    Are You Afraid of the Dark definitely had better, darker stories than Goosebumps. The books were probably better (I never bother to read them), but the hokey acting with less eerie stories made Goosebumps falter behind AYAofD.

    Ghost neighbors, vampire neighbors, neighbors
    a lot of the episodes hAve neighbors

    • @williamhiers1280
      @williamhiers1280 7 років тому +1

      That's because it's something the child viewers could relate to. Weird neighbors and what they do behind closed doors were (are?) something that fascinated kids. Look how much kids' horror fiction involves prying into the private lives of adults to discover they're an alien or a monster or something. It's because kids are curious about what grown-ups do, and make up stories about them, and shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark? really played up this angle to scary effect. You know, "Your weird neighbor? He's a werewolf!" and so forth.

    • @bezoticallyyours83
      @bezoticallyyours83 6 років тому

      Clearly those kids did not live in great neighborhoods.

    • @Zinervawyrm
      @Zinervawyrm 4 роки тому

      @@williamhiers1280 Growing up, my block had one of those neighbors the kids made stories up about. It didn't help that he was an old man named Mr. Roach, yes, really that was his name, or that his house was the only one set back the farthest on the block and literally had a hedge bush acting like a fence, and a bunch of really tall pine trees around keeping the house in shade, and an unpaved driveway was the only way to walk up to the house. It really did look like a classic haunted house tucked away in the woods, on an otherwise normal city block.
      There were stories how he'd chase kids away and if you trick or treated at his door step, he'd greet you with a chain saw! I used to have nightmares from what other kids on the block used to say about him.

      The Crimson Clown was way scarier, and had an actual screen presence. Heck, the Ghastly Grinner was scarier, if only because we saw him. Zeebo hid behind corners. His episode felt cheap and empty. Also the actor playing the main kid (who was also Megabyte in The Tomorrow People) was awful.

    I can't give a top 5 since I was like 6 when I watched most of this show, but there is one that consistently sticks out when I think of this show. I can't remember what the Tale was, but These kids go to a haunted house/Funhouse, and there's this animatronic clown that has glowing Red eyes, and a felt nose. He pops out of a door at the end of the house. One kid decides to steal the Clown's nose.(If I remember correctly to prove he was there to his friends.) Eventually the clown starts haunting the kid, showing up in his closet, and (I think) Even abducts the Kid's Mom. The Kid finally goes back and gives the clown the nose. He thinks it's over, but at the end you hear the clown laugh maniacally making you think that's not the case.
    I also remember one (it may have been the Nosferatu episode or even a different show, but I swear it was on Nick when I saw it.) That involved a Vampire in a theater (I think it was the tale of the Vampire at the Cineplex or something) But these two Ushers wind up fighting it, and one gets bitten by the Vampire, and they have to kill the Master Vampire to turn the other human again.

    This show and Goosebumps both creeped me out as a kid in the 90s but in my opinion Are You Afraid Of The Dark was scarier. Are You Afraid Of The Dark had a couple of episodes though that were more sad than scary. I can't remember the names of them but I think one was called "The Tale Of Apartment 28" or something like that and it was about a girl that befriended a lonely elderly lady. The lady wanted the girl to show up on a certain day but the girl didn't. The girl goes back to the apartment and discovers it's empty. The room becomes dark as she sees the lady, the girl apologizes to the lady for not showing up and the lady says "that was the day I died!". The other saddest episode was I think called "The Jukebox" and it was about the ghost of a soldier from World War II trying to find his girlfriend, it ends with the spirits of the two dancing. The scariest episode to me was "Dead Man's Float".

  • @Kaldary

    I think it was from Are You Afraid of the Dark (All the horror shows I watched as a kid bleed together) but there's two lines that will forever echo from my childhood:
    "I'm cold..."
    "I want to play. I want to play. I want to play."

    As a kid, I was always curious about what they threw on the fire to make it flare up like that. As I grew up, it slipped my mind until a couple of years ago, when I had the magic of the Internet and was able to find an interview with the show's creator talking about it. The answer? Non-dairy creamer. And since the Midnight Society segments were all filmed on a soundstage, usually over the course of only one or two days for the entire season, they had several incidents of the real trees they brought in catching on fire.

    When I was a kid, the coolest and scariest thing about the movie theater episode to me was learning that the movie they play and the monster that comes out of it is a real movie and the monster really does look like that. Unlike say, the episode with the discount Joker that made a person go mad and drool blue ooze. Knowing that Nosferatu is an actual movie made me wonder if the movie was actually cursed.

    Loved this show so much as a kid and I was thrilled when Nickelodeon began releasing it on DVD and itunes. It's difficult to name my favorites, but a few of them are definitely Midnight Madness, Water Demons, Frozen Ghost, Dead Man's Float, Locker 22, and the Quiet Librarian, but again it be easier to name the ones I'm not a fan of over my favorites because I loved this show so much. Thanks for the count down, it was a great list with some great memories!!

    I always felt the goosebumps stories were better made and entertaining as hell but kinda cluttered and incomplete, but there was always this calming yes eerie tone in the stories of are you afraid of the dark, like those were stories written much better, Goosebumps felt like it had goos stories but incomplete as if they were pieces of some larger story that didnt make it to the tv show, while are you afraid of the dark had simply a more fulfiling story climax in regard of the short tale that was told, they truly felt like campfire stories

    Mine was The Story of the Secret Admirer. That creeped me out when I was a kid. Still does. And I grew up watching this show. And Goosebumps. The one that scared me was the Night of the Living Dummy. I also read the books, but to actually see that book come to life, terrorized me, and the awesome part was the first episode of the three books was first aired on Halloween

    Man, I was REALLY hoping you would go into detail about the Tale of Dead Man's Float, my personal favorite episode of the series. The monster design was exceptionally well done for a kids show. While I found most episodes to be a little silly, Dead Man's Float was genuinely unnerving.

    This was a walk down Memory Lane at Nostalgia Blvd for me. Even reading the titles in the Honorable mentions, I knew what the episodes were about. I grew up on this and Goosebumps. Though in my honest opinion, I preferred "Are You Afraid of The Dark" better. But that doesn't lessen Goosebumps importance or my love for that show. I love them both.

    How was The Tale of the Dark Music not listed as number 1? Easily the scariest episode. Creepy doll, ghost carny, plus 2 children die at the hands of a greedy boy who suffers absolutely no consequences for sacrificing the lives of 2 people to the evil inside the basement closet. darkest, most disturbing episode by far.
