Pls help me with the correct way to cut the hair around my Westie's eyes. I'm concerned with his vision not his appearance so much. And thanx for the great vidro.
My Westie, Otis, is going to be 9 in September. He wore a cone for first 3 years until we could get his allergies under control. Otis is the sweetest cuddle monster there is and demands snuggles. If you sit on the floor he will lay in your lap. If you lay on the ground he will lay on your chest. He wakes up with so much joy and sass which we love. He will give his morning coos which is a adorable. I love my Westie ❤
I have a Westie (14 yo). He goes to a groomer about every 3 mos, but sometimes I need to do a little work on him if they are over booked lest he look like an old Scottish man. I really appreciate this tutorial on the head. I've been winging it all this time.
You are a gifted doggie groomer. I groom my own dog and I'm always looking for help. You have provided much here for the rounded Westie head. Thank you for your concise instructions!
Great cut! Learning how to groom my Westie mix, and the way you explained what you are doing and why you are doing it is incredibly helpful. Tyler is adorable and very well mannered.
Tyler is so handsome ….., kinda scared to get started but I’ve have horrible experiences with groomers and going to learn how to do this cause it’s going to be so much better for Cam and me. Thanks for your demonstration - you are so kind and gentle when you’re doing this. Very helpful!!!
Oh my gosh I am SO glad I found you! I am a newer groomer and we mostly do pet cuts at our shop since it's a small town on the ocean. Yours are the best videos I've seen on how to do a good pet cut. You explain what you're doing and what we're looking for in each pet in such a great way, and you share several awesome tips. You have definitely helped me advance in my new career. Not sure if you're still making videos. I'd love to see you do a poodle! Thank you for sharing your knowledge in such a great way..
Thank you I'm waiting for a job interview for a first-time groom I am trained very nervous my training dog is a Westie so thank you very much I just wanted a quick reminder
So good to see you and yet another terrier. I finally saw a Scottie at the vet a few weeks ago but I wasn't impressed with her temperament since she cowered, had whale eyes and shook. I enjoy your grooming and I'm glad to see you are well. Beautiful Westie!! 😘😘😘
Awww thank you! I have a lot of terriers! I'm hoping I can start to dip into into some other groups lol but this is the majority of breeds I get questions on. 🥴 I'm so lucky to work with a scottie breeder who take the times to work with her puppies, as I feel a lot of scotties have this weird little brain that can easily turn into a glass half empty scottie. We need more responsible breeder advocates like yourself! 💕 All is well here, busy, but a good busy. Hope all is well on your end and that the dogs aren't giving you too much trouble 😄
@@Dognormousllc lol, the only dog problem I have is my backyard bred chihuahua/Chinese crested rescue guy who has to poop at 3a.m. I never had toy dogs, always Bouviers and the Scottie. Anyways the chihuahua is the poopin-est dog I've ever had. 🤣🤣🤣
@@k-rosebouvier3359 🤣🤣that's so funny! He's right up there with cocker spaniels, who also seem to be poop machines. How does one little doggie make so much poop!
that's a lovely cut I have two brothers ready for first clip 8 month old.. little fidgets but introduced to groomer for first wash so hopefully their first cut will be a nice experience !!
Thank you, i have been scared to use clippers on my westies face incase I get it badly wrong, just followed your advice and it looks great and so much less bulky and thick.
Thank you! There is a lot going on right now, so we had to put the lessons on pause, but don't worry, there are definitely more to come. Thanks for being patient with me 😊
Thank you! My go to guard comb for heads is the A or 3/4". If they have some pretty decent size ears I need to hide a bit or a small head, I may jump that up to the C comb.
I found these little scissors at a flea market and asked my sharpener to put a groomers edge on them. The only pair of shears I have found comparable to my little flea market find are these shernbaousa.com/product/japanese-style-straight-shear/?ref=2679 They come with a serrated edge too, so they will give you a very crisp edge.
Nice job!! I used to do alot of westies but lately not so much just recently got a client with FOUR of course they all had super square heads 🤦🏻♀️were super dirty and well...lets say very Rowdy!! Anyway, i hope she liked the way they came out nice and round and cute. What brand are your curved thinners. Im looking for a pair
Oh I would happily share, I have about 3 a day! Dirty and rowdy sounds like a westie 😄 I'm sure you did a beautiful job and she would be silly not to see a job well done! The brand of shears is affordablegroomingshears.com, he has a 30 day guarantee so if they don't fit your hand, or aren't what you were hoping for, you can send them back get something different. Stephen also will help you find a handle that is more suitable for you personally. Kenchii and Affordable Grooming Shears are the two brands that fill my many scissor cases. (AGS usually has a memorial day sale too, if you wanted to hold out, but the prices are already super affordable)
My go to length is the 2 gc (3/8" or 10 mm) guard comb. It's short enough to keep the coat tight, but long enough to keep protection there for the skin. If you're looking for a slightly longer version, go for the 1 gc (1/2" or 13 mm). Tyler always gets a 2 gc because his family is very active and he needs the shorter look.
Thank you for your great videos and your narrative! ❤️❤️❤️ You are excellent at explaining the details. I appreciate your time and effort that it takes to create the content. I have a retired champion show Westie and it’s now up to me to do the grooming, as his handlers used to do all of the stripping by hand. Do you have favorites when it comes to curved blending sheers/scissors? I have a pair of Chris Christensen straight 8” ‘ chunkers’ but really need to invest in curved ones. The curved will make trimming his head so much better.
Thank you for the kind words! Congrats on your champion! All my curved blenders are from affordablegroomingshears.com. I just can't control myself on their black Friday deals and all their scissors are sturdy and hold up to the wear and tear of show and groomer life. My absolute favorite is the Mako 65t curved blender, which is the pair you'll see through all my how tos.
All my curved thinners come from Affordable Grooming Shears and these particular ones are the ones you'll find in my hand most of the time www.affordablegroomingshears.com/product/curved-mako-65t/
Hello Nicole. Beautiful work! I have tried to figure out all the scissors needed to do a Westie head.I got a little confused. Have looked at your links. So I need a small straight the little Japanese one from shernbaousa, and a curved sheer like a 8inch. What else do I need? Thanks!
I think I would like another Westie after seeing this video?! Mine died 13 years ago aged 18 and my Bischon died only 6 months ago aged only 8 !!!! Would love another dog but needs to be a rescue
Each of those will have their percentage of coat it leaves behind, or the amount it cuts. So you really want to take a look at the cut edge. The finer ones tend to cut less because there are more gaps between each tooth that does not cut hair. The big chunker ones tend to cut more, because there is more cutting edge on each tooth. There are a few other things to consider when looking at thinners/chunkers like notches in each tooth and the width of tooth compared to base of tooth. But for the most part, just look at your cutting edge. Is there more gaps than blade, then it will be more of a blender than something with more blade than gaps, which will bulk out coat. Hope that helps.
@@Dognormousllc Wow, I should have stuck with my Bouviers and Scottie, they were somehow easier to groom. A few years ago I took in my friends neighbors dog as his owner died; she was 93. He's a pekinese/king Charles cavalier mix. His coat, as you can imagine, is wild; plus, he has a malunion of the jaw and looks like he's been smoking a cigar. He's an odd guy. Anyway he has fine hair and a lot about his cape. I keep it trimmed in the summer using shears but it would be easier with thinning shears.
@@k-rosebouvier3359 yea you could just bulk it out where you take closed thinners into the coat and open, snip and removed thinners. Then comb out (I can't think of batter way to describe it). He combination does sound wild! The cigar description is the best! I can totally picture it 😂
