You might have more joy batoning with a bigger baton and onto a firm surface like a tree stump or even the pieces you batoned first.
7Cr17MoV is supposed to be a corrosion resistant carbon steel so although it shouldn't rust easily it still needs the same care as a higher carbon steel knife.
