00:00 Introduction
In a world of luxury brands, Hermes is certainly one of those iconic ones that boots prices to match. For men, they’re famous for their neckties which can be seen on Wall Street bankers and
Russian Oligarchs alike. While Hermes ties are known for their vibrant colors and printed patterns, the Hermes belt is even a bolder statement because of the big H buckle logo. It is an instantly recognizable product with retail prices of $800 and more - it has become a very popular status symbol. So if you Google the term Hermes belt, one of the first questions that will pop up is “are Hermes belts tacky?” By the way, it’s pronounced air-mez because of the accon and not her-mis or anything else.

i guess Im randomly asking but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb forgot my account password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
@Orion Henrik Instablaster =)
@Ethan Maximus I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
your name font is annoying
After a stressful day I love to watch the Gentleman’s Gazette. Thank you guys for all the work
Not going to spend that kind of money to advertise someone else's business.
He can also advertise his own belts, But Raphael does not over hype his products :)
They should be paying you to advertise for them.
This should include sports teams, soft drink companies, and other businesses. I would give a pass to charitable organizations.
Exactly! Are we working for the brand or is the brand working for us?
Der Genussphilosoph Loro Piana though. Very very nice
@Der Genussphilosoph My favorite are people, who leave the sleeve tags on their suit jackets and the brand stickers on their eyeglasses. Classy!
He didn’t mention that while you can buy straps alone, you CANNOT buy the buckle without purchasing a strap. I swear every time I go in an Hermes store there is a customer absolutely fuming at a sales person over this since clearly they planned to buy the buckle and put it on a knockoff strap. This alone says enough about the belt itself and many of the people who wear it.
This channel is so underrated it should be at the level of alpha m or teaching men’s fashion
As much as I love this channel, I don't want it to get that big. Gentlemen only; no riff raff!
Facts
Alpha m is so cringe tho
@@nickmagma7745 a short angry man who's too boring to look good in boat shoes
Those guys are tacky, I stopped following then
Expertly done. You can see the hours of research that went into this nearly half-hour presentation! Thanks for the excellent effort.
So much money to be a walking advertising
if you are wearing a Hermes belt you most likely will never come across anyone who know what it is ,sometimes people buy stuff just cause they think it looks cool not because of the status ,like cars BMW Mercedes Lexus Audi Ferrari some people wouldn't even know that it is a expensive car they just know that it looks Awesome like my girlfriend I said what do you think of that car she said it looks cool I asked her how much do you think it cost she said 60k it was a 200k Ferrari ,you point out a Ford or toyota or Chevy they will say Meh for some reason all the cool stuff is expensive and all the cheap stuff don't look as good
Hermes quality is exquisite. You can always choose a different buckle, not the H one.
I also like Fort Belvedere stuff, but I think you advertise it a bit too much in the videos lately.
You can get hand crafted belts, 10x the quality for a fraction of the price of one of these. You're not paying for quality with this product, you're paying for a logo
@@jamesw9873 or, you can get what you want(whatever that is), and let people with no life worry about things like that.
James W hahaha says someone who never own any hermes. Their quality is second to none
Niel Wong I mean that’s simply not true is it? I’m not saying they’re poor quality, but you can find better for far less. As I said, paying for a logo
He def pushed FB a bit too much imo
The most thorough channel on UA-cam. Unreal quality.
Raphael kissing the H beltbuckle made my day. And apart from all the humor Raphael showed his expertise and all the thought going into his products!
Please keep up the excellent work.
Absolutely agree that turned edge looks nice but after some time when your turned edges got damaged it’s more difficult to restore them. On the other hand when edge painted edges got damaged it’s way easier to restore them. Of course I’m speaking about quality made goods
Finally an “is it worth it” video! These videos are so helpful. Keep them coming, Raphael.
My two best belts are from an ebay seller who sells amish leather goods. They are made from 10 ounce english bridle leather. 1 1/4 inch width, they are one solid piece of leather. They are $34+ shipping and I've never handled a better belt. I bought two ten years ago, one in black and one in oxblood. The oxblood one had faded in colour and wasn't as sharp as it once was. So I dyed it chocolate brown and and bought a new one. The black one is still just fine.
