- Sewing up some cartridge loops or ammo loops on a western style gun belt using 207 bonded nylon thread and a Cobra class 3 industrial leather sewing machine. I'm using 9/11 oz and 3/4oz holster/strap vegetable tanned leather.

Anyone else gotten oil on the leather from the machine? no? just me? haha
all the time,, i usually sew a scrap piece first to get it all off, but sometimes i forget to do that...

Yessir! I try and remember to do a small test run before committing it to a work piece. I practiced doing 12 gauge cartridge loops - I think your source material you mentioned was 'Bills Place' -How to make a bullet belt - machine sewing the loops..... He mentions the technique you were using.
Allll the time, I just wipe it off with a cloth! When I don’t get it I usually put a drop or two in 😅

Thank you for giving out your template for free; there was a lot of work in just making the pattern on the computer much less the calculations involved. But even more thanks for explaining how you measured the loops for what ever cartridges you may want to use.

I have found that sewing the cartridge loop directly to the holster belt the cartridges mark up the belt and stretch the loop at the top when withdrawn (perhaps I’m making the loops to tight). So I started sewing cartridge loops on a strap and sewing the strap to holster belt. That slight clearance seems to make a big difference. Love your work brother.
Of all the builds I have seen I have wondered the same thing. I guess it depends on the look you are trying to achieve. Being an active competition shooter I would expect the extra clearance would not only save your belt from getting marked up but would also make it easier to extract the cartridges when needed.

Thanks for the great content - I started watching your videos and almost bought a flatbed machine but went with the Cobra Class 3 too. So much possibility. Thanks for making the patterns downloadable I made a quick draw rig for a 9mm Glock which is pretty funny and totally period incorrect!. That's really good information. You do good work too. You know if you line the belt you don't even need to sew across the bullet loop. And I find that to be a little stronger for the belt loop.

If I use too much oil in oiling my class four I may get some oil on leather. Test pieces,test pieces,test pieces. Nice tutorial. Naptha on a small dauber will lift oil out. Again for a young artesian you do a very good job. Blessings on you and your family.🤠

Thanks for the vid's, I am new to leather work and ran across you vid on sewing machines, I spent almost 2 hours hand sewing a belt and was looking for information on beginners machines, towards the last loop on your vid, does the machine,,, IF it goes thru your fingernail does it tie the knot in the leather or in the middle of the tip of the finger LOL. benefit of having a machine that will run slow, at least for me. Thanks for all the info.

Thank you! Excellent tutorial. I especially liked the explanation of how to determine the loop size for your particular cartridge. This is a helpful reference when using different size cartridges or if using a different leather thickness than 3/4 oz for making the loops. The template download was a nice addition and much appreciated. Question: if one were to hand sew between the loops, would it be necessary to zigzag between each loop, or could each stitch line be independent of the others? Thanks again for putting this out there for us!

Do you think I could make 9mm bullet loops or just make a separate pocket for some ammo on the pouch? Didn't know if bullet loops would hold a rimless cartridge and don't want to waist leather trying

One problem Ive run into while horse back. When the loops are placed on the belt too low the cartridges have a tendency to hit the cantle and pop out. Ive lost a few rounds that way.
yeah i could see that happening. Though this is a single holster rig so the cartridge loops are all on the opposite side of the holster as opposed to the back of the belt. So it probably wouldn't happen with this belt, but that's a good thing to know. Thank you
Ok... I need help deciding. I see him sewing on the cobra in this video. I also know he has a Techsew 2750. I’m looking at the cobra class 3 or the techsew 4800 pro. Comments? Opinions?
Great info, thanks! With the diagonal stitch inside the cartridge loop, is there a risk of wear on the thread from regular use that might cause the stitch to break? Seems like a possibility, but conjecture doesn’t always match reality.
It's definitlely possible but i've never seen it happen. It's a very common method for ammo loops
I ever so gently scratched the surface of leather craft couple years ago. Then life happened..... I'm now trying to get back into it, but ive had a hard time figuring the "leather" part out. Have you done a video on leather selection? Like types, cuts, weights and and what the ideal use for the different types and cuts.
I have a long time ago but it's old and really poorly done haha. I'll make a new one soon about that

Great Video Parker. The design of the gunbelt is really amazing, you must of taken a lot of time designing it. I like the new Cobra machine. How does it compare to the Cowboy? It looks like the foot is better made. Al bane has a really great practice video on Cobra sewing techniques.
It's really similar to the cowboy, not much difference in my opinion. They're both awesome

Not sure of the name but it's the one that came with it already installed. I think it's a pretty standard foot for harness stitchers

This is a Cobra class 3. Great for heavy weight leather projects like gun belts, holsters, tack, etc...
Best machine for a beginner?
Totally depends on what you plan on using it for. If you'd like something easy to learn on for some small leather goods (10oz or less)at a hobby level, I'd recommend the Tandy/sailrite Stitchmaster pro. I have a review video on it. If you'd like something a little more professional i'd go with a cobra class 20. If you plan on JUST doing heavy weight stuff, like holsters, sheaths, tack, saddlery, etc...i'd recommend the cobra class 3 or 4 (like the one in this video)

Still have it. It's for bags and other medium weight projects. This is a harness stitcher, meant for heavy weight belts, holsters, sheaths, scabbards, tack, etc...Different purposes
@@whitandpark This was my first major purchase and your review did influence my decision on this particular machine. Thus far it has performed flawlessly, thanks. However, I plan on moving up to a heavier thread (from #69 to #138) and fear that this will be the start of my sewing problems! Just to ask, as far as stitching belts what size thread do you normally use, as this is what I plan on making more of in the near future?

5 per cylinder for single actions. I would probably go with 20 rds on the belt. Just my 2¢
In a 1873 SAA its 6 rounds per cylinder
@@whitandpark yes but if you are carrying it, and your pistol doesn’t have a cross bolt safety, you run the risk of the pistol going off if the hammer is hit by something and you have all 6 chambers loaded. 6 round cylinder, but carry 5.
@@bodiewest9202 Jesus... If the cylinder holds 6 rounds . you will want to have enough rounds on the belt to equal the amount in the cylinder not the amount of 5 rounds because of safety....
@@tlewiz7274 you get your rocks off? I just made a comment about what I would do, not what should be done. Don’t be a dick. Especially when with 20 rds you would actually have 2 cartridges extra after 3 full cylinders. So what’s the problem with 20?
@@bodiewest9202 not trying to be "dick". Just saying it makes more since the way he does it... But if you are so into having a number of rounds divisible by 5 you could put 30 loops on the belt. (It still works for 6)

This FREE template is free because you made no mention on what it's for. To the untrained, it looks like a diagram of the Gaza Pyramid.
why are you not finishing the leather before sewing? edges look rough and are unfinished.
the leather for the loops is tight grained and thin enough, you don't need to burnish. I dye and burnish the edges of the belt (the heavy weight leather) at the end
@@whitandpark I think staining the edge of the loops enhance the overall look of the loops. Then a quick rub with a cloth, denims good, would be sufficient to finish a good product. In addition do you have a number one edge shave. I was always encouraged to edge belts gun belts and harness, as it gives a professional finish. Also prevents the belt from rubbing against clothing a clean finish that will last.
