if i wasnt a j.g.b. fan after this show i would of been on the hook 4 life, so much energy. kahn was on fire. would loved 2 have been backstage before this one . thanks. awesome THEY LOVE EACH OTHER love that stuff
One of my favorite JGB shows from my favorite JGB lineup. Melvin’s playing is so complimentary to what Jerry’s doing. Very thankful for these recordings
I was there and loved every minute of this show. Although I saw Jerry with the Dead on a number of occasions, this was the only time I saw him with the Jerry Garcia Band. Ironically, the show received a horrible review in the local rag. There has not been a show at the Music Hall for years. Hopefully that will change as I have seen workers in and around the building for some time now. The "rear" of the Music Hall stage is the stage for Public Hall, which is not nearly as nice of a place for a concert (although there have been some great ones there over the years).
I love that I get to enjoy all these older up loads!!!! I stumbled upon ur wonderful channel during the Vid lockdown!!! I am grateful I found you Gnu!!!! You Dave!!! have brightened up my life in more ways than one!!! Just putting my Love for ya out here!!! for I wear my heart on my sleeve for you!!!! Funtastic!!!! Much Love also to the Gnu Fam!!!! You all have added much joy to my life also!!! Love and Peace Happy Weedend to all you Heads!!!!
This has it all, thank you so much for posting. Jerry at his best. Summer 81 through summer 85, Jerry as a singular player (unconsistently) peaked. Fiery chops not yet diminished, accuracy not seen in his early years, even the 70s, voicings and licks that were so raw yet cerebral that most other players couldn't even fathom what he was doing- all while he was completely submerged in a perpetual battle with himself and his demons. This period is one of the many reasons I consider Jerry to be one of the greatest to ever touch the guitar. Unpopular opinion: a lot of the late 70s dead (1978-1980) was pretty messy. 1980 was especially rough. Summer 89 through Summer 93 is my favorite era of the dead. Arguably an equal peak to the dead's early 70s peak. Just my opinion though.
While I'm a fairly rabid Deadhead, and love the complexity and range and brilliance of their sound and tone, the simpler, bouncier, generally funkier sound of the JGB is just really so beautiful and immediate, amazing in its own way. In their later years, the Dead's sound was often a bit overburdened, it being harder to balance all of the players' choices and influences, whereas the JGB didn't struggle with that. I really loved the several JGB shows I experienced between '82 and '85, also during my prime Dead-going days.
WHAT IS HAPPENNING?!?!?!?!?! How unreal is this show? Unreal. How much money would it take to erase it from my mind now have heard it? No amount. There is no amount of money in this world or any or all worlds combined that I would ever take to sell this from my mind. I would trade merit for it though. Am how much merit would that be? Enough that every single molecule of every single being possibly incarnateable, down to every single molecule of every blade of grass, into the molecules of the earth and sky and water, AND on every single world, in every single direction, in every single time, without end, that ever was or ever would be- would have worlds of happiness and prosperity INSIDE EACH MOLECULE. Heavenly, uncountable pure lands equal to the grains of the Ganges in each molecule times 9 million miles worth of pure land molecules stacked on top of each other and eons wide. Until the whole of space was such vast merit that all there ever was or will be or is IS LOVE. And everybody and everything everywhere would be pure love and in complete bliss without end. Where even the word "end" is not a word. Where all it is is pure joy infinity for all infinity. But I so can't trade this for merit and Why when I don't have to. Because the merit of the act of playing this show fulfills what I just described above. There is nothing more anyone could ever do. They could come and explain, come and teach, come and service, come and liberate, come and set the perfect example. And they did. And they will. And so did he. The energy of this show is unspeakable, inexpressible, and beyond beyond the beyond of perfect beyond. I don't know what to say other than being extremely hot, it is extremely hot. That Sugaree almost burned me alive. That's the destroyer Sugaree. I know it is. Every single song in this show is a gem beginning to end. I am going to pass out now. Ps how the fuck did anybody manage to get through this show in one piece, in one mind, or with their clothes on. This would be unreal to be in. Talk about some of the luckiest people to ever live. Thank you nognu. Erased as usual but holy God, you are making my life UNREAL. Unreal.
Yes, Jerry was better on many occasions. The interesting thing was that in the 90s when Jerry was going downhill and struggling with the Dead, he played amazingly with JGB. I think with JGB, he knew he had to carry them but with the Dead, he could take a little break and turn himself down in the mix.

I think the later years of the Dead were overburdened by a lack of good new songs and Vince Welnick.

80's and on JGB was better than the Dead in a shocking turn of opinion...

@@sg1770Jerry picked his mates in the JGB, he didn't ever have to carry them. They were in synch and it made the sound shine.
This sounds like an AUD or a Matrix rather than a SBD, but in any case it's really great.
