The paint is most likely the correct color but the car paint has almost guarantied suffered Sun damage causing it to be a lighter color than the new paint
Sam, you expect the expensive paint to match, when proffesionals are not painting the car, you're just a bunch of amateurs if the people who paint them at the factory took that paint and repainted the car it would match, same as if you took it to a proffesional shop worth their sauce, I mean what did you expect painting it outdoors, you know nothing about the properties of paint.
@@MrRuniteOre If I had a nickel for every time someone told me I'd have to hire a professional, I'd have my own Ferrari. If I listened to them, I'd likely be broke. This is one of those things that's learnable, and this is how you learn. $70 in paint is nothing compared to the knowledge he's gained.Everyone starts somewhere. Kudos to Sam & Zach.
@@xnadave Forget it, you completely missed my point, So I'm not going to entertain your antics, you can do paint jobs on cheap cars to learn, not the other way around..
@@MrRuniteOre The thing already looked like crap. They didn't make it worse. Shrug.
British Racing Green is a darker color. Darker colors seem to have more noticeable tint variance from UV in sunlight but all paints fade as they age. It all depends on exposure.
The other thing that isn't common knowledge is there will be noticeable tint element and base color variances from batch to batch even tho they come from the same manufacturer.
Even Gallons, pints, or quarts mixed by your paint guy from the same batches of tint and base will vary slightly from container to container. Even a very good paint guy will have slight variability. When you paint an entire vehicle you want to mix the pints, quarts, or gallons for that job together so they are one homogeneous color. A good paint house will do that for you.
The above is why color matching in collision repair is an art.
I would probably sand and repaint the hood along with the car.
I would get UV blockers added to the clearcoat if possible. They do help slow UV color layer fade quite a bit.
The original British Racing Green will be gorgeous. Lots of work to get there but the end product will be worth it.
Can confirm, I have a fiberglass cap on my Tacoma that was installed probably a month or two after I bought the truck new. Same paint, maybe a year between applications, and they're subtly different shades.
@@blze0018 Different batches.
Yep my 2004 m3 is silver and you can see slight variations in tint in the panels under certain lighting. It bugs the crap out of me but i really dont want to drop the money on properly correcting it.
also a good habit to stir the paint before you take some from the can
not after
That Black 360 Challenge Stradale at the beginning looks familiar, must be owned by some cool dude over in the UK being a RHD Ferrari 😎

I was thinking that the “cool dude” might be making another trip to the States to make sure Sam didn’t make any mistakes.

My inner body guy screams a little. “Blendddd within panel!!” “Don’t panel paint!” “Don’t stop clearing half way on the panel!”
The voices in my head said the same thing.
I’m glad someone else was thinking this! My OCD was killing me watching him paint.
Whats with the half stroke spray? Thick in the middle?
My OCD was killing me! I don't know why people attempt body/paint work on something this expensive when they clearly don't have the experience. When I was in the industry I wouldn't touch exotic cars for over 5+ years, even then I knew my skill sets boundaries.
@LotusLambo I'd say it's probably better to start at one end (let's say back), and also standing on that end to reach the back half. Then go to the front, and again stand in a place where he can reach the entire front half.
That being said, maybe some of you can give me some pointers. Any advice for painting an engine bay? I'm busy with my '87 Mazda 323, and plan to start shooting colour soon (normal single stage white, 2k of course). But I'm a bit worried about places like the strut towers. Oh, and I will be painting in pieces. Partially to make the job managable, and partially to get proper coverage (no missed spots, since it's a shade change).
17:20 paint fade happens.... that’s why you HAVE TO BLEND IT!
Or just paint the whole thing 😉
You've mistakenly assumed people come here to see things done correctly... they don't. They come to see what Sam fucks up next.
Yeah come on, I don't claim I know anything on car painting, but I do know that fade happens and this was to be expected.
It depends on how much the rest of the car is faded. You can't always blend faded to new without tinting the color coat to get closer to the faded color.
@@ultimaterebuilds7127 Or color match to the faded paint.
Couldn't tell if I was watching Samcrac or the home shopping network ? Dam Sam.

With metallics there are many tricks to get a lighter shade. More pressure, dry coat, faster evaporating solvent. You just should have tried all this on a test panel of metal to see what to use for a good match.
The color match difference may only be paint fade, especially if the car was in a high UV area like Florida.
I know sweet fuck all about paint and even I knew that it fades in the sun over a few years.

