- This is my review of the Hasselblad XCD 2.5/90V shot on the Hasselblad X2D. I explain everything you need to know about the lens and show lots of sample images under bright light and low light conditions to test the autofocus with face detection speed.
Note: what I forgot to mention is that the lens also has a programmable (via the settings in the camera menu) control ring which I personally prefer to be set to the aperture setting. And the lens also has a switch where you can set whether the programmable control ring has click sounds or is silent but this feature is currently kind of obsolete since the X2D has no video capabilities where you typically want to avoid clicks on a programmable control wheel on the lens.
@14:38 I accidentally say f/2.8 but, as you can see in Lightroom, mean of course f/2.5.

Hi, thanks for such a good video. I'm nor sure if I missed it, but I noticed there is a little physical switch on the body of the lens, in the gap between the focus and the control ring and that switch has two circle symbols that you can toggle between. Any idea what that is and what it does? Happy new year!
Many thanks for the kind feedback. That switch toggles between "clicks on" when turning the programmable control ring and "clicks off" means, silent turning of the control ring. Since I have programmed that control ring to control the aperture setting, I leave the clicks on, sounds a bit like a Leica aperture ring then and I like that sound :)
I just received mine today and noticed some marks (probably oil) on shutter blades. Have you noticed anything like that on yours? I’ve contacted Hasselblad and they are checking if that’s something expected. I’ve checked 55V and 135 XCD lenses - shutter blades are completely clean.

How does face-recognition react when there is more than one face in the scene?
Btw, with the last firmware update all old H-lenses (even those without AF support) now are fully stabilized even with the 0.8 converter.
Watch my previous video just released before this one. Its about the new X2D firmware. Here you find a little test how autofocus switches then between two faces.

As I still own an XCD 3.2/90mm, I will of course have to consider whether a change makes sense. Is there any experience or even a direct comparison?

Thanks. I mention the 1/4000 leaf shutter speed @6:47 since for flash photography this clearly is a great feature :) On your question regarding the older XCD 90: its kind of the same principle as when I quickly compared the new 90 with the 80. Image quality is superb on both lenses. The 90V is the more modern lens, designed specifically for the X2D. But spending a lot of money for an upgrade is not a must in my opinion. On the lens you own, clearly the 90V is a bit wider open with f/2.5 - but will it move the needle in a real life shooting? Probably not.

That's a really good question and honestly in my opinion is a matter of taste. Fuji has really good color science too and a lot of vintage film filters you can use to give images a special film-like look - which is something many Fuji shooters appreciate. For me its simple, I have them both and enjoy shooting with both of them. If I would be forced to decide, a lot of arguments are in favor of the Fuji GFX100 II which clearly is the better camera if you are not totally into the Hasselblad Natural Color Science which then dictates your choice :) Thanks for the positive feedback on my content, much appreciated.

Many thanks :) Yes, I reviewed the Nikon Zf and will post the video soon. Corner sharpness widest open is fine in my opinion on the 90V. Low light autofocus is better with shorter focal length, the 38V for instance is doing better under low light conditions when it comes to autofocus.

Hi Math, just received my XCD 90V. I immediately noticed how much louder the shutter is compared to the 55V. I'm assuming this is due to the more powerful shutter (1/4000) because I can even feel with my hands how much harder it clicks.
Saw one of the reviews on B&H that a person returned the lens back to the store because the store technicians decided it was a defect. Now I'm trying to figure out what a normal shutter should sound like.
What are your thoughts on this?
They went out of stock pretty quick and was able to snatch a new one direct from Hasselblad’s website. I’ll be getting mine tomorrow and will report back how loud it is compared to my XCD 55

Hi Math, I've watched many of your videos and am impressed with your thoroughness and dedication in explaining your observations to your viewers. I recall that you made a previous video about the Leica S3 in which you were impressed with the image quality but, in other respects, you found this DSLR camera rather dated and that you would wait for the potential S4 to see if Leica addressed your concerns. From an image quality perspective, how would you rate the Hasselblad X2D in comparison?
The Hasselblad X2D beats the Leica S3 from every aspect: form & design, image quality, resolution and handling as well as shooting experience. Leica will for sure come up with a much better version of their medium format camera compared to the S3. The S3 is totally outdated and came to market way off too late to seriously join the medium format shooting party :)

