Why No Freeze Drying Videos? Transforming Minivan for Camping - Update Before Part 3

  • I've been spending my useful hours working on transforming our minivan (2015 Toyota Sienna) for going camping. I've been planning to start this project for a couple years now; things just keep getting in the way. Of course we will be taking and using a lot of freeze dried food that we have made over the years.
I do have have 3 other videos part way edited. Mini marshmallows at 100º vs 130º, a red bean test I started back in November, and a longer version of the Part 3 van video for the other channel.

Before buying a freeze dryer, perhaps research to find out more about the downside of the machine; some people have problems with their machine and it's big and heavy and hard to return!
When trying to decide what to freeze dry you can start by asking why.
Start by asking yourself this question. Why are you freeze drying food? Knowing this should help you decide what you should freeze dry first.
    I'm freeze drying because:
    Just to freeze dry leftovers?
You want to make your own food for camping/backpacking?
    For if/when the SHTF?
    For a short term emergency?
You have your own garden and want to freeze dry the food?
You love Costco but don't have a family of 6?
You are good at finding the food sales but only have 1 freezer?
When you cook homemade chili just for yourself you make 10 gallons? Because you have 3 full freezers and are worried about power outages?
If I knew then what I know now, I would have freeze dried things in a different order. Or maybe not, because I started freeze drying because we had 3 full freezers, I was thinking of getting another one, and I decided I should buy a walk-in freezer instead. I started looking into walk-ins and realized they were expensive to buy (even used ones) AND expensive to own and operate. Then I found out Harvest Right was making home sized freeze dryers. One of my first thoughts was "I like Mountain House!" I have used their food for backpacking almost 45 years and we even kept some in our travel trailer, for just in case.
Freeze dried food will stay fresh for many years and be ready and waiting when you need it.
We do videos showing how we are using our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to freeze dry food for long term storage. (We have the medium size machine that we got in August of 2017) We talk about how to load and unload the freeze dryer, how to know if the food is dry, is it better to freeze dry raw food or cooked food, and do a few taste tests. Freeze dried food is also great for prepping or just for camping and snacking!

Thanks! I can't wait to go camping again.
Mostly I'll be putting the van and camping videos on the other channel (SchoolReports - On The Go) so I don't annoy the people here who only are interested in the freeze drying related videos. 😁

Thank you for making this video. Your video is the closest to what I’ve had in my head. Please continue to share, please. I look forward to see the progress. Blessings 🙏🏽✨

Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I'll be putting most of the van videos up on the second channel - SchoolReports - On The Go www.youtube.com/@SchoolReportsOnTheGo/videos 🤣 When I put non freeze dried videos on this channel I often have some people unsubscribe! I have just about finished editing the full Part 3 video showing how I got to where this recap video ends.

I searched for parts 1 and 2 and could not find. Very clever use of the middle-row seat trolleys.

I did give it a thought in passing before I started, but I didn't really look into it. As I go along I'll keep track of the weights, but right now everything we "know" we're putting in weighs less than the seats we took out. (But I do know from when we had our travel trailer, that weight creep is a real thing:) It's one of the reasons I decided to go with just 1/2" ply. A 4x8 sheet of the plywood weighs less than the lightest seat! Those 3rd row seats were over 110 lbs, and I think the middle row seats were heavier.

Hi I am just about to purchase a freeze dryer and you were recommended to me to watch x I have sat for hours watching videos ( I have a sweet shop so will be freeze drying candy / ice cream ) I’m from the uk . With all your knowledge what videos do you think I should watch before I start ( I am buying a medium sized harvest right machine ) any tips and tricks would be really appreciated

