    Many of you have commented on the focus position selection. In this video review I demonstrated using the rear screen to select the focus point, which you can also do while looking through the viewfinder. However this isn't the only way to select the focus point, there is a button at the front of the camera that if you hold it allows you to activate the selector and then use the control wheels to move the focus point. My favourite way though is to go into the custom button function and change the back control wheel (which has a press function) and make that the AF selector button and then continue with the control wheels to move it to position. This seems the quickest way so far until hopefully we see AF face tracking arrive.

    • @nth_to_see_here
      @nth_to_see_here 2 роки тому +1

      So in short - you hold the selector. Then you move the wheels, front wheel for left/right, rear wheel for up down. No diagonal of course. And you scroll...two up...three right...now wait...one down...one right. Seems like the fastest way to focus is like using a 1980s Atari :)

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  2 роки тому +3

      @@nth_to_see_here No not quite. You press the back wheel once (that activates the AF selection point) you then roll front and/or back wheel to select where you want the AF point to go. Or you use your left hand and finger and slide it around on the flip screen and drag the AF point where you want it. As mentioned in the video I expect the face/eye tracking feature to be added in a future firmware update, it has been working in prototypes but not yet to a standard they are happy with, when they are happy with it they will add it to the camera via a firmware update. From my point of view I'm glad the camera is released now though as you still have access to a camera that delivers exceptional images.

      @Karl Taylor Don't get me wrong. I am convinced it's a superb camera. A huge upgrade from the X1D and also quite an upgrade from the GFX100s. Unfortunately for many who don't do portraiture or studio, like me e.g. do street (don't care for eye/face tracking and also need to focus quickly and precisely) any focus solutions without a joystick/dpad will be slower. Will test, but pretty sure this is the main reason I'd stay with my GFX100s.
      Of course, one can argue that the X2D is not meant for street. But as I remember, Hasselblads main selling point for the X1D was something along the lines of - finally medium format light and compact enough to take it anywhere with you :)

      @@nth_to_see_here after having the X2D for about a week now, I can already feel that it’s autofocus even with the older 45p hunts no more than my gf45 on my 100s. I was very curious about this myself. Then again, I don’t tend to rely heavily on autofocus even with my zippy gf110 but interesting no less. The touch screen focus works very well. The wheel focus option sounds strange but in use, it’s not worse than my experience with the super sensitive knob on my gfx100s.

    I do appreciate the level of organization of your videos, with chapters, and even more your knowledgeable, clear delivery of information. On this particular video, my only complaint is the seeming lack of coverage of my main interest: color quality and fidelity. (If it is there and I missed, it PLMK--I admit I did not view every minute--tho I did look at all the chapter titles and sampled most.) Also, I must say I'm a bit baffled at your very strong interest in level of physical detail in your fashion photos-- is sharpness and minute detail a dominating factor in compelling, successful beauty and fashion photography? How many skin pores do you want to see?

    The X1D was my favourite camera, save for its numerous shortcomings. The X2D is unquestionably my favourite camera to date. I much prefer the XxD system designs to Fuji GFX-series and anything Hasselblad with digital backs. The Phase One is intriguing, too, but I'd settle for the X2D given an opportunity for price and its superior ergonomics and practicality (plus, it's a beauty of a body!).
    N.B.: One thing, though: it's a great shame it doesn't shoot video. So is the omission of an articulating screen a bit of a bummer. And 5+ fps for stills would do it good as well: no question 5-10fps in 100MP resolution is doable today.

    As being one of the "industry's top photographers" 🤔 why wouldn't you have addressed camera tethering and the X2D's compatibility with an editing software suite? Is it compatible with Capture One Pro the industry standard for the "industry's top photographers" or is its compatibility only with Hassy's software?? I'm thinking the latter. That's a very important detail you left out!

    • @VisualEducationStudio

      There were 3 videos in this review series of the X2D. One of them demonstrates the tethering that can only be done using Phocus software which is the software that comes with any Hasselblad camera. All Hasselblad camera's only tether into Phocus as they always have, they have never been able to tether into Capture One as Phase won't provide the ability to let Hasselblad RAW files work in Capture One.

I started as an apprentice photographer too many years ago and shot exclusively for 18 years on what is still my favorite camera of all time, the Hasselblad 500 series. With the advent of digital I moved to full frame, where I still am, but have been seriously considering the Fujifilm 100s, but maybe I should bite the bullet and get one of these instead... Any chance of a vid comparing the two?

