Hope you enjoy this review! Let me know below what your favourite Rally game is if you have one. For me, just for pure arcade-ness, has to be Sega Rally doesn't it? Won't be one for the sim-heads, but it's my pick!
Downloading this one as I type :-). It was on my radar but as a relatively low budget mobile port, I had planned to wait for a sale... I Love rally style games but I'm average at best (I like my racing games to have a nice view as I crash :-)). For me, my top 5(and half) games mainly on Xbox / PC are... 5. Dakar 18 - very rough around the edges in many ways, some vehicle types don't handle well at all but the sense of scale on individual semi open maps plus map reading make this a bit different - actually works ok with a wheel but the force feedback nearly takes you arms off in some sections... which feels 'right' somehow, given the extreme nature of the driving :-) 4. Dirt 4 - much more arcadey than some of the others here but fun to play with a controller or a wheel set up. 3. WRC 8 (and 7) - a bit more serious than D4 and less forgiving but official license does add 'authenticity'. 8 is an improvement handling wise but a lot of tracks and assets carry over from 7 (and I've put more hours into that version, hence I've included it). Works OK with controller or wheel. 2. Dirt Rally (VR) - needs a wheel as controller is poor, pretty tough and to get it running on my WMR VR headset, had to trick the drivers and set gfx to medium, so its no looker... made me ill from motion sickness when I crashed at first but the sensation of just making a sharp corner and then looking out the window to see just how far the drop was is fantastic and terrifying... 1. Dirt Rally 2.0 - a big upgrade on the original in most ways, better controller support but wheel is still the best way to play. Playing on xbox x with 4K and wheel, achieves that same sort of 'oh sh*T' moment when you barely keep it together during a bad corner. Would love this to get a VR patch. ----------- My big disappointment was V Rally 4 (on both xbox and Switch)... just felt so bland for some reason on Xbox... much preferred WRC by the same devs. I bought it on Switch based on your review, despite my previous experience on xbox as it was the only game in town and it felt the same, only with more performance issues - the close shadow pop in was particularly off putting. The patch that came out a few months after launch improved some of the rougher frame rate moments in the rally cross sections but still ended up just trading it in.
Thanks Scott, you know your Rally games! Interesting to hear where you'd consider this one. Like I said in the review, I generally find Rally games frustrating due to how much concentration is needed, but its great to have some aids to assist in RR3 particularly that braking line which really does help you at least be competitive and hence more fun.
