The real issue is that both Flame King and Mr Heater use a proprietary system to fill their tanks instead of using a normal standard propane fill valve. Unfortunately you have to commit to either one system or the other if you decide to go with these tanks and then stick with only that valve setup. If you are already invested in flame king, I'd probably skip mr heater at this point unless you want to buy both the bottles and the fill adapter.
I have a BSME degree and worked in many product designs and high volume manufacturing since 1984. It looke like the inner plastic sleeve retention might be THE Achilles heel for this design. I suggest you reconnect with your company contact and ask them to prove/show how this issue is going to be addressed 100% of the time and that change will last over the lifetime of this products usage. Since the plastic sleeve is obviouly inserted into the hole after the shcrader valve is installed, it could easily be held in place with a proper temperature range adhesive and posibly implemented with minimum product design changes - just some factory automation additions. If they don't nip this issue in the bud they will ruin this Product's reputation before it even gets started. That would be too bad becasue there is a huge and growing market out there for such a thing
I agree 100%. The flame king tanks are the same design and I think it's made that was so you can replace the rubber o ring (that is seated below the sleeve) in a fairly easy.
@@3RiversFishingAdventures The valves on the 1lb Manchester refillable tank valves have zero plastic. I don’t understand why other companies did not follow suit.
Just finished watching all four of your videos on this topic while researching refillable 1lb bottles. VERY well done and has given me enough knowledge to make a decision. Thank you for the effort.
Thanks for watching!
I have had the same issue. The little plastic insert comes out of the tank. I called Buddy heaters and they make a repair kit and will send them out free. This is quite a common problem with some of the first versions of tanks.
Did you solve your problem? Did you receive the replacements? Let me know because I have the same problem.
@@dosdeasada yes they sent me out the repair kit and it worked very well. In fact I think it works better than when it was new.
@@im2tron I sent an email to customer service, will see if they can help. Thanks!! 🙏🏽
Sincere thank you for the follow up. Sometimes difficult to admit issues are caused by us. It takes integrity to do so.
Was the plastic sleeve stuck on the flame king filler valve?
Thank you for the video! I don’t like high pressure gas but thanks to you I can now safely refill my bottles! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Thanks for watching
Thanks for the follow up video. Glad they reached out to you and provided an answer and replacement bottle.
Genius idea with the magnets!
I’m going to buy the Fuel Keg system.
I’m up here in Canada, after watching your last video I decided I needed to get a few of the fuel kegs for my big buddy heater. I ordered 3 kegs and the refill kit from Menards. Had them shipped to Toronto area. Bought them from Menards website
To let my fellow Canadians know it was $200 after duty and taxes. Haven’t tried them yet.
Thanks for the video!
I think you'll be happy with them. Sorry about the duty and tax. :(
@originaLkomatoastit’s nice to live in the states
Great video. Thanks for sharing. 👍 😊
I like that so much more than the flame king system. I might actually buy some of these even if I have to buy a new filler manifold
Walmart has the Fuel kegs at Walmart ìn Onalaska wis now. Great vid, thanks! Very helpful.
Good to know. Thanks
Since Mr. Heater contacted you about the issue, did they provide you with a fix for that other tank or even a replacement?
Yes, they been very accommodating and even went over and above.
Watched all your vids & you’ve done a nice, thorough job reviewing… curious if the tanks work with Coleman camping stoves & propane lanterns.
Yes, I've confirmed with Mr Heater that they work with all of those.
@@3RiversFishingAdventures - Thanks, good to know… overall, do you prefer the Mr. Heater or the Flame King? You’ve got a new subscriber!
@@jarvisskooge8602 they are pretty close, but my gut is saying the Mr Heater is a slightly better system.
Does Flame King make it clear not to use some valves with their product?
Any luck finding a torch that will work properly with this keg? Thanks!
Thank you for your reviews, comparison, and update!! I'm very glad I watched these before I made my purchase. I was contemplating getting the Flame King at first, but after watching your videos I went with the Mr Heater Fuel Keg system. We do not have a Menard's here in Florida, but I happened to see them at my local Tractor Supply (as Amazon doesn't have them yet). I read the instructions and everything worked as advertised!!! Love these! Thanks again for your videos!🤩
Thanks for watching and good luck with your purchase.
Do we need to use a filter when filling these up?
No
Does the torch work with Colman disposable tanks as good as the map gas yellow tank ? Because that doesn't make any sense...
Researching to buy...
