  • Hey everyone! In this video I do a small explanation of how the flash guide number/guide numbers work(s) and why it could potentially be important.
    The flash guide number could be very useful for those who are at the beginning of their photo shooting experience.
    The flash guide number works the same on film as it does on digital.
    I make a small explanation on how the guide number is calculated by the GN =Fstop x Distance formula.
    With this simple formula all 3 influences on your flash exposure are covered so you can make correct flash exposures.
    I hope this video is useful to folks out there who need it. Hope you've enjoyed the video and happy flash shooting.

    As chance would have it, my photo experience commenced in high school, where I was rapidly channeled into shooting the school sports events for the school publications. Whether inside basketball or Friday night football, that meant flash photography. Whether 35mm or 4x5 inches, the flash was all manual, and the source was one-shot flashbulbs, later shifting to an early electronic flash. The idea of guide numbers is grounded in physics. If your data is correct, there is no flex or subjectivity, just correct exposure. Whether flash bulb or electronic, the curse was bad data. The guide numbers were shamelessly overstated, representing a light output greatly beyond the true capacity. This was advertising driving sales mainly, but for bulbs the type and quality of your flash gun reflector made a huge difference too. In the end, they were all hugely unreliable. To hope for any decent results, you have to dry run the flash, bubs if applicable, film and chosen developer/timing, to determine a workable combination. Where flash become reliable was the technological point where thyristor circuits in the flash would read the light values reflected from the subject and meter the flash output to insure adequate exposure. For the last 30 years or so, we rely on similar functions in the flash or in the camera, integrating film speed, subject distance, f-stop, and light output, so these problems don't really exist now.

      Personally I still see value in understanding guide numbers. I completely understand things have become automated but if someone can understand their flash on a bit of a deeper level it will benefit their photography. I’m happy I’m not the only one who knew guide numbers are usually inflated. I see they’ve been doing it quite some time.

    I've got three old flashes and cannot find any mention of guide number . Kind of hard to know how to adjust the camera.

      If you don’t have a flash light meter you can use a digital camera to establish the guide number of those flashes. Just see what a correct exposure is at any F stop 5 foot (or whatever works) and use the formula to calculate the guide number.

    I have a question: if the GN decreases, should we decrease it with zoom or flash so that the GN remains the same if the zoom is changed?

      I’m not sure if I understand your question completely. Would you mind rephrasing it so I can effectively help you? Thanks so much in advance.

      @@TheFilmFellow Does GN change with Zoom Flash? calculate GN = 4m x F8
      => 32GN with 35mm Zoom on Flash
      or The manufacturer only defaults to 60GN all the time when Zoom Flash?

    Great content looks like your IG is private now days

      Yes I’ve made it private because for me personally since I’m in a relationship I don’t want any half naked women following me out of respect for my girlfriend. This way I can curate it.
