A Pinch of Flake
@MarkWintleFishing With a minimum of bait, a couple of slices of bread and some bread that's been liquidised for groundbait, I rove around a short stretch of the upper Dorset Stour floatfishing a pinch of flake on a size 16 hook trying to find roach and chub.

Casters on a Dour Stour
Переглядів 3 тис.Місяць тому
@MarkWintleFishing For a change I'm fishing with casters on the upper Dorset Stour but for reasons unknown the river is in a very dour mood. Apart from small patches of bubbles and some very small fish topping there's little sign of better fish, and it takes a move to another swim to find something big enough to put a bend in the rod. It's possible the recent hot weather created an algae bloom ...

Mixing the Baits - Does Brown Bread Work?
Переглядів 2,5 тис.2 місяці тому
@MarkWintleFishing It's the new season and I've had a short session on the upper Dorset Stour, feeding liquidised white bread and alternate white and brown bread on the hook, before finishing with maggots. As it's early season the roach aren't really feeding yet though the only ones I catch are all on white bread punch. The small chub aren't so fussy and take both brown bread and maggots. White...

Roach - The Close Season Paradox
Переглядів 2,5 тис.3 місяці тому
@MarkWintleFishing With the river close season still in force I'm aware of a disparity in how river and stillwater roach behave. On a stillwater I've been fishing regularly the roach spawned around the 8th to 10th of May and barely paused in their feeding - actually hungrier than ever - yet experience tells me that when the river season reopens on 16th June the roach will be hard to tempt for a...
Roach On Top - On the Pole

Roach - Up on Top
Переглядів 2 тис.3 місяці тому
@MarkWintleFishing A couple of recent sessions on a deep (12ft) swim revealed that the roach were more willing to feed right up in the water in the top 2ft. In the space of three days the roach had spawned, and are now hungry to feed. I've also re-invested in a diamond hook sharpener to put back the point of my favoured Drennan Silverfish Match barbless hooks which are prone to blunting.
Giant Roach

@MarkWintleFishing With a record claim of 4-13-0 in the offing - due to be considered in June 2024 - what chance of a 5lb roach in the UK? For years the British roach record has nudged up an ounce at a time to 4-4-0 but bigger fish have been reported on the Continent. Could a trout reservoir or carp venue throw up a true monster one day? What do you think?

      I have access to a number of stretches of the Stour from Blandford upstream, with waters controlled variously by Gillingham AC, Sturminster AA, Dorchester DAA, Ringwood DAA and Blandford AC. All have some lovely waters and as I found that specifying waters can sometimes lead to poaching or overfishing I tend to keep it vague. If I tell everyone where I am then I will struggle to find anywhere that's quiet to film. Someone put out a film a while back and made it very obvious where it was and it was poached for a while.

    Hi Mark, I really enjoy these short films, for one to see the nature around the UK's rivers but more importantly the fish. The future of our rivers looks good with a prolific amount of small fish, the Severn, Ribble, Wye, Trent, Dee and many others I have seen are all looking great. Look forward to the next session 👍

    Another enjoyable video Mark, keep them coming. Almost tempting me to get my Shakey Boron, ABU 506 & Contibox out on the Nene. I bumped into one of my old Octoplus Peterborough team mates last week practicing for a Nene Match, the amount of tackle on his trolley was mind-blowing. Think I'll set myself up as the Retro Matchman with all my 35 yr old tackle & see if I can still catch a few on my Tricast Sovereign pole & Daiwa System whips . Keep oiling up those clunky Mitchell Match reels mate. Tight Lines.

      Back in early 1976 a mate had just his first car, a Mini saloon (why he didn't get an estate I'll never know!) and three of us managed to squeeze in with three baskets and three rod holdalls (no bait/net bags then). Now I'm carrying more video gear than fishing tackle. Is the Nene still worth fishing? I enjoyed my practice/match sessions on there back in the 80s; last fished it in the famous winter league semifinal in early 91 when Steve Gardener won with 42lb, when there were a stack of double-figure catches - I had nearly 13lb of roach.

    • @kevintaylor4064
      @kevintaylor4064 8 днів тому

      @MarkWintleFishing I remember that Winter League semi, I'm sure Stevie G was on the cages swims - mesh screens erected on several pegs along the golf course to protect anglers, that area use to hold massive shoals of roach towards the end of the season . A bit further up is a bridge to Ferry Meadows, just above that is the Jungle - big weights of hemp roach at end of season. The Nene is still worth fishing if its holding some colour & you know where to go. Also big perch on lures - in certain areas !

