When I was 10 years old, i succeeded in closing my Barlow knife on my right forefinger, which bled quite satisfactorily and sent my mother into a gibbering panic. The scar is still visible 54 years later, so you know it was a really good cut. Perhaps it's just a coincidence, but I haven't had any interest in slipjoint knives since then.
EDIT: Thumb......Did that too with a Mcusta folder, cleanest cut ever
Same thing with my Swiss Army knife.
Slipjoints still have some good qualities like for example as folding knife they are easy to clean. It might not be the knives fault you cut yourself. I am finnish with ton of experience with finnish style knives, and my worst cut happened with puukko when i was about 7. I just was whittling with it, and after i was done just thrusted it into the wood sheds beam, and my hand slipped along the blade since finnish knives dont have guard traditionally. I think it was completely user error, andnot the knife designs fault. I just mean that we should know our tools. There simply isnt nothing dangerous or bad about slipjoint just like there is nothing bad about fixblade without guard, and actually today when i am more experienced i prefer knives without guards to me guard just gets in the way as i am using the knife the way i am used to using it
You hurt yourself with a tool as a child & decided to never use that type of tool for 54 years. Interesting 🤔
Same. Swiss army got me 30 years ago and still can't trust a folder with out a lock...also spiderco has made me avoid seraded blade folders.
Just wanted to say that I haven't bought any knives in quite awhile, I wouldn't call myself an enthusiast by any means either, but your videos are entertaining enough in their own right that I watch every single one as soon as they come out. The jokes, little transitions, cut away gags, all works very well and sets you apart from any other knife channel I've seen in a very good way.
Keep it up man, very enjoyable content
I'm a switchblade guy and I can't figure out the attraction to slip joints but you're right: White onions are versatile.
Are you a member of the Sharks or the Jets?
@@nicks8026 no but I can snap my fingers like a champion.
It’s honestly just a personal preference thing. There’s no reason for it beyond “I felt like it.” And yet, there are some guys out there who exclusively collect slipjoints. 🤷♂️
I tried being a "switchblade guy" but i inevitably end up being a "my spring broke again and now my blade won't move from the 50% open position until I take it apart and replace the spring for the third consecutive month guy."
True story. An XHP LUDT. I'll still buy a FS stitch when I can find one though, because I'm regarded.
I'd be a switchblade guy too if they weren't illegal where I am. As far as I know, they became status symbols for 'greasers' in the 50's here in the UK I believe... Think fonzy/john travolta look-a-likes.... thanks to those dumb asses, we have yet another restrictive law... so yeah, slip joints are better than nothing, and a nice one is better yet.
Great stuff Pete, thanks! I was hoping that it might be ‘not boring and dumb’ as I’ve struggled to see the point of slipjoints myself and have been considering this one. For me, it’s gotta have a clip or it just won’t get carried. You make an excellent point about the primary problem in slipjoint world - you can’t buy the damn things! Hard to get your hands on the big names at the best of times and harder still if you live in Australia. Seriously, WTF is up with that? If slips are so ‘just like grandpa carried’ do you reckon your grandpa would have put up with joining a bunch of fanbois and lining up for months to have a shot at buying a knife? No, he’d have just bought whatever was available at the store because grandpa didn’t have time for fanboi BS…
Do you want a knife that's the most dangerous to the user but also the least durable? What if I told you it wasn't very ergonomic? But wait here's the clincher....it's also quite expensive!
this guy gets it
Good God man, toast your hamburger buns before you put condiments on them.
There have been issues of the integral backspring cracking. Happened to mine and I’m sending it back to Lionsteel for a replacement. Love the concept but not entirely sold on the durability.
There is a titanium version. I bet it’s more durable.
I was very tempted to buy one until I read this, how was the pocket clip?
@@beyproctor7673 and considerably more expensive.