First, freeze drying ice cream is _way_ different than freeze drying candy. It's much more important to make sure the ice cream is _very_ cold before letting the vacuum and heating start.
(My older videos leave out a lot of detail) I'd be happy to try to answer any questions I can about the process.
Here are a few to start with. (I didn't know what you've already seen)
      Ice Cream:
Freeze Drying Scoops of Ice Cream - 4 Flavors - ua-cam.com/video/wq7Xz8xfPsY/v-deo.htmlsi=-neIyQI5AcZEG_gM (Check the pinned comments)

      Candy:
Batch 590 (Plus 4 More) Freeze Drying 5 Batches of Candy - ua-cam.com/video/Z0N0pXaQo6U/v-deo.htmlsi=nDwZZJ0oRN6_0N6o
Freeze Drying Skittles in The Bags - ua-cam.com/video/irM5e-vP0uc/v-deo.htmlsi=lMRPHdjM9BFev6U2
      Freeze Drying - The Next 50 Batches - Batch 559 - Bit-O-Honey candy - ua-cam.com/video/IiQGXg39tLQ/v-deo.htmlsi=bS1QHDupiVDTZu07
      Freeze Drying - The Next 50 Batches - Batches 564 & 565 - Candy for #1 Child, Misc. Kinds - ua-cam.com/video/27l22IJO6Sk/v-deo.htmlsi=QFycvizypgWCp99Q
      Katie's Gummi Bears @ 120 x speed - ua-cam.com/video/Gj_TKSBpvmY/v-deo.htmlsi=2odRZagCfFCR2TTa
Settings For Doing Candy 2017 Machine - ua-cam.com/video/T9ohV2sC2iU/v-deo.htmlsi=mHejemWAmuypIq6_
Most important of all is that the machines (no matter what you may hear) can NOT know when all the moisture has been removed. It's our job to confirm it's actually done.
Of course I would do some/most of the handling and processes differently if I were doing it for commercial use. (I worked 20+ years for a gourmet fruit & bakery company)

Neat, will the bed be level?

    • @SchoolReports

No. Assuming being parked on level ground, the head will be higher by 3 1/2 inches. 😁 For me this is still not enough, but I can work with it.

One of those small fridge will dump some heat in the van won't it? I would think one of those 12v coolers would work well

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  2 місяці тому +1

Good catch! All refrigeration units are just heat pumps, they move the heat out of the inside of the fridge or cooler to the outside. (There's no free lunch!) Assuming the same efficiency, they are all going to dump the exact same amount of heat into the space. That's one of the big reasons we are still considering just using a ice chest. That way the heat is made somewhere else when the ice is made. If we use any kind of cooling unit (120v fridge, 12 volt fridge, or 12 cooler) we plan to encase it and add some kind of exhaust fan to push the heat outside.

Interesting stuff. We tried "camping" a couple of times, and it always seemed like we preferred bug free zones and a cool breeze. We also tried an RV on a trip to Florida... we weren't thrilled with all the rules that different places have for RVs. After all the calculations we decided it wasn't really worth all the hassle and the cost of gas was practically the cost of a room.
However, a small camping van would be pretty reasonable. So as far as the couch goes.. you are just planning to use that for seating when the van is not moving?

When we had a travel trailer (2720QS Trailmanor pulled with our minivan) and went camping with the kids, most of the time we were boondocking. I'm planning/hoping to make it back to one of my favorites - the Sunstone Public Collection Area, north of Plush Oregon - 42.72329948170522, -119.8603025711538 (Free)
When we were at campgrounds, it was at inexpensive ones. (Probably always under $30) One of our favorites was Humbug Mountain State Park, OR or Whiskey Springs & Fourbit Ford Campground. (We went to those 4 places a bunch of times)
Only for use when not moving!

@@marcfruchtman9473 I've spent most my life very near to Rogue River at west edge of Greater Idaho! 😇 (or the upper-middle of the State of Jefferson) I've done a combination of whitewater rafting, jet ski, and on jet boat tours up and down the river from Lost Creek to the ocean a number of times. (140+ miles of the river)
But it's the only river I've really ever been on; it would be fun to see other ones.
