    Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

    Best Westie "pet" clip on UA-cam. If your learning about pet grooming watch this video.
    Its not always possible to hand strip pet Westies. This is the best pet clip that stays true to standard I've seen in UA-cam. Groomers, watch and learn.
    Great job

    Some comments on here saying she is being rough with the dog: please explain? As a groomer you are trained in handling the dog. You need to hold the face in certain ways to keep them still while you scissor the face. You need to hold the paws to trim around them. She is not yanking or pulling the dog in any way. Grooming your own dog is vastly different to grooming a clients. Also if you are putting scissors near a dog without handling them to keep them still then you are a bigger danger to that dog than any groomer. Also she didn’t clip his foot she caught the end of the nail when he moved (again why you have to hold parts of the dog!). She is a fab groomer and that westie is so well behaved. And that’s not even getting into the fact that yes clipping will soften the fur but it isn’t the end of the world. He’s a pet! It’s what the owner wants 🙄 jeez why watch this is you’re going to complain about a perfectly good groom!

      Many pet owners don't know how to groom a Westie or they are afraid to tell their groomer what the matter with their grooming job is. So yes, there are wrong ways to groom and shame on groomers that cab't get it right. Go back to school or watch this video.

    As an award-winning carrier groomer I would like to tell you how beautifully you are grooming this westie particularly impressed to see the use of the thinning shears so many groomers just don't use them in the proper way the blending the tail and the head particularly fabulous couldn't have done it better myself!

    I wish you were here in America! This is how I want my two Westies to look when they come home from the groomer, but no one here knows how to do what you just did! Monty looks amazing!!! My Westies are nearly 14 and 12 years old and none of the groomers I've taken them to knows how to groom our babies like this. I want to show this to our current groomer and ask that she memorize and follow every step of this video! :) We LOVE her, but my Westies NEVER come home looking as good as this boy does!!! Thank you, Julie for filming and posting this! I'm going to watch it again and get the hair spray that you use here to take to their next appointment. You are an angel and I thank God for you!

      Do you take your dog to Petsmart/Petco/other "big box" pet store or a private grooming salon? The Big Box ones emphasize volume over quality and generally don't allow their groomers to hand strip because it takes a lot of time. More time spent on a dog = fewer dogs done in a day. Private salons will do this for you, albeit for a higher price tag.

    • @remedyemily7840
      @remedyemily7840 6 років тому +3

      The most important thing you can do when visiting the groomers is TELL them what you want. No groomer can read your mind or guess that you'd like this. Most of the time when Westies come in people prefer them super short (without skirt and long legs) because it keeps them clean and it's more manageable.
      Any groomer can do this but you must explain how you'd like them clipped - simple :-)

      Pamela B Van Hecke from a groomer stand point and worked in different salons, if you pull out your phone and tell us to watch and memorize and follow every step you will have one very peeved off and insulted groomer. Being a dog groomer is a challenge on its own working with sharp objects and a moving target that dosent understand what your saying or doing. Most of the time you don’t get a good haircut because either they have a bad coat texture ( unless your dog is from a well bred line of either show dogs or your breeder is very good) most dogs from a back yard breeder or a pet shop have coats that are not right and for the life of us just don’t blend or lay nicely. OR your dogs isn’t behaving itself and causing us to not be able to complete the groom as we would like. The more wiggly and bad behaved your dog is the less we can do, can’t blend for a long time is Fido is fighting back

    I don't know what everyone else is looking at ? PET is the key word not SHOW. Julie seems to me to be a competent groomer that knows how to manage a dog on the table, that knows how to trim and give balance and shape to a dog. Her scissor technique looks good, yes she is quick but this doesn't mean it is incorrect. Good job Julie. A great stylish trim.

    • @branislavzacek2591
      @branislavzacek2591 6 років тому +2

      Caroline Chambers This is not trimming. Trimming is pulling the dead coat out. This is the wrong way, because it destroyes the coat. It is making the coat very soft. The coat can not be soft, THE COAT HAS TO BE THICK! If you're going to cut IT you're going to destroy the breed!!!

    • @juliazackova6589
      @juliazackova6589 6 років тому +1

      Branislav Zacek You are right. Shaving/Cutting makes The coat soft and straight. The coat has to be wiry and hard, not soft.

      Whether a pet or not, the fact remains that the West Highland White Terrier is a double coated breed of dog. The hair needs to be STRIPPED and not clipped. The reason being that without removing the hair, then you increase the chances of the dog subsequently suffering from skin conditions, etc. Even with a pet you need to do basic stripping, if you want your pet's coat and skin to be healthy. Healthy dog, happy dog = longer living dog. Putting that aside, as a 20 year West Highland White Terrier owner, I find her manner and technique are lacking. She is clearly incompetent to handle the breed and she needs to stay well clear. Shame on WAHL for sponsoring this. Cringeworthy. Poor dog.

    Thank you for this, it was very helpful. I am starting an apprenticeship in July and have been asked to watch videos to get a good idea of what I need to do. I watched the groomer I will be working for groom a westie today and she did it almost exactly like this, but it did not have a skirt, so I'm just going to ignore the comments that are saying this is wrong. If I've learned anything from dog grooming, it's that everyone has their own way of doing things and as long as the owner is happy, that's all that matters.

    Comprehensive steps for trimming; however, camera work often did not get the process in the frame. ...rather important if trimming is to be followed. Personal opinion that the Westie cut with skirt is not practical if your pet is not a show dog. Legs and skirt would not be something desired or easily handled by most people. Fur gets very tangled & ratty looking if isn't combed several times a day. Thanks for the tips; cute Westie dog!

