  • Lance, George, JB, and Johan break down the looming storylines for the upcoming road racing 2024 season, focusing on the Classics, Grand Tours, Olympics, and World Championships. In addition to speculation about the expected battle of the sport’s top GC stars, Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič, and Remco Evenepoel at the Tour, the crew touches on the other hotly anticipated narratives, like Wout Van Aert’s altered Classics schedule and expectations, Primoz Roglic being the potential darkhorse favorite for the Tour de France, how Red Bull entering the team ownership market at Bora-Hansgrohe could affect the entire sport, Tom Pidcock’s ambitious Olympic and Tour de France GC goals, and much, much more.

    Giro - Pogman, TDF - Vingegaard, Vuelta - Uijtdebroeks(Hot take)
    MSR-Pidcock, Flanders-MVDP, Paris Roubaix-Mads Pedersen, LBL-Skjelmose, Lombardia-Roglic
    The Vuelta might be up easy for grabs bc of the worlds and olympics. Uijtdebroeks is already a top gc rider, but i think he can take a step up, like others have done on LAB. It's a longshot I know, but thats what makes it fun.
    Vingo and Pog is just another level above Roglic and Remco in a GT, i dont think it'll be close in TDF. I wonder if anyone will underestimate Vingo on a TT-bike again?
    Cant wait for the season the start proper. So many stars on different teams, we are in a golden age of cycling:) Love this sport!

    DIfference between Vingo and Pogman. When Vingo has a bad day, he might lose some seconds. When Pog is "gone and dead" he loses minutes. Pog needs to pull together a 3 week effort with no bad days to compete with Vingo, that could be a fun tour to watch. Imagine it being close like within a minute and it coming down to the TT in NICE! Could be EPIC!

    As for MvdP and Van Aert...Van Aert is incredible. An absolute monster on the bike. BUT, MvdP's back injury is what allowed Van Aert to shine over him for a year and half or so outside of the TDF. When Van Aert was winning everything in CC last year, MvdP was still building up and when he out muscled Van Aert to the line by a very safe margin in the 2023 World's, that showed just how strong MvdP had become. Ever since he's unstoppable...except for when he runs into a pole. I do 100% believe the birth of Van Aert's child has slowed or softened him. He's distracted and rightfully so. Having a child is 1000% more important than the bike. I do hope he gets back to that killer mindset as him a MvdP's rivalry have made cycling incredible to watch.

      Wout has had a very different winter than the previous ones, so his preperation is different. All their life, not just 1,5 yrs with back pain, WvA and MvdP have been very close. MvdP is clearly better no matter what in cyclocross, but on the road it is not so clear at all. Me as a Dutchman (may be) hope that Wout will have bridged the gap to MvdP, a small gap but also a significant one. It was decisive. Let's see how in Flanders WvA will manage to keep up on the steep climbs and then draw conclusions.

    Armstrong hits the nail on the head (@9:00) concerning Red Bull's involvement with the Bora-hansgrohe team. It's always a challenge to predict what will occur, but it looks like Red Bull anticipates 2024 primarily as a restructuring year with the goal of TdF victory in 2025. That doesn't mean Red Bull will just sit idle. In the interim, Red Bull's marketing arm, Red Bull Media House, will be working its magic in the buildup to this year's TdF - just in case Roglic wins - and will also be looking to convert fans from Formula 1 and other Red Bull sports. For the Bora-hansgrohe team, actual sponsorship monies probably matter less than Red Bull's involvement which brings star power, media clout, and legitimacy. Red Bull's ability to leverage sports events, teams, and athletes is unparalleled.

      "Tour : Roglic, Vingegaard, Evenepoel". That's a big call, Pogacar, not even on the podium? Swap in Pogacar for Roglic and that would be my prediction, with Roglic 4th or 5th.

