Street Photography With the Nikon F100 & Kodak Portra 800
Hey everyone!
In this video I shoot Kodak Portra 800 literally for the first time and I totally love it as an 800 speed, 35mm street photography film and in particular for night time photography. Coming with the Portra moniker brings heaps of hype and let me tell you this film did not disappoint.
It's sharp, it's grain is incredibly well controlled for an 800 speed, 35mm film and its skin tones are so beautiful. Its skin tones are truly second to none but then Portra 800 doesn't have much competition.
I hope you like the shots as much as I enjoyed taking them and let me know what you think of Portra 800 in the comments.

Street Photography With The Konica IIIA and FujiFilm 200

Hey everyone! I hope y'all are doing great! In this video I hit the streets armed with my Konica IIIA and Fujifilm 200. After having shot a lot of Kodak Vision3 35mm films I feel that it's healthy to switch up 35mm films every now and then just to keep your street photography exciting. FujiFilm 200 is certainly a familiar street photography film to me and I truly enjoy shooting it. It has a gre...

Hey everyone! I'm back with a street photography video. In this video I shoot with my trusty Nikon FE2 and a new Nikkor 35mm f2.8 because I've been curious about shooting with a 35mm versus a 50mm for quite a while now. Spoiler alert: I really like the 35mm focal length. It really suites the #deepellum project and I love how one can incorporate more of the scene, more of the environment into th...

    One fixed focal lens forces you to think. I once did very well when I put on the wrong lens (so I thought) for a parade. It then went very well because I had no time to change lens! I was never that creative before! 45m is a good choice if 35 seems wide for you. 35 is the lower bound and 45 is the upper bound. Therefore there were 37mm, 39mm, 40mm, 42mm film cameras in the past in between 35 and 45.

    • @TheFilmFellow
      @TheFilmFellow 3 дні тому

      Most definitely my sweet spot is somewhere between 45mm and 35mm. I’ve been shooting with a 50 out on the streets for a few years now and although I love it for portraits, it’s a little too tight for the rest of what I’d like to shoot. It’s workable, but tight. I do love the 50 for street photography thought. A few months ago I switched to a 35mm lens for street after shooting with the 50 for years and although there was a small learning curve I pretty much took right to it. Some say the difference between a 50 and a 35 is negligible but I beg to differ. It changes the way you think and therefore how you shoot. Right now I’m very interested in shooting with a 40mm lens. The Voïgtlander 40 F2 is on my mind in the pursuit of the “perfect” all day, every day street lens. Still very much learning to find my path and street signature if you will but that process in itself is also very rewarding. Thanks so much for watching.

    Really nice setup. Using a flash on a fantastic camera with a central shutter must be absolutely great. Flash on all shutterspeeds, man!! Fill-in flash in broad daylight will be great. Then you get the experience with the rangefinder in the IIIa as well. Is there any better 1:1 finder on this earth..?

    • @TheFilmFellow
      @TheFilmFellow 29 днів тому

      Thank you for your very nice comment. I do believe that when it comes to rangefinders there is no better viewfinder than the Konica IIIA. The engineers of that day really put a lot of thought into it and you can see that this camera was designed as a direct competitor to the Leica M3. Most cameras with a hinged door will feel a tad cheap due to the poor design of the hinge but with the Konica IIIA it feels as if the camera and door are welded together. The build quality and image quality are just second to none and the ability to indeed sync flash all the way up to 1/500 is nothing short of amazing. Thanks so much for watching.

    Fujifilm 200= Kodak Gold 200 Fujifilm 400= Kodak Ultramax 400

    • @TheFilmFellow
      @TheFilmFellow Місяць тому

      You know a lot of folks swear that FujiFilm 400 is Ultramax but in my experience it looks different from Ultramax. Especially when I switched from developing with Blix to a kit which has a separate bleach and fixer step these differences were underscored exceedingly. The characteristic curves are also different between the 2 films which at the point of making this video I definitely wasn’t privy to. Another aspect which most definitely allows me to draw this conclusion is I’ve been scanning my negatives with the same scanner and software for 7 years now so it’s easy for me to pick up on small differences. I feel that when the film was released initially labs just scanned this film with an Ultramax preset for lack of any other reference points. Reference point I do have in my workflow. All things considered I do believe this is not Ultramax. Skin tones, hues, grain, sharpness, color rendering/fidelity and contrast are all different in my workflow. Thanks so much for watching.

Also I’ve never tried this film stock so maybe I should try and see for myself if it differs from others. But I respect your opinion🙏🏻 maybe I should start learning how to develop and scanning myself haha.

      I would respectfully disagree. The F100 although marketed as prosumer can certainly be used for professional purposes and to reduce this camera to the rewind fork and door latch issue is not all the way fair. Nikon did replace the forks for free back in the day so there are plenty of copies with the updated forks and the ones with the original fork have made it this far. If you take care of the door latch, yes I would have rather seen a metal one, it will take care of you.

