End times was shamefur dispray
SHWAMFOLL DESPRAI
Damn lily-livered cowards!
Restore honoru to famiry, commit sudoku
Annelise Meier
_YOU HAVEU VIORATED YOURU FAMIRY'S HONORU! SHAMEFUR DISPRAY! SKÍT!_
Wait... that wasn't weeabooese I just said...
Fukkit. Skarpheđinn FTW. I have an axe to snap all your little weeb toothpicks.
exactry!
Wow imagine if GW had decided to flesh out their world instead of killing it off to make fantasy space marines
Darrin Scott And now they're selling equally many units for an inflated price and are accused of sexism on a daily basis. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Darrin Scott Nah, making fun of Japan stereotypes is okay, if they make Catay or Ind in the other hand...
Try Endhammer or 9th Age. I prefer Endhammer personally.
The correct Term is Sigmarines I believe. ;)
Yeah. Lefties like the idea of Nippon, everything in Warhammer was a stereotype, so why not Asians too?
I dident make a single allahu akbar joke about the dudes who make themselves go boom! i desserve praise!
I’d say I’m almost disappointed but nevertheless I applaud you
Arch Warhammer cover cathay next there actually covered more than nippon btw if you want more original mentions cathay was mentioned in the end times
now you did
I have a heard about thank to a french lroe master !
It was indeed an undertaking of massive importance and difficultly. We salute you.
Other people: Thank god its Friday.
Me: Thank god its Lore day
What use is your chaos enchanted weapons against my 1000 TIMES FOLDED NIPPON STEEL, NANBAN!
Wheal it warps reality can cut anything and kills anyone it touches so pretty useful
The fact that it is made out of good steel not needing 1000 times folding to be effective.
its basically the same weapon, when everyone believes its good
If we get a hero named Sony Toyota, I'll play him all day
Considering how the land of the rising copyright is with their trademarks and IPs it’s gonna have to be something like
Sonii Toyoya
Otherwise GW would probably get sued into oblivion because in Japan fair use as a legal doctrine just flat outright does not exist….
GW probably takes legal advice from them.
Sushi Nintendo.
I've decided that is my daimyo character if someone ever runs a game set here.
You don't really hear much about sea-going powers in the historical far east (discounting riverine Chinese forces), but when you do hear of them, Wako pirates in older history or Imperial Japan in more recent terms are probably the first thing that will be mentioned.
Okay history time. In the Sengoku Jidai era of Japan the naval prowess of the Daimyo were extremely valuable due to the arrival of gunpowder, muskets, and cannons which made naval bombardment possible, just look at Nobunaga's ship the Nihon Maru. As well as the need to transport massive armies quickly across Japan without the danger of ambush or difficult terrain. Another thing that I have to mention is the names that you were talking about were originally the names of powerful samurai clans. Then the weapons you were talking about are called the Yumi, the Teppo, and the Yari which were the Japanese versions of the longbow, the musket, and the spear respectively.
War of Vengence, Aka Literally entirely the Knife Eared bastards fault which is also Surprisingly accurate.
It's ironic, there is so much lore in Warhammer, then GW basically literally nukes it all. A while later, 2 pretty awesome games based on the old Warhammer (or at least previous AoS) which garners renewed interest in Warhammer Fantasy, which is no longer available.
Yeah sure some people may get into AoS, but I'm willing to bet the turnover would be bigger had they kept WH:F instead. Also no, the average new person is not gonna check for old books or homebrew rules online. They look in the store, see nothing, gets told it's no longer for sale and then leaves.
Great work GW, you rally figured this one out... Top job mates.
Clan eshin are the original weeabo
and furries to boot...
Master Splinters first students.
The Japanese actually had a decent size Navy for a while, until it ended up on the seabed after they woke the sleeping giant.
Mike D Giants are rather dangerous creatures after all.
that statement is apocryphal
when you are so obsessed with honour that you send the largest battleship ever built into a banzai charge
To be fair, by the time the Yamato and Musashi were built, they were already obsolete. Ironically, the Japanese proved the primacy of naval aviation in fleet combat at the start of their war against the US...