    • @swissbiggy
      @swissbiggy 4 місяці тому

      @@bevillenz I do indeed not expect Pogacar on the podium in the Tour the France, and I do have quite a few reasons for it.
      The first big race Tadej would like to win this season is Milan-San Remo which takes place in March, the second highlight of his season should be the Giro in May. After that he wants to compete for a podium in the Tour in July, and after that he will go to the Olympics, Worlds, Lombardia etc etc etc...
      It means that by the time the Tour is there he wants to be in perfect shape for a third time in five months time. Sorry I do not see that happen, at least not at the level that he can compete with Vingegaard, Roglic and maybe even Evenepoel for a podium finish.
      Another very important (Maybe even far more important) point is the weather in Italy in May. I do not know if you can remember the last few editions of the Giro d'Italia ? In this last edition we did have a few stages in which riders just stopped to put on extra cloths, it was so cold that they could not even move their fingers anymore and put on cloths while riding the bike. (Which normaly is no issue at all.).
      I am just trying to make clear that such weather does have a long term effect on the body, certainly if it is your intention to win that particular Grand Tour.
      And yes you are correct if you would tell me that we can't predict the weather 100% sure. But we all know that it is just bloody cold in the mountains at that time of year.... It is also one of the reasons why the combination of Giro and Tour (And doing this successfull.) is so damn difficult.
      Can be that Tadej does surprise us, but I don't expect him to be at the same level as Roglic and Vingegaard in the Tour. That's the nice thing about cycling, we all have our different expectations and hopes. But in a normal world Vingegaard will destroy Pogacar for a third time in a row , he's just better and stronger in three week races. In classics it is a complete other story, but in a three week race Jonas just has more endurance......
      Which is in my opinion the reason that Pogacar does ride the Giro. He and UAE do know that he can normaly not beat Vingegaard in the Tour, and UAE will not accept a third season in a row without Grand Tour win. ✌

    • @81caasi
      @81caasi 4 місяці тому

      @@swissbiggy I agree Pog has a lot on his plate before the Tour, and for any other rider they'd be compromised for the Tour. BUT, it is well documented Pog has recovery abilities unlike other riders (which is the reason he can ride a very long season and succeed), therefor a Giro/Tour is not too much for him(baring misfortune with an accident or the weather(?))
      Next, we cannot predict Pog performance at this year's Tour on last year's performance. His training leading up to the Tour was compromised by his not insignificant wrist injury, and it has been acknowledged this affected his top potential performance.
      Also, we cannot underestimate the strength in team work Vin benefited from Jumbo in isolating Pog, with no other competition! This year, the unparalled super-domestique Roglic will not be there to help him, and instead will be a very strong competitor, along with Remco (who's not at the same level however) and will all-together be taking jabs at each other. Vin will have to work harder, AND be tactically more savvy (which Pog is very good at) to move ahead.
      I'd agree that Vin was very impressive at last year's Tour in climbing and TT performance, however, considering the reasons I listed it doesn't translate to a superior performance repeating itself in 2024. How the GC favorites perform this year are a great unknown, thanks to the many new dynamics being introduced to the playing field. To say Vin is the odds-on favorite against Pog is misleading, I'd match their chances at 50/50.
      Add-on the Roglic factor, who's only been improving in the past couple years(regardless of age) and is tactically better than Pog and Vin;
      who's re-invigorated with a new strong team backed by $$ and support; and who's never gotten a chance recently to go head-to head with the other big two, we can be promised a fierce and close battle for TDF 2024.

    That you mentioned Van Barle and Mohoric before Mads Pedersen in the classics baffles me, not only because im danish, which means im of course biased. But still from an objective prospective. Van Barle and Mohoric did not make top 5 in most of the spring classics and the wc like Pedersen did last year. I predict that Mads P will win a spring monument this year or the wc(again). And Jonas will do the double in 2024(tour and Vuelta), should have made it last year, but made the biggest gift in cycling history to Sep Kuss. Pogi has obviously realized that he cannot beat Jonas in the tour and will want to expand his palmares with the giro. (pogis year program for the year came first and he was to do Tirrano but when Jonas program came out and he announced he(Jonas) would do Tirrano, Pogi quickly withdraw from Tirrano) When Jonas with minutes ahead of Pogi wins again this years tour, the next year talk will be if Pogi just focus on the tour will he then be able to beat Jonas. This I hope will be the case in 2025 with Pogi and Jonas both full focus on the tour to finally have the in my opinion final conclusion. As long as the tour had big mountains or hilly ITT in the 3rd week Pogi will never beat Jonas with both of them in best conditions. but people are with good reason so focused on Pogi since he is the most talented raider since Mercx, that people forget that Jonas in my opinion is probable the potentially best GT raider in history. But then again im danish so of course biased