@@kinkstr1 big fan of the clip
I know why you gravitate to Lion Steel knives - they look beautiful and are high quality (and you can actually buy one in Australia!). I have a couple of really nice wood handled slipjoints which I occasionally carry as gents knives but that's it. I wouldn't personally EDC or camp with a slipjoint - just too clumsy to open & close. There are some beautiful slipjoints out there so I do get why some choose to go down the slipjoint rabbit hole. Thanks Pete.
I'm not sure why I enjoy your videos so much even when I couldn't care less about the knife being reviewed... but I do. Thanks!
It's probably the chicken, soup, and talking masonry content (though he didn't talk this time,).
You cut onions all wrong, my dude. Leave the root end on for easier cutting.
THANKS for the poultry and soup content in your knife review. This makes your knife videos FAR superior to others. (Your talking masonry is a great bonus even when he doesn't speak, as in this video.) Please continue your excellent work.
P.S. Do you have sheep or goats?
8:46 "Information" - not much of it, though :D
Or is that really the model name? :D :)
You should post about knives you're looking to aquire. Mine is virtually new (red aluminium) & I would have sent you it for a lot less than $250.
Since slipjoints are basically stupid finger traps that are always trying to hurt you the spyderco method of using a choil at the pivot to somewhat inhibit accidental closure seems to make sense if you like being able to count to ten. Once handed opening is a bonus too since, here in the UK at least, you will likely be using the thing for everything when out and about and sometimes your other hand is busy and whatnot.
Your new model slip joint looks great for being a modern one. Knives always don’t need to flip open and shut to be interesting. They only need for someone to like them. Americans collect slip joint knives for the fun of it not because there the best and newest knives. The historic value is important as is the model types made. If you spend, time learning why one model is popular. You will learn the reason it is not that boring just harder to learn about and understand.
Being where you live, your opportunities to buy them or collect them that other places have is hard for to do. What takes more thought to make, a knife with one blade or one that has many blades to make work and use. Why buy a single-blade folding knife that flips open and shut that is not as strong or faster to use, and durable as a fixed blade one?
If you carry a pocketsize Butcher knife, it just does not work as well as smaller ones for eating an apple from underneath an apple tree or eating a tomato just off the vine from your garden. Boring old slip joint knives are only boring if you don’t know why people like using them. Just like people finding out old cast iron pans, are good cooking pans. ✨🦉✨
Something I appreciate about the pocket clip on this knife is that its usage is optional. You could throw it in a slip or loose in the pocket like an ordinary slipjoint if you wanted, and have just as much a positive experience.
One thing I don't like about the pocket clip is that it's not possible to change to a left handed configuration. Big downside for me, being left handed.
Looks like a great idea, considering the pocket clip on a few of my knives is the only thing hindering the ergonomics.
Great video, thank you.
The Thrill is a extraordinary knife
Stay sharp & Peace,
Stephan
Pete man your cooking is making me hungry! I want a burger! :D I literally just saw your video and then bought this... impulse shopping much? haha (edit: I LOVE the FF/Chrono Trigger music and effects, you're my kinda dude).
Hello again, just checking in. I bought the titanium version of the Thrill. The back spring went on mine. It broke at edge of one the machined points. I never everyday carried it, down to the expense, the pocket clip and being new so babying it. Only lasted 16 months of light use before failing. Am waiting to see what happens. The knife was £230 UK pounds... Barf. The knife is well made apart from that fatal flaw, I wouldn't advise picking it up. The blade is nice, but dangerous as if it closes it closes into your index finger, ask me how I know...
So back to my Victorinox Climber and Spyderco UKPK, these knives everyday carry without any faults, and that's everyday for 9 and 5 years respectively.
BTW no critisim to Pete here just a public service announcement against the Lionsteel Thrill.
I wanted to see how the food came out but that knife has interested me for a long time. When I'm working my hands are full most times so any time I carry a two hand opening knife I regret it.
Interesting idea for that pocket clip.
I hope something like this will become widely used.