Better than the Tsar's navy that sunk in a day against Japan. Great take of failure
Since Ershin was defeated in combat by ninja and Warhammer 40k has analogues its possible that there were catgirl ninjas wearing skin tight armor (analogue to Imperial Assassins) who worship a holy emperor and have katanas.
But do they have cat girls?
pwrserge You know what, I have never heard of Nipponese beastmen. They did have beastmen there, right?
If Slaanesh wills it
Maximum weebage... ninja cat girls fighting ninja rats...
Probably more eating your entrails while you sleep original neko´s are fucking scary(it seems to be a trend in the east to cutesify everything really scary)
pwrserge But do the neko ninja girls have plot armor?
nani?
Oame wa mou shindeiru...
Za Wudo!
Heh..nothing personnel, kid
iS tHiS a JoJo ReFeReNcE??
nani the fuck...
I’m glad they dropped nippon in later editions. This is literally just Japan lite both some warhammer bits tossed in. A Japanese themed warhammer faction would be cool, but not a carbon copy
Since you've talked about the general lore, or lack there of, you should now talk about how would YOU make a Nippon faction in Total War Warhammer. What units you would have, how would they play and any special features you might add to them in order to give Nippon that special flare.
Me the other day: "I hope Arch makes a video on Nippon."
Arch over 4 years ago: "I got you."
Lol Arch those are actual Japanese name, Suzuki is a „first name“ while Toyota is family name, Nissan means old geezer though XD
NIPPON BANZAI!!!
Malcador Sigilite NIPPON STEEL FOLD THOUSAND TIMES!!!!!
Breaks after three hits. No worries though, the samurai is a man of many swords...
NIPPON BANZAI
TENNŌHEIKA BANZAI!!!!!!!!!!
wait, if fantasy Japan exists, is there fantasy Anime in the Warhammer world too?
I can't wait till that universe invents Internet
Yeah its called Farsights counter attack
Warhammer fantasy takes place in its own middle ages so I'd say no but it would be funny if they did.
Joe Hermann that may answer or rise more questions.
well, there are skaven weeaboos ... a whole clan of them
For warhammer 40k a ww2 japanese army theme Imperial Guard would work really well. A largely mass infantry fantatically devoted to a divine emperor.
LOL at that description. A video on Blood Angels would be: "Ehhhhhh, pizza de pasta, Lamborghini..." :')
The Wayfarer calm down Womble.
1:55 You don't come to first and second edition Warhammer for its originality.
I love that one of the early world maps was just Tolkein's Middle Earth map turned on its side.
Some Japanese companies are clan name, the name Honda goes back to the Gempei War. Suzuki is also a very common Japanese last name.
Great video, Arch!
Didn't know a lot about Nippon and despite there being little lore about it, I learned a bunch. More Warhammer Fantasy videos would be appreciated!
So... in TWW 3 we are just going to get Shogun 2 units, Three Kingdoms units, some special cavalry for Ind, Ogre kingdoms and Eshin. With a sprinkle of Greenskins and Chaos dwarfs on the side for context.
9:50 So Sengoku Jidai Japan, but without the shogun acting as the figurehead can legitimize a unifying warlord's claim, that way the status quo doesn't change.
I think it would be cool if nippon in warhammer was half high elf
do cathay next
I could see Nippon getting a good refit and maybe even turning out good...
Wow so it's a tiny Bretonnia with no King, no Grail Knights, shittier horses and shittier armor. And they gave us Clan Eshin. Incredible. THANKS FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE WORLD NIPPON!
I want to make some Ind handgunners and artillerymen for my Wissenland army, a bit like immigrants who came back with some of the few successful caravans through the borderprinces/silk road/tilea.
The naming characters after Japanese Brands is something that pops up in anime on occasion, or really just naming characters after Brands in general pops up on occasion. Like the characters of Lyrical Nanoha where a common theme was naming a character after a car brand.