    • @jaysimoes3705
      @jaysimoes3705 4 місяці тому

      I am not so sure that Pogacar is more talented Hinault. Hinault won 5 TdF, 3 giro and 2 spains, He also won WC, Gent Wevelgem, Paris Roubaix, Amstel Gold, Lombardia 2 times and LBL 2 times....Pogacar has lot of winning to do to beat that, but he is young. Could do it...But at age 25 Hinault won Spain, Giro and three times TdF. He also won 2 LBL, Lombardia, Fleche Wallone and already was World Champion too.
      Jonas is 27 now. By that time, Hinault had won: 4 times TdF, 2 times Giro and 1 time Spain. So also Jonas is well behind Hinault at the same age.
      Merckx...age 27...4 times TdF, 4 times Giro. Jonas again is not even remotely close to that. Do note that he won all that while also already winning MIlan San Remo 5 times (!!), Gent Wevelgem 3 times, Paris Roubaix 3 times, LBL 4 times, Lombardia 2 times and WChampionship 2 times. What if he would have only prepared himself for the grandtours, like Jonas is doing?
      Okey Merckx was before my time, but when you look at what the guy did he is absolutely and by far the best rider of all times and no in this day and age can match him. The second is a guy I did see in the second part of his carreer and that was Hinault who is a bit like an Eddy Merckx Light. No one in this day matches him either to my mind. But Pogacar could do it over his carreer, but I do not see him win as many Tours and Classics as Hinault did. It is either this or that I am afraid. Jonas and Pogacar are a bit like Hinault and Fignon or Hinault and Zoetemelk.

    T de F 2024.
    At what point in 2023 was Roglic at the Vingegaard/ Pogacar Tour level? He won many races by smarts. Giro for Pog - unsure for le tour. If his legs are gone then seeing him race as a foyle for Ayuso… Roglic is strong but missed his opportunity in 2020. I’m not a top fan but Vingegaard/Jumbo will get those kilajoules in on the bigger turbos of the other three competitors and Remco Roglic will fade with Pog over cooked from May efforts. Vin to run out a handy winner by 3 - 4mins on Le Tour. It’s not going to be that close😕

    Belgian press cannot be so hard on Remco because he keeps winning big races. But had Remco not make the come back he did after his offday in the 2023 Vuelta, they would have been all over him. For Wout they are harder because, he had two years with less big wins than before. But he is heavier than all the other major stars, so unless he puts out crazy watts he cannot beat them. Also Wout is the only one who is a domestique, at least partly. None of the other big stars is even asked to that. So, no one should expect the same results.

      The Belgian press does not like Remco simply because Remco has certain traits many people in fact dislike, like arrogance and ego on full display. Most Europeans in fact find it quite distasteful. Remco, without a doubt no matter what you think of him is one of the supertalents in cycling. He is top 5 best already.

      This was mostly when he just became pro. To say this is now is a huge exaggeration. He remains very ambitious but with what he showed after his off day in the last Vuelta, he won the heart of many cycling fans. There were people who buried him with stupid remarks, like he would never win a grand tour, never learn to descend or sprint or become a puncher etc.. These people are very quiet not but should ashamed of themselves.@@jaysimoes3705

    You are completely forgetting Tao Geoghegan Hart. If Jonas does not crash, get injured or ill, then Tao Geoghegan Hart will finish in 2nd place and Pogacar will finish in 3rd place in the Tour de France

      It would indeed be great if he could return to the same level I think he did have in the Giro 2023, sadly we will never know if he could have won it. But for now let's just wait in what shape he will return this season, he hasn't compete anymore for nine months.

    Remco will not be on the podium. He will have a bad day. One really bad day and lose 20 to 30 mins. And then go stage hunting and win a couple of stages. Top 12

    I always have appreciated Lance’s candid and spot-on comments regarding professional bicycle racing. I must point out, however, that highlighting the Cavendish TdF record-breaking attempt does not fall into the candid and spot-on category. I understand that George is blinded by his friendship with Cav but I expect more from Lance. This “record-breaking attempt” is hardly a highlight of the upcoming season. First of all, you simply cannot compare the TdF records of Eddy Merckx and Cav. Merckx was in a class by himself and could do it all while Cav, on the other hand, was and is a one dimensional racer. Second, Cav, at this stage of his career, will likely not be able to compete against the current and developing sprint specialists. Whether it’s MVDP or Wout starting their sprints from much further out than yesteryear’s sprint specialists or guys like Jasper who are just much faster, it seems highly unlikely that Cav will have much success this year. I bet that if Lance puts aside his friendship with Cav, he would agree. Moreover, if this season’s commentary is going to overly focus on Cav then many of us - and there are lots of us out there - who are not Cav fans will tune out from your commentary. It’s bad enough having to mute the volume every time Eurosport commentators wax poetic about Cav but now many of us will be forced to do the same with The Move. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen!

    Very disappointed the Tour of Colombia wasn't mentioned. George: congratulations on your dinner with M. Cavendish on Sunday, but I was expecting one word about the Tour of Colombia from you. I thought you cared about Colombia. Unfortunately, I'm un-subscribing from the WEDU channel. Before I go: Lance, you're the greatest!