I like (and pretty much need) a pocket clip to carry my knife, but when it's out of the pocket already, I really prefer not to have anything sticking out, from a comfort perspective as well as for the aesthetics.
There was another company/ maker who had a pocket clip that came out of the handle...... off to google
@@o0FranklySpeaking0o I only remember the CRKT Swindle where the clip can be pulled out from the back of the knife.
@@miklospinter found it, it was actually Lion Steel 3 years ago
I have the Lionsteel ROK. Not my daily carry (too big) but probably the most comfortable handle in a folder.
The ff9 music gets me every time.
BTW, really like the shirt ! Even though I prefer Monica Bellucci's rear view to yours. Always welcome Pete's cooking show whenever you post, trying to identify those seasonings I'm not familiar with here in the states.
RE: the M390 drama comment. THANK YOU. I don’t know if you’ve seen the whole “drama” between Hinderer and Transparent Knives but the whole thing is assuredly stupid.
I appreciate the m390 discussion! Very funny vid as well.
Have you looked into Spyderco Slipit knives? Specifically the UKPK? (UK Pen Knife) You can get them in 110v LC200N S30V or standard CTS-BD1. I'd say they are worth looking into!
I have to admit, I am one of those guys who HATES clips. On anything. I even remove them from my pens. I just use a knife/multitool pouch on my belt.
Hate slip joints. Accidents waiting to happen. Almost 60 yrs old, haven't carried a slip joint since grade school. .🤣🤣🤣 Even my gentlemen's Moki is a lockback.
A recessed pocket clip? Now I've seen it all!
Hi where in Australia did you get the Lionsteel thrill for 250. All I can find are 419.95. Would be grateful for advice. Thanks.
Sorry Pete but you'll notice a difference between 58-59hrc and 62-63hrc m390. Tests showed anywhere from 50%-100% difference in edge retention between the two. A point or so in hardness won't make that much of a difference but 3-4 points you'll notice it.
13:20. Do me a favour and put on a Red and White banded t-shirt please? I want to test a theory. If I'm right, I've finally found him...
I really like the Gitano. So there.
Though your possums look weird (you should get American possums instead, they're not cute...possums should not be cute) and you use tomato sauce on your hamburger instead of tomato ketchup...catsup...katchup...whatever you know its just wrong. Its also Ah-loom-uh-num, al-oo-min-ium makes beer can metal sound too fancy. But I do agree with you on the old slipjoint....dumb. Bellucci is a goddess.
I know this is an old video now, but did you ever try a Spyderco UKPK? It's spoiled other slipjoints for me. Almost everything about it is just perfect. I carry one often and I don't live anywhere with lock restrictions.
It would cut better with a touch more belly. But I like the sleekness anyway. And I hate pocket clips. I never trust them, because I'm in and out of my pockets all the time. It's better if it sits fully inside my pocket where I can fish it out just fine. But the retractable clip is definitely pretty cool. It really should be ambidextrous, but I won't quibble about something I don't use. I wish it had a lock, though. 7/10
Living In NYC
I have owned many slip joints...
The spyderco UKPK is the only way to go!
This is a great entertaining and informative video. I like things what you like in that knife. I hope you improve your onion slicing technique over the year. Lion joke was awesome.
I have the Ti version of the Thrill and I want to like it more than I do. It's hard to explain. I do find their M390 a bit soft comapred to other M390 knives, such as my Liong Mah Traveller. My Fox Knives Suru is really soft compared to either. I tend to just carry my Spyderco Urban and UKPK, as I can rely on them, and replace them more easily if needed. I live in the UK so slipjoints are my only real option.
I have the Aluminium version, cannot stand the nail nick, feels like the M390 is not actually M390 sharpening and edge retention. Spyderco UKPK is my favourite slip joint.
Nice looking knife. Checked prices on some Aus retailer's sites; FARK!
You gotta try a Jack Wolf slip joint Pete👌👍✌️👌
Hit up Jack Wolf Knives. Ben would probably send you one .
