I didn't know serious games were still made with low poly graphics. I love that someone can decide to focus solely on other parts of the experience because graphics is probably the least inportant factor in how fun a game is

To a degree. Yes fun gameplay should come first, but there's no denying good graphics can sometimes make a game more immersive. It depends on the genre and what the game is going for. Platformers and 2D beat em ups are generally fine at what ever graphics.

@@skycloud4802 It depends on the experience you're seeking. You can play something with cutting edge graphics and visuals like Hellblade 2 and have a very deep and immersive experience. But I don't see people describing it as "fun". It's good in a different way because the devs prioritized the look of the game over fun gameplay.

Yooka Laylee makes me so mad. We gave them millions and they put out a 2/5 game, then quickly moved onto 2d platforming (the sequel is good but there's a bazillion good 2d platformers, that's not what we gave you millions for).
And now they want us to buy their remake.....so disappointing. They missed a golden opportunity to be the kings of 3d platform games.

I think the biggest irony here is that 3D platformers in the 90s and 2000s simply did not exist on PC. Most of them were multiplatform but for whatever reason publishers didn't think these would do well in PC market. Today the PC (or Steam) is the home of the genre.

Great video! 3D platformers were some of my favorite games growing up! I played the heck out of Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Rayman 2, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper...and probably many more!
I did play through A Hat in Time, Mario Odyssey, Yooka-Laylee, Spyro Reignited, Crash N. Sane, and Crash 4 years ago, so I never thought 3D platformers completely disappeared. They're definitely still around, but some of them take more digging to find! Though, I usually have to do a little more research to kind of check the quality of the game. When I was younger, if the N64 box had the Nintendo or Rareware logo on it, it was usually a safe bet that I would enjoy it! 😅
I actually didn't even know about the 3D platformers you mentioned, so I appreciate you giving them attention. I will definitely pick those up as I still enjoy 3D platformers of all kinds!

Although i would disagree on the Sonic Adventure games not felling as fast, while it is true that there are dash pads and automated loops that's where it ends, the amount of shortcuts you can pull of on those games by bouncing, spindashing then jumping or airdashing right before hitting the ground, even with the boost games i never feel the same control and speed that i do with the Adventure games

3D platformers were the original open world games. One was popular, everyone had to follow the trend.

    • @orangeslash1667
      @orangeslash1667 29 днів тому +2

Collect-a-thon were needed back then due to hardware limitations. Once open world games become a tread, Collect-a-thons were seen as redundant.
Such as Sucker Punch abandoning Sly Cooper in favor of Ghost of Tsushima, or Rare working on Everwild despite fans wanting Banjo.
The good news is that collect-a-thons are still a thing indie games, because small companies don't have the resources to make an open world game. For example Hat in Time was originally an action game, but Jonas Kaerlev felt that the action was underwhelming compared to the jumping, thats why it became a platformer.

In what sense do you mean action games, if i may ask? For fans of games like Darksiders, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, known as Character Action games (or whatever the name is at the moment) the genre is quite dry too these years. They're surprisingly difficult to make because of the way everything the player can do should ideally work well with everything an enemy can do.
The player has offensive, defensive and evasive/movement options, and so need the enemies. Plus programming that makes them use those options competently.
In recent years there have been Bayonetta 3 and GOW: Ragnarök, but story-wise Bayonetta 3 has a LOT of detractors and people are split on the actual gameplay. GOW by this point is a very different beast from how it started out, to the point there's a large amount of people that don't consider it Character Action.
Even still, a lot of effort has to go into considering enemy teamups and setups and taking into account how a player's arsenal grows.
There has been Soulstice in 2022 at least, and for upcoming character action games specifically, there's the likes of Genokids, Magenta Horizon, Jamphibian, Mightreya and Enenra: Daemon Core.
With Gori: Cuddly Carnage, Immortal and the Death that Follows, and Cookie Cutter having a place somewhere, but another problem there is to get word of such games out there.
To make 'em profitable and help out devs so that they can hopefully give more like it.

I had my hope for Gal Gun series but it all went down the drain when I discover Inti Creates would do more Gal Guardians. They are not a bad spin-off but I will miss my arcade-ish on rail games.

Yeah, the Wii is great for aiming, every game that used motion for aiming worked 10 times better and has generally high acclaim(RE4's wii port often being called the best version for instance). It probably should have been the shooter-console, but the family friendly focus in addition to players prefering dual-stick controllers at the time made it fairly niche in the end.

did you ever get to play Ninja Assault or Vampire Night on PS2? Those were some great light gun games that people hear less about than Time Crisis 2/3. I would LOVE to go play RE Dead Aim as well since I missed it at the time.
The Wii (or Wii U for the HDMI wii) is good for scratching that light gun itch, but you are working off a sensor bar with a permanent icon showing you where you're "aiming"-- not shooting where you point on the screen. It's different. Ever so slightly, but if you want to play those wii light gun games, they just don't hit the same, and you need to be even more skilled when it comes to accuracy and clutching precise shots. It works seeing your reticle and adjusting, but it isn't quite as good...
Probably my favorite on the system is Darkside Chronicles, bc they made the replay value worthwhile in that game through upgrades and alternate paths. That one plays so much more like an RE game than I thought it would... Also, I might be alone in saying it, but I don't mind Star Fox Zero on Wii U, people just don't want to learn new controls or be "bad" at a game they are typically "good" at, that's all. That game rules!
Also, shoutout for liking the n64 Sin and Punishment as well as Star Successor on Wii, those are so good. Star Fox 64 is my all time favorite on rails shooter.
I'm one of the people who think RE4 Wii Edition is the best version of that game btw.

This may sound harss, but the problem was Super Mario 64.
After that, every developer tried that type of 3D -formula, but failed miserably.
Super Mario 64 was simply too good and unique.
Sure, there were Banjo -Kazooie, Spyro The Dragon, Donkey Kong 64, Ape Escape, Rocket Robot On Wheels, and Conker's Bad Fur Day that all were excellent games.
But ultimately, concept was too much for developers to handle. They really struggled with free -rolling gameplay -concept on platformers. Losed "red string" when trying it on larger scale, as seen on Banjo -Tooie and Jak And Daxter.
While Nintendo has minds to master this type of gameplay, perhaps others should not even try, or they waste years.
However Rayman 2 & 3 were superb examples of 3D -platforming done right, courtesy of not doing Mario 64.
There is a place for 3D -platformers as seen on current Sonic Generations -game for example, but not for 3D -puzzle platformers outside Kyöto -shi.

3D platformers fell out of favor because a few reasons:
    1. Oversaturation of them in the market. The 5th and 6th generations were absolutely bloated with 3D platformers. People always remember the good ones like Mario 64, Rayman, Banjo, Crash, and Spyro. But for every one of these there was another dozen that were mediocre to bad.
    2. The evolution of 3D graphics. Devs started dipping their toes into storytelling a lot more when the ps2/xbox/gamecube allowed for characters to actually express emotions and voice acting without looking cartoonish and blocky. We started getting things like 3D GTA, God of War, Silent Hill 2, KOTOR, MGS2/3, etc. Even the platformers started getting more edgy. Just look at Ratchet and Clank, Jak 2/3 compared to 1, and Shadow the Hedgehog. Once the ps3/360 era started, realism became way more desirable as there was a want for more mature storytelling once semi-realism was achievable.

@@Tenacityfromtheglass Collect-a-thon were needed back then due to hardware limitations.