Quality wise save for the buckle (which I can change out and have at times) these are probably of a higher standard that what I'm seeing with Hermes, at least with raw materials. Either way I wouldn't trade a hermes belt for my amish made belt, unless I knew I could flip the hermes for a reasonable price.
This video was informative and hilarious.
"Im rich, i can afford this! Look at me!"
That impression was on point 🤣🤣🤣 it killed me haha
Excellent video, rarely i watch videos from the beginning to the end but this is an exception!
The best thing, that can happen: Gentleman's gazette uploaded new video. Perfect for chilling.😁😁
Forget men's fashion, I'm a lady and I always come here for pointers. I think all his tips and tricks can apply to people in general. I absolutely love his work because he's honest and authentic
Yeah, I'd say it's tacky to wear a big bold status symbol as the "H" belt seems to be. When my mother was a girl in the 1940's, they used to purchase clothing, bring it home and immediately cut out the name tags - even though they weren't visible when wearing the blouse. That's how much it was considered 'tacky' to have someone else's name on your person - even if others couldn't see it! Thanks for the great info.
Thanks for sharing, not to be too rose coloured glasses about the past but just speaking about aesthetics the overall level of taste was simply higher. The other day I bought some socks by Pringle which is a renown Scottish brand. I was convinced the logo on the side would be hidden when wearing a shoe. Nope! The logo pops out over the top of the shoe. Disappointing. Visible logos really are one of the worst aspects of current fashion. To have people buy the stuff voluntarily is one of the biggest tricks marketers ever pulled.
@@momotheelder7124 Oh, don't even get me started about how much better clothes were in the '40's! The materials, the workmanship.... thank goodness my mom saved some of her great suits - that I went on to wear myself for years and years! And, they were the best items of clothing i ever owned.
@@bonitaderosa3134 I buy vintage suits from the 40s and 50s myself. They feel like suits of armour! There is something reassuring about the way they feel when worn.
People where also fighting world wars in the 1940s and doing all sorts of other unsavory things. The personal taste of your mom 80 years ago is a relevant rule for fashion exactly why? Your anecdote is ridiculous when you attempt to use it to diminish current fashion choices just because "it's not how it was done at some point before".
@@user-iu1ru1qz7uI think we are talking specifically about style and clothing. What does it have to do the fact life was tough? And do interesting personal anecdotes and personal taste have to be objectively proven to apply everywhere and at all times to meet your standards?
My last name starts with an 'H', so I could just say it's a monogram...
I have a few Hermes ties and like them very much.
Thanks you so much for this video ! I learn so much !
Your videos are wonderful I personally appreciate it 💯👍
The richest Hermes clients buy the belts that don’t scream “This is an Hermes belt!” There are plenty of options available from the company
Ah i didn't realize you knew the richest Hermes clients personally 😂🤦♂️🤡
@@AlexM-fq5nb 😂
The best series on this channel!
I appreciate the end where you describe what brand each item of clothing is as well as the style.
Also appreciate time stamps thanks.
As a leather craftsman I can say that the edges of H belts are not burnished, they are painted. To make it smooth and neat it takes much more time and skill then a folded edge but it last much longer then the second. But! Hermes don’t really care about the edges, their edges look terribly messy and rough, you can see even in the photos in this video. Professional craftsmen make way better quality then Hermes. I do admit that some bag styles are outstanding but most H goods are way overpriced
Good belt brands you recommend?
@@MemoTraininganything but H
Agree. The edges are painted not burnished . Because the leather H use is not veg leather
One thing to note is they now have several buckles to choose from, some more subtle than the H
Interesting! I like symmetrical belt buckles and modular systems so i actually have a knock off H buckle and also a Z buckle that i love to wear. Does anyone know of any other companies or brands that make symmetrical buckles? (asside from Ferragamo).