Is that at 9:56 only a problem of the 90mm or also of the (new) 55 and 38?
With shorter focal length, autofocus tends to work better under low light conditions. So, for instance, the 38V does better in low light when it comes to autofocus.
How do we remove the lens? Is there a button?
Could you compare this lens with the 'old' 90mm please 🙏🏻

What worried me is the dad pixels on the screen, can you exchange the camera if it has?
You will need to do a pixel correction in such cases.
Which one better image xcd 90 F2. 5 or 80mm F1. 9.. Very confused..
Image quality is at par, both lenses are excellent. The 90V is the more modern lens, specifically designed for the X2D and the 100MP resolution of the X2D sensor. But the 80mm has no issues coping with 100MP resolution. With both lenses you are on the safe side when it comes to image quality.
Hello, I have not tried the 90mm V XCD lens yet. But did you find a work around for the face tracking when wifi-tethering? If so any pointers please. I still love my X2D.
I did not find a workaround yet. I guess its up to Hasselblad to provide an update for the software.
I bought the x1d2… nice camera but i am very disapointed about the non availability of lenses… and no updates like the x2d at all
Agree - the lens portfolio is not super rich like what you would find for a Nikon or Sony camera. But with suitable adapters you get access to legacy Hasselblad lenses, and that's actually great. Maybe worthwhile to try out. There are a couple of videos on my channel on legacy Hasselblad lenses shot with adapter on Hasselblad-X camera bodies.

I really liked the X2D and the 80mm. I must say the sharpness and colors are terrific. That said, I must admit that for some reason most gear lost its mojo for me 😊 So I got rid of the X2D again… but I can see how this is an amazing tool for the professional who gets paid for the job and needs that resolution. Would be keen to see this lens against the slightly longer GF110 and the GF80 😊
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. In a comparison of the X2D with the GFX100 II the outcome will likely be the following: unless you really prefer the Hasselblad Natural Color Science, the Fuji will beat the Hasselblad from all angles except design: resolution (for still scenes you can shoot 400MP with the Fuji), autofocus, speed, handling, customization, functions and features, Electronic View Finder, etc. - in almost every aspect the Fuji is clearly superior. Why do I nevertheless love my Hasselblad? Because I love the look of the images, the colors, the atmosphere of images and, I know this sounds a bit silly, the iconic legacy of Hasselblad as a brand :)

And I can relate... was just scrolling through my archive and I clearly see where my X1D and X2D shots end and and where my Fuji files start (again). I also love the build quality of the Hasselblad bodies and lenses. Why I chose it at that time over the GFX (I tried out all of them except for the original 100) was the lens sizes of the new V lenses especially. They are just terrifically small in contrast to what the GFX line offers. But I know... size again should not be critical if image quality was the only goal. But I need to somehow love my gear to use it more often. And my XH2S gets some love, but it lacks the mojo of even the XPro3, and especially that of a Hasselblad or Leica. Happy new Year! 🙂

I agree with Patrick. Shutter makes quite a clonk compared to 55mm which is almost silent. Initially worried that it may create undesired vibration but images are excellent.
it has 5 stops of vibration control so I doubt the lens shutter will make any difference 👍

