  • In this video, I’m diving into a pastel landscape painting using a new brand of handmade soft pastels from Jackson's Art Supplies. These pastels remind me a lot of Unison pastels, which are my go-to for their rich colors and smooth application. Jackson's pastels are more budget-friendly, but how do they stack up against my favorite Unisons? Watch the video to find out!
    I’ll also walk you through my mark-making process, which is similar to my approach with painting-creating lively shapes instead of blending colors, placing one shape next to another to achieve a beautiful broken color effect. This is a bit different from my usual content, as I don't often showcase pastel work, but I think you'll find it interesting. Pastels are a fun and relaxing way to explore another medium and unwind creatively.

      My sincere condolences. Yes, at first, you cannot even think of picking up a brush. But then you know you are honoring your mother's memory by creating art. Then, the healing begins.

      So sorry for your loss. If your mum's encouraging you to press on with your art then she's left you a real gift. Literally the gift that keeps on giving. And don't forget " Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just turn up and get to work." - Chuck Close

    Thanks for this demonstration Malcolm. I have never seen anyone using pastel in quite this way, but it does create a liveliness to the scene. I believe I will try this en plein air
    as it would certainly involve less hauling of materials. Thanks for going out of your comfort zone, and succeeding! Also, I find your videos have a calming , contemplative quality, which I enjoy!

    That looks like so much fun! I have some pastels in the back of a drawer somewhere, I’m inspired to give them a try. If you find you have too much pastel on a section of your painting,can you scrape it off like you would oils, and then continue on top of that with a different colour? Could one use a blade or old credit card ?
    Thank you once again for a lovely demonstration Malcolm 😘

    I bought some Sennelier pastels a while back but found them to be just too soft for me. I know it was Edgar Degas' chosen pastel but I really couldnt work with them. No offense Mr Degas. I love pastel artworks. They have such immediacy and vibrancy when in tne right hands.... definitely not my hands though! 😂 You dont seem to have any problems though, Malcolm 👍

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  7 днів тому

      I have the same issue with those soft pastels. That is why I prefer Unison. These Jacksons are also robust.

    Artist you are.Could you have blended colors with a mop,to remove lines?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  12 днів тому +1

      A mop would be too soft I suspect. If you want a more blended look, then technique adjustment would be best. Also less contrasting values between colors.

    How do you preserve your soft pastel works? Do you spray fixative?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  12 днів тому +1

      Not if I can help it. Fixative seems to change the color for me. There is paper like glassine to cover the work. I also use baking paper to protect the surface. Try to avoid storing it under heavy objects. If I want to display it then matte and glass is still the best.

    I love oil pastels. Soft pastels are so messy...and the paintings smear so easily😢😮 for me anyway😮

    • @soperpa2
      @soperpa2 12 днів тому

      Funny, I feel just the opposite, but I have lots of experience and many different brands of soft pastels and papers and know how to control them from years of practice. My few attempts at oil pastels have turned into hopeless smears. It's all what you're experienced in using.

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  12 днів тому +1

      South Africa. Pastels are a challenge, but manageable. Storage solutions and friction-less covering is important if you do a lot of them.
