- FREE RealVNC account. Remote Access for your Raspberry Pi from Anywhere.
I had always believed vnc remote access was only by subscription. This video shows how to sign up for free access.
A RealVNC Home account offers up to 5 remote computers for 3 users.

I'm so glad you've finally found this -it works so well on everything. My main use is remote controlling the mother-in-law's laptop for remote tech support!!!
Wish I had put it on my father in law’s laptop. He has some aggressive fake mcafee pop ups I need to sort out. 1 1/2 hours away.
I have been using VNC remotely for several years on my Pi’s. Love it.
Lee, an excellent video. I've been looking for a way to access my RP remotely for ages, even though it is HDMI'd directly to my monitor, as is my Win10 PC - but that means switching inputs. This way is much much better. Thanks.
Thank you, I was looking for something like this to support my family from MN to NV.
Been using this for over a year now. My raspberry pi is an always on machine that can send a wake on lan packet to my desktop linux computer. That way, if I ever need to stream from my computer or need my computer remotely, I can always turn it on with my raspberry through vnc, and then take control over my computer with vnc or steam remote play for gaming. It's a very cool setup and it cost me very little to pull off.
I've been switching back and forth between this and Anydesk for a couple of years now. Anydesk works really well and has the advantage of not having to install separate software for viewer and server. I also find it to be a bit less buggy but also a bit slower.
RustDesk seems to be the alternative the kids are using nowadays… you might want to have a look at that?
I always use this for my pi desktops. Enables me to do work on my LAN when I'm out and about without port forwarding. Put the pi on a smart plug too so you can boot it up remotely
I'll definitely check this out, thanks!
Very good info. I haven't used VNC so now I will download and get cracking. Thanks.
Very timely. I was just up on RealVNC because I have my Pi 3B+ up and running some python scripts. I, too, didn't want to pay, and so now I won't.
I completely forgot about this. We use to use it at work.
Glad you finally tried it.RDP doesn't work on some distro.I hope Ubuntu team fixed vnc server/viewer in the last version, didn't work at the beginning of last release.
Rdp didn’t work on my kde build. Vnc does.
Hi Lee, I am using another solution that allows me to connect remotely outside my local network using VNC to 25 devices for free. I install Zerotier on all my devices and just use VNC to connect to the zerotier device IP assigned by it.
Using VNC for some years now, never dissapointed
Thanks!
ohh and lets not forget that you can get the viewer on your smartphone too. So you can always get in touch with your pi or other devices. It's very cool.
everyone who recommends rustdesk need to understand the curret issues. i made a video about it on my channel but here is the tldr:
1. doesnt support arm 64 bit os
2. does not support Waylan
3. needs to have an hdmi connected at all times
A German YT Channel recently presented the free OpenSource 'RustDesk' Remote Software and it also has a Server to install locally.
very interesting. This might be a good feature for the Orange Pi-5? 😎 Thank you.
TightVNC
Been my preferred server & viewer since grad school, 10+ years
VNC is better than using USB Hdmi video capture on my Chromebook. The usb capture using a camera app, i loose almost 2'' of 11.6'' screen. There is an app which gives full screen , however cant remember the name. VNC gives almost full screen and i can enlarge with the touch screen. Now i just need to figure out the audio output. Good video. Mahalo
Tailscale and NoMachine. Both are software options built-in to DietPi.
Team viewer works almost as well.
just the sound is a bit flakey over remote.
I wanted remote access for my SDR radio so I coould remote in from my chromebook and use a windows pc running SDRplay.
Works alright.
I can even use my ipad to remote to a windows pc
FYI, the free Real VNC Home Plan has been retired as of 17th June 2024. You must now pay for all plans.
I just had an email from them
I tried VNC for a while, but it can be laggy. I have since switched to using Nomachine, which also has free-to-use and is really really responsive.
If you have Steam installed on your computers, actually, Steam Remote Play can actually be used to access the desktop too. Steam Remote Play is super responsive but I found that it doesn't work very well with JP106 keyboards (some keys don't get transmitted properly).
Yeah, came to say the same, I use noMachine for everything, currently have it set up to goto a linux box in a server to write an apps, Also you can create "shortcuts" that you can share between different os's to make setting up access to a computer much easier. And also yes, I use it on My Raspberry Pi 400 with ubuntu, I then oVpn into work and Nomachine to the computer i want to use, Using the Pi400 for remote work isn't too bad at a pinch.
Wonder if adding virtualgl virtgl (not to be confused with vigil) would speed up the responsiveness even more.
RustDest is my remote desktop of choice, being OS none of that paying nonsense
Funny that u should talk about it cuz i just used it the other day. My 4GB model used to be my daily driver after my 18yr old pc died which i had a Surface 3 tablet that replaced it but cuz its not repair friendly & parts r discontinued for it i bought a framework laptop & my pi's went unused for the most part. My old 4GB pi got turned into a diy nas in my living room & my 8GB Pi sat unused on my desk for the past yr simply due to the fact most of the programs i use & the games that i play aren't Linux compatible. I used the viewer via my laptop to run my pi & cuz VNC has a device pass through i was able to update my pi that i haven't used in a yr.