It did actually spend a lot of time under an ugly wrap. But he could’ve had the paint analyzed and had paint mixed to match the faded colors.
I'm sure Zach knows what he's doing, but I've never seen anyone stop in the middle of a panel like that (9m50s). My gut says that would lead to extra buildup where the two passes overlap. As far as the paint color difference goes: is it possible that the clear has faded, maybe from sitting outside at the salvage yard(s), etc.? Great work. I've really enjoyed following this one.
it's a legit technique, notice the flick of the wrist to blend it in and you need to be quick to ensure the paint stays wet
i agree you go the distance, not halfway, wouldnt let that kid paint my lawnmower!
@@chadsimmons6347 have you seen his work? You couldn't afford him
@@scotthartman4424 I wish him the best, and not bragging, but i can afford the best.
FFS Why would anyone stop mid panel? Ideally I would walk the entire car in a full repaint but for a single small panel you should never ever stop mid panle; that was one of the worse painting techniques I have seen - nobody should ever do that. Keep up the other great work Sam
A.J. Scalzitti , I was looking for this comment. The hood isn’t even that large. He could have started at the front and when he couldn’t reach, he could have walked to the rear and done edge to edge.
Wow I’m taking note of the masking tape trick to pour the paint👌
I saw that too, very clever 👍🏻
We interrupt this ad for Mike Bloomberg with a few glimpses of Sam and his Ferrari.
Buys Factory Paint, wonders why it doesn’t match the 15 year old paint on the car.
Billy here. Like everyone else has said. You can't paint in age with paint. Could have probably blend in to the front header panel and finders and cleared the front end. You would have a match then. Just a thought. It is a cool car though. If you're going to sale it you might be better off a complete lower body repaint though. The clientele that wants that car will inspect it very close. They know what there looking for... Not trying to tell you what to do or bossing you in any way, just throwing out some ideas. Thanks for the video. Enjoyed it. Good luck. Billy
Just found your channel and I am loving it! No matter what others say, your approach to this Ferrari is commendable and you understand what it is and what it isn’t. Best part of this video is the dark blue VW Phaeton in the background! Keep up the good work Sam!
Hey Sam awesome rebuild you give us everyday guys the dream that owning a Ferrari can be done with a lot of hard work. Great content and congrats on almost a million subscribers!!!!
Next episode: "Building a chicken coop from a Ferrari". The chickens seem to dig the car.
After all the heartache of the mechanical, it must be sort of relaxing to "only" have cosmetic fixes to worry about. Well done on getting to this point Sam, I can't wait to see that brand new BRG paintjob. The 360 is a hell of a pretty car, and whilst I wouldn't have thought any colour other than Rosso Corsa is "right" for a Ferrari, the British Racing Green is definitely growing on me. You can be proud of having that on your driveway, I hope it gives you many miles and years of joy.
When dealing with a paint store you should have a match done using not only the code but a piece of the car for reference to match up too, there are also camera readings that can be done for a even closer match.
I love your dedication Sam, please never give up and keep up the good work!!
Duuuude that compressor is amazing. Most quiet one I’ve heard
Sam, I think would be better to find a specialist to match the color in the hood. Paint the whole car is a hell of a job, and if the job isn't perfect the cost will be even more to fix.
It is perfect 👀😉
Love watching youngsters (Zach) with mad automotive repair skills. Normally at his age they are still in their Mom and Dads basement playing video games all day. Sweet .......
Cars fade man. It’s an old car... happens with paint especially with a convertible. Sun changes things. It’ll be great once done!
You also have to blend metallic paint into the other panels
@@mrrocknroll84 - This doesn't look like metallic paint.
Wow Sam congrats your almost at 1 million subscribers you will see them easily this year.
hey sam heres how you match the paint ,get five swatches of prepared pices of metal ,prime and prepare like you normally do ,then paint the first one with one coat ,second one two coats, third one three coats, forth one for coats, fith one five coats, now you have a group of different shades to compare with the original paint on the car match the closest one and use the same number of coats that matched your test coats
A lot of talk about paint not matching but I’ve had great results, what I noticed was that dark color going over a light primer. Even with black I use a black sealer coat. When spraying dark colors even after a few coats you might think you have complete coverage but often you don’t. Also dirty and warn clear will make it look bad.
Half prep / Half infomercial .. The first half was great
Mind The Gap, I agree, but have to realize ads make him money. The other scenario would be sending him cash to do these videos. Cheaper just to watch him sell us something for a minute! Lol