    The IIIA is a beautiful work of art in itself. I own a IIIA, III and IIA . I'm absolutely blown away with the form, function and feelings of using these vintage cameras. I would stack these Konica models against anything else on the market. Nice work.

      Thanks so much! Yes especially the Konica IIIA when it comes to the 50mm rangefinder camera experience this camera is truly second to none both in shooting experience and results. It’s truly one of the most amazing pieces of camera artwork ever made. It’s absolutely in a league of its own and I don’t think something like this will ever be done again. Plus, I could go on and on about that 50mm lens but I recommend to anyone and everyone to just get one and get it from Jeffrey Guthrie. Thanks so much for watching.

    I recently bought one of these with a "broken shutter" for a cheap price. I was hoping it would just be the usual sticky shutter blades. Unfortunately though, one of the tiny springs in the shutter mechanism is completely mangled and another spring appears to be missing. Damn it!

      I’m very sorry to hear that. I’m absolutely sure that Jeffrey Guthrie can repair it for you. Or get one that’s cheap with a working lens and swap the lens. You’ll love the Konica IIIA. It’s such a gem.

      @TheFilmFellow Thank you. I knew the risk I was taking when I bought it, so I'll have to take it on the chin. Professional services are so expensive (understandably so), so I won't rush into that, but thank you for the name. As I'm sure you know, these things are pretty hard to come by, even broken ones, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for possible parts donors. You are right, they are wonderful cameras. I'd heard all about the viewfinder, but I was still amazed when I looked through it. With my left eye open, it's like having a head up display built into my right eye 😄.

    I shoot rangefinders and SLRs. Love them both. My favorite rangefinder is a Leica M6 with 21/35/90mm lenses. I love to use my rangefinder when I need to shoot quietly and discretely at funerals and golf tournaments. My favorite SLR is a Nikon F2 that I use with two dozen Nikkor lenses that range in focal length from 14mm to 1000mm. I love to use my SLR when I need to configure the camera for the assignment. The camera configuration I need for macro photography is entirely different from what I need for fast action sporting events.

    I’m testing on Nikon F2AS + Nikon SB-800 w/ colour & B&W, comparing on Nikon D300s & D700 for exposure. Following scale & metering, mine go the other way, too much highlights by 1 to 1-2/3 over. Is this a Nikon thing or is metering compensating for that 1 stop loss ? Flash metering to compare, Gossen PeofiSix + Profi Flash & Minolta Flash Meter V. I’m metering flash for camera at 400 but apply 800 ~ 1000 value from meter. Both meters return the same & on par w/ others in ambient or reflective modes. Any thoughts? Or just use as is compensated!

    • @TheFilmFellow
      @TheFilmFellow 4 місяці тому

      I personally wouldn’t compare digital with film or use digital to “verify” film. There are differences in metering techniques. Digital meters much more like slide film. You don’t wanna blow highlights. I’d keep the 2 separated and invest in a flash meter. You’ll learn a lot more about shooting flash, the flash you’re working with and the camera you’re shooting with. Without me seeing your camera and flash I cannot give you any solid advice as to the issue you’ve presented. The best thing to do is to invest in a good flash meter. Good luck and thanks so much for watching.

Both both flash flash incident Non flash metering: same as above in each incident & reflective (Gossen offering 1⁰ spot reflective) as well as comparing Nikon D700 internal as a reference in its 1.5% spot & Matrix just to compare its average to Minolta multi area ratio. Davy Questions about the Tamron VC lens, and flash. How do you know that the VC is working? Can you see the difference when looking through viewfinder, on vs off ? Also what TTlL Nikon flash are you using and have you had any luck with the SB 600? I don’t necessarily need that model, but I do require TTL, swivel head/bounce option and High speed sync. Thanks FW

    • @TheFilmFellow
      @TheFilmFellow 5 місяців тому

      Hi Frank yes you should see the viewfinder itself stabilizing. That’s definitely one way you know it’s working. I personally use the Nikon SB-600 with my F100 and it has full compatibility except for HSS. If you want HSS I would purchase the Nikon SB-28 which is fully compatible with the F100 including HSS. Personally I do feel that HSS is a bit gimmicky. You do loose a lot of power and you’re better off making sure your lighting conditions are suited for 1/250.

    • @frankwolff2903
      @frankwolff2903 5 місяців тому

      Ok so the 600 will allow 1/250? That fast enough for me. I’m getting an F100 next day or so. I bought an F100 and Tamron 35 VC last month. I had to return 3 copies of the camera as they were flawed and did not live up to its EX , EX+ ratings. Trying again and will keep in touch. Thanks for the response. FW