What a great video creator. A true gentleman
YES , I PURCHASED MY FIRST BELT IN 1991 , STILL LOOK’S LIKE NEW , IT WAS ONLY $ 300 BACK THEN !!!

At the beginning I thought you will advice to buy the product , and I remember one of your old videos about wearing some things with big logos!
So how it can be!?
Thank you for your great work and information.
I remember being on a store (Neiman’s maybe?) in 2003 looking at them. They were only around $300/$400 then. Still not worth it.
Another good alternative is a belt from Alfred Dunhill. Considering it's a sister company to Montblanc under Richemont , I wouldn't be surprised if they get them from the same source.
Your shirt buttoning is on point, I wish all my shirts would stay open like that
Gee that $800 I now don't feel so bad about wanting a $80 Nick's boots belt.
Lol. I always do that. If I ever think I am spending too much, I search for something 10 times the price to make me feel better about my purchase 😂
@@jura_rose Right! LOL I just want a belt that's made out of good leather that'll last for a while. Ironically I have a $7 bill that has outlasted some of my $40 ones.
@@cowboycody8094 Yes buddy. I have found that, sometimes you get what you pay for, but other times you don't! All the best from Ireland brother 🇮🇪👍🏼
@@jura_rose thanks.
I like your sense of humor. 😂 I'm subscribing. 😃
To my eye, it is a logo belt similar to Gucci but at twice the price. I believe logo belts are tacky. The belts I tend to wear most often are Allen Edmonds, which are well made but not reversible. They typically cost between $100-$150. Workmanship and material are excellent. I think they are worth it.
Wonderful video, high quality, and quite educating.
Love this series, more is it worth it please!
Wondering how this reversible leather holds over time. I had a Ferragamo reversible belt that was split in all its length. Threw it away, didnt think at the time that I could have the leather replaced or repaired.
I like the much less flashy buckles like the Roulis. I also have a very ancient round horse head belt buckle from the 80s which I need to get a new blank for. The thing I like about their system is the post. Your belt holes don't wear badly with this system. My Gucci also has the same system and I just find it more comfortable than the strap and buckle closures.
Yay Rafael I missed you haven’t come out on the gentleman’s gazette for a while
Love the “is it worth it” videos. Would you consider doing one on a top-tier designer suit brand (Brioni, Tom Ford, etc)?
Yes! I would love to watch a Brioni suit or tux review.
@@austinartlaw the worst wearing suits I have all came from Brioni, stunning tailoring but fragile
Tom Ford over priced and nothing special.
I just use classic London tailors now.
I do agree about showing off effect completely. The good news is, there are some other variations of this buckle that are less brandy. So, no problem here.
Good stuff keep it up.
I have the 12k gold H belt. With reversible leather Orange and black. I wear it 4 years and its very good quality
On a personal level, I try not to wear anything with a logo on it. It looks chavvy. Just my opinion.
I absolutely agree.
y’all don’t wear nike or adidas as a go to comfy 👀
@@richkidnl9079 sports wear is a different question
If your product is good, you don't need ostentatious branding. But when others do it...
Well... you do not own a lacoste for summer or anything like that for example?
Is your linen shirt from Club Monaco? I think I may have the same one.
Great video!
Heyy can you please do it in Tom Ford, Christian Dior and Salvatore Ferragamo too? I’m having a hard time choosing belts
Do you guys have a European Fort Belvedere site? How does that work if i want to buy something like this from Europe?
Last time is was this early, I still pronounced it "Hermeeeese"!
Thank you gentleman for educating me!
Will Fort Belvedere have different options for belt buckles soon?
After a stressful day at work I love to come home and play with my Hermes belt.
Get friends bro😂
Still looking to know if a montblanc leather belt is worth it. Either in saffiano or regular leather
Another great piece. Thanks Mr. Schneider, keep the good work up!
I've never really understood the fascination of people over logos and brands, I mean, I undestand WHY it happens but I just don't see the point in paying larger sums to basically be a walking advertisement.
Besides I've rarely seen anyone that actually likes the look of it that isn't also obsessed with brands.
