I made a westie grooming video because I often hear the questions how to groom a westie and can I cut them?
Trimming is the most important grooming west highland white terrier. But sometimes I cut them when they are already old or the dog doesn't tolerate trimming for health.
But I always brush hair with a coat king.
Westie grooming face always looks like a chrysanthemum.

Westies are easy to train.
Unfortunately, they are prone to allergies. But if you feed your dog properly, he will not have allergies. There are no other serious illnesses in Westies . My oldest West Highland is 14 years old

Westies are so cute but such a handful. Always trying to bite the dryer and wiggle around. They have such vigor and courage in their eyes, it’s funny how such fierceness can come in small packages.

Aren't Westies supposed to be groomed by stripping? I've always heard that their hair should never be trimmed.
Should they not always be hand stripped? My Cody had a beautiful coat.

Well, yes and no. I bought a Westie only because I wanted a Westie because of their nature, stubborness and how affectionate they are but it turned out that we got a genetically incredible Westie who is show-ready by his looks. So we'll be attending training school this fall and we trim him so we don't get disqualified from the shows, but if your Westie is only a pet then sure, you can groom him this way

I strip the West Highland, even if it is only a pet and doesn’t participate in dog shows.
But there are exceptions, for example when West Highland has too soft a coat, when West Highland has skin problems and severe allergies or the pet is old.
Stripping lasts longer than a haircut.
I love Westies too!

My second westie Sonny is never this bad, but I am in need of making my costs per month less on my own. I’m trying my best to take care of his ski. Fur is the number one issue for his skin…Hot spots from dirt accumulation.. So now I need to invest in clippers scissors and nail trimmers, along the fact that I brush him daily. Just to maintain his health. He gets coconut oil for his skin and coat also. But this is very much needed for him too.

Practically everywhere except Europe, these poor dogs are getting groomed with a mashine and not handstripped as they should be. I heard a groomer, in another video, saying that they dont have time to handstrip them...what bunch of bs. They destroy the waterproof coat of the westies because they dont have time? Aren't we paying for as much time the groomer will need?
I'm a dog groomer, perhaps we should charge you by the hour to stand there and handstrip a dog and see how much work goes into it.

I clippered this West Highland because he has skin problems and I can't to do the trimming him anymore . This West Highland is a champion and often attended dog shows, and I did the trimming him.

OMG Snow Storm is adorable❤️❤️ I love the long skirt you leave on him. His hair becomes silvery gray as it grows out, must be showing his age😂 What a good doggie. Nice work as always!

@@GroomerOK oh my goodness, you did an amazing job. I tried this on my westie, usually she goes to be groomed but I thought I would give it a go.... thank goodness she loves me and is so forgiving lol. It did not turn out so well but she is still absolutely beautiful

Sorry, but a Westie coat should be stripped not clipped. The outer coat grows in coarse and protects the dog from rain and cold. They have 2 coats, longer coarse hair that grows over short fluffy hair. They are bred to have these coats. There are tools to strip both coats. You can use clippers to clean up here and there but you do not want to "blow" the coat by clipping it, especially on the dog's back. Stripping also cleans out dead hair that can cause skin problems.

You are wrong. There are exceptions when the entire Highland White Terrier can and should be sheared! For example, skin allergies, intolerance to trimming or very old westie.
@@GroomerOK I wouldn't say your examples indicate I'm 'wrong'. these are exceptions. In fact, stripping a Westie's coat helps reduce the possibility of atopic dermatitis as it strips out dead hair. Clipping a Cairn or Westie 'blows the coat', leaving dead hair in the follicles. They have a double coat to beat the elements. The outer coat protects against moisture while the undercoat is for warmth. Don't clip your Westie.

Sometimes trimming causes severe inflammation of the skin. In this case, any veterinarian will recommend clipping the West Highland. Certainly this is an exception. Breed grooming is trimming! But there are exceptions.
Will you trim west highland if he is 14 years old and in poor health?

