- Recording audio outdoors for your videos can be a pretty big challenge. Let’s take a look at a few pieces of relatively affordable gear and setups that can help you get the best possible audio when you’re not in a controlled environment.
Anytime you’re making a video it’s important to remember that what your audience hears has just as much impact as what they see, which means you should never underestimate the importance of audio in your videos.

Outside can be really though, but luckily it’s definitely doable.
@@tombuck Good wind screens or wind filters are the cure. The deadcat muffs work best. Foam works well also.

100 degrees is a nice day here in Australia! And all I use is RODE cause naturally I love Australian companies and especially Australian made products and to me its a great bonus that RODE produces quality products at relatively affordable prices, the RODE wireless GO has definitely upped the Audio in my videos so I can get a consistent sound bo matter where I'm standing when I film which is great! Great video as usual! I’ve a RØDE VideoMic NTG, and I’ve had great results with that wired AND using the Wireless Go to transmit to camera. Here’s a video suggestion - you and Heather travel to Australia to the RØDE headquarters to interview ROYAN and the guys there - it would be a great way to demonstrate a bunch of the techniques you’ve taught over the last few years videos.
I love that idea, haha! I think it was when the Rodecaster came out, they made a whole series of videos covering every single feature. By the last few videos that poor guy seems so exhausted and drained. I feel bad, but it was kind of funny to watch the energy fade from one video to the next- I felt that pain.

You did cover the handheld wireless microphone, there are many choices, many are less than $150. Nady makes many wireless microphones. (I have a few).
I used to have a Nady wireless system for my guitar and it worked very well.

It's worth it! I've been trying to improve my skills with lav mics since they really seem like gamechangers for the outdoors.
I was on the hunt for the best way to block out the sound of cars passing by. I was recording a video outside a few days ago and you can hear the cars driving by. I was using my Rode VideoMic Go with the dead cat. So you answered my question. The Rode Wireless Go is the solution. Thank you!

Great tips in this video and I wish I watched it when I was just starting out. I have a cycling channel and it took me a LONG while to figure out my audio. I ended up going with the Rode Wireless Go and it made a huge difference.

I just got an alvoxcon wireless lav set (2 pack) for $86 on amazon. Not happy with the quality, I’m trying to record an outdoor sit down conversation/interview. What would you recommend for a maximum budget of $200? I also have an iphone and ipad to use as a wired receiver if necessary. Looking for sound quality that’s equal or better to talking to an iphone 11 pro vlog style indoors. Thanks!

I love filming outdoors- it's just the heat limit in the summer. It's going to be 120f most of this week! I'd love to do more outside though. Despite how hot it is, the desert has a lot of cool scenery and locations.

Question on about the Go. I often do exercise videos with my shirt off and prefer not to have things connected to me (other than my pants) I like to go into nature lightweight. Can I put the Go on the ground or on a stick about 5 feet away from me and get good quality? Thanks.

Thank you! This is the Flashpoint 10ft C Stand from Adorama. I like it because the columns are spring-cushioned, so it prevents you from smashing fingers or dropping equipment heavily.
Hey ... great video. I'm looking for 2 things;
- Advice about using a Rode VideoMic Pro with the subject about 15-20' away (on a Canon R6). Levels, high pass filter etc etc.
- A Rode vlogger who still checks their UA-cam channel and answers questions!
From what I have just tested, I will need to boost the camera levels beyond the basic 1-notch that many are doing. But it's whether I use the +20 db and high-pass filter, then raise the levels in the camera that has me stumped.
Several vloggers say take the camera amp out of play.
15-20’ is pretty far. You could try enabling the +20db boost and then bring up the camera’s gain as needed, but I can’t say for sure that that would work. At that distance, I think that either booming the mic or using a wireless system would be best.
Camera preamps are usually not the best, but if you keep it under 50% it should still give a pretty clean signal.
@@tombuck Thanks Tom .. and I'm fast learning this. The VMP is fantastic and works happily from that distance, but obviously there would be an issue with the sound floor (a new term I learnt today!).
This is a low (low!) key event, so sound quality isn't important, but the extreme wind in the previous session sent me off to buy a deadcat. My initial searches were around any extra gain/requirements with the deadcat fitted (+ outdoors + 70-200), but I haven't found much that fits this scenario.
If I stay this course and keep getting video jobs then I can see me doing more of this. Hence the VMP + Rode Go + boom could be ideal for future similar events.
Question re: boom - Assume it just has to be within vicinity? Is there a distinct benefit from having it raised, rather than closer to the floor? Assume because people tend to project up-and-out when they speak.

