  • I recently got to ride the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 on the road and off road. I managed to do a couple of hours on it and form some first thoughts

    I have had mine for three weeks and really pleased with it. I had the previous model and the new 450 is a lot more refined. Slick gearbox. Really enjoying it. Haven't done much off road yet.

      It's a great bike for sure. Glad you're enjoying it!

    Great to hear your thoughts on the new himmy. Going to test ride one of these in a few weeks to see if it will be my next bike. Just waiting to be fit enough and get paid out after being knocked off my Triumph Tiger 900 GT last month by a car driver that didn't see me when pulling out. Still waiting for the ribs to heal but at least I have the perfect excuse for getting a new bike again this year! 😀

      Some people will go to any lengths to get a new bike 😂.
      It's a really great bike, but don't expect a unicorn....

      @HW-kf7hi Місяць тому +1

      I think the closest you can get to a 'unicorn' bike is by having several to cover everything, which isn't a bad thing!

    A nice review, very nice and as for weight jeez my KLR 650 was heavy this looks like a good replacment.

      @lightweightadv  16 днів тому

      I'd say its a great replacement for something like the KLR 👌🏻

    I test rode one 3 weeks ago and it's wrong to compare it to the old one as it's nothing like it. I couldn't fault it one bit, I was surprised how spritely it is for a 450 single. Ride height and balance is spot on.

    • @lightweightadv
      @lightweightadv  Місяць тому +2

      It's got a nice balance to it, and it definitely rides well. It can't be ridden as easily as a "regular" trail bike (CRF etc), but it hustles along pretty nicely

    Great vid, and thats after Nathan the Postmans first vid also dropped this morning. Travel Bike is the key an thats why its gonna sell well.

    Honda are missing a trick big time..if they put a 450cc engine in the crf with the same service interval as the crf300l then that would be the perfect lightweight adventure bike in my humble opinion.
    I would buy it tomorrow

    • @lightweightadv
      @lightweightadv  Місяць тому

      They were 95% there with the CRF450L. If only they had the service intervals...

    • @steveinskip4897
      @steveinskip4897 Місяць тому +1

      @@lightweightadvHonda we’re massively pessimistic regarding the service intervals on the 450. With the reduced power output and synthetic oil there’s very little degradation at 1000km. Mind you it only takes 10 minutes an oil change so it’s no great problem either way.

    • @lightweightadv
      @lightweightadv  Місяць тому

      100% this. I like a longer service interval, but a shorter interval is no bad thing in terms of engine care, and when it's so easy....🤷🏻‍♂️

    Nice update. I think how it performs off road or off tar has been well covered and it seems to do very well. Many are more curious how it performs on the road. As a travel bike even in South America you'll likely be doing 70mph at times, or riding through Europe to get to the fun places. Is it so comfortable then.

    • @lightweightadv
      @lightweightadv  Місяць тому +1

      In a word, yes. It's a solid road bike. I've not tested this of course, as it would be irresponsible, but I suspect it would be great at 80mph 😏🤷🏻‍♂️

    40 hp puts it with the klr650, tenere 660, and the dr650, all 30 yr old designs and all nearing the end of their production?
    Seamless replacement?
    Very tempting to have a look in a couple of years time to see just how cheap a low mileage second hand example sells for.
    Some buyers will be bored silly, others underwhelmed.

    • @lightweightadv
      @lightweightadv  Місяць тому +2

      Agreed, myluch like other bikes in this market. There will be some bargains in a couple of years, perhaps less. I personally think it fills the niche of travel mule perfectly. If someone buys it wkth that intention, they won't go far wrong

    • @mark.e.p
      @mark.e.p 29 днів тому

      You're comparing it against 650's?. I ride a rotax engined 650 single that knocks out 52HP, and the new Himalyan out performs in every way except it's a bit heavier.

  • @leifiseland1218

    Hmm.. have you put any thoughs into the possible wight savings yet? It's 181Kg dry of course (which i think includes the 1kg sari-guard for India?), but it seems to me a lot of weight is due to the use of low cost materials..🤔 There's an Indian guy that has shaved off almost 20 Kg by pretty much just removing things he felt were less necessary.. 🤨

    • @lightweightadv
      @lightweightadv  Місяць тому

      There's a lot of "travel" extras on there as standard. A centre stand, crash bars, rear rack etc etc. It's not a light bike, I think the CRF is a better fit if that's what you're after, in my opinion

    • @leifiseland1218
      @leifiseland1218 Місяць тому

      @@lightweightadv Hmm... I'd disagree.. While that might work for a "tiny" person, like Noraly (who still has ended up having to do considerable upgrades to the suspension of "Alaska"..), I'm not a tiny person.. However, modifying by altering materials & equipment on a bike like the Himmy 450, can be done at a relatively low cost.. Take a look at how much is made of mild steel on the stock Himmy..🧐 While that might be lighter than cast iron, there are alternatives that are more weight efficient, while retraining strength.. I do understand why RE has done those choices though, they need to keep the unit cost of the bike at a minimum.. Which creates good grounds for aftermarket mods..🧐

    • @varun2250
      @varun2250 Місяць тому +2

      The reason for more usage of steel is to keep the cost low, true. Since it has to sell not just in Europe but as well as in Asia, Southern America and Africa.