I really love the pocket clip on this. I mean, I love the idea of it because I don’t have the knife. I lost my buck 110 because it slid out of my pocket in a low car seat. Of course it slid out the door instead of onto the floor. Anyway, the pocket clip on a slip joint problem solved! I like the Lionsteel Best Man but lacking the clip makes me worry it might slip out of my pocket someday if I take a ride in a Porsche or Lamborghini. I’m checking out the titanium version of the Thrill right now.
I have been eyeing for the lionsteel slipjoints for a month. I don't know, it just get inside my mind...
Thanks for pointing out that the blade is thick! Until that point I started to want one of these :D
For some reason Italian made knives are all really thick behind the edge with thick stock. So many really nice designs, they just suck at cutting things
@@stickyedge7113 Which is not very good for a knife :D
Did you suck that mouse up with a vacuum cleaner 😂 that's awesome, never thought of that
DLT has them for 130 and 220 for titanium, 300 damascus.
With the pointy hat and a blade you remind me of Link. It’s dangerous to go alone. Take this.
Where did the hipster come from lol.... Not real into slipjoints but this might be a future buy for the cool clip alone
I love the disappearing clip. I'd like to see a N690 cheaper version.
When's the review of the 'Information' pictured at 8:46?
The Gitano has a Cran Forcé mechanism. That is the reason why it is so "TSHAK"y.
I’ve been eyeing either the Thrill or Best Man for quite a while. I’m surprised to see how big the Thrill actually is. For whatever reason I was convinced it was more compact, like a traditional slipjoint.
Slipjoints definitely require a special mindset. It’s kind of like listening to music on a vinyl record in 2022. You have to *want* that kind of experience, because frankly there isn’t anything a slipjoint does better than all of the upgrades that came after them.
I see them as filling a special role in my collection, though; I carry slipjoints that have non-threatening vibes, so that people don’t have to be so nervous if I’m using a knife around them unexpectedly. The slower, more deliberate opening and closing helps keep people at ease, and more traditional slipjoint designs give off less “tactical” vibes, plus their familiar design makes people feel less disconnected from them.
Woah. I had completely forgotten that Threadless was a thing.
Best notification I’ve had in a long while
Definitely getting an aluminum version, I have the Titanium and love it!
Ha! I got mine about the same time you uploaded this video lol
As odd as it is, I chose to get this instead of a mini-adamas to join my collection.
Really dig your knife reviews. Keep the great content/editing coming.
Small slipjoints ar cool, anything of size has to lock.
I have that knife in orange, I still prefer the gitano threw use and looks
Wait a sec. Did someone make a retractable clip? No shite!
Good blade but useless pocket clip.
A modern take on a sodbuster. Well accept for the price.
would be interested to see what you think of the new Giantmouse farley
I gotten a few slipjoints from old school ones to modern and none have really gotten much pocket time after the thrill of a new knife wore off. Then I got a Cultrotech Slim and everything changed. About a 4 inch, 2mm stock of Elmax blade at 65hrc with great finish and the best edge I've ever seen on a knife, crazy fiber scales over aluminum frame weighting at about 2.5 oz. It cuts like nothing else(though I was expecting 0.1-0.2mm like the description said but its closer to 0.35mm which is still good but could be better), it's light and slim and fit and finish are top notch. Its the only slip joint I'll need and really its the only knife I'd really need but I still enjoy many others so I can't be a one knife guy.
65 hrc elmax is awesome. Looking into them now.
I am just not into slip joints. Good on you for liking them though.
Never eating at this guy's house. Who doesn't toast the bun?
This sounds like RuneScape music 😂
Cool , the Lucky with 777 Likes!...
Count me in amongst the slipjoint nuts. My EDC lately has been a Case slimline trapper in red bone and a yellow peanut, both in carbon steel. My chestnut bone sodbuster is pretty nice too. I have a few GECs which I love, but they tend to run their backsprings a little too stiff for my liking.