    On the idea of adding video to these cameras, I personally really appreciate that Hasselblad focus on photos.
    I don't have any desire for shooting videos and wish more manufacturers would make cameras just for still photography in the hope that they'd be able to offer them for lower cost by removing video features.

You have put your name and reputation behind X1D, a seriously flawed and overpriced product, lied about its performance, then went silent. You never used X1D in your studio, while you made many other believe it is the camera you go to. Then you watched its price to drop from $10K to $5k within few months of its release. You never thought it was not important to address this issue. You blew it Mr.Taylor. You have no right to advertise X2D as your credibility is long damaged. And here you go again - with X2D. Otherwise, you are just bluffing unsuspected public - not to mention, destroying your hard-earned reputation. And you certainly don't deserve it. You should not offer detailed opinion about a complicated piece of new technology - then recommend it - unless you own it and use it for extended period of time, paid full price for it out of your own pocked, and used it on every day bases in a professional environment. This is a great overview. RE exposure simulation: It's also helpful if mixing flash and ambient light. I've mostly been shooting with Canon's mirrorless system as of late and when shooting outdoors with flash, it's really handy to put your flash in ttl mode, turn on exposure simulation and dial the ambient exposure down to taste (or whatever is desired really), then just take the shot and let the flash ttl normalize the exposure. Canon's ttl system will generally prioritize correctly exposing skin tones and faces/eyes (if you have face/eye detect AF on). It's super handy to very quickly get to an exposure that you can then finesse, and time is money, so that's a plus. I hope they hurry up with the face/eye detect AF, that was a real game changer for me Canon added it to their cameras.

I was skeptical about the performance considering the smaller size sensor, but I am happily surprised to see that it actually outperforms the larger sensor with the right glass. I am sure we wouldn't have seen that with the older glass. Another nice surprise was the high ISO performance, I was expecting more noise from 100 megapixels being crammed into a smaller sensor. This finally looks like a great product from Hasselblad that is much more affordable for those who want to dip their toes in the system.

    This was a good video that really gave allot of good information. I have been shooting with a Sony A7R lll with 42mp for a few years now. and never really ever considered MF cameras because I didn't think the trade off of focusing ability for the slight better image quality made sense for me. but recently I saw a video by Manny Ortiz with the X2D with the face detect firmware update and the new 90V lens. and after watching that video I can't stop thinking about this camera system. the image quality and the colors are really special. which you can also see in this video. but it's a really big investment to switch systems for someone like me who is not a working photographer. so I still haven't decided weather or not I am going to dive in. but it's a really nice camera. and with the new face detect autofocus along with the IBIS I think it's totally usable for glamour or beauty type of shoots which is what I am into. and I also just love the look of the camera.

    Thanks Karl for this video, i was waiting for a proper review since my unit hasn't arrived yet.. ( hopefully soon! ) Whats your feeling about the leaf shutter sync.. every day is more and more difficult if not impossible to find flashes with T0,1 times short enough to actually make the most out of it.. even finding triggers ( still using the old profoto as they are the fastest i tested ). I mean it was difficult enough to get flashes that had fast full power times back when we used phase one cameras with 1600th of a second sync, but at 4000? i don't think there is any flash or trigger that can cope with that.. at least not at full power. Of course it's still MUCH better than HSS or Hyper Sync but i fear the flash industry forgot about us leaf shutters with all the flashes coming at 1/320 speeds at full power nowadays in the best case.

      Hi Kube, thank you. Yes that's a very good point: on my H6 I get a cut of point of about 1/750th when strange things start happening to my flash on full power because the duration of the flash at high power is often around 1/1000th on my broncolor lights, and then if the sync isn't exact you may loose half a stop or more. At lower powers I haven't noticed it. Sometimes I've just added more lights to compensate and then managed to get away with even higher sync speeds. Who knows what light manufacturers will do going forwards.

    I’m surprised at your mishandling of “diffraction”. You spoke as if the sensor and the sensor alone determines how diffraction occurs as well as making excessive mentioning of BSI as if that’s related.
    You’re typically precise with your word selection and adamant about understanding the fundamentals so as to not be misled be wordplay, but word play it is in this video.

