- F-Zero X is simply the best racing game of all time, and as it's just come to the Switch, I'm going to take a moment to enjoy one of the fastest, smoothest, most brutal racing games ever made...

Jon - Changes the Blue Falcon to pink as he wants to be on brand.
Also Jon - Ignores Samurai Goroh whos craft is hot pink as standard.
Retro Saturday would be a fun bi-weekly series idea. Just little one-offs of good old games ^^
I did love when Jon did Jet Force Gemini. Bringing back those older console titles is great for the older crowd.
What about if one day a week he did a game from an older generation that he's never played before?
@@cleverman383 Ooh, maybe he could give it a catchy aliterative name, something like try-out Tuesdays or something like that
I would watch the s*** out of this
@@Yorie1234 How about Fuck it Friday?
"Now this is Podracing!" - Anakin Skywalker.
another fantastic racing game of the era
@@Kaarl_Mills heck yeah
Reminds me more of Swoop Racing
Try spinning, it's a good trick
Somebody had to say it.
This won't mean much compared to the gameplay and the soundtrack even, but I like how they designed and tried to characterise so many different pilots.
F-Zero X!!!!! One of my favorites of all time! They got a racing game running at 60 FPS consistently on the N64, and that's incredible! And I will never understand why Rainbow Road only has the Mario Kart music in the Japanese version!
Jon constantly murdering Tanaka, then saying he has to kill him again to get into first place was bloody hilarious
Captain Falcon and Tanaka will be having words after the race.
@@ManyATrueNerd not if Tanaka is dead.
@@therealcrisis8439 double dead
Yeah, this REQUIRES a modern remake. Imagine this game with better textures and models with support for two analogue sticks, one for steering, one for nudging.
Idk, I think it works fine as it is
@@TFBUPatron a remake doesn't unmake the original lol
I'm surprised Nintendo didn't do that thing they seem to like doing and make an online battle royale style game of it. Like F-Zero X had that death race mode. 30 racers, infinite laps, last one alive wins. How they heck hasn't Nintendo done a Mario 35 or Tetris 99 or Pacman 99 with F-Zero?
F-Zero GX exists
Always loved the X cup.
And HOLY DAMN that second X track! That was a bloodbath!
God... I forgot how good this games soundtrack is. Might be the best on the N64?
I unfortunately missed out on F-Zero X back in its launch days. I remember the Nintendo Power issue that showed off the racers, and thought it looked super awesome, but I never ran across a copy.
I was super into GX though. I tried so SO hard to unlock all of the secret racers through story mode. Ended up missing out on 4 of them that I just couldn't quite manage. T_T
Jon gushing about his favorite games is one of the purest things on earth
Oh my good God I had forgotten all about this great game! Wish they could do a modern remake :/
Okay so I apparently played enough of this game that just watching and hearing that music again is making my heart pump faster!
If you really want the music to get your heart pumping, check out Mega Driver's Mute City cover, or any of their other songs for a weird nostalgic feeling of hearing classic 80-90's game songs, I love their cover fo Green Hill Zone.
This was one of those awesome games I missed back in the day and got to experience via emulation during the mid 2000s, when I was catching up with everything my town's rental places never had. It's still one of my favorite racing games ever, it's so damn good.
Hoping Nintendo gives us F-Zero GX too. That skill floor though, oh my. That was hard to even just finish the story
The casino race on the highest difficulty still haunts my nightmares.
@@ManyATrueNerd I had forgotten about Casino's 90° turns.
Even on Normal you needed advanced corner-cutting techniques to even dare to hope winning, can't imagine about Master
@@Raykkie I spent so many hours restlessly trying to pull it off and even had my brother who has generally better skills in games than me and we both couldn't win. It's such a cruel race for the casual and intermediate players.
Wipeout was similar to this on the PS1, fast paced, futuristic and they added weapons.
Just when I think I have gotten over Jon saying "toss off" by the end of the video, he starts talking about "flicking someone off".
I miss this game so much. Clearing absolutely everything on every difficulty was a trial, but I remember relishing every minute of it - even the time trials ^_^
Thanks for covering one of the most influential games of my youth
On the topic of X-Cup, I remember having a level, where almost immediately after the starting line, was a sheer, 90 degree drop, into a 90 Degree left corner. I was the ONLY survivor, and won by default without needing to clear a single lap XD Good times.
I have been playing this game a lot lately, and the gameplay has indeed held up perfectly. The solid 60fps and ultra responsive controls has a lot to do with that, it's an extremely well designed game that's tricky to master and has a very satisfying learning curve.
Only game better is F-Zero GX, where you could customize your machine. Truly a masterpiece and the soundtrack had stuck with me to this day.
