I’m 56 and have been vegan for the animals for almost 3 years. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Loosing weight and keeping it off has been surprisingly easy. Thanks for this great video.
Awesome, Stacy! I am an earth scientist by background and we love animals, so I am so relieved that what's best for the planet, the animals, and pandemics, is also best for human health. I don't know what we would have done if the best for human health is the carnivore diet.

@@delaslight Hi, a year after my first comment and I’m still happily and healthfully vegan. I make sure that I eat plenty of plant protein like nuts and beans and whole grains. I focus on why I’m vegan (for the animals) instead of on food and it’s working out very well for me. Intermittent fasting has also helped me to stay at a healthy weight. Keep researching and watching good videos and be patient with your body when you’re trying new ways of eating. Focus on the peace you feel when you’re not contributing to the suffering of animals 💚
@@delaslight sorry first if it takes me long but i think it's worth to share my story so you and other people that could be interest can learn something about it. You can get huge amounts of protein with other foods that are not meat. For example, tofu, seitan, tempeh, concentrated soy protein, meat substitutes made with pea and soy protein ( all this foods have insane amounts of protein inside them )and mix them with your favourite vegetables and cereals like quinua, integral rice, couscous and beans like lentils, chickpeas,etc. I had the same problem as you for a long time, and it SUCKED. The thing is that you are probably addicted to white flour refined products like the bread and the normal pasta, and probably you used to mix them with meat too. So basically your mind goes: ok I go vegan but i still eat big amounts of rice and pasta and bread to fill me up. You start gaining wait because obviously are eating 3 or 4 times the portion that you would really need. For example, i used to eat 150 -200 gr. of pasta instead of 80, so make the numbers... At the end of the day, you are probably putting on you 1000 or 1500 calories more than you would need, and that leads to a weight gain. After feeling frustrated for the weight gain, you go back to eat meat to fill but you still eating this extreeeeeeeeeeeemely unhealthy refined white rice, pasta and white bread. This are as dangerous and addicted as sugar or more. And further mure, you keep harming the planet and the poor animals eating meat. And surprise... YOU STILL GAINING WEIGHT! The BEST decision I made was going to a vegan nutritionist that could guide me and another important thing for your mental and physical health is to work out consistently. I can give you an example of what i eat in a day ( I work out 2 hours for 5 days a week but you could aply it just consuming a bit less protein ): - Morning: 300 ml Soy Milk + 20g of Isolated soy protein of the flavour you prefer + 50 g of nuts like cashews, peanuts, etc. This already has 40 g of protein!! -Lunch: 30 g of raw spinach + 2 slices of grilled tofu One big sweet potato + 4 slices of tofu + your favourite vegetables ( EVERYTHING TO THE OVEN) 1 ORANGE ( the citrus helps absorb the iron of green raw vegetables) We have 35 g more of protein! Dinner: 200g grilled broccoli + Vegan burger 36 gr. of protein TOTAL PROTEIN INTAKE: 118 gr. of protein!!! And i really promise you that with this kind of diet you will not crave at ALL. The bad thing is that it will be extremely difficult to resist the temptation of eating badly, but its just the first days. I do eat rice, pasta and bread 1 or 2 times a week, but make sure they are integral or made with another food that is not just wheat. For example, lentils pasta. I know exactly how difficult it is to convince your own father of a healthy diet. Mine is 50 and overweight, but he just won't change. Well, you can't force people to take care of themselves...
Keto helped me lose the last bit of weight I wanted to lose . I found it unsustainable because I never filled up and I started craving carbs which satisfied the hunger.
That's why I couldn't do keto also; every time I had carbs, even the vegetable carbs, like potatoes or carrots, I will start craving more, and I was always hungry on the keto diet. So I went one step further, and I am now 90 days on the carnivore and I haven't been hungry once and I've lost way more weight than I could've ever done on the keto diet.
Wonderfully crafted video and simple to follow. Takeaways: don’t bother with branded diets, instead focus on principles. Eat more fruits, veggies, nuts and legumes. Eliminate or reduce processed foods, meats and dairy. I’m in!
@@bartkuk1 not all nuts are super imbalanced when it comes to omega 6 vs omega 3 however I would agree to being careful when it comes to overcoming nuts and some seeds. Plus the are calorie dense and when eating shelled nuts and seeds it’s quite easy to eat 500 or more calories in just a few minutes.

My 50yr old geologist brother in law stayed with me for 3 days.On Friday he ate 6 Lamb cutlets at lunchtime.On Saturday he ate half a BBQ chicken.On Sunday he ate a large T bone steak at lunchtime.As my house guest I was stunned he ate Nothing else except what I have written." Everything the human body needs it can get from meat and I have not eaten any fruit or vegetables in over a year".Yep at age 50 he looks and moves like a 80yr old.Totally nuts yet he believes in his approach.

But you do realize that he is also saying that Carbs are not good in excess right? And sugar is poison for many, especially those with pre diabetes or type 2 diabetes. And also keto does strongly encourage vegs from above the ground. But not root vegs as they have too much carbs.

I read ninas book and fell for it. There was so many references that I thought she couldn’t possibly be wrong! I did keto for around a year, I didn’t lose the weight I was hoping for but I feel it did help get my blood sugar better. Then luckily in 2020 we watched both seaspiracy and game changers and luckily for my my husband hopped on board. We’ve been mostly plant based since. The rest of the family still eats a little dairy, and now I can’t even bring myself to cook with meat. I feel great, though my iron is low (I was a regular blood donor 4x year) I’ve had to stop. But I’m truly grateful to have found a sustainable, ethical and environment friendly way to eat.