Impressive belt but a tad too loud for my liking. Brilliant content as per usual Sven.
Loving that shirt and jacket colour combination
A picture of that belt is in Der Gentleman at pages 144-145. I always wondered what beltstyle it is whether it's some type of clamp buckle or microadjust buckle, didn't know it was proprietary.
At 4:32 you show, it's a belt with holes. Thank you.
No I don't want to wear that. I prefer suspenders for my pants if I can get them. If I have to wear a belt I prefer clamp buckle or microadjust style. The belt buckle belongs on the shoe. Even there, it's got to be a clamp buckle or microadjust style, preferredly. Unfortunately, they probably don't exist and I can't even find monkstrap shoes in shops anywhere. The normal belt buckle belongs on an overcoat.
BTW, that's the wishes the book by Benrhard Roetzel raised in me. I started to want to wear suspenders, the real ones, and monkstraps. And jackets with vents that I don't have to unbutton when I sit down. But all the other folks who comment here always want to dress up, silly.
You mentioned where your belt leather is sourced, but what country are your belts constructed?
People who can afford Hermès aren’t on UA-cam wondering if it’s worth it. They’re also not concerned about showing off because they’re around other people of the same status and similar wealth.
Many people buy expensive fashion items, even though they can't really afford it. Some people purchase such pieces because they believe it will help them climb the social ladder, when they attend various events and meet people. Others are just really interested in fashion and are ready to spend way more than they should on fashion. When criticized, they'll tell you that to them, owning an Hermes belt or Gucci loafers is more important than spending money on travel or some sport.
Yeah there are really different classes of wealth. Depending on where you are, everyone will have Hermes this or YSL that. They won't mind having the H because they like the neckties and the scarves and (*gasp*) the clothing that most people probably don't even know about. Very different than what I think are most people who buy these things, which is to serve as status symbols for status they don't actually have.
I have a silver H belt that cost 300, USD some 20 years ago. I gave it to the wife as it is too flashy for me now. I always wore it with washed jeans to tone it down.
Does anyone know how to actually measure the strap? Mine says it's a 90, but it measures 105 cm. I need a new strap because I'm not as slender as when I bought it new. Mine is authentic, I bought it at the Rodeo Dr store about 1998.
there’s some hermes in this fort belvedere’s advertising 😂😂😂
Why do you say that? Fort Belvedere is only mentioned 254 times in the video 🤣😋
Jokes apart, very nice video
You should make a series of designer belts it’s a very interesting video
Luxury brands are an interesting beast. You can usually get the same or better quality for less but it doesn’t have the chachet as you mentioned. It’s a luxury brand, you pay the so called “luxury tax”. You have to decide if it’s worth it and for most it’s probably not.
Luxury brands also have a “design expertise” that goes along with a focus on quality. Combining creative art, style and trends....Design and status can in fact go hand in hand. Many of these Luxe brands have decades and decades of design and brand building and their quality reputations and hence sales are built on that....the brand is then “built over time”. Even though looking from a pure quality of materials and workmanship standpoint, it might look like it is overpriced. Status and design have always been an expensive proposition and not necessarily “practical”.
Love your videos
Nice review as always.
On other note, maybe drop the rotating transition? It might make some audiences dizzy.
Love Fort Belvedere products, do you ship to Mexico City? Please let me know!
I love fashion. To me designer items are pieces of art. I try to look minimalistic, I wear dark colours, basics and to me wearing logos are not that bad, that does not turn me into a plane Jane or a showoff. I like most logos ( especially the ones that are subtle (eg, Hermes, Celine, Ferragamo) and I like to invest in timeless well made clothes/accesories. I'm thinking of getting an Hermes instead of a Gucci for example. ( I love Gucci, but the GG is seen everywhere nowadays)
Great video 💯
Make a video on Tom Ford please!!!
Awesome stuff here I have 4 of them 😎 we are ready for the Tom Ford stuff 👌🏾
I personally owned E zegna, hermes and canali belt, I would say the best and durable belt is Canali, the leather quality is awesome, after so many years still remain the same.