Now this brings back a lot of happy memories. Although I didn't play F-Zero X, I did play the Gameboy Advance's F-Zero GP Legends game and it had some seriously tough tracks, as well as amazing music that I still think about to this day.
I never played F-Zero back in the day but I totally understand the hype now.
Jon really showed us his moves in this video!
"people are dying, possibly they're being tossed off" Jon please this is a family show
If you have never played Rush 2049 it is hands down one of the best games on N64. It's a regular race game and the cars have deployable glider wings for stability while racing when you get air, collectable hidden coins to unlock cars, unlockable levels (I just found out I still missed unlocking one called the obstacle course after losing years of my youth in the game), has stunt tracks that you go off ramps and get points for doing tricks with the wings to do spins n what not, and gosh darn Twisted Metal style battle mode.
Oh yeah, a livestream is a must. I loved this game.
i remember back in the days of elementary school where each morning on the weekdays i would head over next door to my best friend and he would be there sitting in front of the tv playing the n64 and he was playing this game and i would join him in playing and racing, it was total fun til we had to leave to catch the bus. good times wish i could go back you know.
After years of hearing fans of this series beg for a new entry, I finally know why. If it didn't involve paying for Nintendo's BS online service, I'd absolutely give this a try.
Pssst. Just saying, emulators exist! I'm not saying you should use them, I am merely stating that they are a thing that is present in this universe.
@@maxx_2245 Sad part? This version is emulated and it shows how bad Nintendo's own N64 emulation on the Switch is. Because if you hack, or hard mod your Switch? You'll find that there are N64 emulators from the homebrew scene, that run this game graphically far better than what Nintendo expects us to pay an extra $30 a year for. It's pathetic and never mind what emulators on other platforms can do with this game. Edit: I mean this game looks far better on original hardware too. Keep that in mind.
@@maxx_2245 absolutely nothing wrong with legally emulating your favorite game . Just don't use those horrible piracy sites to download roms ;)
Emulators exist, use them, dont support a shitty publisher
And feel free to use emulator sites, the original game designers have moved on, you are only funding the corrupt execs further. Last thing they need is another payrise
that second X cup track was absolutely nuts for how many people died on lap one
Jon: Even if I die on this next course, I win. (proceeds to die seconds into the course)
Jon: "Best game on the N64 in 2022."
Super Smash Bro's: "Am I a Joke to you?"
Personally, Perfect Dark 64 was my favorite N64 game, with Ocarina of Time and Smash tied for second.
I would be GX in my opinion, but X is unique that it does have not only Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road or Port Town II from the original SNES game, but also a random track generator (X Cup).
"F-Zero X - The Best Racing Game Of All Time"
A title I can 100% agree with.
I vastly preferred GX on the Gamecube, but I like all F-Zero.
FZX Jon - "I just got tossed off"
This had jumping up and down cheering. I'd love a Saturday live stream of this. Maybe a drinking game; we can buy you shots then drink on the crashes. The pacing should allow enough time to have Clair keep up on comments and donations between races.
I have many fond memories with the snes f-zero, spent many an afternoon with friends trying to hurl ourselves the furthest into the cities >
I’m so happy you played this!
Admittedly we did have 60FPS console games back on the NES as well. It was pretty standard until 3D graphics came along, starting with Star Fox and it's... well it did indeed have a frame rate, it sure did.
This looks amazing, did't Jon also have a video on Wipeout, which feels sort of similar in style?
Alternate video title: "F-Zero X: Baba is Not You"
Damn it's even so much fun to watch, I wasn't aware it was this good.
Dude, F-Zero looks great, and that framerate is amazing for an N64 game! How come they haven't made more of these?
Bad sales
Because Nintendo rather cashes in on New new mario luigi bros 5, gimmicky motion control game - switch version and 'hey look, yet more DLC Smash Bros characters!'. Sell outs.
I have never seen 27 retirements before and I played this religiously as a kid, lol. incredible
Oh my gosh. This game was my childhood! So glad you also like it! :D
Also, can we just appreciate how this game did anti gravity before Mario Kart 8 did? On a Nintendo 64? This game is truly a technological marvel.
My little brother and I played this game an insane amount. It was SO fun. My favorite ship was the pink one with flames....ahhhh the memories! I can't wait to pick up my switch and play it.
edit: OMG the X cup! I FORGOT HOW COOL THAT WAS! Yaaaay what a good game.
This game really good. Best racing game Ive ever played.
dayum that pipe race track is serious businness
27:45 bro, that map is literally shaped like Texas and everyone knows what Texas is famously known for being. 😂😂😂😂😂
I think you would love Redout on Steam -- a modern take on this formula done really well and with a full VR mode
The x Cup was great for a 90s kid - unlimited playability was great when all you had was pocket money
"Just in case you've never played it before"
Talk about an understatement: one, a not insignificant portion of your audience wasn't even alive yet in 1998. Two, even for people like me who were, I was only marginally aware of this game and its existence. I never saw it on shelves or at Blockbuster, with only 480,000 units sold between Japan and North America. For myself and most people this series' main claim to fame is Cpt. Falcon being on the roster of Smash games.