I just found your channel and plan to watch every video. For about twenty years now I have tended towards WFPB. Now retired, I started doing volunteer trail maintenance and found that I needed more energy during work days. So, I reverted for a while back to what you would call the working mans diet of my youth. I no longer do the trail work, but still worry that most of the plant based cooking channels seem a bit "light". Also, be it plant based or Keto, very few talk about what it costs to buy the food. Of course beans cost less than steak. Thanks for all that you do.
Yeah, this. I thought keto was the health pathway after seeing 100lbs of success, but nevertheless I was seemingly wrong. I had always been cost effective and never letting any food spoil, but lentils, beans, and so on would be a while lot cheaper.
How fascinating to see diets come and go but the Seventh Day Adventists have never wavered and they top the charts as the world's longest lived people in just about every country, including Japan.
@@Ash12428 they are actually correct. Hong Kong has longest life expectancy in the world. Also, California Mormons seem to have the same degree of longevity as SDA. And they consume meat. The concept of these Blue Zones is hogwash for the most part. Those data are cherry picked for the most part to push certain narratives. The data are fraught with healthy and unhealthy user bias. Bottom line though, eat what makes you feel good in the setting of HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES. Whether you eat plant based vs animal, the issue is staying away from processed pseudo foods, making sure you exercise, don’t smoke, don’t drink, get some sun, engage socially, etc.
Fantastic tour of the latest nutritional trends and the science/rationale behind them, treated in a non-threatening manner. I've read many of the same books and appreciate references for the new ones. Contrary to the all-too-common public response of "I don't know what to think" the science is clear! I was listening to a debate between Paul Saladino (Carnivore diet doc) and Chris Kresser (Paleo diet book author) and was struck by how much they rely on anecdotes about understudied populations, like the Inuit. Neither are scientists, there was no mention of the big, disciplined studies done by respected scientists, like the Adventist 2 study, the Blue Zones, the China Study, etc. Lots of speculation about ancestral diets that archaeologists dispute, etc. There's a parallel universe of scientists who study the microbiome and they make it totally clear: good gut microbes thrive on plants, bad ones on red meat and eggs. It's crystal-clear science.
@@Viva-Longevity Speaking of gut microbiome....a few years back I had a long commute and filled the time listening to TED talks and went down the rabbit hole of gut biome and how it is the second brain and affects mood and so many other things. When I heard it could affect allergies I had an 'aha' moment for myself. We were newly WFPB at the time so after reading from places like Dr. Greger's How Not to Die (thanks for that recommendation) and reviewing The China Study (I'd had a copy for for years) I decided to get as much variety in my WFPB diet to see if it could improve my severe food allergies. So severe that I spent $10,000 or so the previous years in ambulance rides thanks to anaphylactic episodes - and one was from just being in the room with the offending food! After 2 years of this 'as much plant variety' as possible it came time to get my allergies tested again. The tests came back completely NEGATIVE. The dr was so shocked that he said the tests had to be wrong and tested me again at his own expense. It came came back NEGATIVE again and I started eating all the foods again with no issues. Just an anecdote, I know, but I'm 100000% sold on variety being a plus on a WFPB diet. Thanks for all the work you do and bless your wife for 'allowing' you to nurture your curiousity and share that with the world. You are appreciated. P.S. Great stuff, thank you so much. I am a recovering paleo/primal dieter and even earned a Primal Health Coach certification a few years ago. Slowly I began to ask myself whether or not what I was doing, such as always skipping breakfast and eating a LOT of animal products, was actually benefitting me. The answer is no. I've never been much for processed food or sugar so that wasn't an issue, but the paleo/primal approach was simply not working. I'm now on day 6 of a mostly vegan approach and am regularly consuming your content, so to speak, for knowledge and motivation. Thanks for your incredibly well-researched videos.
The LDL levels on Paleo is super dangerous. You don't need to go to the opposite extreme of vegan. Vegetarians and Mediterranean diet are healthiest no need for supplements.
Do you have any interest in the people who are telling the opposite story? That being the people who have given up on the vegan diet for one reason or another?
@@XrayTheMyth23 You might be less than well-informed on the subject because even most dedicated vegans have accepted that it's next to impossible to get everything your body needs from a 100% vegan diet without certain supplements.

I'm watching your old videos after recently discovered you. And it's great! Simple explanations, to the point and the production value you're known for. BUT I have to be nitpicking because there is a thing greatly bothering me. 11:48 But we are! I hate when people say this! And you as someone with scientific background who is extremely well read should know. we are human like monkeys along with our closest cousins, then African great apes subfamily, then great apes family, then simians or higher primates a.k.a. anthropoids or simiiformes infraorder, in the order of simple/dry-nosed primates/monkeys, of three primates order. To avoid scientific names. We are no more not monkeys as we are not mammals or vertebrates or animals or living earthlings. I know you know this very well and you told us as what an average viewer thought but I had to rant because I hate so much when people say that.

