Everyone commenting on me moving away from the mic while I'm in the moment and playing should go listen to some live Trane concerts, namely Mr. PC live in Paris.
Also happens a lot in John Coltrane’s live album, called Selflessnes featuring My Favorite Things. They literally play this same tune and Coltrane does exactly what Pat does with microphone
Totally! This blew me away while visiting Japan: jazz music and culture is so highly regarded and there is such a lively music scene with lots of young people too. It also surprised me to hear so much jazz in public and commercial spaces. Lots of times I felt myself immersed in some awesome fusion piece or something rare from the sixties while waiting for my coffee or even a random elevator. Great video. Amazing musicians. I love the vibe.
Gotta admit, probably my favorite arrangement of this tune. The band was so crazy with the energy. Patrick was fantastic as always- and the rest of the band had no issue at all keeping up with him. What a fantastic group. The final take on the melody was just full of soul.
I don't know if the chords were altered, or if it was just how it was played, but it definitely had a Chick Corea vibe, especially with that guitar melody in the back that was unified at the end. Amazing as always!
Insane set! My only gripe is we needa mic up Patrick's sax at this point 😭That standing mic can't capture that entire solo well enough, especially when Patrick's really feelin it. Lovely rendition, thank you so much for sharing!
Random question: is Takafumi Suenaga a fan of Kids on the Slope? I'm pretty sure he quoted the school fest solo just a little, and it made me smile. Also, Merry Christmas!
Thank you so much for the countless hours that went into getting to a point where you can all blow like this and also for sharing it (for free no less)! Top draw stuff, guys! Makes one wish to live in Japan to be closer to the Bird of our generation. Gorgeous guitar sound. Tasty, seemingly effortless double bass playing, drummer and everyone listening so well. Wow, man!
Wow man ...... I just stumbled on this and it blew me away....! I heard some Coltrane, some Pharoah Sanders and you in there man .... Loved it...! Sounds amazing man....! Play'on my Brother.....!
Pat I love you bro and the jazz cat in me is loving how you express yourself during your solos but the sound engineer in me is BEGGING you to play into the mic 😭
I rather play with a clip on or no mic at all. Trane does the same things in his live recordings. Sometimes you just lose track of where you are, I'm not in this physical space anymore.
@@PatrickBartleyMusic it's for that reason alone that when I record jam sessions I just put one or two mics up on either side of the band if the players are good they can balance unfortunately when you're recording something and it's reliant on what the mic is hearing and not the room it doesn't really work that way
Wow what a way to jazz up a classic song!! I found your videos while looking for new Saxophone music ( for myself to Play my Alto Saxophone) and came across your videos!! Thank You so much! You guys are solid!! Kudos! Can you please tell me your set up please Sax , mouthpiece and strength of reed you use if not to much asking!! Looking for to your next music
Awesome arrangement Patrick! Thanks for being a huge inspiration. Here's an arrangement I did of "My Favorite Things" a couple years ago: ua-cam.com/video/LW2sXxrRQhY/v-deo.html&ab_channel=JordanChung

Man, it's so cool how Japan has become a second home for Jazz.

YESSS!
COME ON PAT, SPEAK THAT SOUL, LET IT SING 🔥🔥🔥

I mean, I'd call it a Wilson Pickett, soul/R&B vamp. But sure
Ese tono me pone la piel de gallina, una sensibilidad que pocos músicos tienen.
EMOCIONANTE SER CONTEMPORÁNEO A PATRICK
insane dance moves tho
サックスソロの名探偵コナンっぽいフレーズとかケニーギャレットぽい抜け感のあるところかっこよすぎる。
にしてもドラム気持ちよさそうに叩くなぁ。かっこいい。
Felt the heat from your souls, it was like looking at a big colorful fireplace
Wonderful 🔥 to keep me warm during my first White Christmas! ❤️🔥
This Patrick may be my new fave. What tonal character!
You Gentlemen sound Absolutely Magnificent. Bravo & Much Applause!
Been playing jazz for decades. This is my favorite arrangement of this chart by far! I'm glad a student shared it with me!
Gotta love that Kenny Garrett vibe !

This is so beautiful! (I love how in recordings like this you can hear the other players go "whoaaahah!" at a cool moment, too)

Thank you for this! What an offering!
I always thought you needed a tenor to do this song justice but I was so incredibly wrong, great playing!
My new favourite version of this tune.
hot fire
Love it!! You never fail to impress 👍
HI Patrick, I really enjoyed this version of the tune. Exquisite taste in all solos and the intensity at the end was amazing. Thanks for this video!!

Yo, Nice.
Patrick's Tricks are tricky! People, go to the original sources. Pat also plays with a microphone... because to diversify is Stars' toy.
2:30 kids on the slope reference!?!? or is that taken from a jazz record I am unaware of

Wouldn't be surprised - Pat certainly knows his way around vgm!

No fair, you have an all Asian over achiever back up so you sound great...lol you sound great nonetheless!
Something frantic about his playing I just don’t get it
Playing is good . Tone is way different with the new setup/horn . 🤷🏾♂
Chinatown meets Coltrane¡,
Not sure I understand the reference - they are in Japan
