    Wow. Fascinating patch, but above all, gorgeous! That sequence from Batumi is outstanding. Stunning timbres. This might be my new favorite piece from you. It's all the more impressive that it's being run from just one module.
    And I'd recognize that tape hiss anywhere at this point ;)

      +r beny oh man, thank you. The support is really appreciated. In all transparency, I had almost let this one go. After making it I started doubting if it was even worth posting. Which is actually why it first ended up on UA-cam instead of my standard Vimeo playlist. All in all it's been a good lesson not to judge my own work too harshly.

      The basics are pretty good. I'm still a bit fuzzy on the clock synced mode. I can certainly get very long cycles out of it, but I find it hard to determine exactly how long they are. I find myself using the Batumi when I don't need precision. I still use the LFOs in my sequencer (Audio Damage Seq-1) when I need something to cycle with precision.

      rhythmic seems to be channel 1 of batumi (square ) into gate of element, channel 1 batumi (saw) into damping of element and channel 3 batumi (square) into mallet of element. For v/oct of element : batumi ? into quantizer into ALM002 - Beast's Chalkboard .. It seems for me to be that

  • @mylespotters
    @mylespotters 8 років тому

    What's your experience been like with the 207? It seems to have a ton of potential yet it's hard to come by, expensive, and apparently somewhat buggy? I'm on the fence of that vs uScale.

    • @fourhexagons
      @fourhexagons  8 років тому

      Yeah, you voice a similar concern of mine. I have yet to really test the 207 to see how *much* better the firmware update made the tracking. I just tend to gate it all the time, and in that mode, it's great and has no tracking issues whatsoever. In fact, that's what is so special about the 207 - the fact that you have 4 channels of gate-able S+H. uScale has no gate in, so it's a very different approach. Using gates with different rhythms allows me to get very different results from each of the channels.
      I do however wish that the 207 had the ability to:
      • set different scales on each of the 4 channels
      • use the assign CV-in to not only transpose, but to SWITCH BETWEEN SCALE PRESETS!
      Switching between presets would be amazing as I could create chord progressions moving between different qualities of chords. I posted about this on the MW forum in the big 207 thread directing my post to Andre. Not sure, though, if he saw it, cares at all, or even has the ability to update the firmware to make it possible.
      If it were possible, I think it would slay all other quantizers currently on the market. Without that feature, I'm still keeping the module as it offers 4 channels with gates, but that's the only thing that keeps it in my case as opposed to a uScale (which allows for shifting via CV) or the Sonic Potions one (which doesn't have the shift function, but does have a gate-in).

    • @mylespotters
      @mylespotters 8 років тому

      Thanks for the super detailed response!
      Agreed on switching between scale presets. I guess you could do it with your hands on the fly, but that's no different to any of the other modules with keys. As you say, I'm leaning towards uScale because of the shift via CV, such that you can make shifting chord progressions over time. I think if you had the right scale in place on the uScale relative to whatever other elements you have, modular or not, you could get some really interesting chordal associations going on.
      I'm looking to use the uScale (or 207) as a link between a fully expanded Turing mkII and a Rene - and what draws me to the 207 is the four gated channels, which between those two sequence sources would be quite useful, I think.
      At any rate, I do wonder if that scale switch you described is possible. My software programming skills aren't really up to that task yet! Nevertheless, it seems like a pretty heavy lift from a programming perspective, as people would likely come flooding in asking for 4 channels of switching independently from each other, 4 channels of presets...at least I know I would!

    • @fourhexagons
      @fourhexagons  8 років тому

      Ha. Well, I would be satisfied with the preset shift happening globally. That's still a very useful feature!
      My understanding of the uScale shift function is that it's the same as the current implementation of the 207 - that is it's a transposition and not a shift between presets. Do correct me if I'm wrong. Granted, the uScale's implementation of transposition does allow it to be transposed either pre- or post- quantize, so that it's either an in-key diatonic shift, or a full-on transposition. I'm pretty sure that the 207 can't do that.
      And about having CV control to perform the shift (or 'assign' as ADDAC calls it - because you can assign the CV-in to other functions), what I'm looking to do is to achieve the chord progressions programmatically, and not manually. I've already done some 'playing' of the keyboard on the 207 (Money Bunny Dub on my Instagram is an example) and it's just an unnecessary action when you're not looking for variation within the part, and instead to just have it always follow a pattern. Machines are best at playing unchanging patterns ;)

