Thank you for this! I have been wondering about becoming a character designer but I wasn't really sure how. Your channel has been so helpful for me it's unreal.
I am a young artist hoping to get into the industry of character design in the future. I am only 15, but I've been drawing all my life, and am very well known for my talent and skill in drawing. Of course I have a long way to go when it comes to art, work ethic, and overall direction I want to go in this field. As most artists have most likely experienced, I recently had a family member claim that, "Art school is only useful if you are planning to be an art teacher at a public school or college," in short, claiming that the direction I want to go is not worth my time. I understand that art school is incredibly expensive, and the exact classes that would be beneficial for character design are difficult to come across. So, if you don't mind... what is your opinion on art school? And perhaps you could give a little background on how you got to where you are now, through a reply, or even better, dedicate a video answering these questions. If you cannot respond, I understand. Thank you for the time you take out of your days to make these videos. You have been a massive help
Hi, I'm not exactly a character designer but I work in art and regarding that family member of yours, I would like to ask a question. Does he/she work in any shape or form in art may he/she be an art teacher, animator, illustrator, graphic designer, fine artist, concept artist or character design?(I'm sure there are more art jobs out there) If not, then chances are he/she does not know what he/she is talking about. He/she does not know the art industry. Does he/she think that animators don't go to school? That concept artist just figured things on their own? Sure there are exceptions. There are those really talented geniuses out there. But for most of us, we need instruction. We need to go to school to polish our skills for the marketplace. Try to research really successful artists in all fields and check if they went to art school. You'll find that most of them did. Show this to your family member and hopefully this will change his/her mind.
Very informative video. Thank you. I don't mind that's not exactly "Art" centered but I appreciate the information nonetheless. I still need to find the time besides my regular job to learn art before I can even think about a career as a freelance artist.
Thanks man! I appreciate that. Lots of interested people, but not my typical cup of tea. That's great though! It's all a journey. Despite the wunderkind propaganda, there's no rush.
Hi, Brookes! I'm an illustrator who is aspiring to also be a character designer. Thank you for the video. It was very helpful. However, I would like to ask you a few more questions that I feel weren't answered in your video. Here they are: How did you get your start as a character designer? Did you just set up a website and that's it or did you submit applications to various companies? How did you market yourself? Did you post a ton of work on social media and that's where your clients discovered you? Did you join sites such as ArtStation? Thank you so much for responding.
I've been watching your videos for a couple weeks now (I'm not a visual artist, nor trying to be one, but I find it interesting to hear to a different viewpoint, and I want to understand the way that visual artist work in the case of working with one). And I have to say that having a list at all times was a great improvement. You don't really use the screen a lot (just for self-expression), and this thing catalogues the video while adding a clear flow.
Thank you so much for this video! I've always wanted to be a character designer and knowing these things make me more confident on my journey to become a character designer!
Thank you so much for the info! I've known for quite a while that I love designing characters, their stories, their looks and persona. This really helped me to look for the next step to get where I want.
Man I'm glad you talked about the freelance sites cuz I've tried them a few times but always wound up feeling frustrated both getting projects and finishing them. I'm currently focused on webcomics but kept feeling like if I wanted to actually make money I'd have to delve back into those sites and it'd always leave a bad taste in my mouth, but your advice here helped confirm that the goals I have right now are more realistic and less aggravating (things like participating in community projects, keeping an ear out for collectives I can participate in, making connections with my fellow webcomicers, etc.) Would rather build connections with an audience that values what I do than fight for work from those who don't. I'm not making much right now, but I only started getting really serious about it back in September, and I feel like the growth I have been making has been fantastic despite not being at it for all that long. So yes, thank you so much for making this video. Can't wait to see that upcoming "biggest mistakes" video ;)
this video helped me with my career choice, and I don't know if you could help but I would love to make cartoons, movies and possibly games is there one carrier choice or something particularly I would like to be
Hi! I'm interested in taking your course in the summer, but i was wondering if there's any "proof of completion" that i'd be able to put on my resume? love your videos by the way, they've helped me a lot!
Thank you Tinanenna! I would absolutely be glad to write a letter on your behalf stating that you had completed the course. Otherwise, there's no certification or accreditation. From personal experience, though, and from what I've heard a lot of other artists say, employers care less about your qualifications and more about the work you make. My course is simply meant to help you make better work. 😄
I'm in year 11 and iv always wanted to either be an animator or a character designer, if always loved drawing my own characters and making emotional connections to these characters. I am also a gamer and iv always wanted to work for a game company (NAUGHTY dog mostly) and I was wondering if that will be possible because it's been a goal of mine for years. But do you think that it's possible and could you give me advice. Thank you (this is for anyone now not just this really cool man) Ps. Thank you this video has helped me alot thank you.
Should a client even be asking for the file that has every work layer in a piece for a freelance job? Even if the freelance job is for the client's company? I did that years ago and think it was a mistake as the client would later on have me do a few clean ups of characters drawn by someone else but would have other artists do the rest of the official work attempting to imitate the methods I had used.
I think that should be part of the agreement upfront- ive gotten bitten by clients going in and finding my messy half opacity pencil sketch layer and offering it as a trading card variant 😖
@@CharacterDesignForge I was just contacted the other day by someone about how a job some client wanted me for rejected me. Apparently back in March I was wanted for some work but all any of them did was tell the client that I was available but never ran a thing by me. Not even checking to see if I actually was available or even telling me about the so-called job. I'm not hearing about this until six months later? This sounds like the usual case with people I deal with who instantly assume that I have all of this free time and don't work a full time job. I have to because I've never been paid to draw once in my life.
I love drawing characters and just create little worlds and stories for them but then i leave them and create more...can i sell the character designs along eith their world for others to own or?? Just the oc designs? I have so much that i only managed to show 10??? On insta but my passion for each dies down and i create another oc out of nowhere!....;---;
I have an account I don't share personal info on but ask sfw questions. Should I delete all the non art posts in the future or just start all over and delete the original?
Deviantart as the Mos Eisley Cantina... That is incredibly accurate.

You’re so welcome Cameron, that’s awesome!

Any of the places I mentioned at 3:40! :)
Thanks!

@@CharacterDesignForge That way the client profits from free additional work.

Can I pay you for a consultation for a character design?
Check out brookeseggleston.com/shop for critiques or a one on one session!
do you think it's acceptable to include fanart in a portfolio?
Yeesh. That's a really tough call. I think it would depend on a case to case basis, but I'd have to lean toward saying no.

Same thing for me, except that the worlds keep growing.. I want to produce each one eventually in some shape or form.. What is the name for that? Lol
I have an account I don't share personal info on but ask sfw questions. Should I delete all the non art posts in the future or just start all over and delete the original?
i dont think artstation dosent feel good place for it