Only one good thing that came from Nippon are ninja skaven. XD
nahhh ogre ninjas are better XD
and a whole lot of slaneeshi harem.
Samurai riding Buddhist lion statues are pretty awesome, though.
Isn’t there like 3 sentences of official lore on this.
more then enough to make a 20 minute video for arch.
Forest elfranger that still seems like a bit of a stretch even for arch
3 sentences in one place. If you gather all the single-sentence descriptions from the different sources you'd get more, like, 20.
Maybe next race in sigmar? geedubs are trying to be a thing in Japan, why not make a faction that will be liked both by them and ancient neckbeards.
To be fair, Most of those Japanese name brands are actually based on either family or place names in Japan.
Would love to see Nippon is Total War: Warhammer 3, expand on navel battles too.
I fucking love arch. "sadly there's really very little information about them". Then Makes a 23 minute video longer than most other channels covering fundamental lore topics. XD
If anyone was to be listened too about Nippon, it would be, you Arch. Very enjoyable as always.
Somehow i get the feeling that Nippon and Britonia could be strong allies, right up until one side did something to fu*k up the others honor, because cultural reasons.
It's nice that they released the Tau for Warhammer Fantasy.
Damn, I thought this was going to be a Tau lore video.
Huh, was really hoping someone would do a vid on this. Arch always gets the job done right when it comes to such things
To be fair, most Japanese brands are named after the founder's family.
most brands period
I mean the Imperial Navy was top of its class till planes became the staple of fleets. The Yamato class Battleship is still to this day the greatest and last example of that size of ship in war. The Iowa class battleship was the only thing that could reasonably take it on alone. So to say Japan didn't have a strong navy in its history is a little wrong. They just misuse the hell out of its capabilities and didn't utilize planes enough. The planes they did have out at sea sunk with the aircraft carries early in the war dooming IJN completely.
Also picking a fight with the US of A was really stupid.
General Yamamato "I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve." ...
With the exception of Nisan these are actually quite valid Japanese surnames you gave there.
On the concept of 'kamikazes' : The Japanese never pressured people into serving in suicide units. All these soldiers were volunteers and sometimes even handpicked by the officers. Furthermore these units were called Tokkotai, an abbreviation of Tokubetsu Kogekitai (special assault unit)
It would be neat to see Total war warhammer introduce them.
What about the.....
BANEBLAAAAAADEEEEEE!
Barry Bend let it rip.
I think Hentai, Tentacle porn and Bukake demonstrate that Slaanesh is the main God of Nippon.
Do a video on the Night Lords legion, been waiting since Kurze lol.
Was really hoping for another Horus Heresy lore video, but then again they must take a long time to organize and record.
It's good that he covers this topic (as the lesser known factions). But sadly Warhammer Fantasy is dead....
lolfunacount official Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th Edition says no.
WH Fantasy lives in our hearts
Lol gaysworkshop
lolfunacount funny cause if it was dead then why is there about to be 3 total war warhammers
Alright, Cathay and Nippon are definitely not very creative...
The Empire (from the Holy Roman Empire). Estalia, from the mix of ESpaña and iTALIA. Tilea, a mere anagram of Italia. Bretonia, a literal province in France.
And so on, and so forth.
Yup, GW have never been very original with the naming of places.
I was waiting for GW to expand into the east in Fantasy but they demonstrated that they lack the talent and skill required to do so.
In my homebrew AoS takes place in the warp where the supreme entity of Chaos dragged the 4 prime chaos gods, the horned rat, and Nagash into its game. There are no mortals in AoS. Only the delusions of gods. Meanwhile new chaos powers are fighting in the old world for supremacy. The skaven pulled off several assassinations of the Cathay, Ind, and Nippon royal families. This resulted in the three nations forming an coalition to go and attack Skavenblight. Turns out the idea of killing the current leadership of skaven kind and the resulting power vacuum is all that is required to get one to turn on the rest. Without the guidance of the great horned rat the skaven panicked. In an act of desperation they employed unstable technology that nuked Skavenblight as the coalition forces could get there. The coalition fell apart and has started fighting with itself. Warlords arise while generals eye the Empire and surrounding nations for conquest.