    • @mylespotters
      @mylespotters 8 років тому

      Heh fair enough! And about the uScale, I think you're right too.
      So, I went in to Control yesterday afternoon to ask people smarter than me what they thought on the subject - and their response was more or less as follows: We've had a few of these come through with weird problems that we don't see on other modules, and the manufacturer won't pay to get the items out of customs and so customers haven't even been able to get them fixed.
      That being said, I'd heard that the Verbos Harmonic Oscillator was buggy for some people, and mine came and works like a charm, so YMMV.

    • @fourhexagons
      @fourhexagons  8 років тому

      Stuck in customs - yikes! Well, I don't propose to know the details of how those issues were handled on either side, but I am aware that manufacturers of digital modules can be flooded with requests to fix bricked or otherwise buggy modules when often the case is of user error. And without thorough troubleshooting, it can be difficult to determine the source of the error, user or otherwise.
      Whatever the case, wishing you the best on your choice! And tell Daren I said hi next time you're at Control ;)

  • @NutritionalZero
    @NutritionalZero 7 років тому

    If I'm understanding the signal flow that creates the melodic notes in the midrange arpeggios, that's Ch 4 of Batumi (random) going into the ADDAC207 Ch 3 CV IN. Am I right to understand that it's ADDAC207 that has been given a scale or chord of some kind-to my ears it sounds pentatonic major?-and is matching those notes to the Batumi's random voltages? From the ADDAC207's output into the Elements V/Oct to finally "play" the arpeggio notes via Beast's Chalkboard. If I've mostly understood so far, I'm having a hell of a time figuring out what Beast's Chalkboard is for. It's a "voltage source and adder" according to its webpage, and also says something about "dual octave switcher." Is this somehow taking the ADDAC207's output and telling it to sometimes play notes in a higher register?

    • @NutritionalZero
      @NutritionalZero 7 років тому

      Also my local shop does not carry "ADDAC207." They have a "Tip Top Audio Quantizer." Can I substitute it in?

    • @fourhexagons
      @fourhexagons  7 років тому

      Good ears. Totally pentatonic. Or nearly pentatonic, I should say. The red dots on the quantizer are the notes, so that's C, D, F, G. So, basically a Dm pent without the A. That TipTop Quantizer looks great. I'd say that it's probably the best commercial quantizer available today. I'd definitely recommend it over the ADDAC207. These days I use an Ornament & Crime DIY module for quantization. It's great because it has 4 separate channels that can be set to completely different scales/keys. Look it up and read the Github manual on it to see if it's something you're into. I can connect you with a builder if you're interested. They're very affordable.
      And yeah, Beasts is used to easily switch octaves. It's handy when finding an orchestration that fits. It's way easier to flip a knob to switch the octave/register then to retune the VCO. Beasts is also is a buffered mult which is handy if you need to send the same CV to multiple oscillators (which I'm not doing in this patch). If you use an unbuffered mult for melodic/pitch material, it'll sag and won't stay in tune.
      The only thing you missed about the voices is that the main melodic parts are coming from Tides & the Dixie (melody and bass) which are Channels 2 & 3 of Batumi and 1 & 2 of the quantizer. Elements is the hi-hat sort of part, the first sound you hear, that is triggered by Batumi 1, but pitched by Batumi 4 (or as you put it, telling it to *sometimes* play notes in a higher register). The key is *sometimes*, because Batumi 4 is slower than Batumi 1, so the notes are changing at the slowest rate of all note changes in the piece.
      Lastly, I'll mention that I've moved channels, so if you're not already subscribed to the new channel, head over to ua-cam.com/users/lightbath.

    • @fourhexagons
      @fourhexagons  7 років тому

      Oh, and yeah, a lot of the piece does lean on the major side of things, so F maj pent is probably more accurate.

    • @NutritionalZero
      @NutritionalZero 7 років тому

      Thank you Bryan, this is a huge help to understanding how modular works! I've "migrated" to your new channel now but-what can I say-I often rewatch these older ones because they're just so good. Thanks gain.
