I have some good memories with this game playing connected franchise with my friends. It was nice that they readded the licensed soundtrack too, at least until 2 years later when EA decided having one genre of music was enough forever.

That cinematic was definitely epic at the time, such a neat detail to choose two teams to be in that theoretical Super Bowl to get you ready for the game (should always be skippable after the first time though)
Madden 16 and 17 were the last maddens i bought. Used to get them every year. Draft champions (with no virtual currency needed to play) was fun in 16. In 17 you had to pay virtual currency to play each draft champion game.
You were spot on. Somehow this is nostalgic, and especially playing it recently, I really miss the presentation and hurry-up offense compared to the newer ones. This is exactly how I felt. And yes, the scoreboard is far superior compared to the squish-fest that is the 24 scoreboard
Some changes that really go overlooked that these older madden games had is the ability to start a franchise mode with an actual HOF coach! I built a niners super team with Bill Walsh in madden 15 and am having a ton of fun with it. You also get their playbook which is pretty cool. The newer games have the ability to import old coaches as seen in madden 23 with the John Madden tribute game where there the old & young John Madden on the sideline coaching the AFC & NFC so it just shows how lazy EA is to not include that in franchise mode in the newer games. The second is the realistic height portrayal of players in the game. I have Mike Vick (6’0) as my QB and there is a noticeable size difference between him & the lineman or even Megatron (6’5) in the huddle. When I put Caepernick (6’4) in he is just about the same height as everyone else which really shows you at least they put in effort for some of the smaller things that a lot of people probably wouldn’t notice. It compliments the immersion for me but the newer games since Madden 19 (haven’t played 17 or 18) don’t have this at all. When you notice it it’s really hard to unnotice. I saw someone also mentioned how players wear pink cleats in franchise mode for games during the month of October and the announcers even mention it during the broadcast, something the newer games don’t have. I could list many more features from a game made 8 years ago has that the new games don’t. If you bought the new madden you are a fool
i used to be addicted to madden back in the day 16,18,19,20,21 - I've completely fallen out of love with the franchise and haven't bought a game since.
I watched this last night and was hit by a wave of nostalgia. This was the first game I ever played on my XBOX when we first got it for Christmas. So many memories.
I got this game off Mercari for like $6 and honestly it’s worth $60 compared to what you have today! All the points you made are valid and I agree it’s like playing a Madden that’s from the future. It has a better engine, presentation, and play style. The authenticity, as you mentioned, is something you can feel when you’re playing. It plays like actual football! Crazy how a game that was average at best upon release plays good today compared to what we have. Speaks to how much EA doesn’t care about the actual game beyond making money. Seems to be a theme throughout big franchises in gaming nowadays. Disappointing.
Madden 16-17 and madden 20 caused me more rage than any other madden I’ve played and that’s saying something. All 3 were terrible and in contention for the worst, and that’s coming from somebody who’s played since madden 2000.
I am not gonna lie I put 500 hrs in this game and it’s such mindless fun just taking bad teams to the Super Bowl. Soundtrack was great, it felt fun, and it was just overall enjoyable. Compared to what we have now I look fondly on my good ol madden 16
Imagine playing any madden game after 08. Madden 04-08 was peak content. After that, it quickly became utter trash. In 08, I can relocate a team to Anchorage Alaska, create an entire playbook from scratch - formations, routes, customized blocking sets, audibles and all. Plus it has one of the best rookie classes of all time.
As someone who bought 23 when it went on sale for like 15 bucks I was shook to see the exact same halftime scoreboard with the same animations of players walking by it in 16.
This was the perfect balance and the crossroads when Madden sold out. And Madden only has about 9 games that are actually good! And most of them are before 2010 LOL
I agree. I actually (Unpopular opinion) thought it was the last "Good" (of this generation) Madden. It's felt like a balanced after how d-heavy Madden 15 was and how Cheesy-catch Madden 16 was. I also liked the Practice squad feature that added to the franchise mode and Ignite Engine was solid despite its bugs.
16-17 is what they should’ve kept building on, I put countless hours into both solely because of the gameplay. Even if they had to eventually change the engine it should’ve been something based on the ignite engine’s physics.
It’s interesting how older games can age over time especially when you go back and look back on the simplest details. For sport games, it’s unfortunate that for them especially for Madden, the content is just not growing in progress compared to its earlier stuff. Hey, regardless if you care or not, the videos are great so keep it up softdrink. Keep it up
I always felt nuts for saying that the like 14-18 madden games looked nicer. The new madden characters look uncanny. Like the heads are too big and bodies are too narrow.