But for what it's worth, Mute City was always my favorite smash stage
The sales numbers reported for this are very varying. I saw 1.1M at one site. I also saw FZero GX at 1.5M on one site (quoted from a developer of it) and
I had a social life in 1998 and I wasn't aware of what video games there were at the time.
@@AJFay77 the number I'm quoting is only from those markets: Japan, The US, Canada, and Mexico. It is not including Europe or worldwide sales, that said, it's only these 4 nations that seem have accurate sales figures
I was knee-deep in Fallout 2 in '98.
I had no idea Jon's audience was so young. I always assumed most were in their mid 30s
I'd just like to say that today i learned jon's switch avatar and mine are the exact same
This game feels a lot like the film Red Line especially in the X cup.
I played this game downloaded from the Wii Shop and loved the hell out of it. The music is amazing, all the different drivers are cool, and I might have played the death race a hundred times because it was just too darn fun.
One of the games of my early childhood, others being Yoshi's Story, Super Mario 64 & the Zelda 64 games. So happy to be seeing this here today
Yoshi's Story is so underrated, is isn't brought up nearly enough! :D
I still remember so many of the cars and what they're good at. I played this game a lo too.
27:01 dying while getting tossed off is the worse
25:50 There's enough people for a podium
XD I love this game and I am remembering why it was so good. I never picked it up again because on the surface, it doesn't look like much! I'm really glad to see it was actually *that* good.
Thrilled to see Im not the only person who still enjoys this classic.
I've always been a huge fan of F-Zero. I've never played it, but I loved its music from hearing it in Smash Bros so much that it's one of my all time favorite game soundtracks.
F Zero X was amazing. The 64DD expansion pack was also really good with its track editor.
I spent possibly 5 years perfecting Jumps of Doom with a mate. the whole game to play, and we only ever played JoD.
Ooooh I've been hoping you'd do something like this! Thanks Jon ☺️
There was one called just F-zero I think? Still my favourite racing game.
Please tell me you are streaming this next week!!! I loved this game, going to have to get it on the switch! still looks amazing.
I still play this somewhat regularly with a buddy of mine as a drinking game
I loved this game! Jon didn't show my favorite part which was an endless mode where your only goal was to be the last one standing.
More of this... MORE!
I never played this one but the one on the snes I owned and played the hell out of it, great memories
This was my favorite N64 game as a kid, I always knew Jon had good taste.
I forgot that Daylight savings doesn't apply to Brits lol. I guess I'll wait another hour for my Fallout fix
Personally, I've never thought any of the F-Zero games I played were fun.
Jon, you made the chive!
If this game was released as an indie game in 2022, a lot of people would have it as their GOTY
How come Captain falcon never got a Adventure game? Like Mario 64 or donkey Kong or legends of Zelda drive and running around
Can't help but feel you'd be into Redout Enhanced Edition. I feel like it's basically this but modern.
F-Zero, best game on SNES
F-Zero X, best game on N64
I lost so many hours of my childhood to these games.
Not gonna lie, part of me thought this was the F-Zero that I had on the SNES, and was gonna have a major nostalgia meltdown
Omg this was one of my fav game when I was little
Huh, this video gave more attention to F-zero then nintendo has in a decade
YES!!! One of the best racing games ever made!!!
The memories have been unlocked!
@26:00 - Man, the Mighty Gazelle benefited mightily from that track, going up 17 places. :)
Loved this game back in the day.
Extreme g was a solid n64 racer too. Not sure about the sequels though
Thank you for the video.
Now all you need Jon is for them to localise the N64DD expansion and have that added to the game. How much fun could you have with an F-Zero X Track editor?
Still baffles me that Nintendo refuse to make a new F-Zero.
I'm sure there's a Baba is You joke to be made here somewhere.
I use the wild goose I love it and I love F zero x
Is it bad that the music makes me nostalgic for Super Smash Bros Melee?
It seems, somebody has not played Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge on the Amiga...
Yes you can make it run in widescreen, I play it in 21:9 all the time... and let me tell you, the sense of speed is even better.
A true competitor to gran turismo 7
lol so this is the game that Kakyoin played in that one episode
Is it just me or did the second to last track in Jon's X Cup look kind of like Texas?
Please Nintendo, for the love of everything good in the world, please make a new F-Zero game. No more Mario Kart cameos, a proper F-Zero.
Hope they add Iggy's wrecking balls. loved that game.
YES! PREACH! PREACH!
Stream it big man!
