As always, a great job. I'm definitely stealing this idea once I'm back in Canada. The best part is that this method is extremely versatile: forests are only the beginning; but pretty much anything can both look amazing and be greatly playable. Bravo!

Great trees and forest stands! Just an idea...you can put magnets on the bases and small metal on the bottom of the trees to keep them from being knocked over as easy
To speed up gap filling on trees you can over glue superglue into the joint, push it together, then sprinkle baking powder onto the exposed superglue. This will gap fill instantly.

That's a neat idea, about making it so you can switch which trees go into which pieces. Have you considered taking that idea farther? Maybe set multiple things that can be placed into those "sockets": rocks, bushes, cabins, etc.
Definitely. I had ambitions to make an entire board out of the vinyl with slots to place in a variety of terrain. Haven’t yet had time to try it out, but hopefully in the future!
I'd try a hook blade in a utility knife. First poke a hole for the hook to fit into, then cut away. I find the hook blades give you a lot of control when cutting like this.

With the double layer of vinyl, plus the caulk, these stands are pretty hefty and would take some force to move. But you could add some more rocks to the base to way it down for extra protection. Thanks for watching!

I think I'll be trying this, tried it with just the woodland scenics trees so you can just pull the tree out. Not as usable as I'd hoped, this looks more like it though.
These look fantastic! You need to throw that vinyl tile in the trash. I think that's how my granny made her wargaming terrain, get some mdf and a jigsaw and make some tough manly bases, it'll change your life. Your painting techniques really make me want to paint! pretty next level shit, mixing drybrush and wash techniques is the way to go. Good good stuff man.

You can get the armatures off of Amazon for cheap. Just look up woodland scenics trees armatures. I recommend the 5-7inch armatures. For the base, you could use cardboard but you would need to treat it with pva and go to lengths to ensure it doesn’t warp. Otherwise I still stick behind vinyl tile as a cheap alternative to mdf basing.
Does the age of the fibre matter ? We have 100+square meters of very thick (but very old- 10+ yo ) poly fiber on the attic. Around 2x2x4 m brand new roll .. is that lucky ? Oh,and 10kgs of exceptionally clean wood pellets too
You definitely could, for many games in which troops can move through trees I have always found it easier to remove the trees once troops enter the forest. However, I do think that it costs you some of its visual appeal.

I like the whole tutorial but the best is the color you painted the trees. They look very realistic and the bark color looks good.

That would have been an excellent idea. I only recently have started using magnets in my hobby, don’t know how I survived without them.

How about using a hole saw attachment for an electric drill to create the sabot holes?
That is a great idea, I will have to scout out a 2 inch hole saw!
You can get a pretty cheap set from amazon with multiple sizes. Be handy for your miniature bases too
Or drill inside the circle a series of holes with the largest drill bit you have and cut in between ?
might be a good idea to run it in reverse to avoid riping the tiles

I like to make mine without slots, that way the trees can be rearranged within the base template to accomodate units and still look good.

Does the vinyl tile have any issue with warping?
They have lasted the last 3 years without any warping yet, I think if you use a piece larger than 1” by 1” the issue could be more a problem.
what did you base the tree on? MDF? laser cut? where to get it?
I cut these from vinyl tile to be 50mm diameter. However now I buy mdf from eBay for cheap.

why not just make the trees apart of it?

Our you could have other tree toys or bushes to fill those holes.