Ah yeah, slimline trappers are so nice but still suffer the pain-to-one-hand issue... that's a knife that I myself wished I liked it more than I do. It used to get some decent pocket time back when I was way younger, but I moved on. Personally I like the regular plain yellow handles in CV. I still have it, it's still razor sharp since the last time I carried it circa 2008.
I do love my Spyderco Information
4:54 Uh-Loo-Muh-Nuhm, that’s how we say it
Man, the moment that I see a C&A video pop up in my subscriptions, my day improves drastically. Looking forward to watching this later
Edit: dude I’ll have you know I just fuckin died at that Monica Belucci gag.
You are a cool slip joint dude.👍🏼
Pocket clip kind of sucks- your knife will fall out of your pocket if you so much as reach for anyting in that pocket. Nail nick rips my nail up when I use it to small.
i just sorta grab over the whole nick and it does ok. the clip works pretty ok for what it is, I generally use it when theres something in the pocket with it. if anything goes wrong I’ll follow up
I don't get this. Come back to the light Pete.
You really need someone to toast your buns.
I love the final fantasy music
What he said at 1:32? My english is weak.
Poor Bricky had no words...
I got a Thrill for my birthday (May 4th), I got the Nichols Scrambled Damascus Blade, Gray Titanium Handle version though.
I understand the collector aspect of GEC and why people spend years trying to get their hands on them, but if you just want a handsome, well-made traditional slipjoint your can buy Otter Messer or second-hand Queen/Schatt&Morgan knives all day and twice on Sunday.
Holy eff my ears at the end...
Love those flip flops 😜
I liked the MKM Fara
8:45 Information
Pretty sweet looking knife. Haven't bought a slipjoint since I lost my favorite knife, a CF benchmade proper. Maybe a clip would've helped me not do that.
um siiiick fox shirt
THAT CLIP!!!!
I am looking for a thin blade knife in 2,5inch length. Something with a thin handle too, like this knife in M390. It is mission impossible. I would have thought with all the oversupply of styles, it would be everywhere, but no. Something like a Swiss Army knife in M390 with a drop point.
if you can get one, the Tactile Turn Bexar could be what you are looking for
@@CedricAda thanks so much! I will research it now.
@@CedricAda spot on! It is exactly what I am after. Thanks!
I know you're not a custom knife kind of guy Pete, but there are custom traditionals in the $300 range in modern steels that are super thin that cut amazingly well. On the other end, the Pena x production knives are pretty great. All cut way better than my Lionsteel knives
Do a cut test. You know you want to.
Send one off for a regrind.
When I saw the new Pena Apache slipjoint I immediately thought of you cause it’s in k390. Definitely one to look into imo. Thanks for the vid Pete!
I was fully planning to buy this knife. I went to my local shop and got to handle it and changed my mind. I like the design, the materials, and the walk and talk. The clip is clever, but on a knife this small I just couldn't reliably put it in my pocket without dropping it or the clip not being open enough. If the ROK was sold in a slip joint form with a sheepsfoot blade I think I would pull the trigger on that one.
Stylish, yet practical. And I do like the pocket clip (I don't use clips much, and they do get in the way). This would probably do very nicely for all my regular tasks.
If you like the thrill and find the pocket clip to be a neat addition, you should look into the lion steel ROK, it has the pocket clip was lion steels flagship in 2018 and it’s a frame lock flipper
I like that pan
I really liked mine but no real retention on that pocket clip killed it for me. Ergos are suberb but the thought of the knife easily slipping out of the pocket and smashing against concrete or getting lost somewhere was bothering me all the time.
Mine broke
I feel you Pete, I always want to want a slip join, but why? There's no legal reason to own one here, they're impractical, expensive and hard to get. The only reason I can find to legitimise buying one is if I want to travel to somewhere where you can't legally carry a locking knife, but that ain't happening anytime soon.
dig the shirt!