Arch pretty please Sly Marbo Lore video ! Pretty please buddy :D
No mention of daimyos either? So every landed lord was just called a samurai?
Prince Sheo well... Every daimyo was a samurai anyways right?
hombreg1 not necessarily. They were sometimes promoted into daimyos, but not all daimyos were samurai. Even then, those samurai that were daimyos were daimyos first and samurai second.
Didn't Nippon trade with Nehekarra shortly after Nagash' first defeat? I recall Lahmia used gunpowder weapons they got from trading with an Eastern Empire. (Might've mistaken it with Cathay, haven't read the Nagash trilogy in a while.)
DISHONORABUR!!! the faction
I've built a Cities of Sigmar army based off of the Nipponese Samurai clans, so far it's up to almost 1100 points
I have to say, as much as I find the name of Nippon to be completely stupid, the idea of chaos samurai champions appeals to me on a fundamental level, and now it's something I've decided that I need.
The Age of Sigmar version of Arch could use some more TLC in his surroundings.
In the Warhammer mod for Mount and Blade, all the units, armor, weapons, etc. for Nippon are essectially lifted out of another mod set in fudal Yapan.
It's hard to do anything creative with a group that's just "Japan but in Warhammer," when the, "in Warhammer," part barely changes anything.
To be fair the empire is basically a rip off of the Holy Roman Empire with basically conan on steroids as there cross between Jesus/Hercules as their founder with copious amounts "cool stuff" that a bunch of nerds put into it without much thought or understanding of why these individual components existed but were again..."too cool" to not have. While Brettonia is a blunt remake of arthurian legend cranked up to 11 (like much of everything else in WF), slapped in the face a baguette, with magical "grail-knight" dudes hopped up on some elf tap water swearing undying loyalty to some elven wench in disguies. **derivative wood-elves snicker because they're OH SO "clever"...**
Which is to say that's part of why I like warhammer fantasy so much, unshamful shallow parodies, of real world cultures and beliefs! Makes for a right laugh when you take a moment to think about how ridiculous everything is! XD
Be great if Creative Assembly became the absolute madlads and made Nippon/Cathay/Ind factions fully playable. Not bloody likely but if they wanted to go apeshit for their last game installment they could probably get away with it.
i want to see what creative assembly could do with cathay and nippon, but no way games workshop would let them
If they want to make more money and successful I suggest adding the whole east in warhammer 3 including Cathay and Nippon.
all fantasy that isnt based on european history/folklore is racist! somehow...
Love your videos, small criticism: The japanese had a very powerful naval army in WWII. The US beat it with numbers, but the japanese had the #1 huge battleship on field (Yamato) and later built the biggest submarine of WWII (I-501).
What a glorious video!
It'd be very easy for CA to just import assets/models from Shogun 2 for a Nippon faction in Total Warhammer. I wouldn't complain, better than recolored empire units
To be honest while that could work I think if they ever did decide to expand there table-top game with fully fleshed out eastern factions they should do it justice! Take the time to research on Chinese, Japanese and other cultures' history, myths, folklore and legends from across the Eurasian continent to take great inspiration from when creating units, that's how I'd what it to be done anyway. There's definitely no shortage of material to work with and draw inspiration from, from what little I've encountered only barley scratching the surface of potential! Also much like how the Warhammer franchise was heavily influenced by popular dark fantasy literature from around the 80s perhaps they could do the same with these nations, by that I mean look into dark fantasy writings from other countries, some real interesting stuff out there.
Nisan by the way is 23 in Japanese.
Ni - 2 , San - 3 :D
Japanease brand names are just old noble/samurai clans that made it big as zaibatsu corporations after the Meji restoration. Basically they're old money businesses.
so did mazdamundi create the nippon nation or his lesser 2 brothers
mazdabravo and mazda-bt-50
or did they just break down after 3 years of service?
