I've had a lot of success with unsoaked micros as feed when fishing punch for roach on the Nene. I now prefer them to groundbait, especially on a clear river.
@@MarkWintleFishing I was getting piked out using crumb, and tried it as a cheap alternative to commercial dark groundbaits, but found it had more advantages other than price. It requires zero prep, you don't end up bait on your hands and tackle, it comes in a variety of sizes, roach that have never seen fishmeal before recognise it as food straight away, you can change it's density with water, and it solved my pike problem. Try it. Again, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences. I like the technical stuff, and really like the tales of oldschool angling.
One evening right in the middle of summer i fished with only sweet corn. Got 10 roach one after another and all were quite large. After that i have never managed to catch a roach on a sweet corn ever again
Hi mark. I have had quite a bit of success trotting banded 6 & 8 mm 'the source' pellets on the stour in summer for roach, tho the chub also like em alot!! I have also had roach on 10 & 12mm boilies up 2lb whilst fishing for barbel on 12lb line!! lol🤣
Not seen you mention catching Roach on worms Mark, i thought it might be worth covering especially with the rivers being up and coloured more often than not lately, had some good Roach on Lobworm when the river has been out of sorts for the more usual baits. Even had some small Roach on huge Lobby's. Gary.
One of the old Barbel dodges was to use a small black rubber bead on the hook fished over hemp. Of course Barbel are a clumsy feeder compared to big Roach so whether it would work I don't know. Certainly fake maggots I've found are pretty hopeless compared to the real thing!
what your thoughts on the Fjuka Micro soft pellets? I've seen an interview with Dave Preston and his ambition was to produce a bait that would replace maggots and bread
I tried a packet on our local pond and had quite a few tiny roach, that's mostly what's in there other than c... I didn't get many as they come, but when I shaped them like maggots they started to take. Worth a try maybe.
Another good informative video 👍

It's different approach that works. I must admit I tend to confine my groundbait use to winter fishing when there's colour and flow in the river.

I've found sweetcorn hit and miss as well but it can work.
great info, i have always had plenty of Roach on sweet corn, no matter were i have fished
I've found sweetcorn hit and miss, essential on some stillwaters but less effective than other baits on the rivers.

I've used Source bolies 15mm for chub and barbel on teh Stour going back to 2005 but yet to try the pellets; maybe next summer!

The waters I grew up fishing rarely produced roach of any size on worms and in flood conditions worms were a magnet for flounders and eels.

I've tried a few plastic substitute baits for roach but no success whatsoever and advise sticking to the real thing.

I haven't seen these; time spent in tackle shops has been minimised the last 12 months....
He won’t try them. Anything over £3 and Mark is out 🤣🤣 Why do you think he likes hemp, tares and bread? 😁
@@waynenippard5933 He's in luck then since they're only £2. He'll have a quid left for a loaf of bread. 😂
With bait it's not the cost but the value; the baits I use definitely work extremely well for roach and that's what matters.
