Also be warned that the movie version only adapts the first half of many of the early stories of the book (they don't do anything involving the tornados or afterwards), and leaves them all very inconclusive. Its fun to see Ito adapted into a live action film but head scratching and frustrating if you have not read the source material (I had not when I first saw it, so was completely bewildered!)
After receiving “Venus in the Blind Spot” in a book box, I loved the art so much I’ve collected 7 other books by Junji Ito. Although, embarrassingly, I haven’t read any of them yet. I’m thinking February will be manga month for me.
I just finished reading the 3 volumes, and the first one was just 2-3 tiers above the other two. They werent bad but just didnt feel like the spiral was that big of a threat, and felt like paranormal monsters with a splash of sprial here and there.
That's a fascinating observation about reading pieces meant to be individual episodes as a cohesive whole. I'm not sure it applies to anything on my immediate TBR, but could make for an interesting experiment down the road!
Uzumaki was one of my favorite books I read this year! Once you realize that spirals are everywhere, it certainly makes you look at the world in a different way 😂
For me it was “Glyceride” that broke me. Completely vile, unforgivably grotesque, and I love it. One of a few stories that still haunt me and it took me a few weeks before I was ready to read another of his work.
My favourite 'standalone' chapter of Uzumaki is the lighthouse one! I know what you mean about it being episodic at first but think Ito really makes it work here, as once the tornados hit the town it goes from those isolated incidences into one big over-arching storyline, so I think that shift was intentional with this work. In terms of longer form Junji Ito, Hellstar: Remina (or just Remina in translation) is the next one to go for (Gyo is great but *really* gross!), and his greatest short story is The Enigma of the Amigara Fault. I think that particular short may be bundled with the recent edition of Remina.
Excellent movie as well, with its own vibe, and wonderfully twisted characters. Most U.S. releases used Spiral for the title. Also, there’s a 4 part mini series from Adult Swim, coming in 2023, but I don’t know much about it other than it’s animated.
I loved Uzumaki. Ito really engages the visual element of the storytelling and makes full use of it. I'd say the movie is interesting, and certainly isn't bad, but it does only adapt a fairly small amount of the overall story. I do believe there's an animated adaptation coming, though. I'm definitely curious to see you read Ito's Remina as I had very mixed feelings about it. Also, Happy New Year!
@@CriminOllyBlog oh I did too! Marionette mansion, fashion model and fashion model cursed frame are my favorite stories from the shiver collection. 😊❤📚
@@CriminOllyBlog Yes! It was delightfully weird! Lots of violence, peculiar sci-fi weapons, nudes, and fan service for everyone. It went on for years until the artist finally wrapped it up in the strangest way possible. There's a prequel that's being released now.
It's funny because the episodic nature of it is what I liked the most about this story. I loved that manga a lot. Tomie felt episodic, but in a bad way (it felt much more repetitive)... 😬
The Tokyo Zodiac Murders was one of the last books I bought before starting my Read-What-You-Own challenge, and the way you describe it it sounds right up my alley. Great review of Uzumaki. I have been interested in reading some manga. Would you say that it is a good book to start with?
No havent read it. I stay away from the episodic stuff as it's also written with the intent to turn it into anime, video games, tv and/or film. The English translations can be a bit different too.
Im so happy to see book tubers (especially Olly) covering manga. It goes such a long way to get westerners to see manga as art and literature.
Thank you!
Uzumaki by Junji Into is phenomenal in more ways than one. Happy holidays everyone.

A great mature, psychological thriller is Monster by Naoki Urasawa
I've heard that's great!
I'm glad you reviewed this. I have this on my nightstand waiting for me.
Hope you enjoy it! And sorry it took me so long to reply
Watch out for those spirals...
I’m currently reading this. Cheers Olly thanks for the great reviews!
Hope you're enjoying it!

I loved Uzumaki too. I need to get to more Ito!
Me too!

I have something of a fascination with serialised fiction!
Adult Swim is working on a very faithful anime that should hopefully release sometime in 2023
Oh that sounds awesome
I just started it and it’s already pretty cool! Such a creative idea. I’m really digging Junji Ito’s stories.
Yeah his imagination is amazing

Yeah I'm looking around me now and freaking out a bit!
I have ordered it. Receiving this Jan 7th. Cant wait to read it
Hope you enjoy it!
Olly its my birthday today. U are the best gift i have received. Thanks for instigating the reader in me

Yeah that one was quite something!
Just received my Uzumaki. Super excited.
Hope you enjoy it!
I also want to order story of an eye.i like transgressive art
Uzumaki not enjoying too much. It looks more of a comic book in black and white papers with hardly readable words. I guess not my type😀
@@deepakchaube2584 Sorry to hear that!

Also I think Black Paradox (the most recent Ito to be released) is a *fantastic* weird take on a superhero origin story!
I love this book! Rated it 8/10.
Same! (Although 4/5 for me because I'm old school)

You gotta get your hands on some Gantz.

Yes - I'd say Uzumaki is definitely a good place to start
Adult swim is producing an anime version that looks exactly like the book. It's going to be incredible.