Please make a video about how simming to the line of scrimmage ruins games in franchise. Its not a little issue. Its one of the biggest issues for people who play franchise solo. Imagine you are up 13-10 against the cpu wirh 20 seconds left and the clock running after they completed a pass to your 9 yard line. Every team will try to get to the line or scrimmage to see if they can get a play off before they have to kick a field goal. The cpu decides to call a no huddle to hurry to the line...they should make it there easily and if not they can call a timout with a few seconds left so they can try a FG to tie.... In old madden, where there were actual animations for no huddle and hurry up the player/cpu can rush to the line and call a timeout at ANY TIME if they are cutting it close and need to go for the tie instead of the win. Fast forward to recent madden where they will automatically fast forward the play clock 20 seconds after a no huddle play is called. that leaves the game at 0 without the cpu being able to call a timeout to attempt a field goal. Its broken its busted, its downright rotten to the core. I have called timeouts for the CPU before because just how unfair it is. It is extremely broken. One of the worst issues madden 25 has gameplay wise. Im in week 10 of my franchise and have called 3 timeouts for the opposite cpu teams so far just because its a broken game mechanic. I hate having to baby sit the cpu because madden took something vital out of the game and didn't correct the issues it caused.
I remember having fun online. If I remember correctly this was one of the years that Pistol Trips Nub with Buck Sweep was so OP. Used to put the most dynamic Oline at Guard to pancake everyone on the pulls
I remember hating this game because all you had to do was bomb it downfield and your guy would catch it with one hand. Every body including the db’s were catching the ball OBJ style.15 was better but it had the swerve.
Well, I would say the difference with that is that NBA 2k16 is actually among their all time greats. There are some past titles that outshine it a bit. But 2k16 got some things perfect Madden 2016, though not an all time great, is at least enjoyable.
This was my game growing up, nobody really talks about it anymore so I'm glad to see this. Obviously my opinion is clouded by nostalgia but I thought it was pretty good
When madden 16 was released, I was going into 8th grade. Now I am 21 and about to graduate with my B.S in engineering. The fact that a game that came out while I was in middle school is significantly better than a game that released when I am a grown man is an ablsoliute joke and proves EA deservers to rot in the gutter
Draft champs mentioned!! One of my favorite game modes of all time.. nothing hit quite like draft champs as far as assembling a squad with the boys and passing the controller as you play someone online.. until the first couple maddens with superstar KO then going on streaks wtb was always a good time
Madden 16 had OP af aggs But also had turbo blitzes and a b c gaps The last mut before competitive madden took over You could argue this is the last FUN madden But most importantly the LAST madden BEFORE DDA
I remember this era was really when the "Save $65" talk kicked in which obviously didn't do much but it's crazy to sit back now, and we look at games 25, 16, or for me personally 17 with a degree of fondness and nostalgia. The Physics were better, The Graphics were better, The Presentation was better, Gameplay felt more fun in 16 and 17. I felt like I could trust my great players to make great plays. If I had a all-star corner (I'm a Jags fan and this was that Jalen Ramsey era) I'd leave him 1 on 1 with almost any receiver in the game and feel confident that he'd shut them down. I didn't need a "Superstar" or "X-Factor Ability", he just played up to his ratings.
A few years into franchise mode when many teams have drafted new quarterbacks, the stock images of the players are usually the same. It’s soooooo bad when the game Intro shows the same picture for players on 2 different team. Great example of lack of care/polish.
If there is one thing I loved about Madden 16 is the pre game presentation it wasnt great but seeing the irl videos of quarterbacks as they took the field with their stats as well as coaches win-loss records.
That’s my favorite Madden fr. The physics are great & you can make edits during franchise mode. If 15-17 had the attention to detail that 11 & 12 had, they’d probably be the best Maddens so far.
EA is running their presentation in games like madden and fifa just so online players can get through the game faster, it’s ridiculous, people play sports games offline too
I had Madden 10, 11 and 12 on the Wii, and they were indeed very different from the PS3 and 360 versions. Madden 10 was basically PS2/Gamecube/OG Xbox Madden minus a few features like create a team, while 11 and 12 were their own things entirely. When Madden on the Wii from the late 2000s/early 2010s is better than Madden on the PS5 and Series X/S in 2023, you know something has gone terribly, terribly wrong.