Love watching your videos. Out of curiosity for the Rodecaster pro, would you be able to record both audio & video from let's say a tablet or phone by connecting the USB C cable? Just a thought. I was gonna try it with my rodecaster & my Samsung Tab 6S for podcasting waiting on my rodecaster to come in.
Thanks for the kind words! The Rodecaster doesn’t handle any sort of video signal, but you could definitely connect your camera and the Rodecaster to your computer separately and run them into the same app (something like OBS). 👍

What lav mic did you plug into the wireless go transmitter? Sounded pretty good!
This was the Rode Lavalier Go, but their more recent updated version is a lot better.
Hi Tom. Another excellent video. I wonder if you can provide advice on solving the opposite side of this issue? I want to find a microphone that I can attach to a device like the Zoom F2 to capture nature sounds while on canoe and backpacking trips. The Zoom H3 VR looks like it is designed for this purpose however what I really need is just the microphone option. Any suggestions (preferably something on the budget friendly side). For clarity I am trying to capture the sound of wind in the trees, canoe blades moving through the water, birds chirping.
I’m inclined to recommend something like the Rodecaster VideoMicro or VideoMic Pro. They have the 3.5mm headphone jack and with a dead cast can capture nature sounds pretty well.
Your audio sounds really clean. Do you do much post processing ie reducing noise? I find i still get a white noise hiss with the rode wireless go and lav even with external mic settings manually adjusted in camera.
I do very little audio processing (should probably do more, really). I keep my camera's audio level super low and then boost the signal from the mic itself, and that seems to help.
Hey Tom! Great video! I have been recently trying to get good audio outside. I use a Sennheiser MKE 600, which I researched to be a pretty good middle of the road mic. When recording audio outside, the talent sounds great, but everyone and their mother can also be heard on camera, loud enough that I can't reduce it in post. The mic is usually on a boom about 3 feet from the talent. Is there some tips? or is it kind of just a crapshoot and wait for more silence in the area? Thanks!

I haven't used the MKE600 myself, but from what I know, it SUPPOSED to be great as a boom and they say it "effectively attenuates noise coming from the sides and rear."
That being said, my thoughts are that it all has to do with positioning. Allen from SoundSpeeds (I bring him up because he's a pro boom operator) told me to film myself from the side while moving my mic in different positions and then waiting until something sounds great to look and see where the mic was.
It's simple but surprisingly helpful. Sometimes angling the mic straight down or at an angle can make a huge difference in how it does or doesn't pick up unwanted sounds.
Thanks for the video! But how were you able to get ahold of the Rode Interview GO Handheld Mic Adapter? That $29 item has been on back-order everywhere for the longest time, I've been wanting that piece of plastic handle, LOL!
Luckily they were in stock last summer for a bit and I got one. I think I found it at B&H if I remember right?
Love this! What products/set up would you recommend for musicians? Say, a singer accompanying herself on guitar or a keyboard outdoors? I have a G7X camera for reference. Thanks for sharing Tom!
Ooh that’s a good question. Ideally I think you’d want two mics- one for your voice and one for your instrument. That means either getting a mixer or a small interface like a Scarlett 2i2.
If you’re just looking for the simplest “get-it-done” option, I’d vote for a Rode Videomic NTG that you can connect to your camera.

On the wireless go, do you keep the decibel level at the highest level? Will that get me between the -6 and -12 you recommend? Thanks.
It depends, but I usually keep it on the "middle" setting, which is _supposed to be about -12.

I have to take videos on a boat for fishing and need to not be connected to any wires and have use of my hands when shooting footage. Do you think the lavalier microphone and the rode wireless go would be the best way to capture audio?
I do! I recently did a video about the Deity Pocket Wireless, which I actually like better than the single transmitter Rode. But if you need 2 transmitters, then the Wireless Go 2 is definitely the way to go.

Ooh, that’s a tough one and I don’t know for certain, but there are ways to tape lav mics to a person’s chest that might work. Otherwise a super directional shotgun mic might be easiest 🤔

Yes, you can either connect it to the smartphone channel, or use a 3.5mm to XLR cable and connect it to any of the 4 main channels 👍

The Mark II doesn’t have a mic input, so I’d recommend getting something like a Zoom H1, using it as your microphone, and syncing the audio when you edit. I have my students do this all the time and it works great.

Shotgun mics are pretty great. ThenZoom H5 is a great field recorder and it has a shotgun attachment too 👍

Use the biggest windscreen or deadcat you can for your mic and you should be good to go 👍
Some lav mic has a boxy sound to it and some only sound good if you put it directly in front of your mouth

What Lav mic are you using with the Wireless GO ?
It's an older Rode one- I think it's the Lavalier GO? I have their fancy new lav now though and it's super nice.