One thing I would done is set the panel bond on the bracket fixed to the car in about 1/2 inch of adjust either up or down and then install the bumper and set it to gap and tape it in place with phone books stacked under to keep it level
It doesn't matter the paint brand you buy, it's all mixed at the store. When you're buying such small quantities, it's often harder to get the exact amount of paint accurate for the formula, because the tolerances are lower. Always test spray on some cardboard and compare. Get the shop to do a remix if it doesn't match. And blending would definitely help, but isn't always necessary if you can nail the colour match.
Finally SAMCRACC attac gives us more videos!
I may have missed a video or 2, but don't you have that inflatable paintbooth anymore? Maybe it wasn't it all that great to use anyway? In any case this Ferrari deserves a good paintjob.
Doesn't matter that it's the exact same paint; what matters is that there were likely several variances and you were sold (or chose) the incorrect one. Always do spray outs before committing to a panel respray. Panel painting can turn out perfectly fine as long as you choose the correct variance in advance.
For starters you need to blend any connecting panel. so if you're doing the fenders you need to do the hood, then you need to blow in the doors
Yo Sam you own this UA-cam car scene , you're the best of best.
BStard agreed 👍

Tavarish: *that’s illegal*
FYI: To get a paint to match - one needs to ask the seller of the paint at what quantity of paint (to match original formula) needs to be ordered to get the exact paint formula as the original factory paint formula. Sometimes it can be 8 ounces - but only the color formula computer can determine that quantity. In small quantities some components of the paint are so small it is literally ZERO. But to match the original those elements cannot be excluded! I've had to order much more paint than required to get the exact color formulation/match to existing paint. Another excellent solution is to have the paint on the repaired auto scanned by a local
HI TECH paint seller with their high end color matching camera. This will also accommodate the change of the original color of the paint as the sun (UV rays) makes the original color change / fade. Also they can advise you again at what quantity needs to be mixed to match factory original formula.
Not trying to be that youtube expert or hater but it's highly recommended against mixing filler on cardboard. The cardboard can soak up a lot of the stuff not only in the filler but the hardener and makes for a really uneven and longer drying filler. Just figured I'd pass that info along.
Why didn't your painter do one pass across the hood rather than stopping three quarters of the pass across-----
It's probably a 3+2 paint and doesn't matter. Being on something curved like a hood will also make left and right unviewable at the same time also.
@Phil R 3 paint coats 2 clear coats. The most expensive the car the more of each to hide problems and give more scratches something to bite into before they hit metal.
It's lazy and costly but effective!

You go from one side of the object and follow thru all the way to the other side. Never, I repeat never stop the gun until your fully all the way across the other side and off the object. You always want a good solid stroke from one side all the way across. Especially on a Ferrari you want to pay attention to detail on the paint.

You can leave the old compressor connected to your air system, just for the tank, you'll have extra volume to work with and your pressure won't drop that fast.

Look in the door jams. The jams dont see as much sunlight so you can see how well the paint you bought matches the original paint.
It’s an absolute miracle you can get a decent finish painting in a dusty barn!
Dont listen to the critics. Its your car do what you want with it. Painting the whole thing sounds like right way to go with this one.
post more often please ma man, it can be small as well
What happened to your Eastwood turbine paint system?
It's super difficult to match the color as the original color of the car changes simply due to the sun and aging, it's the right color you painted it, the original paint just changed that's all. Looks awesome !
Sam why wouldn’t you think 16 year old paint, might not match new paint? It’s had 16 years of containment’s, UV damage and countless washes with various chemicals. It’s why painters blend onto panels that surround.
I'm sure that paint is correct, it's just that the rest of it faded and wasn't taken care of.

Omg he left that ugly color, should have repainted all car.
Colors can be funny under different lighting... I worked at a luggage store for a number of years and the owners loved getting "Seconds" from high-end manufacturers to sell at discounted rates. We got a huge stock of Tumi in as "seconds" and we were marking the stuff down. When people would ask why we had it on sale I would wheel the suitcase out into the mall and under the sky light... the Green suitcase under fluorescent light would look black under natural light... The color was supposed to be black but because under indoor lighting it wasn't we got to sell these suitcases for a song... and the greenish color didn't look half bad.
I became hooked with Range Rovers with your 2004 head gasket project. Would love to see another one.

The paint does match probably because it has been baking in the sun over the years. Which is why McLaren said they won’t replaced that infamous floor tile because it will not match the rest of the flooring because they have been there for years exposed to the sun.
I have never dreamed about owning a Ferrari. I never wanted a car that needed to be in the shop more than it was on the road.
UV in bright sunlight will pretty much always bleach out paint. Some colors, especially bright red or orange, shift very quickly. You probably DO have a color match--for new paint. Regular waxing helps if you can't garage it, to prevent this on any car.