All wire coat terriers should be manually trimmed. As a terriers owner since 1986, watching terriers shaved - it hurt my eyes...

My Oliver absolutely hates getting groomed, and I really don't know what to do because he needs it. Just giving him a bath is really hard, we have to do it between two of us. My first Westie, Lucky, loved getting groomed.
You can give him some very tasty when you bath to him. Water must have warm. Cover the bridge of the dog's nose with your hand.
Perhaps he is afraid that water will get into his nose.
I have those little curved scissors for trimming feet...they are magic!

You recommend a Westi for first dog I think that’s crazy due to their stubbornness, and being so head strong. I recently got a puppy and he’s the most difficult dog to deal with. He starts school next week so hopefully he’ll get better . He thinks the word no is a term to use to play . He is adorable but too much for a 74 year old woman .
Was a handstrip not possible? He have a good Stripping Coat or?
This west highland terrier is very old. Stripping is already hard for him.

Must do hand stripping. Never use a machine on that kind of dog. Usually Thats why they start some kind of Skin problems
You're right. And if you can't hand strip, there are stripping tools made in Germany that work fabulously. My 3 year old westie male has never been shaved and he has a wonderful wire coat, doesn't Matt and has never has any skin issues.
This West Highland was winner a lot of dog show. And I always did a hand stripping!!!! But when he developed skin problems (at age 11) his veterinarian recommended that he be cut. And my west highland was happy! It was difficult for him to tolerate trimming.
@@GroomerOK I can tell he was a winner, he's so well trained at the grooming table. I completely understand how it's hard on him to hand strip at his age, and he's retired from shows, so I see nothing wrong with giving him the beautiful groom that you do now. You did a lovely job on him and he is BEAUTIFUL.

All three of my westies don’t have as much hair as this one! And they aren’t this well behaved either LOL
I start to train a puppy west highland to grooming from 3 months. They get used to trimming and become calmer and more obedient.

Нужен хороший шампунь каждые три дня по 15 минут на протяжении как минимум двух недель до засыхания корочек при натуральном высыхании шерсти без фена, потом аккуратное прочёсывание. Плюс антиаллерген по пол-таблеточки утром и вечером. Знаю о чём говорю, у меня Вести, мальчик, проблемы начались в год, гормоны играют, кожа очень нежная.
Спасибо. Этому мальчику 11 лет. У него есть пищевая аллергия, лечебный шампунь и антигистаминные применяются.

For westie haircut I use Geib black Perl, Rose line and thinning scissors Yento Prime

Who would think a groomer's own dog would ever be in such bad shape even before grooming :p
I watch this whole thing to see how you cut the face and you barely showed any of the face.
Westies should be always be hand stripped! Grooming with a machine could cause serios skin problems for Westies! (When the dog is trimmed with a machine, it often happens that the new hair has difficulty or is unable to push out the old hair.) 😒

This West Highland has won many dog shows. He's a champion! I have always had him hand stripped.
But when he got old he developed skin problems and just needed to be trimmed with clipper.

If the dog have very difficult allergy or a dog is old.
You can’t strip a coat that is that blown out it’s not even possible. You have to start over. This is beautiful work.

@@jackiecapecci3061 once you use a trimming machine it's over, you can't strip those areas again, or at least most of them. The dog's hair will come out much softer and it will be painful to strip it.
This guide should not be used for Westies, unless you want your dog to get skin problems, itchines and/or allergies.
BTW the dog's fur on the video is not too blown, you can see it after it gets it's bath that it's pretty fine.

Вест Хайленды, к сожалению, склонны к аллергии, а пищевая - самый сложный вид. Подобрать хороший корм собаке сложно, индивидуальную непереносимость тех или иных компонентов никто не отменял. И узнать о пищевой аллергии питомца можно лишь уже ее приобретя. Лечение пищевой аллергии гораздо сложнее чем, например, сезонной аллергии!