I appreciate your time spent in responding, thanks
Isn't the yellow tank a different hoter mìx
Can you get replacements for the plastic insert???
Great video. I have the same issue. I retested the tank and even with the sleeve and little o ring, it still leaked propane as you screw it in and stops once it’s fully screwed in. I tested on heaters, camp stove and other camping equipment.i have 4 of the fuel kegs just to be sure. They all did the same thing 😢
@@420ranz yes they always leak a little propane when you screw them on and take them off, but they should not continue to leak once it is attached and in use if the O-ring is bad it will continue to leak
Can the adapter be left on the 20 lb. tank and con the 20 lb. tank be left inverted?
Yes, but turn off the 20 lb valve for safety and just in case there is a slow leak somewhere in the parts
No, the flame king instructions that I read said never to leave the 20 lb tank upside down for more than 10 minutes at a time.
@@s13rr4buf3 Ah yes... I looked up propane tanks again, and it seems the reason for not leaving the tank on it's side or upside down is because of the safety valve, if inverted and the safety valve releases pressure for whatever reason, liquid propane will be released, which can cause a much bigger fire than vapor which would be released if the tank was right side up.
*Question : does your Fuel Keg's wobble ? Because mine do !*
I just bought three of these from Walmart and discovered upon returning home that the bottom ring that acts as the stand, which has all the DOT info stamped into it are less than stellar welding. Meaning they wobble standing up right, one egregiously so and the other two not near as much but still not flat....
Thank you for this update.
I was the one asking about a kid turning Fuel King ring on your last video. It is good to know that they will not release anything when the tank is not connected to the tank filler. I have a Flame King filler and tanks coming but I will probably buy a Fuel Keg filler and tanks too. I will remember to use the correct filler with each of the tanks.
I noted in this video that the Fuel Keg has a relieve valve. Do the Flame King have one?
Thanks again. As far as I can tell there is no visible relief valve on the Flame King tanks.
I enjoyed your video. Do you know if the plastic insert is available as a replacement part?
Minnesota is finally gonna get normal winter temperatures this weekend! Minus 10 forecast for Sunday night.
Did you try it on another blow torch attachment?
No I didn't. It's the only one I have here.
Good information and advice 😊
Thank you 🙏
Regarding your torch, doesn't a MAP valve work differently from a Propane device? Could that have been the problem?
I really don't know, but it's entirely possible. I thought the only difference was blend of gas.
I just contacted Mr heater but I bought their filler and 2 kegs and the second keg after filling came off with no insert or oring. It was still stuck on the fill valve.
What happens if you turn the bleed petcock while it is threaded onto torch, heater or grill? Seems to me that the real danger is an accidental bleeder valve opening while a unit is running with open flame.
The only time it will bleed off is when it's hooked up to the actual filler valve. The filler valve has an extra pin in it that actuates a pin inside the tank neck (for filling only).
I noticed when I started using the flame king ones on my grill and big buddy heater that both appliances seemed to run hotter compared to the non refillable ones. Maybe the flame king is un regulated? Either way it's. Ice to have another option.
Yeah it's possible I guess
Can these ONLY be refilled with the Mr Heater refill kit? Or can you use other refill kits by other manufacturers?
Yes, proprietary tanks and filler.
Interesting. I wonder if bleeding the air off causes less pressure/ less fills in the long run I've done the disposable for years and can only get around 14 from a 20 lb tank. Hopefully you'll test that next
I think the biggest variance is how full your 20lb tank is. If you are doing exchanges like most people do at the local convenience store, you aren't getting a full 20lb tank and in fact is usually closer to 15lb. It's always a better value to have your 20lber refilled manually at a proper refill station where you will get a full 20lbs (maybe just not as convenient though).
@3RiversFishingAdventures I generally stick to the co-op refill like you say which is best because they usually sell by the gallon. I really enjoyed how you explained btus.
@@dannyolivarus1801 yeah interesting you are only getting 14 refills then. I might have to do a test on that as well. Thanks
There now available at tractor supply's stores i have bought 10 so far . Definitely better then the refilling disposal ones .
Good to know. Thanks
How about price ???😊
Like $19
Did they come pre filled?
Watched several related videos before stumbling into your first regarding the fuel keg. The culmination of your videos are informative and much appreciated. I'm glad to see the innovation produced by Mr. Heater but the fact that they've made it more propietorty rather than universal is a huge turn off for me.
Thanks for watching. I don't think it's perfected quite yet, but I think my feedback will provide Mr Heater with some things to improve. I will be comfortable using them and overall I think it's a great product.
