    Mookie is truly one of a kind. Because he has the fastest hands in the MLB, he can afford to not be so robotic in his swing mechanics like the majority of hitters.. His hands/wrists are the focal point of his swing, they're the driving factor of his success. Most hitters have to focus more on getting all moving parts to correlate at impact. Mookie still obviously needs to create a consistent swing plane, he just has more wiggle room than others to create more torque, because of his lightning fast hands. You get a guy like Donaldson, and u can tell he's very fixated on using his body as a whole for his swing, whereas Mookie is more of a feel hitter, and his hands are the catalyst of his swing.

      I found out he doesn’t use traditional baseball bat. The bat he uses is called “axe bat”

    Great breakdown. I'd say the movement forward is good. Most hitters have that movement forward. Maybe not as big, but that's where a lot of power comes from. Imagine a pitcher not exploding forward and through with their legs and just landing with a small stride and rotating their hips. Not as much power. I see a lot of kids do this at the plate. They just pick their foot up, put it down in nearly the same spot and rotate.
    Yelich gains ground, Baez does it, Trout does it, Harper does it, Davis does it, Posey does it. Look up your favorite hitter in the bigs and I'm willing to bet they all gain momentum forward with their legs.

    Crazy how his left flank hangs back (shoulders, torso) and his hips are so far forward. Like the letter S. Good awareness of his body mechanics. Impressive

      it has changed. He still have the long stride. His hands are higher, less bat movement and he stands taller now. that's from what i've seen, but haven't really put them side by side, but he has changed his stance a little.

    Be interesting to compare him and Altuve. Like you said due to his size he probably uses forward momentum more than a bigger guy to generate power.

    Barrel of bat moves forward a little with front stride foot lift, prior to scap load, similar to Josh Donaldson. Is that wasted motion, slowing load, or just part of his timing?

    • @AntonelliBaseball

      Ok I am 77 retired carpenter framer still play fast pitch softball still have home run power now when I was a framer would drive home nails one blow BUT when I made transition from conventional hammer to a rigging axe I increased that ability by 35 per cent could feel it the first swing baby also ironic Mookie was a Red Sox as Ted Williams who compared swing to driving an axe into tree Mookie great player and from everything I seen good person

    • @AntonelliBaseball
      @AntonelliBaseball  5 років тому

      Yes they do move back a bit. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!

  • @johnwilson6319
    @johnwilson6319 2 роки тому

    That move forward puts you into a reverse k position whether big or not is good position in baseball or golf maybe other things the knob down thing is a pulling the rope over your shoulder which you see in good hitters and golfers and someone making a hammer throw elbows are levers shoulders are secondary look at Mike Austin videos leader in kinetics Betts does great job of going through zone and his chin stays in v as arms straighten out he keeps bend in left elbow long could that be enhanced by axe bat not knocking it just saying

  • @arianatran4052
    @arianatran4052 6 років тому

    His elbows are relaxed. I think it's because of the knob he uses. In order for the axe knob on the bat to properly function you have to stay relaxed in the elbows like with any swing knob at the ball. But by doing this it allows his bat so much more time in the hitting zone. Complex swing but very fundamentally sound. Good shit Mookie!

    I like Mookie, but I can't say I'd instruct any of my hitters to bat like him. There's a lot going on there. The big dive is where the extra power numbers came from but without checking stats I'd have to think strikeout numbers went way up. He's got that Jr Griffey bat wrap which looks cool but with the huge dive and the stride separate how could you not just pour on offspeed low and away in a RvR matchup. Would have to think fastball high and inside as a perfect set up pitch. Love Mookie but he's gotta "cut the fat" if he wants to replicate those big numbers.

    Hey Mike - I’m sorry, I’m not familiar you but I was just looking at swings in general and tripped over this video.
    With all due respect you know what would really be great?
    If when you guys do these little swing analysis things that you all might show the whole process just a little bit of respect. “Process” being: the learning, the teaching, showing, describing etc.
    if someone asked you if you wouldn’t mind please demonstrating a swing for them I highly doubt you would just jump out of bed - pick up a bat - and take a swing. I’d imagine you might at least take a few practice swings - maybe a stretch or two - so that the swing you were going to demonstrate would be at the very least a pretty darn good swing.
    Cause of course you don’t want to look like you can’t swing and you want your demonstration to be something someone might imitate or at least learn from.
    Even if only to show a little personal pride in whatever you do.
    You guys start these videos and just start talking (or pausing) figuring your knowledge will just guide you through and you’ll have some a great little tutorial for all the people and kids who like and respect you. But it doesn’t. Simply because you may know something doesn’t mean you can describe it well. So you all end up rambling and pausing and hemming and hawing and taking deep breaths and clearing your throats (which I guess feels like you’re being really cool) like it’s the first time you ever looked at these videos and you haven’t thought about swing analysis in 6 months.
    I know it’s not that big of a deal to you but it’s a huge deal to those who know who you are and want to learn from you.
    At the very least you all could watch the video first before recording yourself so you have some general idea what you’re going to say.
    Of course it would be ideal if you guys would actually “Rehearse” before doing it for real but you know - baby steps.
    I mean no disrespect - just why not do the best job you can in Everything you do.
    You may be surprised at how good you might feel to have actually put work into these things. I can promise you whoever watches it will feel good.
    Take care -
    Teaching is a gift Mike...