NO, YOU FOOL, DONT GO BACK TO FANTASY
I hope Total War bring these guys into their next Warhammer game with improve lore and army.
They, for real, added a faction that's basically 1:1 16th century Japanese (+ little bit of magic and naval power up) and called it Nippon??
Wow, how about adding a 1:1 18th century central European inspired faction and call it, idk, République française?
How about a 1:1 18th century post-European colonial faction called, hmm, how 'bout United States of Lustrian America?
If there isn't an Eastern Slavic inspired empire called Rus or Muskova, or a Persian inspired empire called Pars, I would be mildly disappointed. And if there is, I would be not surprised by this level of creativity for world building.
I busted a fucking gut every time you said Nipponese.
GW missing out on the weeb market, I know because I would buy an army of this
Feudal Japan's navy was pretty active, in piracy. Their warships though, were not what you would use too far from the coast and were basically floating castles.
15:31 "Japan was never a seagoing nation.Ever."
Wrong. After modernization they got pretty good at it and even acknowledged by the world. Ever heard of "Big 7" ?.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Naval_Conference
And since then they are still a nation that can build a bluewater navy.
listen again. he states that the design of the japanese ships doesn't entail them to long distance travel. this is true. traditional japanese ships were not long range nor able to go to to toe with most western ships which would blow the japanese vessel out of the water or have way more crew then the japanese ships did.
He says "ever" which is his mistake, as I have explained.
ever based on japanese ship designs. the modernization you speak of was not tech advancing japanese designs but copying western designs and tech. so the fleet that japan fields today is not a japanese one in tech origin but of western origin. the japanese in modernization did a lot of cultural appropriation.
you forgot one or two small infos theres about their involvement with other races , it is implied that clan Eshin learned some techniques from their ninjas and that ogres mercenaries are used in nippon (theres a maneater model that is in ninja lookalike gear)
I totally forgot about this tzenntch must have been there to make sure I didn't retain it.
Japan was THE major naval power in East Asia between 1895 and 1942. This was cemented by utterly destroying the Russian navy in 1905. It was also thanks to the navy that Japan managed to take so much territory between the battles of Pearl Harbor and Midway. Afterwards, however, the more advanced and numerous American navy proved the eventual undoing of the Japanese navy and empire
The Japanese in WW2 were a notable sea power, that's obviously far beyond the time frame of course
Those Japanese brand names aren't exactly surprising since all of them are actual names similar to Ford or Benz, and some are a fairly common family name, so even today you'd probably be able to get away with using them as names.
So where are the fantasy units? Yokai: shape shifting animals with hidden mountain palaces. Oni very well equipped ogres. Ryujin asian dragons, tengu a smart riddler harpy. Kitsune magic Fox spirits. I suspect you have not found the other army book out there on PDF.
I mean considere we have the "new/old" world lore now, and some leaks from warhammer total war (yes warhammer total war is now used for selling new GW books, like a cathay one) they emperror was probably a vampire/necromancer.
They'd fit perfectly into Total War Warhammer. Campaing gameplay-wise basically a violent version of Bretonia.
CA could literally just port shogun 2 into wh3 and I would be the happiest person on earth.
I like to think the dark elves came to Nippon, got wrecked, and then the Nipponese took some prisoner. Thus hentai was created.
Ah fuck yes, my favourite faction from M&B Warsword.
When you said the names of people I started choking on iced tea
If you even do these guys, could you do the Fimir aswell? Beautifully disgusting little creatures.
So basically, Shogun Total War, but in Warhammer.
I cant wait for the mechanicus to find the greatest stc, The bob semple tank.
Ah Nippon so much potential, none of it fulfilled oh well if GW are some what smart they will bring them back in AoS in some way.
I am surprised that they have not changed the name to "Nihon" since "Nippon" has nationalistic connotations..
Fun fact ninjas love using gunpowder
he really likes rolling those Rs
So this would be the fantasy version of the Tau? Lol