This was my all time favorite madden for two reasons. This was prime Tony Romo for the cowboys 🤘🏻 and this was the last madden that me and my friends played together in person almost every single day. I hate growing up smh
Dude, you can't care too much about something you love. You love football games and because you saw them at their peak you hate the current state of them, nothing wrong with that. Who cares if someone else doesn't get it, it's important to you. And for the record I'm the same way with character action games, I live in constant fear that the atrocious God of War reboot will influence the future of the subgenre.
@@SOFTDRINKTV Short version, the zoomed in camera creates issues that the traditional GoW camera didn't have. The game is a slog due to the single shot camera. The gameplay is subservient to the honestly severely overrated story (And I want to be clear that the story is fine, just not anything special and certainly not the peak of the medium. That'd be the PS1 JRPG Xenogears in my opinion). The RPG elements are tacked on without thought, though that's an industry issue these days. The insane sense of scale that the old GoW games had has been completely removed. I can go on and would be happy to dig into my reasoning if you're still curious, but those are my main issues. @@shawklan27 the newer ones I usually don't mind and have a couple songs I can find that I like (Madden 19 had a couple songs I still go to regularly), but granted a lot of that is just because I'm genuinely into that kind of sound, it can def get repetitive and I see why a lot of people don't like the newer soundtracks at all lol
I’ll never forget how toxic Madden 16 Ultimate Team was. Playing man coverage was like an automatic 50 yard bomb
I love getting that broadcast angle where it looks like you’re watching the game on the TV. Literally so much fun.
You know it’s a good day when soft drinks drops
That cinematic was definitely epic at the time, such a neat detail to choose two teams to be in that theoretical Super Bowl to get you ready for the game (should always be skippable after the first time though)
Anytime EA adds a "New Feature " it adds 5 new game breaking bugs or dumbs down another aspect of the game.
That, or it's an old feature that they removed so they could bring it back in 4 years as a "new feature"
Trash company.
Yup by design! They only see $$$

Madden 16 and 17 were the last maddens i bought. Used to get them every year. Draft champions (with no virtual currency needed to play) was fun in 16. In 17 you had to pay virtual currency to play each draft champion game.
0:25 that transition was so smooth
You were spot on. Somehow this is nostalgic, and especially playing it recently, I really miss the presentation and hurry-up offense compared to the newer ones. This is exactly how I felt. And yes, the scoreboard is far superior compared to the squish-fest that is the 24 scoreboard
I always go back to play it. The lighting and the crowd is way better. The color on the jersey’s are perfect.
It took so long for Madden to adapt to Frostbite engine that at this point the engine is so damn old it doesn't even worth keep develop on it lmao
I might just have to redownload Madden 16, still been playing 03-08 on PS2, as well as Backbreaker and APF2K8...never stop with these videos man

YO IT BUGS ME SO MUCH HOW GENERIC AND SMALL THE 24 ONE LOOKS FR
IF ITS GONNA BE THAT SMALL PUT IT IN THE CORNER LIKE THE OLD FOX ONE
i used to be addicted to madden back in the day 16,18,19,20,21 - I've completely fallen out of love with the franchise and haven't bought a game since.
I watched this last night and was hit by a wave of nostalgia. This was the first game I ever played on my XBOX when we first got it for Christmas. So many memories.
That moment when mid 2010's Madden was more fun than modern Madden.
Madden 16 is the last Madden game I remember playing that didn't feel like it was being slowed down.
Madden 16 has my personal favorite scoreboard of all time
As someone who bought 23 when it went on sale for like 15 bucks I was shook to see the exact same halftime scoreboard with the same animations of players walking by it in 16.
You're the reason I bought 2K5. I hope you're the reason several others buy it as well.
This was the perfect balance and the crossroads when Madden sold out. And Madden only has about 9 games that are actually good! And most of them are before 2010 LOL
as a St. Lunatic I still keep 16 alive because it was the last year of the rams being in STL, many a franchise have been completed even in 2023.
Would be interested on your thoughts on 17 since it was the last actual game on the Ignite Engine.
Nostalgia over a mid 2010s madden game is pretty crazy. Just shows how bad Madden has become
Like the heads are too big and bodies are too narrow.
the presentation felt like actual football
Aggressive catches were insane in this game there was not point of doing run plays.