Canali and etro is my personal favorite some of the best quality
Can you be able to review a salvatore ferragamo belt too ? Thank you !
I do believe I'd use one of these belts to hold up my old high school gym shorts with mystery stains on a trip to McD's.
Please do a video on high quality furniture, and where to get used high-quality furniture.
The Odyssée (silver) buckle is for me the most sophisticated one . And If you do not know Hermès you would never guess it is an Hermès which is for me the main point ...not for show off .
What is the fabric and colour called on that lovely jacket you have? Do you not have that in double breasted also? I really want a suit like that myself.
p.s. I actually have orange shoes - love them, but I also think they work well if you're a girl:)
This was an EXCELLENT video. Coincidentally I have been toying with the idea of buying a belt.
EXCELLENT timing. I'm going to Miami Monday to look.
Don't know gold tone or silver.
Leaning towards gold.
I have two pairs of boat shoes
( like top siders) made by Hermès. Under the name of John Lobb. $1,300 each pair. It's wonderful. So comfortable.
And absolutely no one knows any different. I do.
Kind of like.....do I wear a Rolex? Everyone knows....thus I'm Mr.Hoo-Ha.
Or wear my plain understated Patek?
Great infos. But I would just like to say I personally never wear a sports jacket or a suit without neckware. It is like desecrating to me but I think in a few years neckware will be completely antiquated and I am afraid the worth of one's ties will be only a few pennies.
15:46 had me dying lol
I like my 5 dollar belts. i've splurged on a few 15$ belts from costco, and one of them is actually good.
Just noticed Red Wing Boots on the intro. People that have to wear boots for work call them Dead Wings.
You touched on it a little bit in the video. I really like montblanc belts. How long do you think they should last?
Years! I have two friends who were passed down belts bought in the 90s and 80s with moderate use and they're still in tip top shape!
Raphael, I am a bit skeptical about your folded edge finish. Fist, I've never seen this finish on high-end belts, even at Duret Paris. Second, leather edges -- even burnished -- exposed to the type of friction occuring at the waist is at risk of getting damaged vs painted edges. Third, it looks less "neat" than painted edges in my opinion. Lastly, nicely painted edges is quite difficult to achieve and is often the mark of great craftmanship. It would be great if you could shed light on how you made your decision. Thanks!
I can see how a lot of people don’t like this channel because of how he corrects them. But in reality it’s just how you view it at the end of the day his educating you chose to be here you choose to be educated his not insulting anyone his simply sharing information witch most of us appreciate but there’s always the 1% that will take offense cause his correcting or fact checking or what not. Let’s just appreciate his knowledge and be mature about it.
Are you wearing S&M linen shirt?
I'm reminded of Rimmer from Red Dwarf and the arch crook from Line of Duty.
Did you get the 32mm or 35mm?
Raphael,
the belts on your website look excellent! And many of your other products do, too.
Can you not create a European/EU online shop? I hate paying import customs when ordering from the US.
I think they're trying to work with a foreign drop shipper.
can you made a brand of D'r martens shoes from england please
I understand the criticism regarding the lack of information they provide on the materials. But generally, I’d rather buy these goods at the boutique, where the staff will most likely give you all the information you’d like. Also they often have a larger stock or will be able to order a product from a different store. Last but not least: if you ever decide to buy a Birkin/Kelly your chances depend upon your local purchase history. As silly as it is...
In regards to leather quality, I wonder what Rose Avil would say.
His channel specializes in dissecting shoes and gauging the quality of all of the materials used, especially the leather.
He did a tear down video. Bout to watch it after this.
Dang Chrometanned? I was always hoping my hermes pieces would be vegetable tanned... especially for the price and longevity... also disappointed in the lack of hand stitching...
Don't care how good quality it is. The item is simply tachy and goes against classic style rules.
They are not bad, but that price tag includes a lot more than mtrl cost, labor and 200% markup.
The H belt isn’t worth it, but their Cape Cod belt looks great.