I've been using Hasselblad cameras for a long time and always believed their explanation that the slowness of medium format cameras was just a part of the deal, due to large file sizes and specific technology quirks. Then, I got my hands on a Fuji camera and was amazed at how quickly it operated. It made me realize that maybe medium format cameras don't have to be sluggish after all. Switching from Hasselblad to Fuji isn't a straightforward decision, given each has its ups and downs, but this experience was definitely an eye-opener.
Also, about the loud shutter noise on Hasselblads, which I was told was typical for leaf shutters: I found out that's not necessarily the case. I tried a Leica with a leaf shutter lens and was struck by how quiet it was, almost mistaking it for an electronic shutter. It's moments like this that make me really think about the future of Hasselblad. I genuinely love their cameras, but I do worry about what lies ahead if these issues aren't addressed.
Thanks, I think your comment is spot-on. I also love the images I get out of my Hasselblad but if they do not really speed-up in developments, they will become a real niche brand since their technology is just not up to date and their development cycle, also w.r.t. firmware upgrades, is just too slow. A real pity since Hasselblad is not only iconic from a brand perspective but also amazing when it comes to image quality and color science.

They are designed and made by Hasselblad in Sweden. But Hasselblad belongs to DJI so I would not exclude that some parts are made somewhere else :)

That's right, its sometimes all about finding a workaround for filling a gap :) Having said that, I hope Hasselblad issues a software upgrade for Phocus Mobile 2 that fixes the issue.
Got a lend of one of these a few months ago. Generally a great camera and great design, however a few issues…the view on tilting EVF is partially obstructed
The battery life is dismal, for all day sooting, bring three batteries. It isn't the best choice of camera for moving subjects. The autofocus system is slow.
In my view, its home is on a tripod and in a studio.
I have to disagree - the IBIS was a game changer and I use it handheld all the time and on extended trips - great for travel and landscape photography. Sports - not so much.
I actually think the X2D is also great in the field outside of the studio. Since the image stabilization is excellent, you can even shoot long exposures hand-hold as I have shown in a recent video on the X2D. Clearly, studio work is also a home run for the camera but landscape for instance works great with the X2D. People photography also works but you need to get along with the slow autofocus. Sports & action photography you better don't try with the X2D since this is not what this camera is made for :)

I am an amateur photographer since 1965, and I have worked since that time, up to now with many 35mm and and medium format lenses! I must state that I've never missed any rubber weather sealing ring on my lenses! This subject is recently a little bit overused by many lens manufacturers and repeated by the lens users! I am afraid, that the small rubber material will not stay very effective, over an number of years! 🤔
I tend to agree, if the lens sits firmly on the camera's lens mount it will typically withstand some rain without problems. On the X2D though the lenses have a bit play so I appreciate the rubber sealing :)
You are almost a grandfather, if you are amateur in photography so I know nothing, you are probably a legend now after all those years!
An awesome lens. However, for ⅓ the price you can afford a Fuji GF 80mm f/1.7 , and for ½ the price a Fuji GF 110mm f/2. Even if Blad is a very desirable brand, Fuji is much more friendly for me : it saves on the wallet for at least as good results. But I understand the pleasure you can have to use a X2D.

Wie heisst da doch der Spruch - mit vollen Hosen lässt es sich gut stinken! Seit ich fotografiere, werden die Objektive periodisch immer "schärfer", somit wird heute ein Standard erlangt, der "schärfer" ist, wie die "besten Messerklingen aus Solingen"! Wenn man so eine junge Frau mit einer jungfräulichen Gesichtshaut ablichtet, dann ist das wirklich keine große Kunst! Aber sonst müssen Hautunreinheiten leider mit einer guten Kosmetik stark übertüncht werden! Auch sieht man leider kaum Portraits von Frauen in einem reifen Alter, die man leider für die Werbung kaum einsetzt! Darin zeigt sich für mich eher die "Kunst des Fotografen"!
Why you will use a delicate olfa cutter when you can use a real caveman Army knife to open your brand new Hasselblad toy?... just a real jealous comment.
Any decent FF 85/1.2 lens will beat your overpriced xcd hands down

Sony has an excellent 85mm as well as Nikon and other brands. The difference is that these lenses from an image circle perspective are calculated for full frame sensors whereas the Hasselblad 90V is calculated and performs on medium format sensor :)

@@charliebassey2695 Inferior what? My alone RF100-300/2.8 is more expensive than your lens and Hasselblad all together. And it doesn't wiggle in a lens mount like all xcd do.