Again - AWESOME work! It really helped when you showed what to eat from the grocery store. (The bread episode) I hope to see more of that. But, the coconut oil and butter lesson was invaluable. I've been trying for years to learn how to eat right. There is so much bad information out there. The promise of eating what you love and the promise that it's good for you is pretty irresistible. ; ) I'm 57 years old. I don't have a whole lot of time to figure this out. I'm retired now which makes it possible to give it my all. My mom passed at 59 from a fatal heart attack. My oldest sister passed at 60 years old from a subdural hematoma after the nursing aide in the nursing home she had been living in for four years (after she had a stroke that left her bed bound at 56 years old) dropped her on her head while transferring her back to her bed. My oldest brother passed at 59 years old from a fatal heart attack that was brought on by damage from his chemo treatments for breast cancer. My dad passed away at 72 from complications of Alzheimers. (Basically, he starved to death from the negative effects of the medicine he was on which stole anything resembling an appetite from him. He was nothing but bones when he passed.) There are eight children left. (Ages 52-63) Two of the eight are considered pretty healthy. The rest of us are a mess. Two of them have brain tumors. One of them has had RA (arthritis) since she was a teenager. One of them is 400 pounds. We definitely didn't win in the gene pool lottery. I'm hoping I can change my stars. And, in closing..... Today is my one month anniversary of NOT smoking!! Four weeks!! I never thought it was possible. Ironically, both parents were heavy smokers, but I'm the only one out of 11 kids who chose to smoke. At least there's that. lol

Should be nothing. I've been told that frozen fruit is "fresher" than fruit in the produce section. I eat frozen pineapple and wild blueberries pretty regularly.
Love the video. One thought, isn't a bit extreme to set up "Keto or Vegan" as the only options? COuldn't a mostly vegetarian diet with OCCASIONAL meat (like special parties with friends once a week) be the best, because there are occasional rewards, not just constant vigilance against "unhealthy" food? As food neurosis can also be unhealthy. Enjoying life has huge benefits, yes?
The video was framed as vegan vs. keto because these diets are often seen as opposites within the broader dieting community. Keto influencers often advocate for a high-fat diet (often heavy in animal products) while vegan influencers and doctors often advocate for a diet high in carbohydrates from plants. By no means are these the only 2 options. From my point of view, having a 100% whole-food, plant-based diet is the best diet for optimal health, so if you're not concerned with optimal health and want to indulge in some occasional meat, it probably won't be too harmful.
Love all the research that went into this video. I had the same issue with The China Study, I was reading all the studies and even those had me looking up terms I've never heard.
Thanks! That's the thing about The China Study I wonder about every time I recommend it: it's pretty scientific. Originally, the publisher thought it would only sell 3,000 copies because of that - and the fact that it didn't contain recipes. It's heartening that it has sold more than 3,000,000 copies so far, but I always worry about the readability of it.

Mostly poultry, fish, veggies, fruit. Love my Yasso frozen yogurt bars. Don't do coconut oil, dont like following fads! Like the science in your videos👍
Like you I’m a scientist (8 years of tertiary education). I like facts and data and I use them to guide my decisions. There are always exceptions in any dietary regime. Clearly some people do well on a high fibre plant based diet. I find it unsatisfying and I can’t eat large amounts of carbohydrates because I’m metabolically impaired. Keto works for me. Being honest it’s the only thing that’s ever consistently worked for me. My blood work is good; my triglycerides and my cholesterol ratios all drastically improved. My weight has stabilised back at my high school weight. I do eat fibrous vegetables plentifully as my only source of carbohydrates. I don’t feel poorly nourished. For me it works. Keep putting out thought provoking videos. They’re very enjoyable.
I’ve been following the advice of Dr Caldwell Esselstyne for the past 3 years and I no longer suffer from Angina, plus I’ve lost weight without even trying! Whole Food Plant Based lifestyle is definitely for me 👍
The big problem with the monkey artery hypothesis is that Monkeys don't eat those foods in nature so obviously it is going to produce systematic stress to give them foods that they are not accustomed to, and so it supports the stress model of atherosclerosis.

@@kj_H65f No longitudinal experiment has shown reduced all cause mortality from vegan diets versus omnivorous diets when calories were standardized. There is some evidence that omnivore diets raise the likelihood of overeating. The recent Stanford twin experiment actually shows that when calories are controlled for there is NO difference. The Vegan diet twins ate about 200 fewer calories per day than the omnivorous twins and the health hazards reduction matching what would be expected from a 200 calorie reduction independent of food choices.
That was hard. I rented a couple of teleprompters and was stiff when I read from them. Eventually I settled on writing a script but trying to repeat it verbatim also made me stiff. So I just looked at a few lines of the script, then ad libbed a few takes until I felt okay about it and just cut them together UA-cam-style, with jump cuts. I was relieved that people thought it worked.

