Very enjoyable to watch you build the colors and values. As I watched you lay the darks and the middles, it looks like a mess, and at that point it seems kind of hopeless that it will ever look like anything! Then the lights, and shaping, and the sky holes are laid on, and…. it all seems to materialize as a beautiful painting. Sometimes at that point when it seems to have come together, I feel afraid to see you touch it any further and lose it, though I know you won’t. Great to watch and learn from, thank you!
Yes same process. Acrylics are are also opaque. The difference is that gouache is great for small studies - 6x8" or 10x12" and it is very direct. Unlike watercolor and the issues with drying etc, goauche dries super quick on cold press paper. You can work quicker, adding layers without muddying color. Also getting strong color notes. Acrylic is better for larger work. It tends to get muddy when working small and quick. Not impossible of course, but gouache has its appeal. It has been the illustrator's choice for this reason. Also your brushes dont dry solid 😊
Hello Malcolm, I'm Oscar from Oklahoma, here again I'm a beginner who really likes your work and I really appreciate what you show in your videos. My sister-in-law wants me to make a very large painting, it's 30"x40" and I've never painted for someone. and I have no experience, but I have 2 questions, should I clean my brush with turpentine after each paint stroke or just clean the brush with a cloth??? Second question, can you mix thickener and retarder for acrylics at the same time? Thank you very much for your help and for everything you do for your followers.
No turpentine during painting. Use the cloth to wipe the brush. Turps is okay to wash oil brushes after painting, but there are nontoxic soaps, too. With acrylics: I guess you can mix all that stuff together but is it necessary? Not really.

Thank you! Gouache is much older than acrylics. Several centuries. Main thing is that acrylics dries to a impervious plastic finish. Gouache however can be reactivated with water. It basically is a thicker watercolor and can be made opaque with white.

Yes I agree, the middle stage is sometimes a long haul. I always try to push on and for the most part it falls into place.

Yes I do! All small works of course, but love them. There are a few in my gouache advanced class.

Very interesting study. Does gouach crack and chip off with age?
It can if painted too thick. However there are very old examples of gouache from the early impressionists still in good condition.
