The number ONE reason for using a tele lens is NOT about depth of field. It’s about the angle of view. Wide angle lenses exaggerate perspectives, which is very annoying for portrait, when tele lenses flatten them. The shallow depth of field is an added bonus. You should try native lens, 2x and 3x converters with the same framing, not the same distance from the camera. While the framing will be the same (same amount of your face in the picture) these will definitively be 3 quite different pictures, telling 3 difference stories.
The Ulanzi definitely seemed sharper than the Beastgrip. I am disappointed with the lack of filter threads on the ulanzi, however, as for any serious iPhone shooting I’m doing these days, I almost always want to use an ND or the pro mist filters. Hopefully Ulanzi will release a 2.0 version that had thread mounts. Both companies continue to innovate for phone filmmakers, though companies like Beastgrip and Moment, etc., tend to price their products just out of my budget range, while Ulanzi is reliably affordable. Thanks for testing these lenses. I was glad to see them in action.
getting the ulanzi, its just perfect. i dont have to back up that far to get a perfect shallow dof compared to the beast grip plus it would be a perfect addition to my s22. imagine the main 1/1.56 sensor and the f 1.8 plus this telephoto lens man the background blur is going to be creamy and you dont have to get that close to the subject to achieve that this is amazing and its compact! ❤️
Thanks for the videos that you've done one this and related subjects. You take the time to really investigate and talk about what others such as me want to know. That Ulanzi is something that I'm going to try now that I saw your video. I wanted to point out something that seems to rarely get mentioned: that on smartphone cameras (such as my iPhone X), the default 1x lens usually causes fish-eye distortions due to their "default" of taking in the widest shot. To me, when shooting a person's face it makes the subject look like they are in a fun-house of mirrors and it's unappealing. Do we want the face of our subject to look distorted? So I always try to switch to the longer lens on the camera (e.g. hit the 2x on my iPhone X) and take a few steps back to get the same amount in frame. Aren't most prime "portrait" lenses on a SLR camera often chosen on the order of 85 to 135mm? I think that it's for multiple reason and one among them is lack of distortion. You wouldn't shoot up in their face with a 28mm, right? Beside smelling each other's breath they would look distorted which is the point I'm trying to make. I've taken photos of my wife and others using both the "standard" magnification iPhone lens and then framed the same but standing further from the subject using the longer lens. It startles people when they see the resulting images side-by-side and the response is almost always that "the close up lens shot makes me look distorted and UNATTRACTIVE". To me it is sad that people accept looking really unnatural and distorted on video chats and in taking photos or movies this way. Who wants the center of their face effectively magnified and the peripheral parts of their face unnaturally shrunken?? Many webcams and front facing smartphone cameras do this. Add in failure to get white balance correct and the impression is of someone seriously needing medical help. ;-)
Brilliant comparison. Whilst the Beastgrip was more zoomed in the Ulanzi looked like a clearer image to my eyes and really good quality. So cheap as well.
Good video. Some points, Ulanzi has its own universal cage 17mm so you don't need a clip and Filmic Pro controls are accesible. This lenses not are real tele. This lenses are macro lenses in a phone if you like a cool bokeh. I mean you have to shot very close to your subject. If I would had have this lenses to compare I will do the test in other way. I would test this lenses putting in a scene and getting the best bokeh, and then, I would try to put my subject in focus. I mean, not focus and get dof. Better get doff, and then, getting the best position focus.
How ironic! Long story short, I’ve been confronted with a problem with my Moment 58mm that forced me to purchase the Beastgrip 3X Tele this morning. I was super nervous and skeptical, but as I went to purchase, Amazon has a severely marked down price for nearly 60$ off a warehouse offer. I pulled the trigger but then when doubts creeps up after buying, and here you are talking about it in this amazing video showcasing a handful of its strengths. Thank you, thank you! I know I made the right call now.
Mobile Motion Definitely why I had to get it to replace my 58mm Moment Tele on my A camera, because there’s no actually physical security when attaching their filter mount with additional lenses to it. It is just that, an attachment. It pops on, doesn’t screw, on which became a huge problem for me when filming this past weekend. It constantly became loose or slipped off a few times, I’m glad I caught them and nothing broke. I understand it is most likely only designed for the weight of only one ND/Variable ND/Filter at a single time. While I’m stacking glass along with my VND filter, so the weight was way too much for the mount which does not screw on. I apply a +2 Diopter, a 1/4 black Pro mist filter and then my Gobe VND Filter. Upon purchasing the Beastgrip 3x Tele, I also picked up a step up right to transition along with my regular filters which does actually screw on, which is the feature I need. Sorry for the long reply 😅
updated: geni.us/ZgAFOXb If it doesn't work, you can search 65mm smartphone lens and scroll a bit, you should find one. They are branded by various companies.