Thanks for putting in the work, and saving us loads us money .
Madden 16 is the one where I discovered the titans empty base set and I’ve ran the same play book ever since it literally never changed
Madden 17 was the greatest of the last maddens.
Frostbite being used for ea sports games was and remains mad. The devs apparently have a way harder time using it than they did with other engines
You could make similar arguments with 2k16 vs 2k24 😔
Well, I would say the difference with that is that NBA 2k16 is actually among their all time greats. There are some past titles that outshine it a bit. But 2k16 got some things perfect
Madden 2016, though not an all time great, is at least enjoyable.
This was my game growing up, nobody really talks about it anymore so I'm glad to see this. Obviously my opinion is clouded by nostalgia but I thought it was pretty good
3:52 Skip the sponsor 😅
14:15 the sound track in 16 was awesome . honestly madden 16 17 and 18 all had banger sound tracks, I have them all saved on a playlist
Madden 16 wasn't that great tbh
It is pretty good when you realize there have been 39 of these and the is easily better than over half of them for me certainly in the top 10.
Draft champs mentioned!! One of my favorite game modes of all time.. nothing hit quite like draft champs as far as assembling a squad with the boys and passing the controller as you play someone online.. until the first couple maddens with superstar KO then going on streaks wtb was always a good time
Madden 16 had OP af aggs
But also had turbo blitzes and a b c gaps
The last mut before competitive madden took over
You could argue this is the last FUN madden
But most importantly the LAST madden BEFORE DDA
Madden 16 was my first Madden I ever played with. Remember coming home from middle school and playing Madden 16 like crazy...
Madden 16 is somehow almost a decade old💀
I remember this era was really when the "Save $65" talk kicked in which obviously didn't do much but it's crazy to sit back now, and we look at games 25, 16, or for me personally 17 with a degree of fondness and nostalgia.
Madden 16 gameplay really had potential I believe it should of been the direction they went.
And 17 also
A few years into franchise mode when many teams have drafted new quarterbacks, the stock images of the players are usually the same. It’s soooooo bad when the game Intro shows the same picture for players on 2 different team. Great example of lack of care/polish.
Please do a vid about madden 17 please
If there is one thing I loved about Madden 16 is the pre game presentation it wasnt great but seeing the irl videos of quarterbacks as they took the field with their stats as well as coaches win-loss records.

Ngl, the ignite engine had some GREAT physics! Between this and ufc 2 it wasn’t too bad
Nobody ever talks about Madden 17
That’s my favorite Madden fr. The physics are great & you can make edits during franchise mode. If 15-17 had the attention to detail that 11 & 12 had, they’d probably be the best Maddens so far.
EA is running their presentation in games like madden and fifa just so online players can get through the game faster, it’s ridiculous, people play sports games offline too
Do a Madden 13 for Wii video. Apparently it’s different from the PS3 and Xbox 360.
A Madden Wii retrospective would be nice.
I remember playing a ton of Madden 16 freshman year on my roommate's Xbox, then playing just as much the following year on 17 when I got my own
IMO this was the start of maddens decent. The aggressive catch was way to OP.
I’ve only heard good things about the new God of War games. What is your issue with them out of curiosity?
TL;DR, It's the PS2 game God Hand if God Hand didn't understand what it was. Go emulate that game if you want a truly unique experience... Or Xenogears. Either one is good.
Genuinely one of the worst takes I’ve heard.(correct me if I’m wrong)but I think you’re just mad that you don’t have a PS5
@@Hordekiller793 Nah, it's just a bad game like I said above. I also have no interest in a console that has one interesting exclusive (FFXVI) that's coming to PC in a few months anyway. Wake me up when they announce Gravity Rush 3 and Jak 4 with no influence from Druckmann whatsoever (never happening).
@@nopenope2550 okay I respect your opinion but Since you don’t like gow I recommend red dead redemption it’s on pc
I wish Madden 13, Madden 25, Madden 15 and 16 were remastered. I miss the old games.
R. Kelly had a whole video tape out for 20 years before the law came for him. I ain't seen no Diddy tapes.
This was the last Madden I purchased and put time into. The online power run was wild
I live the ragdoll type of movement its way better than seeing the same animations every drive
That swerve catch spam used to be insane as a giants fan
This was my first madden and looking back on it I really don’t know how to feel about it. It was a blast growing up but looking back it was just a weird game.