    • @MarkWintleFishing
      @MarkWintleFishing 8 днів тому

      I was in the Jungle that day; had to crawl through a tunnel in the bramles to get to my swim. The guy upstream fished for chub which was a mistake as he was 2nd from last in the section with 5lb.

    Just returned from a two week family holiday to northern ireland. Naturally i did some fishing over there. Some fantastic roach fishing on some local loughs and on the river quoile. Average was 3 fish to the pound. Best trip was to the upper lough erne system. 45lb of quality roach and hybrids averaging two to the pound on pole fished casters. A superb session. Now back to the dorset stour. I may try the tidal parts as they will have some flow and depth. It seems like a very slow start to roach fishing on there this season. I only caught a couple of very small roach amongst many chublets

      The nice thing about the Rapidex is that, apart from being well-made, the micro-drag allows you to tailor the amount of drag to keep the spool under control, and decent examples are still reasonably priced; even a mint in box one is only around £100.

    A great video, thanks for sharing! Bread punch or small breadflakes are my favourite bait. I use it all the time. Mostly 8-12mm on size 12-14 hooks. On the whip, with a light bolo-set-up or bomb and feeder. A XS-sized feeder and liquidized bread workes really well for me. Primary target-species in the warmer months are roach, rudd, bleak, silver bream and bream. In the winter massive ide and chub fell for bread-punch over here.

  • @stevebrand1619
    @stevebrand1619 Місяць тому

    16 punch? are we talking 16 mm seems large for a 16s hook.

    • @MarkWintleFishing
      @MarkWintleFishing Місяць тому

      I make my own punches from brass tube and hard balsa (they float unlike commercially made ones!) so I just label each punch with the appropriate hook size. I bought the tube decades ago so it's in imperial sizes not metric, e.g. 11/32", but I can tell you the '16' punch has an internal diamer of 7.5mm, and the slightly smaller one, 6.5mm. The first punches I made were using .22" brass cartridges which were ideal for an 18. Later I bought breadpunches with interchangeable heads for the small sizes, and got some old brass ferrules for larger ones.

    Can I ask what are your thoughts about the sink rate of loose fed hemp the river stretch i fish tends to be 10ft to 12ft deep i am struggling to get my bait into the area close enough up the swim with most bites coming well down the peg,any thoughts on how sink rate of hemp affects where majority of your bites come.I seem to catch most fish six to 12 inches off bottom,are you fishing tares at full depth generaly.

    • @MarkWintleFishing
      @MarkWintleFishing Місяць тому

      Hemp should sink a bit quicker than maggots which, if I remember rightly, sink at about 8 seconds per foot of depth. This means that in all but the slowest of flows the hemp is likely to be well down the swim before hitting bottom in a deep swim. I tend to choose shallower swims for hemp and tares though I have caught on both fishing shallow in deep water e.g. at 3ft deep in 10 foot of water. Generally I've caught just off the bottom though many years ago I used to fish a swim where I would cast in with the float set well over depth using tares and put the rod in a rest and lay on. I didn't get many roach but those I did get were big ones up to 2lbs.

The previous bag of brown was so hard to get to bind at all it needed to be either mixed with some white or Gros Gardons. I've had the odd bag go fausty. I have baked a small amount since that trip so will see what it's like.

    I’ve still got my 300A from 1978. Felt I’d ‘arrived’ as an angler! From memory, it cost £18.10. I’ve always felt that the biggest advantage was the line lay. My current trotting reels are Daiwa 2503CUs, which have superb line lay, and are an easy reach to the spool. I’ve never been bothered about the ‘auto’ feature, preferring to flick the bale arm manually.

    Bread works very well on our stretch of the Yorkshire Derwent when fining down from an influx of extra water not in flood conditions,these roach very rarely see any bread its lightly fished and little or no duck feeding takes place its largely rural countryside.Normal conditions very few people use bread for roach on the Derwent,maybe its becuace the roach love a bit of colour in the water and it brings them on the feed.

    I sed to fish the warks avon a lot and you could only catch the bigger roach on hemp. Im going back 25 years or so but i can remeber catching a big net full of roach at the manor farm leisure stretch, good net roach pretty much every cast but if you put a maggot on you couldnt catch a roach. I think a lot of it nowadays comes down to the fact that there are a lot of small fish in our rivers but the bigger roach are few and far between. On the rivers i know where there are lots of big roach they seem to get caught on all sorts.