As for the sleeves on the tanks and on the filler valve. Looks to me like it's not just a sleeve but also a black rubber washer ring, not just the sleeve. As for the magnets....I hope that's OK, thinking maybe you could get a spark by using them? Maybe ask the manufacturer that ? Just to be sure.
Do they come pre filled? I just got two at Walmart and they feel full to me
@@kurtrussell5228 no they do not
Empty. I got four at Walmart and when I lifted one up my first thought was wow these are HEAVY even empty!
I just bought 2 of these, and I thought a regular refill adapter would work, when I went to fill it almost no gas whent into the tank and it all stayed in the neoprene hose. I just ordered the official refill it so that should work, I hate proprietary stuff.
@@Kennephone no you cannot refill these without the special filling tool because it pushes down on the relief valve to let the air out while the gas goes in
you should release the lever valve before closing the low pressure relief valve.
Are these compatible with 2 burner Coleman stoves like the Coleman classic/triton? I'd assume they are but would like confirmation before spending $100+
Yes they are. Designed to be used where any other disposable 1lber can.
Perfect! I just bought 6 tanks today I've never liked the idea of the Coleman 1lb tanks cause they weren't cost effective but I'm pretty excited about these
Thanks for the videos
Will they work with are propane augers jiffy or eskimo
Yes they are designed to work as a replacement for anywhere you are able to use a regular disposable tank.
Do The FUEL KEGG S COME WITH THE CAPS .. Thank You. Excellent Video 👍
Yes and they are better than the Flame King, but I prefer buying the nicer Brass caps instead.
@@3RiversFishingAdventures For your Info .. I just Read .. 9 Containers Fit Perfectly in a Milk Crate ..
I Love this FUEL KEGG .. I Just Now ORDERED THE KIT AND 4 CONTAINERS BECAUSE OF YOUR VIDEOS .
I Never even knew these FUEL KEGGS EXISTED... Thank You 🙏
@@jjames5475 thanks for the crate info and thanks for watching.
We don’t have those around here in north Georgia we got the green 1 pound ones
Thank you.
Just bought 9 of these cans.
Sweet. I think you'll like them
great info thx - how about coleman camp stove ?
Yes it should work fine with that
whew are you getting the Fuel Keg bottles, it looks like they are only available from Menards, no Menards in Arkansas
Tractor Supply also has them.
thanks
@@3RiversFishingAdventures
@@dannybryant4440 also they will be available on Amazon and most other typical places be the end of March.
My local Walmart has the Fuel Keg cylinders and the filler now (August 2024).
$18.25/cylinder and $29.97 for the filler.
I get 3 of the bottles the I filled up does not have the plastic piece in it I checked the other 2 and they have the plastic piece in them and I used the Mr heater refill kit so I don’t thank the plastic piece was in it wind Ibought them
Interesting, thanks for the information.
Stick with whatever you have if it is good for you.
I have around 15 of the Flame King refillables and their fill adapter. If the Fuel Keg requires a different adapter to fill their tanks I'm out...
Yes, that's the case here. If you want to use these Mr Heater tanks you will need to use the Mr Heater fill valve. I think a lot of people like you who have already invested in the Flame King system will be in the same boat. Especially since they work so well. It's sort of like power tools, once you commit to one color, it's financially tough to switch.
@originaLkomatoast If you factor in the cost of the tanks as well, it's a bigger financial commitment to switch over. For me with 6 tanks (at sale price) the switch cost is about $125
They will lose business over their propiertary filler. At least mine.
Added 4/10/23
I now realize that having the post on filler allows the valve to accept fuel. If this was not part of this new system, when you open bleed valve, gas would escape if not connected to a filler or appliance. So, if it got bumped or a child turned the valve with it not attached, that would present a hazardous condition. This new design allows for tooless refilling vs having the allen wrench for the FlameKing. That’s the difference and price to pay for convenience of going tooless filling.
I just bought a 4pk. I didn't realize they came empty 😢
I'm sorry, Mister Heater...
The fragility of that plastic sleeve is a big turn-off, for me.
Mapp gas burns much hotter than propane. Not surprising that it was wimpy with the propane tank.
Magnets!
They fall out had it happened to me
........
I agree with you on the disposable ban. I don't believe they'll be around much longer. The magnet 🧲 idea's pretty cool.
Thanks for watching
The magnets allows him to step away while smoking a cigarette. 🙂
Sorry, I just pictured someone doing that when I was watching the video.
