Theorists, do you ever worry that someone will STEAL your face? Now, that may sound like some weird science fiction kind of question, but it may be the future. With the rise of using technology to de-age celebrities or bring them back from the dead, like we've seen happening with more and more frequency in Star Wars, it poses some BIG concerns. Theorists, we are diving into the weird world of deepfakes and what it may mean for the future of the entertainment industry and beyond.

Dude, if this technology got so advanced that each individual viewer could select their own cast for a movie that is already out. Going back to watch a remake of Iron Man and saying "You know, my buddies went with a classic Robert Downey Jr, but I think I want to see Tom Cruise do it. Disney is actually really shady when it comes to 'saving people's faces.' I don't know if it's still in there, but a few years back I applied to work at a Disney Store. A STORE. In a Mall. Where you buy little costumes for kids and stuff. There was a whole section of the contract that basically said if for whatever reason your picture was taken while you were doing the INTERVIEW, not even for being hired and working there, they could use your face for advertising. You had to sign off on it before you were able to submit your resume.

The real scary part of this is at 13:44. Some actors have ethical lines that they would never cross that with this technology a studio could MAKE the actor cross that line. This introduces a lot of moral questions that any actor should be asking and putting in any contract they sign going forward.

And I'm sure we'll still need actors to give a good basis for deepfaking in the next generation, too. The worry is that it's only a matter of time before having actors becomes a waste of money, because why pay millions to get a 50 year old Leonardo Dicaprio who's getting too old for all this... when you can just deepfake him in for free? Eventually AI will also be able to replicate the creative flare and artistic contribution an actor can give.

It actually started in the late 1980's. Morphing was the first time. Actors were asking back then if they had legal rights to the use of their "persona" and if they had any right of refusal. The fear was that say you are a highly bankable Tom Cruise or even lesser character actor and someone does a budget cut crappy job with your persona diminishing your marketability. Thta's serious stuff. Virtual Actors were called Avatars at first, by gaming people, and it predates Cameron's use.

Studios will no longer need new faces because they will have all the old ones that they can just keep reusing. Also, most major film studios won’t want to risk the success of their movie on the popularity of a new actor. It is definitely a cool concept but I think there should be limits to how much this technology is used. This is just my opinion however and you are free to disagree.

One thing, deepfakes sucked. The effort into having a good enough deepfake is not worth it for most studios. Only disney and with its legions of toy buyers want to try to milk the nostalgia as much as they can. Try watching a play. Almost nobody cared about unknown actors, but a good play is still agood play.

The actors are not popular just because of their face, the acting itself it's important. Getting rid of actors just in favor of deep fakes is not very viable, it's more expensive (because they have to pay the artists and the equipment to do the deep fake, that requires work too) and also, they would still need an actor for the mocap.
The only advantage for that would be to have a face that other people could find more relatable. However people that choose which movies watch based on the actors usually is not because they like their face but because they like either the acting or they trust that the actors would not work in a bad film.
However, after few movies with deep fakes that fail to deliver in those aspects, people would stop falling into that trap.
If you are reading this and thinking that I'm overestimating society and people is stupid, keep in mind that people who choose to watch movies based on the actors are at least moderately informed about films.

The truth is that these are amazing tools that as MatPat said can be used to extend an actors abilities just like other special effects. But I fear for what this change will do to the future of acting as a whole. Why would anyone want to risk losing money by gambling on the popularity of a new actor when they can count of the long time fanbases of fantastic actors that died a long time ago. At this rate you could take an actor when they were an adult and when they were a child and have them star in the same movie. This makes the career of acting harder than it already is and essentially the same as oil barons, if you weren't born into this family of acting or publicity then you just aren't an actor.

The last time I went to Disney World, I noticed a lot more... interaction? with the rides, probably due to magic band tracking. During Star Tours specifically, the face of an audience member was integrated into the ride, for example. It's making me wonder if they might be permanently recording the likenesses of tourists. Think about it- if they really were doing that, and if this technology continues to grow, imagine how much money Disney would save on hiring background extras for movies when they could just recreate the faces of some randos who were at Epcot last year. Actors are still needed to drive the performance of animated characters. The synthesized voice for deepfake Luke obviously isn't perfected yet, and they still needed a person to be photographed in costume acting the scene out as a base for their deepfake face. Applying digital effects over another actor's performance is the typical method of reviving dead actors' likenesses.
We're already at a point where computer effects can make photo-realistic fake humans, but we're a long way off from a computer also being able to generate a full acting performance from nothing. Even in the far off future where computers may be able to create realistic performances, we'll probably STILL have humans controlling those computers to dictate what the performance is. So instead of an actor giving a performance, you'd have a human with a different job title using software as a tool to create the performance of many characters. Kind of like how animators use software to create animated performances right now today.