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  2 роки тому

      I mentioned that the key cause of diffraction is a smaller aperture, which of course is the first opaque obstacle that light encounters, however I do consider the precision of the lenses, the aperture, leaf shutter, glass etc all to have an impact on that which is why I mentioned lenses. Finally I spoke about the back illuminated sensor and that smaller photo-sites would ordinarily be a greater concern for increased diffraction but that I was surprised not to see that. The physics at the sensor level is a bit above my pay grade but I would imagine the micro-lenses and unimpeded entry of light to the photodiode substrate to be an advantage. That was my opinion and I put it into the words I felt most appropriate for the review. Of course I'm not a physicist and if you have a greater understanding of why the results were achieved I would be very pleased to hear and understand them.

    Diffraction is the physical limit of resolution. For the same sensor size, it does not depend on lens design. Diffraction at f/16 should be less on the larger H6 sensor, compared to the X2D sensor. So the difference in resolution/acuity at f/16 is not due to diffraction, but to lens or sensor design and manufacturing.

    Mirrorless. No thanks. And since when do wedding photographers and street photographers use Hasselblad cameras. Are you serious? A very niche market for these cameras and they are certainly not wedding/street shooters. No real time buttons or dials, you have to access the settings via a menu. What a nightmare of a camera. This camera has one use and that is shooting commercially in a studio .

    Hi Karl, very accurate and nice review. I see another negative point: The LCD . Why don't give the possibility to swivel the lcd to use in portrait format ( it's something that was available before, the sony 7c has also this), and revive the Hasseblad shooting experience. Because this was always one of the special things of hasselblad that you look from the top which gives another perspective plus the possibility to dialogue with the subject. And lets be honest, most of the portraits are taken in portrait format or 1x1.

    It seems like the electronics portion is make either by Panasonic or Sony with a Sony sensor for sure. Swedish is bad in micro-electronics that no way a smaller camera manufacturer can come up with such an electronics marvel. Panasonic is already making the Leica mirrorless cameras and they shared the same lenses. Sony is basically having a monopoly now on the sensor technology.

    It is surprising that diffraction starts somewhere between f/11 and f/16. 100 megapixels are 60 megapixels, if you crop it to full frame. A 60 megapixel full frame camera already shows diffraction somewhere around f/5.6.

      You have to factor in magnification and its bearing on DOF, the larger physical sensor size dictates a different focal length too. There are many variables but the larger sensor delivers more tonal range as light is spread over a wider area.

It would be unfair of me to give you a recommendation as I'm an ambassador for Hasselblad and I use the X2D myself and think it is the best camera I've ever used in terms of image quality but I've never used the Leica M11 so it would not be appropriate for me to give you a recommendation having never used the Leica.

      Ha yes that's kind of funny and true. I used to love having an aperture ring back on my old Canon FD lenses with only manual focus. In Hasselblad's defence though the ring can be also programmed as ISO, shutter speeds or aperture so I'd rather have it than not.

    2:32 there was a long debate on one of the forums that technically 16bit is indistinguishable from 14bit. Can’t remember the maths but it sounded logical.
    I think it was that the compression ends up being 14bit anyway so it’s just a marketing gimmick.

    • @VisualEducationStudio

      Yes that's logical and some cameras are actually 14bit but then interpolate the image file into 16bit for the raw file.

    📷If they didn't tremendously speed up the sensor read out, then I see no reason to upgrade to this camera. X1D2 has horrible rolling shutter, and it's only 50 Megpixels! This camera has twice as many pixels, which might mean twice as much rolling shutter!!! You didn't mention rolling shutter. Did you omit those shots?
    🔍the images from this camera probably seems 'sharper' than the X1Dii bcz new lenses have an enhanced optical design. But that doesn't mean they are better. Sharpness isn't what makes a good image. I'd be interesting in seeing pics from this camera next to an X1D2, bcz smaller photo sites will always have a higher signal to noise and therefore less dynamic range and color fidelity.
    🃏The H6 still has a few tricks up it's sleeve, bcz the sensor is larger and on wider lenses you will get a larger field view, and larger use of image circle which is important for certain types of shots. You probably live on the medium to tele lenses bcz of your work so it might be hard to see the differences. Ofc the H6 with the larger sensor will also have better out of focus areas. And H6 might still have better dynamic range which you didn't test, or didn't show.
    Great shots none the less.
    Cheers!

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Peter, the mechanical shutter is in the lenses on Hasselblads as it uses a leaf shutter system. This also allows it to achieve flash sync at any shutter speed even up to 1/4000th of a second on the new 90mm lens. The leaf shutter in each lens is one of the reasons that the lenses are more expensive.