Hello, can you takes full size pictures of the same wall to see the quality in the angle of the picture? (By moving the photo to have the same angle of vision) A portrait in video cannot be enough. This lens have in general big problem of chromatic aberation, angle blur, and no sharp at all.
Both seem to have good rectilinear results, unless it’s from the phone computations. But otherwise it’s hard to tell as your pictures had the subject right in the middle with most of the frame out of focus, so it’s impossible to see what the edge to edge quality is. I’d like to see an update with newer cameras.
Sir, speaking of the cage itself or any 37mm thread adapter for that matter, have you tried lenses that are not specifically designed for smartphones? I don't know what to expect since smartphone cameras are usually wide so perhaps there could be vignetting issues with, say a 37mm tele. I'm on a quest finding an affordable Tele lens with ability to mount nd filters on top. Not sure why only the more expensive smartphone lenses are designed with such considerations
I thought the bokeh transition was smoother and clearer with the beast grip in the first flower comparison but the second I click the see a difference. But in the close ups your skin tones seemed clearer with the beast grip. Would that be due to the change of lightning?
I think the bigger lens, the Beastgrip reduces the light a little more than the Ulanzi, so I'm guessing it darkens the skin tone perhaps. All the footage of me should be roughly the same light
so let’s bottom line this. Putting price aside, and having the two lenses to choose from, and having the beastcage with interchangeable mounts for the Iphone 11 pro max, which lens would you personally refer to shoot with, the 65mm Ulanzi or the Beastgrip 3x?
Mobile Motion I have the beastgrip and my friend has a zecti. I like the Zecti better. Too bad the stopped making it. I also have the beastgrip cage for the iphone 11 pro max which is a beautiful cage. I also have the moemnt 58mm and by using it with tele built in lens it gives me about a 4x. Nice review on the the two lenses. If I was going to opt for one of them I think it would be the Ulanzi.
Hi, how do you find Ulanzi 65mm on your new Note 20 Ultra? Because I have some thoughts of 1/1.33 sensor and how it copes with it.. Would be great to know, thanks!
Hello, can you help me? I just take photos, mostly landscape and portraits. I have an iPhone 14 Pro. In case of portraits I might have an easier job, the 14 Pro offers me 77mms and I need about 23mms more to shoot faces and some bit more to catch the eyes. In case of landscape photos, I need about 300-400 mms. This is a big jump from 77. Can someone offer me a proper external lens for the best photos possible? In case of the portrait tele lens I need the minimum focal distance too.
A very good and informative video! I already use the Ulanzi, and have to agree with you about the value and quality. Interestingly, if I want even more magnification, I use it in front of the inbuilt tele lens on my iPhone 11 Pro Max. It's very good, but I am wondering if the Beastgrip lens night be even better at these magnifications, due to better glass...
Thank you Robin! Thanks for the comment. Would be interested to see what results you get with the 2 teles combined. I'm holding out for the iPhone 12 (or whatever it may be called) and presuming it has a tele included, I'll be able to test it then with the Beastgrip
Mobile Motion I certainly will keep you updated. Just ordered it now from Amazon UK. Only £180, which is a lot cheaper than getting it from Beastgrip direct. This price already includes import tax!
Im sure a 3d printer could fabricate it in a way to make the ulanzi go on the beast grip and then you have both of worlds together rich and poor hand in hand lmao!!!
I forgot to mention that the Beastgrip has a thread to mount a 58mm filter whereas the Ulanzi can't mount any filters directly
Hello Mobile Motion, is there an option to attach ND filters on the Ulanzi 65mm lense??
@@klhonestguide6937 nope
@@klhonestguide6937 just my two cents…I’ve made my own filters for my iPhone camera and it helps
@@GuanRytheFantastic do you mean attaching a filter to the ulanzi (or any lens without threading)? How do you pull that off?

I love my ulanzi lens. Regarding a filter mount, I made my own out of black foam board, it works fine.
I attached mine to a Dreamgrip Pro cage that comes with a filter adapter and I added a step up/step down ring and use filters.

Does the Ulanzi lens have a 17mm thread mount?
This would be a good thing for tablet owners, if the attaching clip was longer. Many tablets require a 60-70mm reach to the camera lens.
Exactly what I was looking for!
Could such lenses also be mounted on a camera with C Mount on it?