I just cannot understand why there are not hundreds of thousands or millions of people watching you - well of course except the unpopularity of the truth that you need to eat healthy food to be healthy.
I think which diet works best is the one that works for you. I eat far more veg and fibre that most on a ketogenic diet. In addition I drink kefir and eat sauerkraut and kimchi almost daily. Yet I’m on a ketogenic diet. I don’t beat UPF whatsoever and stick to real food. I don’t eat fruit other than berries very infrequently. I limit myself to 20g of carbs a day. I’m never hungry and have no cravings. I eat a square of 99% chocolate per day. I drink coffee before midday but not until I’ve been away for 2 hours. I stay well hydrated and eat whatever else I want but in moderation since I’m never hungry. I’ve lost 15% of my body weight and have another 30 kg to go to reach my ideal weight. I’ve reversed my type 2 diabetes. Stopped all my meds apart from metformin. My by ranges from. 96/65 to 110/70. My resting heart rate has dropped to 55/ min sinus rhythm. I cycle 2-3 times per week and have just started with light weights with a plan to increase over the next 6-12 months. I’m in my 60s. My lipid profile has improved on keto and my waist circumference is down 8-9 inches. New temporary wardrobe. My friends all say I look younger. I feel it too. I tried low fat plant based diets but couldn’t stick to them and even gained weight from the amount of fruit that I was eating. I’ve put my trust in Dr Eric Westman Sarah Halberg Prof Roy Taylor Will I switch to a Mediterranean diet in 12 month….. perhaps. The big game changer for me was a cGM (continuous glucose monitor). I see no spike now. To be honest. This diet works for me and I say eat real food and do whatever works for you. We all need to help start the demise of UPF. UPF IS NOT REAL FOOD it’s poison and just immoral profiteering by the food industry.
As a little grasshopper (me) gazing up at a scientific guru (you) I've distilled your years of extreme research to (1) generally the Mediterranean diet seems best (2) reasonable exercise helps (3) interspersed fasting contributes (4) meditation adds as well. How about doing a segment on why people lose weight on every "diet" ever published across the macro spectrum? Maybe it has more to do with being and maintaining a calorie deficit - a topic I haven't heard you mention once. I'm sure Mark Died on would chime in on that as well, not to mention HRT (why he looks like he does). I was heartened to hear you finally acknowledge modified keto, which is essentially LCHF - not tied to the 20 gm carb restriction of keto, and one rich in quality, unprocessed vegetables and low glycemic fruits.

Think about it. Monkeys are animals that eat vegetables, fruits, and insects. Giving them Large amounts of meat...of course it's going to play havoc on his system. The same with birds, and other animals they tested that don't eat anything normally except insects! The reports here are ridiculous.

I took a look at US News rankings of diets, and though the various diets do jockey around for position over the years, the Mediterranean diet generally lands in the top three. Is there any chance that you can do a video on the intersection between the muscle-bound, low-carb/keto/carnivore/high protein approaches and longevity-mortality? Sure, plenty of "Body-builders gone too soon" videos exist on youtube, and I see you have done a couple of videos on the lifespans of diet gurus (great videos, BTW), but to date, I haven't seen anyone do a deep dive on this (though I am aware of a few epidemiological studies on this over the years). Chris! Love you man. Great gems. Amazing how honing in on nutrition can radically improve all aspects of our well being. Thanks for sharing some of the "fruits" of your journey. Garrett and I have been using calorie/macros tracking apps to hit goals in 2020 and its helped me get way more conscious about food choices and further driven home the value of eating whole foods. Down 30 pounds since January 1! But I've been trying to save my muscle and getting enough protein is the hardest part of hitting my macros. Fat and carbs are never a problem. How do you get enough protein eating vegan? Do I really need 175g of protein? Would love to pick your brain next time I see you.
Hey Ryan! Major respect for losing 30 pounds!! Not many people can do that and keep it off, but I lost 43 twenty years ago and generally keep 38 of them off without having to think too hard about it. Getting enough protein is the #1 question people ask about going plant-based and I plan a whole episode on that, after the one I'm working on now about tricks the food companies play, and the next one on your fascinating poop and what it's telling you. Until then, have you watched Game Changers? Fantastic. Honestly, the food companies are so genius at marketing, they got all of us worried about protein even though all plants have complete protein, and plenty of it. It's where the animals get theirs from, and we get it from them somewhat used and oxidized in quantities that can be toxic. I know, that sounds like I'm out there, but I promise the episode will be sane. It sounded like I was out there about coconut oil too before this episode, no? The thing to worry about is fiber. Our guts depend on a wide variety of fiber, in other words, a wide variety of plants.
I went vegan 5 yrs ago & get most of my protein from beans (lentils have the highest amounts). I love having a bowl of rice & beans topped w/ salsa & a touch of avocado. Since going vegan, my protein & calcium levels have been great (even slightly improved relative to my omnivore days). Have to say I have been surprised the protein question hasn’t been an issue at all (BTW my high cholesterol dropped to normal levels & my blood sugar as well, no meds). Couldn’t be more thankful.
What about fat without all the sugar? Sugar causes inflammation in the arteries that has fat become plaque. But without all the sugar my inflammation in my body has just left me. I feel great everyday which is odd as I do BJJ and am sore normally and stiff.
My take is that you’re non-committal… I guess you’re trying to show pros & cons of both lifestyles? I’ll figure it out! 😃 I do love your dry humor & witty explanations! 😊 I’ll be back for more commentary! Thx!
What does science say about the following: Collagen and or Bone Broth, Fish oil, Fatty fish, organ meat, especially liver, avocado oil. What about tomato skin? I saw some anti lectin doctor claiming that tomato skins were the worst thing you could possibly eat.
Why are portion sizes not an issue but instead it is what you eat? I walk into say Panda Express and order a plate and the amount given is consumed as lunch for some. That amount I could consume as lunch and half my dinner. Is not the bigger issue the portion size? Speaking as a casual observer not a scientist and trying to understand why portion size is not the first issue to deal with, which intuitively I think it should before we get into the details of the diet. The normal servings given in the USA I feel is a lot.
I have watched most of the 'healthy food' channels and love several - Greger, Barnard, Campbell and others, and I really like this one. I appreciate your deep dives on the science and research, and independent conclusions. I lost 80 lbs. in a year on a whole foods plant based diet (plus walking), and feel 30 years younger. Is it healthy? Who knows, but it worked for me.
I’m 56 and have been vegan for the animals for almost 3 years. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Loosing weight and keeping it off has been surprisingly easy. Thanks for this great video.
Awesome, Stacy! I am an earth scientist by background and we love animals, so I am so relieved that what's best for the planet, the animals, and pandemics, is also best for human health. I don't know what we would have done if the best for human health is the carnivore diet.