    I have been a professional groomer for 35 years and have owned raised and shown westies for 43 years. Hand stripping is necessary if you want to show (Don;t like it seems to hurt dogs). Okay job but not great why weren't the feathers tapered? Blade is perfectly ok for pet groom.

    • @ritalevell6269

      I would suggested having her tested for dry eye. Mine started doing the same and I discovered he had dry eye. Vet put him on antibiotic ointment and then a prescription ointment. He finished the antibiotic in 10 days but remained on the dry eye ointment for the rest of his life. It took care of the “boogers”. If the discharge started again it was a sign of an infection so he would go on another round of antibiotics.

    Ooh! That back cut is a bit close to the skin for my liking, makes me cringe - I prefer my Westie to have more protection from the sun, etc, with longer hair on top than that, but I'm not into exacting anything. Appreciate sharing of video, thank you, it is a well packed walk through, and I'm sure many people will follow this guide easily....... what a good dog this one is ...... wonder how he was brought up to be so placid, and patient with being groomed (I'd love to know other people's experience and how they manage their westie's for grooming)? That is a lovely overall shape on the final look though, just not the cut I would have on my girl, for practicality I like short/puppy cuts as she does enjoy frolicking about, and I find it easier to daily groom.
    This lad looks so cute though 😊

      El stripping se realiza a perros de competencia cuyos dueños han acostumbrado al animal desde cachorro al stripping, además lo hacen invariablemente cada dos o dos y medio meses. Si lo haces en un perro q no ha sido tratado antes o al q no llevan regularmente al peluquero, el animal sufrirá demasiado al arrancar el pelo. Así que para perros mascota no es nada recomendable el stripping.

      Awww I'm glad to hear that =) It is a little hard to tell looking at your videos, since he's a bit of a grubby puppy hehe. But from the length of his nose and the degree of his floppy ears, his body shape and tail, I'd assume he might have 1/4 mix of something there. But I love all dogs and I understand genetics so it's still possible that he's purebred. Not that it matters coz all dogs are awesome! Haha

      With your kind of comment...I'll just tell u, you'll be surprised how many people likes this kind of hc. I've been asked to run #7c a millon times. H/C like this one cost 1/2 of one without blades.

      +Gabi Maglione The people I know who have Westies (admittedly a small sample) want their Westie to look like a Westie. Even if clipped it can be done using a comb so that it doesn't clip that short. But unless you're showing, of course it's a matter of personal preference. And I suppose a lot of people don't want to spend much time on combing. My Westie and I enjoy it because it's great for bonding though.

      U are right. ..I've been grooming dogs for over 10 years, and most of my clients hardly ever want to deal with combing their dogs. Also, when you leave the back longer that a #5 (that's what she used) in 3 weeks the dog looks shaggy again, so the shorter the blades the longer they can wait to bring it back to the groomer. Most owners are more about being practical while have the dog looking cleand and saving $ ....and trips to the grooming ;)

      +Gabi Maglione I assure you my Westie with its longer coat looks clean. It's sad that people won't bother with combing their dogs. Grooming once a month won't make them look that clean with never combing in between. However, I do my own grooming (apologies to the professionals but I simply don't trust anyone else to work on my dog) in addition to daily combing. And dogs that are regularly combed love it. Mine tends to go to sleep while being combed or even being clipped.

    If you watch closely she is being way too rough with the poor little thing. She accidentally clipped its foot and it stopped trusting her around its feet. She needs to slow the heck down. I don't really mind the style. It is completely appropriate but just the hurried anxious movements upset the dog. She is lucky the dog has obviously been properly trained. I mean I'm sure the dog doesn't enjoy it all that much in the first place but some dogs learn to love being groomed. If you just calmly and kindly groom it, reward it and praise it then it will enjoy it more.

      connor, I guess u must not be a groomer. she's not being rough with the dog. she's just trying to do her job and part of it is handling the dog so she can cut hair and not any skin. No dog I've ever groom likes theirs paws or ears being touch...specially from someone who they don't know that much (as best he sees the groomer 2hrs per month) She tries so hard to be nice that she didn't even use the table's arm with the loop to hold his head....and btw she's able to do her job this way only because that dog is an exceptional well behaved dog for the table (groomer table)

    Im a groomer, scissoring and blending in, takes far too long and if your not super confident with scissors you can cut chunks out of the dogs fur making it look a mess use guard's to blend in and scissors for finishing and trimming loose ends, each to their own I suppose

    5 Clippers is a bit short especially on the right side of the dog's neck. Looks like it was too close to the neck skin and a little raw.

    well good groomer do trimming even the dog is angry, owners should know that trimming cost but then you keep coat in good natural condition otherway you will wash a dog often and it's too bad for skin and if you clip that only for Pet class Westies

    My mum’s Westie was ‘groomed’ today by a mobile dog groomer, he looks like he’s been to the sheep shearer, awful, and she paid £25 for it (I have no idea what usual prices are). Jasper certainly looks nowhere near as lovely as the dog in this video!

    Great info for trimming! Julie definitely looks like she knows how to handle a dog. Video camera operator was too close most of the time though. Hard to tell what's going on if all you see is hair in the entire view.

    Great dog grooming videos, but when you’re filming could you not film so zoomed in? I think it’s easier to learn when it’s zoomed out a bit more. Thanks

    West Highland White Terriers should be stripped and not shaved. If you shave em, it can cause serious problems with their skin.
    Grooming of a Westie can*t be done under 1 hour, most it takes 2 hours to groom a Westie the right way. So it is very expensive and most of the owners won't pay that much for a pet groomer. It is sad :(

      How wrong you are. My boy is trimmed like this and no skin issues. He had one skin infection as a pup before even going to a groomer since then nothing. Lets strip your hair shall we?