Honestly, as much as I’m an advocate for technology, it just reminds me of how Disney doesn’t really do 2D animation anymore. While yes, we should embrace new tech, we shouldn’t just ditch the old stuff. But it’s cheaper to hire 3-D animators and CGI artists, who don’t have as much union backing as 2D animators and makeup artists and costumers (at least from what I’ve read). And the same applies here: it’s cheaper to just use CGI deepfakes of a famous actor than actually pay them, and it’s safer to use CGI deepfakes of a dead actor than to hire someone new to play a beloved role. And… it breaks my heart. Actors are people, and should be given the money, and credit, and autonomy that they deserve. They’re not action figures, they’re not just their characters, they’re human beings, but their likeness, their voices, their souls? They’re being sold to the highest bidder, and it’s honestly disappointing. I hope that as we move forward, the entertainment industry stops being able to sell on nostalgia trips, and that this nonsense is pushed out. It’s not about technology, it’s about respecting people.

I would feel much better about Disney using a face forever if they just made up the face from scratch. You could still have actors do the movements and stuff, and the characters would never die. It would just mean that the actors don't get famous, because the editors do the magic instead. I think that would be okay, but I don't know how we'd transition to that.

Not too far of a stretch to slap the output of the first system into the input of the second. BAM, infinite randomly generated people. Want to make them older or less facial hair? Coming from a technical stand point I don't see this happening ever! The amount of work you'd have to do and how much it would cost to create 1 photo realistic character and believeable voice for a whole movie would make the process completely not worth it. Either it's fully hand animated which will take a heck of alot of time, effort, and money, or there is still an actor being paid to be the body double, then you have to make sure the body double's acting, delivery of lines, body language, chemistry with other characters/actors works well for who they are trying to replicate, and if they're good enough to do it flawlessly then that's also gonna come with a huge price tag. In the end getting the original actor in the first place is still going to be the cheaper and prefered method, I can imagine this (especially deep fakes) being used for characters of actors who have passed away or for deaging, but I highly doubt it's going to replace actors completely in the industry.

In the case of things like Star Wars, while there's still a lot to talk about ethics wise, I think tech like this overall does become beneficial for the stories. Star Wars has been told out of order for decades. Since not everyone is going to read the books and comics, if they're gonna get stories out there that take place between stories we've already seen, this helps a lot. For those of us who are huge Clone Wars fans, we just got to see Ahsoka Tano, Anakin's only apprentice, who he treated like a daughter, finally meet one of Anakin's actual children. These stories make sense in the grander sense. Is live action Tarkin weirder than Tarkin showing up in Clone Wars or Rebels? Sure! But, I think, so long as it's done properly, it can be a huge help to things like this.
That being said, I think full films like this would feel hollow. Cameos and certain characters being brought back is one thing, but a digitally de-aged Ghostbusters 3 sounds horrifying. 😂

The only reason studios are doing this is because it saves them money and fans just want to see *insert character here* meet *insert character here* . Casting a new actor to play a younger version of someone works just fine and it has for decades of film and TV. This just feels like stepping on the graves of dead actors who have no say in whether or not their corpse is resurrected for a cameo to make fanboys go "oooh" and "aaah". It rubs me the wrong way

@@inyrui Even "recently", they didn't CGI a young Harrison Ford for _Solo_ ; they got a younger actor to play him. And for all of Solo's flaws, the casting wasn't one of them.

@@Mega-Brick exactly, I didn't mind that he didn't look exactly like Ford, I thought he did a fine job in Solo, and personally it was my favorite film out of all the Disney SW films, even with its flaws. I hope they don't start making this "deaging" thing the norm

apart from the rights issues and distasteful applications, it is an insurance policy for companies in case of untimely deaths. Paul Walker, Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee, Heath Ledger, John Candy, Philip Seymour Hoffman. Good or bad is a question, but having the option is something

Luke in the book of boba sounded really lifeless and emotionless. If Disney wants to make this whole deepfake actor thing work then they need to bring the soul into it more than anything else.

My favorite example of this was that one character in the hunger games. The actor had passed and they hadn’t finished filming. You could barely tell it wasn’t him

Funny how this theory came out hours after Corridor Crews' VFX artists react to the Luke Skywalker deepfake scenes and to see thre different viewpoints of the technology. It's really interesting to see how far the tech has come and yet how far it has to get basically flawless deepfakes.