@@delaslight Hi, a year after my first comment and I’m still happily and healthfully vegan. I make sure that I eat plenty of plant protein like nuts and beans and whole grains. I focus on why I’m vegan (for the animals) instead of on food and it’s working out very well for me. Intermittent fasting has also helped me to stay at a healthy weight. Keep researching and watching good videos and be patient with your body when you’re trying new ways of eating. Focus on the peace you feel when you’re not contributing to the suffering of animals 💚
@@delaslight sorry first if it takes me long but i think it's worth to share my story so you and other people that could be interest can learn something about it.
You can get huge amounts of protein with other foods that are not meat. For example, tofu, seitan, tempeh, concentrated soy protein, meat substitutes made with pea and soy protein ( all this foods have insane amounts of protein inside them )and mix them with your favourite vegetables and cereals like quinua, integral rice, couscous and beans like lentils, chickpeas,etc. I had the same problem as you for a long time, and it SUCKED. The thing is that you are probably addicted to white flour refined products like the bread and the normal pasta, and probably you used to mix them with meat too.
So basically your mind goes: ok I go vegan but i still eat big amounts of rice and pasta and bread to fill me up. You start gaining wait because obviously are eating 3 or 4 times the portion that you would really need. For example, i used to eat 150 -200 gr. of pasta instead of 80, so make the numbers... At the end of the day, you are probably putting on you 1000 or 1500 calories more than you would need, and that leads to a weight gain.
After feeling frustrated for the weight gain, you go back to eat meat to fill but you still eating this extreeeeeeeeeeeemely unhealthy refined white rice, pasta and white bread. This are as dangerous and addicted as sugar or more. And further mure, you keep harming the planet and the poor animals eating meat. And surprise... YOU STILL GAINING WEIGHT!
The BEST decision I made was going to a vegan nutritionist that could guide me and another important thing for your mental and physical health is to work out consistently.
I can give you an example of what i eat in a day ( I work out 2 hours for 5 days a week but you could aply it just consuming a bit less protein ):
- Morning: 300 ml Soy Milk + 20g of Isolated soy protein of the flavour you prefer + 50 g of nuts like cashews, peanuts, etc.
This already has 40 g of protein!!
-Lunch: 30 g of raw spinach + 2 slices of grilled tofu
One big sweet potato + 4 slices of tofu + your favourite vegetables ( EVERYTHING TO THE OVEN)
1 ORANGE ( the citrus helps absorb the iron of green raw vegetables)
We have 35 g more of protein!
Dinner: 200g grilled broccoli + Vegan burger
36 gr. of protein
TOTAL PROTEIN INTAKE: 118 gr. of protein!!!
And i really promise you that with this kind of diet you will not crave at ALL. The bad thing is that it will be extremely difficult to resist the temptation of eating badly, but its just the first days. I do eat rice, pasta and bread 1 or 2 times a week, but make sure they are integral or made with another food that is not just wheat. For example, lentils pasta.

The first video on this channel already had a tremendously high quality and is incredibly entertaining, great! Very interesting to be between two very opposing views of nutrition. I know exactly how difficult it is to convince your own father of a healthy diet. Mine is 50 and overweight, but he just won't change. Well, you can't force people to take care of themselves...
Keto helped me lose the last bit of weight I wanted to lose . I found it unsustainable because I never filled up and I started craving carbs which satisfied the hunger.
That's why I couldn't do keto also; every time I had carbs, even the vegetable carbs, like potatoes or carrots, I will start craving more, and I was always hungry on the keto diet. So I went one step further, and I am now 90 days on the carnivore and I haven't been hungry once and I've lost way more weight than I could've ever done on the keto diet.

@@bartkuk1 not all nuts are super imbalanced when it comes to omega 6 vs omega 3 however I would agree to being careful when it comes to overcoming nuts and some seeds. Plus the are calorie dense and when eating shelled nuts and seeds it’s quite easy to eat 500 or more calories in just a few minutes.

My 50yr old geologist brother in law stayed with me for 3 days.On Friday he ate 6 Lamb cutlets at lunchtime.On Saturday he ate half a BBQ chicken.On Sunday he ate a large T bone steak at lunchtime.As my house guest I was stunned he ate Nothing else except what I have written." Everything the human body needs it can get from meat and I have not eaten any fruit or vegetables in over a year".Yep at age 50 he looks and moves like a 80yr old.Totally nuts yet he believes in his approach.

But you do realize that he is also saying that Carbs are not good in excess right? And sugar is poison for many, especially those with pre diabetes or type 2 diabetes. And also keto does strongly encourage vegs from above the ground. But not root vegs as they have too much carbs.