I’m not big on sponsorships and whatnot, but I will 100% take free gear from Rode. 😁
On-camera mics work suprisingly well outside, just put a deadcat on the mics (at least with Canon cameras, on Panasonics the sound is too tinny). It's the reverb in the rooms which makes them unusable inside (as well as any mic which is too far from the sound source)
One of my favorite channels on UA-cam is Justin Scarred, who does a ton of theme park/roadside attraction videos, and after years of watching, I learned he just talks directly into the on camera mic of a Canon 80D and it always sounds great because he's super close to it.
That was probably an unnecessary story, but whatever.
@@tombuck yeah, EOS 80D really surprised me with the quality of captured sound outside when I randomly recorded a dance band playing and to my shock it was not the usual tinny crackling garbage audio I expected from on-camera mics...
from 4:01 to 4:34 ... so what does it mean if you combine Rode wireless go & wired lav mic? Both devices pick up sound with their microphones at the same time? How is it possible that just by adding the Rode wireless go suddenly eliminates wind noises? Is it because you are now using 2 microphones at the same time?
When you connect a wired mic to it, the internal mic turns off, so it's only coming through the lavalier 👍

Tom, can you help advise me please? *Scenario*: PC indoors connected to USB 2.0 cable which is outside my property (it goes through the loft from my room).
I want to connect a USB mic outdoors so I can hear wind in nearby bushes/trees, birds, rainfall and thunderstorms. I'm not too concerned by bit-rates, sample rates etc etc so long as the mic picks up wind, rain, birds and can be fitted to my wall without a massive bracket. I'll be using a mic muffler too to help protect against clipping when wind hits the mic.
Budget can be cheap as chips up to a (still pretty cheap) $50, tops (I'm in the UK though, so, £ ideally). My primary question is not asking you to name any specific models, but: Are there any figures or specs I should be looking for? *as in, mic reach range (distant, near, wide, omni, uni etc) and microphone type? Thank you. :)
Hey Kris! This is interesting. The Rode Videomic NTG is my favorite USB shotgun mic. It's great for picking up environmental sounds like you described and can be used with a USB C cable or connected to a camera/recorder with a 3.5mm cable.
The tricky part is how long you plan to leave the mic outside. I don't personally know of any mics/cables that are rated to withstand the elements for an extended period of time, but I'm sure there's something out there for that 🤔
@@tombuck Tom, hi. Thanks for getting back to the on this. I currently have an old Logitech webcam (with a (cheap n nasty mic) out there, it's been under the eave for several years with no issues.
I hope the Rode is short, I can't have it poking out from under the eave or it'll surely get rain ingress. :)

Hi Tom, there is cheaper better solutions (although i like rode, Australian like me) .
You can buy voice recorders and cheap lavier mics and buy many of them, you place them on people and record as many people as you have recorders/mics. You then sync in post. This is what most pros use. Common pro brands are zoom and tascam. But you can use most voice recorders on the market and range from around $50 USD upwards.
Definitely some great options! And budget friendly in a lot of cases too 👍

Basically I have an
Olympus WS- 853 digital voice recorder, which I use for meetings and regular stuff, (although it's not as good as I thought it was despite being £85), I once recorded rain sound with it while outside just by using the handheld recorder alone but the noise capture was not the best of quality and the wind seemed to really mess up with the sound too.
Does anyone have any suggestions for external microphones or other cheap but really good bits of equipment I could buy to fix the wind and quality problem especially when recording outside noise. If so I would really appreciate it 💛 if you could give full names of recommended products or equipment, or full details in advice. Thank you!
If you’re just looking for a standalone recorder, the Zoom H1n is pretty affordable.

Funny. I actually think for some purposes, the lav mic picks up _too little_ of the environment. Great if all you want is the voice, but too clean if the environment plays a role in your scene. Both in narrative as well as documentary film making that could be a problem.
FYI - Your still missing some ‘BAD Joke’ in the edit!! Just so you know. A small point that you maybe should have listed the many other ways to do this. Like use an external recorder being the one I do all the time (I have the TASCAM DR-70D) that records up to four tracks and it addtional send a stereo mix to the Camera. Another cheap option is to use your iPhone with a externail mic to get the second audio and fix in post. I have to admit I from the spend more money/time on sound than video camp. Shure makes a great MV88 portable mic that can connect to your phone that is EXCELLENT! (and none of these are sponsored I’m just a retire guy who does a podcast)

I have a video coming out next week that compares the NTG to the Pro Plus, and ultimately, I like the NTG better. It's more versatile and has that awesome gain dial to let you get exactly the level you want. I think the Pro Plus sounds slightly more full, but they're both excellent.

That's a great option too! Especially with some of the little Zoom recorders that are available.