Just remember to store/print ur backup codes in a safe place cuz once u lose those codes if u ever forget ur password for whatever reason they won't be able to unlock ur account as the Home account credentials aren't stored. Only the Enterprise tier is saved. Was told by them that sometimes the Professional tier is saved but it's a 50/50 shot as it has less features than the Enterprise which has all the features cuz it's the IT Edition. If u lose ur password under Home account u have to get ur account deleted before u can recreate it. Had that happen to me before.
Not sure if you had a chance to read my comment on a previous video. But I am looking for a PoE adapter that is compatible with the ice tower coolers. If you find one I think it would make a great video.
Does it matter whether the connection is added in Team tab or does it just not work for me because I added it in Address book tab? It works, just not globally.
I'm personally a big fan of RustDesk its free and open source.
Any time I've tried using VNC with my Pi devices that run a GUI, the display doesn't work properly.
For example the trash can would be in the middle of the screen. Couldn't figure out how to fix it, so went back to xrdp.
The Home option doesn't show up under Pricing any longer. They have renamed it as Lite and only list it at the bottom of the main RealVNC webpage. [correct at time of this post, March 2024]
I even never knew the VNC is not free or at least there is a part of it which is not free...
hello friend, i need a simple tip from chile!!!
I want to do the process the other way around... open from the pi 400 a win pc with remote desktop or something similar
Should be fine it’s available for many systems
www.realvnc.com/en/connect/download/vnc/windows/
Hasn't the RPi foundation offered this for years? I know my account has worked for years and still does.
5 PC's maximum though.
Yes, its just the free version isn’t that obvious before signing up
Im a bit confused. What if you just do a port forward of the vnc port in your gateway to your pie? I have done that for 25 years. Or have I missed something?
Sounds like you may have a static IP address many isp’s use dynamic addresses. Alternatively a Vnc account signed in doesn’t rely on ip addresses
Hello, thank you for this info. Unfortunately, it seems like RealVNC changed their options and the free version is no longer available.
I just clicked on sign in and sign up. It states no card details are needed. I didn’t go further as I already have my free account I regularly use. At what point are you saying it stops allowing a free account?
Hi, it's seems like that option that you chose is no longer there, at least I couldn't find it. Only 14 day free trial versions were available to me.
Complete novice question, but how do I launch i the program on the raspberry pi os? I have downloaded and installed but it isn't where I launch my other programs from (the desktop toolbar).
You enable it in Raspi-config then use the viewer software on another device to remotely acces your Pi
Should the router to witch the raspberry pi is connected have the port forwarding capability?
Not for this setup you can connect from anywhere
Hey lee
Darling OS got updated once again! :D
This time i think you will enjoy it more as it has everything that you asked for from your last review (Except apt lol that's a debian thing)
More info on discord
Looking forward to hear your thoughts once again 👍
Is the viewer application optimised for Apple Silicon?
I’m not sure. It works great on my M1 Mac
Hi Lee. Did you know if it alr works ? Because the website changed and I didn't find that thing
Sign up for a free account it says no need for a card
I didn't see Android in the viewer list. Can you control from an Android phone?
Yes
play.google.com/store/search?q=Vnc&c=apps
But not as a server
use remminna for vnc access for clinent for free and x11vnc as server also free,,,,,
Can you watch video remotely using VNC?
It’s not fast enough to be good with vnc. Game streaming is fast enough so the technology exists
💯
No audio with the free version.
Tightvnc is free also
Did you tried after I told you in the last video?
Before that, but thanks anyway 👍🏼
@@leepspvideo I was using it a long time and I was wondering why you didn't use it
@@H-W I had thought remote wasn’t free
Looks like the free option is no longer available 😞
Try here
manage.realvnc.com/en/auth/sign_up?_gl=1*dticvj*_gcl_au*OTM0NTMzMzI3LjE3MDgxNjk1NDI.
It says sign up no card details needed
Just comment...
Hey Buddy,
Can I Run my Pi 24/7
there are people that have ran pi's for years without powering down. projects such as pihole often run 24/7 with no hassle. just set a heat sink on it and let it rip. of course, hardware failure can happen with any device, so be mindful of whatever you set up on it
My pi 4 8 gb ram runs 24/7. I have installed a heatsink cover onto it, it was very easy to install and it makes the pi look awesome.
Yes
Please enjoy this community engagement comment
;p
You are so nice
look up.. StarLink Dish Hacked With $25 Device...hacker used a Pico to hack the starlink dish
RustDesk seconded. Far superior, doesn't require account creation I don't think, works a lot like TeamViewer, including ease of use
Thanks!