I read ninas book and fell for it. There was so many references that I thought she couldn’t possibly be wrong! I did keto for around a year, I didn’t lose the weight I was hoping for but I feel it did help get my blood sugar better. Then luckily in 2020 we watched both seaspiracy and game changers and luckily for my my husband hopped on board. We’ve been mostly plant based since. The rest of the family still eats a little dairy, and now I can’t even bring myself to cook with meat. I feel great, though my iron is low (I was a regular blood donor 4x year)
I’ve had to stop. But I’m truly grateful to have found a sustainable, ethical and environment friendly way to eat.

I just found your channel and plan to watch every video. For about twenty years now I have tended towards WFPB. Now retired, I started doing volunteer trail maintenance and found that I needed more energy during work days. So, I reverted for a while back to what you would call the working mans diet of my youth. I no longer do the trail work, but still worry that most of the plant based cooking channels seem a bit "light". Also, be it plant based or Keto, very few talk about what it costs to buy the food. Of course beans cost less than steak. Thanks for all that you do.
Yeah, this. I thought keto was the health pathway after seeing 100lbs of success, but nevertheless I was seemingly wrong. I had always been cost effective and never letting any food spoil, but lentils, beans, and so on would be a while lot cheaper.

The concept of these Blue Zones is hogwash for the most part. Those data are cherry picked for the most part to push certain narratives. The data are fraught with healthy and unhealthy user bias.
Bottom line though, eat what makes you feel good in the setting of HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES. Whether you eat plant based vs animal, the issue is staying away from processed pseudo foods, making sure you exercise, don’t smoke, don’t drink, get some sun, engage socially, etc.
Fantastic tour of the latest nutritional trends and the science/rationale behind them, treated in a non-threatening manner. I've read many of the same books and appreciate references for the new ones. Contrary to the all-too-common public response of "I don't know what to think" the science is clear! I was listening to a debate between Paul Saladino (Carnivore diet doc) and Chris Kresser (Paleo diet book author) and was struck by how much they rely on anecdotes about understudied populations, like the Inuit. Neither are scientists, there was no mention of the big, disciplined studies done by respected scientists, like the Adventist 2 study, the Blue Zones, the China Study, etc. Lots of speculation about ancestral diets that archaeologists dispute, etc.
There's a parallel universe of scientists who study the microbiome and they make it totally clear: good gut microbes thrive on plants, bad ones on red meat and eggs. It's crystal-clear science.
@@Viva-Longevity Speaking of gut microbiome....a few years back I had a long commute and filled the time listening to TED talks and went down the rabbit hole of gut biome and how it is the second brain and affects mood and so many other things. When I heard it could affect allergies I had an 'aha' moment for myself. We were newly WFPB at the time so after reading from places like Dr. Greger's How Not to Die (thanks for that recommendation) and reviewing The China Study (I'd had a copy for for years) I decided to get as much variety in my WFPB diet to see if it could improve my severe food allergies. So severe that I spent $10,000 or so the previous years in ambulance rides thanks to anaphylactic episodes - and one was from just being in the room with the offending food! After 2 years of this 'as much plant variety' as possible it came time to get my allergies tested again. The tests came back completely NEGATIVE. The dr was so shocked that he said the tests had to be wrong and tested me again at his own expense. It came came back NEGATIVE again and I started eating all the foods again with no issues. Just an anecdote, I know, but I'm 100000% sold on variety being a plus on a WFPB diet. Thanks for all the work you do and bless your wife for 'allowing' you to nurture your curiousity and share that with the world. You are appreciated. P.S. Great stuff, thank you so much. I am a recovering paleo/primal dieter and even earned a Primal Health Coach certification a few years ago. Slowly I began to ask myself whether or not what I was doing, such as always skipping breakfast and eating a LOT of animal products, was actually benefitting me. The answer is no. I've never been much for processed food or sugar so that wasn't an issue, but the paleo/primal approach was simply not working. I'm now on day 6 of a mostly vegan approach and am regularly consuming your content, so to speak, for knowledge and motivation. Thanks for your incredibly well-researched videos.
If you need to supplement your diet to get the proper nutrition....you need a new diet.
The LDL levels on Paleo is super dangerous. You don't need to go to the opposite extreme of vegan. Vegetarians and Mediterranean diet are healthiest no need for supplements.

And you as someone with scientific background who is extremely well read should know. we are human like monkeys along with our closest cousins, then African great apes subfamily, then great apes family, then simians or higher primates a.k.a. anthropoids or simiiformes infraorder, in the order of simple/dry-nosed primates/monkeys, of three primates order. To avoid scientific names. We are no more not monkeys as we are not mammals or vertebrates or animals or living earthlings. I know you know this very well and you told us as what an average viewer thought but I had to rant because I hate so much when people say that.
"It's the sugar.. no, it's the saturated fat... the answer is yes" YES!
Also, thanks so much for that little clip with Bob Harper. I know he has high LP(a) as do I but seeing what he was consuming (coconut oil AND clarified butter in one blender full.. ouch) is the missing piece of the puzzle for me.

