Great info, thanks Mark. Went to the Thames on Friday and gave hemp and tares a serious go for the first time. I’ve tried them before once or twice but didn’t get them working and lost confidence in them. This time, I fed hemp for a good hour while fishing worms for perch then had a crack at the roach. Caught quite a few reasonable ones, (plus a bleak that took a tare on the drop and swallowed it!) then as dusk came. I caught some better fish. It’s amazing how selective it is as a method. I’m going to leave the worms next time and just take hemp and tares. All the best, cheers

Hemp and tares will work until early October on many waters. It's not an infallible bait combination and cahnging conditions may take the edge off it. At the moment the cool weather isn't helping but sometimes it can come good when we get an Indian Summer. My earliest successes with hemp and tares came on the Thames, often frustrating fishing but ultimately much better. Elderberries are now in season and worth a try.

Took hemp and tares to a Suffolk lake I was fishing in September. Was told there were quality Roach present. The lake was a 50 year old clay pit of around 5 acres. Took hemp, tares, bread, the usual baits. A local asked how I was getting on and I said a bit slow, asking if I’d brought chickpeas for bait,I said no. He came back with a supermarket tin and told me to try them. Within minutes I started to catch,in just a short evening session i caught several Roach over a pound, two Bream approx 2lb+ and further Roach of 1lb 9oz and 1lb.12oz. Never used them before and never used them while river fishing, something I want to try next time on the Hants Avon when it’s safe to travel.

There's a degree of fish in a water needing to be conditioned to hemp and tares. On the Stour stretches I fish they work on 90% of the waters but that last 10% it seems the roach aren't interested, or at least would need to see far use of of these baits for them to be effective. One local stillwater that had a good head of good roach and small carp was a phenominal water for tares though the carp tended to move in and push the roach out. Whether chick peas will work on the Avon, there's only one way to find out!

I've never known Hemp & Tares to catch Roach in the depths of winter until moving house last year, the locals on our small river catch on it all year round, as Mark says, confidence is the key. Another enjoyable, informative video Mark, keep them coming. Gary.

There is no finer way of fishing than hemp on a river for roach. It's fascinating how they move up and down in the water column and how you have to adjust your feeding and set up to keep the bites coming. It's also one of those tactics where there's so many different opinions and beliefs. I for one, hardly ever bother with tares as I'm super confident in how I hook hemp and have never found tares to make a difference in the size of fish I'm catching. I've come from a match fishing background though where I am looking to catch more fish rather than the biggest fish. I almost always fish off the bottom and find the fish like to come up even further as the session goes on although I once saw an underwater video of roach feeding on hemp and while the smaller fish were taking midwater the biggest roach in the shoal were happy taking the bait off of the gravel.
Really enjoying this series, Mark. I love fishing for roach and to hear the thoughts of someone so renowned for catching big roach is really interesting to compare them with my thoughts for catching lots of roach.

Enjoying this series. Fished hemp and tares a lot this summer on the Kennet and Thames. Even had some chub on the tares. Like you I cannot get on with hooking hemp so for me it’s a handful of tares all the way.

It really is a fantastic feed and hook bait mix. Thank you for the uploads and I do hope summer/autumn 2021 is a good one 🤞👍

Love your videos,i tried tares for the first time yesterday in conjunction with hemp and did well on the Soar near Loughborough and caught some nice roach and chub, using a stick float.I tried maggots and caster also but there are so many bleak around that it can be hard to to catch anything else. I prefer the days when it was gudgion alley lol,I'd rather catch them than bleak. This video inspired me so thanks.

As a bait tares are far from infallible, especially as the weather gets colder but on their day they are excellent, and, you say, they're good at defeating bleak.

Have you ever tried wheat? It's a forgotten roach Bait but on its day, a fantastic roach bait. I've had big bags of roach on it. Feeding hemp and using wheat on the hook

Hi, Mark, have you tried urid beans, I have they are really cheap and they work well what are your thoughts Kind regards, Bill Durston

I haven't been able to buy urid beans locally at all but have got some in the last week mail order. I tried them yesterday for the first time and had some bites and fish though tares worked better in difficult conditions. I want to see if I can get some elderberries - all but impossible this time last season - and give them a go this month.

It's actually cheaper to get the urid beans mail order than drive a good distance to find a Morrisons. I've just got some elderberries so will fish with them tomorrow.

Anchor for non toxic, Dinsmore for the dust shot (lead).
