This is a great video. My Amana stopped cooling and I cleaned the coils to no avail. I could feel the air moving in both sections, but no compressor. I read somewhere that sometimes they can get "stuck" in defrost. The suggestion was to unplug for a while and then plug back in. I didn't do that, but I did turn the temperature on both fridge and freezer to "off"/--. I left it off for about 2 hours and then turned the fridge temp back up. Surprise! The compressor kicked right in! I hope this "fix" lasts!

I just bought an Amana fridge and this worry me.. are they dependable??
My take on this is that a refrigerant leak, if it was large enough, would cause the escaping refrigerant to flash off and maybe freeze some of the moisture in the air and create some ice. Though probably not cause the coil to ice over. Once the system is dry, any ice buildup would melt and drain through to the drain pan.
The presence of excessive ice build up would be evident of the system failing to maintain proper airflow or failure to defrost at regular intervals. I don't see how the lack of an iceball/ice pattern on the evaporator coil eliminates a lack of refrigerant possibility. Using gauges to see if there is pressure in the system would tell you whether you had a bad compressor or a lack of refrigerant.

I have a Amana fridge similar model to one in video. My fridge has same issues. I changed the capacitor and relay and nothing I did check compressor I can hear it running fan underneath is working all my coils are clean do hear a clicking like the compressor wants to kick on but doesn’t what else can I look at
As a side issue, what would cause the freezer to be freezing and working but the refrigerator warm?

What if the compressor is hot. Does that men it works?
Ok I have an amana bg21 my issue is that my freezer is properly old but my refrigerator gets warm and I cannot feel air flow until I open the freezer door then there is plenty of air flow into the top refrigerator section, also If I unplug it and let it sit for a couple of hours it will then work normal.
What could be causing this to happen every few months? I really don't want to replace this unit.

What if my freezer is fully frozen my fridge is getting warm and my compressor is hot. I can hear the fan going and i cleaned out the back. I’ve also unplugged it for eight hours to thaw?
I am new in refrigeration and still learning, my question is "When you have a ball of ice inside/on the evaporator, it's a sign of a restriction and not a leak? if there was a leak you would not have any refrigerant therefore no ball of ice can be formed"

98% of the time it will be a leak. Restrictions are a thing of the past with the new refrigerants and new design technology of the units.
My compressor keeps stoping cooling. When I tap it or give it a little shake it will start working.... for a while, maybe 12 hours or more if I’m lucky. I’ve checked the relay and it’s fine obviously so I’m wondering what it could be??? Please help

@@timgorman4612 could be the fan rubbing underneath the fridge on something. Better to take a vacuum to the coils and vac underneath first before getting service
I have the same model refrigerator and it is also not cooling. It was intermittently cooling, then would stop cooling. My question is, could this also not be a bad temperature control thermostat?

Hi, I have a side-by side hotpoint refrigerator that is not cooling well, Also the freezer is not cooling/freezing well too. It is over 15 years old and it has been sitting in the garage. For the last 2 weeks, noticed that food in the freezer are not frozen although they are cool. Food in the frige are not too cold. I did a couple of things for troubleshooting:
1) Cleaned and vaccuumed the back parts
2) I set cooling temp to max and did not hear compressor kick in
What could be the problem here ??

I have an Amana side by side, the doors are not even in the front and the refrigerator door is difficult to close. I have to give it a little more attention to be sure it's closed.???
