why the Doctor didn't evaporated all Angels.
How was he able to spend that energy? River knew he couldn't regenerate (she said that in "husbands of river song"). I find it hard to believe that they just didn't have that fact in the plot yet, but they have been planning this and River's story since 2008

I realised that amy read doctor breaks something. but when he lands Tardis, he breaks a vase. which means she didn't have to break her wrist.
In the book River said "why do you have to break mine". The vase wasn't hers so she had to break her wrist

Maybe because River knows that he is the last version of regeneration cycle that's why she's upset and the regeneration energy that he gave to her is his own regeneration energy not enough to make him regenerate but enough to heal him on a certain level. As in his last bit of regeneration energy. If that makes sense

the new "Timeless Child" plotline shows this, and any other thing the doctor did with regeneration energy, did nothing to the doctor. being an immortal deity kind of ruins moments like these
The Doctor was raised to believe that he like all the other Time Lords had 12 regenerations. Therefore its not the Timeless Child plot line that disrupts it, its just the fact that it was always assumed that even as the “last” Time Lord he/she was like all the other Gallifreyan Time Lords.
@@ellexie8377 I’d say it makes more sense if they had a regeneration cap put on them upon being regressed into a child, making it biological rather than a placebo effect.
I didn't think of it until now. But why did the grave remain the same? If Amy was buried with Rory, then why didn't the grave expand? Unless it did and it never showed us.

What is the music at the end called?
It's the theme from Melody Pond, although I think the exact music here isn't fully in the soundtrack. It's the same music that plays during the scene where the Doctor "dies" in Impossible Astronaut and has a Viking funeral in the lake

I never understood why they couldn't break the angel that was holding rivers wrist?
If the Doctor had not gone mad and run off, maybe theyy would have thought of that and changed things, but the future set itself after he read that chapter title
The Doctor is compassionate unless they harm him or others he won’t harm them plus that angel was being held captive and tortured would have been an extra blow to do so

Isn't the singing towers happened right before the library for river? So there's no way of knowing he will regenerate and I thought maybe she doesn't know about the war doctor but nope she has his picture so there's no way of her knowing that doctor has another regeneration in stored, she should think that the eleventh doctor should be the last