Again - AWESOME work! It really helped when you showed what to eat from the grocery store. (The bread episode) I hope to see more of that. But, the coconut oil and butter lesson was invaluable. I've been trying for years to learn how to eat right. There is so much bad information out there. The promise of eating what you love and the promise that it's good for you is pretty irresistible. ; ) I'm 57 years old. I don't have a whole lot of time to figure this out. I'm retired now which makes it possible to give it my all. My mom passed at 59 from a fatal heart attack. My oldest sister passed at 60 years old from a subdural hematoma after the nursing aide in the nursing home she had been living in for four years (after she had a stroke that left her bed bound at 56 years old) dropped her on her head while transferring her back to her bed. My oldest brother passed at 59 years old from a fatal heart attack that was brought on by damage from his chemo treatments for breast cancer. My dad passed away at 72 from complications of Alzheimers. (Basically, he starved to death from the negative effects of the medicine he was on which stole anything resembling an appetite from him. He was nothing but bones when he passed.) There are eight children left. (Ages 52-63) Two of the eight are considered pretty healthy. The rest of us are a mess. Two of them have brain tumors. One of them has had RA (arthritis) since she was a teenager. One of them is 400 pounds. We definitely didn't win in the gene pool lottery. I'm hoping I can change my stars. And, in closing..... Today is my one month anniversary of NOT smoking!! Four weeks!! I never thought it was possible. Ironically, both parents were heavy smokers, but I'm the only one out of 11 kids who chose to smoke. At least there's that. lol

Should be nothing. I've been told that frozen fruit is "fresher" than fruit in the produce section. I eat frozen pineapple and wild blueberries pretty regularly.

Love the video. One thought, isn't a bit extreme to set up "Keto or Vegan" as the only options? COuldn't a mostly vegetarian diet with OCCASIONAL meat (like special parties with friends once a week) be the best, because there are occasional rewards, not just constant vigilance against "unhealthy" food? As food neurosis can also be unhealthy. Enjoying life has huge benefits, yes?
The video was framed as vegan vs. keto because these diets are often seen as opposites within the broader dieting community. Keto influencers often advocate for a high-fat diet (often heavy in animal products) while vegan influencers and doctors often advocate for a diet high in carbohydrates from plants. By no means are these the only 2 options. From my point of view, having a 100% whole-food, plant-based diet is the best diet for optimal health, so if you're not concerned with optimal health and want to indulge in some occasional meat, it probably won't be too harmful.
Love all the research that went into this video. I had the same issue with The China Study, I was reading all the studies and even those had me looking up terms I've never heard.
Thanks! That's the thing about The China Study I wonder about every time I recommend it: it's pretty scientific. Originally, the publisher thought it would only sell 3,000 copies because of that - and the fact that it didn't contain recipes. It's heartening that it has sold more than 3,000,000 copies so far, but I always worry about the readability of it.

Mostly poultry, fish, veggies, fruit. Love my Yasso frozen yogurt bars. Don't do coconut oil, dont like following fads! Like the science in your videos👍

Like you I’m a scientist (8 years of tertiary education). I like facts and data and I use them to guide my decisions.
There are always exceptions in any dietary regime. Clearly some people do well on a high fibre plant based diet. I find it unsatisfying and I can’t eat large amounts of carbohydrates because I’m metabolically impaired. Keto works for me. Being honest it’s the only thing that’s ever consistently worked for me. My blood work is good; my triglycerides and my cholesterol ratios all drastically improved. My weight has stabilised back at my high school weight. I do eat fibrous vegetables plentifully as my only source of carbohydrates. I don’t feel poorly nourished. For me it works.
Keep putting out thought provoking videos. They’re very enjoyable.
I’ve been following the advice of Dr Caldwell Esselstyne for the past 3 years and I no longer suffer from Angina, plus I’ve lost weight without even trying! Whole Food Plant Based lifestyle is definitely for me 👍
The big problem with the monkey artery hypothesis is that Monkeys don't eat those foods in nature so obviously it is going to produce systematic stress to give them foods that they are not accustomed to, and so it supports the stress model of atherosclerosis.

Its not a problem because the results were replicated across multiple species, omnivore and herbivore. Also it is repeated daily on humans.
@@kj_H65f No longitudinal experiment has shown reduced all cause mortality from vegan diets versus omnivorous diets when calories were standardized. There is some evidence that omnivore diets raise the likelihood of overeating.
The recent Stanford twin experiment actually shows that when calories are controlled for there is NO difference. The Vegan diet twins ate about 200 fewer calories per day than the omnivorous twins and the health hazards reduction matching what would be expected from a 200 calorie reduction independent of food choices.

That was hard. I rented a couple of teleprompters and was stiff when I read from them. Eventually I settled on writing a script but trying to repeat it verbatim also made me stiff. So I just looked at a few lines of the script, then ad libbed a few takes until I felt okay about it and just cut them together UA-cam-style, with jump cuts. I was relieved that people thought it worked.

I just cannot understand why there are not hundreds of thousands or millions of people watching you - well of course except the unpopularity of the truth that you need to eat healthy food to be healthy.
I think which diet works best is the one that works for you.
I eat far more veg and fibre that most on a ketogenic diet. In addition I drink kefir and eat sauerkraut and kimchi almost daily. Yet I’m on a ketogenic diet. I don’t beat UPF whatsoever and stick to real food.
I don’t eat fruit other than berries very infrequently. I limit myself to 20g of carbs a day.
I’m never hungry and have no cravings.
I eat a square of 99% chocolate per day. I drink coffee before midday but not until I’ve been away for 2 hours.
I stay well hydrated and eat whatever else I want but in moderation since I’m never hungry.
I’ve lost 15% of my body weight and have another 30 kg to go to reach my ideal weight.
I’ve reversed my type 2 diabetes. Stopped all my meds apart from metformin.
My by ranges from. 96/65 to 110/70. My resting heart rate has dropped to 55/ min sinus rhythm.
I cycle 2-3 times per week and have just started with light weights with a plan to increase over the next 6-12 months.
I’m in my 60s.
My lipid profile has improved on keto and my waist circumference is down 8-9 inches.
New temporary wardrobe.
My friends all say I look younger. I feel it too.

