Sir, at 4:32 in order to start the defrost cycle you need to complete item 7 instruction. This reads that you need to press the down button one more time in order for the defrost cycle to kick in and the display will return to the normal operating display. Then just close the door. I do this every other day with my Amana.

Thanks. After seeing this I dug out the tech sheet. It passed so I knew I just had frozen coils. Gave me confidence to get it done. All fixed.

Great video, very well done. Thanks!
The problem with our fridge was jus too much ice buildup that blocked cold air from being pushed up to fridge compartment. Melting and cleaning everything solved the problem. Saying that, it was really helpful to be able eliminate all other possible issues.

Hello. When i come across this problem at a customers, I put the fridge into forced defrost, wait to hear the defrost heater melting the frost, replace the jazz board and program and put back into forced defrost and tell customer it will take a day or so to get back to normal. I'm outta there in less than an hour. Happy customers too! One customer told me "Sears" had been there twice before trying to fix it!

Thank you so much for this series of videos--I would have never guessed that it was the Jazz board--I totally thought it was the defrost thermostat that was the problem. I found an inexpensive factory jazz board and installed it after clearing the frost with a heat gun and blow dryer (careful of the plastic parts/places). Jazz board install took 5 minutes now all is good with the fridge. Great tip about the surge suppressor. Where do I donate to your beer fund?

If the refrigerator has never been serviced before, then the tech sheet is still there. Behind the toe grill, RHS, in a cellophane envelope pasted to the bottom side of the cabinet. Cheek to the floor with a flashlight-- you'll see it.

If you replace the control board in this fridge, you also have to program the board with the program code on the model number label. See part 3 of this series.

great advice and info, many thanks. Took my amana apart and found the compressor wouldn't turn off in defrost. Just one comment to add, and this is probably a bad idea for long term repair. I gave the relay a small tap with a hammer with the power off, to unstick it, and the board then turned off the compressor in defrost. Just if someone is desparate.

Thank you for this video it showed the exact problem I was having with frosted over freezer coils and a too warm fridge. I ran the tests you suggest. My defrost thermostat is closed and I tested the damper and that works fine. Put it in forced defrost mode and the cal rod heats up and compressor shuts off, so nothing wrong with that, so it's probably the jazz board as you say. Just wondering though whether it's possible that the problem is with the thermistor, and if it's possible to check that through the service test mode (Unfortunately I don't have the tech sheet and can't find one online)? I know you said that it's more often than not the jazz board, but I want to check the thermistor before buying a new jazz board.

Did you confirm entry into Forced Defrost mode by pressing the Refrigerator Down keypad once to select the duration and then again to begin defrost? Display should show normal temperature settings during defrost, not "F d" or "S" or "L". If you're sure you were in Forced Defrost mode, then the defrost thermostat may be open. An easy way to test is to kill power, remove the J1 connector from the Jazz board and measure resistance from Brn to Wht wire, should be around 30 ohms.

Your videos are SO helpful for anyone to use; I have done some Troubleshooting and preliminary/basic Reset operations on my JAZZ PCB-loaded units [glitchy; frequently glitchy; predicting a Replacement operation sooner-than-later].
QUESTION: After initiating a Forced Defrost [full, not short], should I still be hearing a fan? Is the fan a sign that a compressor is still on-line?
(I know this principle should be intuitive, given how straight-forward your tutorials are, but... I'm recovering from a small Stroke - so my head is still abit mushy; and some villain has prior-removed the Spec Sheet. Thieving Bastards.)

I am looking for advice on interpreting the "Control Board Troubleshooting" tech sheet that came with my Kenmore (Whirlpool) refrigerator.
    1) In the "Service Test Mode:" section in step 6 it says the control will display its "software version" is this the same as the "Program Code"?
    2) Service test 1 - The defrost thermostat result is "S" except for one time right after the frig was plugged back in and was still at room temp. than it showed "O". Other than that it is always "S".
    3) Service test 4 & 5 should they show P for a good test? Are O & S bad test results?
Thanks for any help you can give us. This tech sheet is great it just falls short of telling us what to do with the results. I'm thinking the Jazz board and or the defrost thermostat.

What if I put the board into service mode and the first test shows a "0" instead of an "S"? Does that mean I need anew thermostat instead of a control board?

Hi, my name is Mike. I Have an Amana refrigerator just like the one in your video that is doing the exact same thing but when I run the forced defrost, the heater doesn't heat up. But my refrigerator is already defrosted so the thermostat is open. Now my question is, does that forced defrost test ignore the thermostat, or does it have to be closed for the heater to work? And if it does ignore it, what is the most likely cause of the heater not working. I would appreciate any advice you have in this matter. Please and thank you!

Hi! The first test, the defrost test, it shows a zero. As if its open. By pressing the down arrow should it display an S as closed? I press on it and it stays at zero. Would this mean my defrost thermo is dead? The first time I ran it it displayed an S. Never since... Thanks for your help!!

Good question! I’m not sure. If the relay contacts and the DC power supply on the board are rated for 240 VAC then they could use the same board. But I don’t know those on-board specs.

my whirlpool has this jazz board. The defrost heater comes on and stays on for a complete defrost like it should but only in forced defrost mode. it will not automatically defrost, but putting it into forced mode once daily and letting it run works fine.
    so why???
    A. The defrost heater and defrost thermostat are working properly.
    B. The control board IO and relays are working properly.
the only thing left is the software on the board is not commanding the defrost mode automatically. Seems like they are purposely programmed to fail every 2 years like clockwork so you have to buy a new one. Forced defrost mode and automatic defrost mode both use the same IO on the board and the same exact physical hardware is used to complete a cycle. So not automatically doing this proves to me it is intentional software programming preventing or turning off the automatic defrosting of the refrigerator causing wasted electricity and spoiled food.
    am i missing something here???

I replied to a different video of yours in regards to my Kenmore refrigerator similar to this one that suffers the exact same problem you have here. I've already been hosed by a repairman for $285 and the problem still persists (he replaced the Jazz Board without any diagnostics). We have lost a lot of food thus far, and have spent a lot of money in ice every time the fridge acts up. In addition, I have also replaced my central A/C this year, and money is very tight. My tech sheets are not where they are supposed to be, and I was wondering if you could scan those ones and email them to me. Please help. Thanks!

When using the tech sheet for the control board to diagnose my refrigerator I go into service test mode, the control panel displays SE to confirm entry into service mode. Then for Software Version it displays 8 the Program code for my refrigerator is 12 is this okay or is something wrong? I can' find an answer to this anywhere. I assume they are the same thing, although everyone knows what can happen when we assume things. Any help would be appreciated.

    • @CD-ch8ex
      @CD-ch8ex 9 років тому

Tom Baratta no, program code is written on ID plate in refrigerator's fresh compartment. It is the setup the chip jazz14 will ''load'' to run all the electronics together and the software version is the version of the chip itself.