Thanks Mr. Fiddles! Hahaha, we gave away all the junk and animal food to the neighbors. 😮 I'm 99% whole plant based but will eat some fish on some social occasions to keep from making people uncomfortable.
How about doing a segment on why people lose weight on every "diet" ever published across the macro spectrum? Maybe it has more to do with being and maintaining a calorie deficit - a topic I haven't heard you mention once. I'm sure Mark Died on would chime in on that as well, not to mention HRT (why he looks like he does). I was heartened to hear you finally acknowledge modified keto, which is essentially LCHF - not tied to the 20 gm carb restriction of keto, and one rich in quality, unprocessed vegetables and low glycemic fruits.
I remember back when i used to tell people coconut oil is not healthy. Then I gave up. I thought I was being pedantic. Now that I know about the monkey trials, I may start again.
Think about it. Monkeys are animals that eat vegetables, fruits, and insects. Giving them Large amounts of meat...of course it's going to play havoc on his system. The same with birds, and other animals they tested that don't eat anything normally except insects! The reports here are ridiculous.

Great video! So far, I have watched it four times consecutively. I took a look at US News rankings of diets, and though the various diets do jockey around for position over the years, the Mediterranean diet generally lands in the top three. It was also nice to get the background on Jack Lalanne- I didn't know that he had Adventist influence in his early life.
I subscribed to the channel a while back. Is there any chance that you can do a video on the intersection between the muscle-bound, low-carb/keto/carnivore/high protein approaches and longevity-mortality? Sure, plenty of "Body-builders gone too soon" videos exist on youtube, and I see you have done a couple of videos on the lifespans of diet gurus (great videos, BTW), but to date, I haven't seen anyone do a deep dive on this (though I am aware of a few epidemiological studies on this over the years).

Chris! Love you man. Great gems. Amazing how honing in on nutrition can radically improve all aspects of our well being. Thanks for sharing some of the "fruits" of your journey. Garrett and I have been using calorie/macros tracking apps to hit goals in 2020 and its helped me get way more conscious about food choices and further driven home the value of eating whole foods. Down 30 pounds since January 1! But I've been trying to save my muscle and getting enough protein is the hardest part of hitting my macros. Fat and carbs are never a problem. How do you get enough protein eating vegan? Do I really need 175g of protein? Would love to pick your brain next time I see you.
Hey Ryan! Major respect for losing 30 pounds!! Not many people can do that and keep it off, but I lost 43 twenty years ago and generally keep 38 of them off without having to think too hard about it.
Getting enough protein is the #1 question people ask about going plant-based and I plan a whole episode on that, after the one I'm working on now about tricks the food companies play, and the next one on your fascinating poop and what it's telling you. Until then, have you watched Game Changers? Fantastic.
Honestly, the food companies are so genius at marketing, they got all of us worried about protein even though all plants have complete protein, and plenty of it. It's where the animals get theirs from, and we get it from them somewhat used and oxidized in quantities that can be toxic. I know, that sounds like I'm out there, but I promise the episode will be sane. It sounded like I was out there about coconut oil too before this episode, no?
The thing to worry about is fiber. Our guts depend on a wide variety of fiber, in other words, a wide variety of plants.

I went vegan 5 yrs ago & get most of my protein from beans (lentils have the highest amounts). I love having a bowl of rice & beans topped w/ salsa & a touch of avocado. Since going vegan, my protein & calcium levels have been great (even slightly improved relative to my omnivore days). Have to say I have been surprised the protein question hasn’t been an issue at all (BTW my high cholesterol dropped to normal levels & my blood sugar as well, no meds). Couldn’t be more thankful.
What about fat without all the sugar? Sugar causes inflammation in the arteries that has fat become plaque. But without all the sugar my inflammation in my body has just left me. I feel great everyday which is odd as I do BJJ and am sore normally and stiff.
My take is that you’re non-committal… I guess you’re trying to show pros & cons of both lifestyles? I’ll figure it out! 😃

What does science say about the following: Collagen and or Bone Broth, Fish oil, Fatty fish, organ meat, especially liver, avocado oil. What about tomato skin? I saw some anti lectin doctor claiming that tomato skins were the worst thing you could possibly eat.

Why are portion sizes not an issue but instead it is what you eat? I walk into say Panda Express and order a plate and the amount given is consumed as lunch for some. That amount I could consume as lunch and half my dinner. Is not the bigger issue the portion size? Speaking as a casual observer not a scientist and trying to understand why portion size is not the first issue to deal with, which intuitively I think it should before we get into the details of the diet. The normal servings given in the USA I feel is a lot.
I have watched most of the 'healthy food' channels and love several - Greger, Barnard, Campbell and others, and I really like this one. I appreciate your deep dives on the science and research, and independent conclusions. I lost 80 lbs. in a year on a whole foods plant based diet (plus walking), and feel 30 years younger. Is it healthy? Who knows, but it worked for me.
