I've always wondered if Watari might have been the world's greatest detective before L. It would explain his desire to create an orphan designed to groom brilliant detectives. It makes sense when you think about it, and there's a decent amount of evidence to back it up.

And that network is actually cover for illegal human genetic engineering research. Through the orphanages they could bring up kids without anyone questioning where they came from. When Watari died they said he had founded orphanages all over the world. I just figure when a gifted orphan turned up at any one of those places that they would be transferred to Whammy's House.

The popular theory of L being autistic is extremely misinformed, even Near doesn't truly qualify. They are gifted.
Not everyone there is a genius they find out and if they aren't they get thrown away or something
Personally, I tend to think Wammy's House isn't straight up black and white. Linda was able to grow up and become an artist apparently, so pursuing their own goals is something the kids at Wammy's House are allowed to pursue their own goals. I see Wammy's as irresponsible and neglectful, but not intentionally malicious towards the kids. I imagine they took steps to improve things after A and B, but they've still got a long way to go. Even ordinary public school really messes kids up and has kids who die by suicide because of the pressure, so it's natural that the pressure of Wammy's would be even more. What I mean is, they do need to take a lot of steps to make Wammy's House a healthy place for kids to grow up, but I don't think they're evil.
Obviously, I know this place isn't real, so if I sound like I'm taking this too seriously, I'm not. Just throwing my interpretation out there for the sake of discussion.

THAT will put a severe psychological strain on a person once they realize what those numbers mean. Near and Mello seem pretty normal for super genius's anyway. I mean Light is way more fucked up than Mello and he didnt even go to wammy house, he had a classic middle class upbringing with a police chief for a father and a loving mother. A is the only true failure of Wammy house as far as we know and it seems the fixed that issue.
Hey duo, you know in the Deathnote relight where L is describing monsters to the orphans and mentions that he himself is a monster? Do you reckon that was some kind of awareness of how messed up he could potentially be and that it may have been an unconscious warning to them.

This is an interesting theory however there is a plothole in it. I present to you the Death Note specials which were short stories that explained details about L and Watari's relationship. The one titled "L One Day" showcased all the hoops Watari is willing to jump through to made L happy (including inventing a human washing machine) and the one titled "L Wammy's House " shows how L first became a detective considering these facts it is impossible to say that Watari doesn't care about L. The rest holds up though.

I was just about to comment this it makes the creepy theories even more disturbing

I disagree with L having to rely on others. He always solved mystery’s on his own, save for the Kira case where he single handedly narrowed down the suspects to Light and some others. Also he gets close to Light in the Kira case suggesting he does know how to be social. He likely solved other cases by getting to know his suspects, like a police officer infiltrating a drug gang. Furthermore, the speech L gives at the to oh entrance ceremony was also another demonstration of adequate public relation skills as he delivers the speech in a loud clear voice while receiving a cheer that was as audible as the one received by Light, who is seen numerous times throughout the anime to be popular and socially capable. The only reason why some of the other students thought L to be weird was not because of the way he delivered his speech, but was of the way he was dressed. L was not socially awkward. Pertaining to the social ineptness of Mello, he befriends a group of mafia members demonstrating his ability to communicate with others and establish relationships. As for the social ineptness of Near, he was not raised by Watari, but by Roger so blame him for all of Nears social faults, Mellos lack of care for human life, and to a lesser extent Matt’s lack of care for the world. In sum, Watari created the perfect detective, L, and left Roger to create the next L. While Roger created geniuses (Matt Near and Mello), he certainly created them with flaws, however that is not Wataris fault.
Yeah the to-oh university speech L gave made me think how it’s not that he doesn’t have social skills, but rather, he just prefers to not use them when it’s not necessary.

Not an intellectual reliance, more like reliance to do simple everyday things. I’ve read some time ago that many geniuses can barely do simple tasks on their own like tying shoelaces. In L.file no.15 you can see Watari putting his cloths for him, and making a human washing machine and doing all the maintenance to support L. So when it comes to everyday tasks, L is reliant

In the side manga, File No. 15, it is stated that Watari brought L in and cares for him when his money has been multiplied 20 thousand the initial amount. Watari promptly spoiled and pampered L in ways to provide him with anything that he desires, all to get to his wish as well.
A is an initial given to him, a short form for, 'Alternative'.
Beyond Birthday isn't a real name either, it's a name that B came out with during his serial killings. B is also initials given to him, a short form for, 'Backup'. Implying that if A fails, B exist.
Sparing both Mello and Matt, Near is also a f*cked up nickname- as if stating that he's *NEAR* into being the next L. The L Program alone is already messed up as it is; a line of kids being molded into becoming a certain someone, never their own individuals. They live in pressure and expectations of someone who gave them a home, in exchange of their smarts.
The fact that neither of A and B's real name were mentioned just straight up sad...
Sure Linda grew up and pursue her goal as an artist, but the initial plan for her is to become the next L. I don't know what happen next to her- was she provided with same as L? Or did she off herself, living an dependable life on her own?
L already begin working on his first case when he was 14, and L Program starts not too long after. The fact that L had these lines of children that is meant to REPLACE him when he's dead is just as f*cked up. They don't even care when Mello and B ran away from Wammy's, because Near and other children is still there, pliant to their goal. The existence of the Wammy's House is also messed up, considering that they gathered only gifted orphans from other orphanage. They even put Roger, someone who, ironically, HATES children, as their caretaker.
The theory of L being dependable on Watari is also applied in this; in the File No.15, it is stated that L likes to keep himself clean, thus bathing frequently. However, when put in bath, L does not move. Thus, Watari invented a Human Washing Machine so that L can washes himself. He didn't even bother to ask why L didn't move, or take L to therapy regarding of that trait. Other than that, L also needs _help_ in putting his *clothes* on.
In conclusion, I 100% agree with this theory. I also have so many points, but it's going to get so long people will hate me.
It's also sad, in a way that the people L trusted only been using him, if not straight up hurts him.
I'd be willing to hear the many other points you have. This theory interests me very much because of dark and how it all fits so well.
Watari is one of the best examples of Kira's evil. He was killed for no resaon because of Kira (I understand he didn't kill Watari but he made it happen).

Well I may be wrong because I haven't read the manga, but from what I remember, light doesn't say to kill watari and also, Watari did work with L, yes not a reason to murder, but in light's twisted mind he is a possible complication for Kira, and if it could stop light's plans, it is justified to kill him anyway, for the good of the new world

Honestly, I agree with this theory. Analyzing L and Watari too deep will show how messed up their relationship really is. I actually write a fan fiction about L's time at Wammy's House, and I go into how messed up a person Watari is to L. I take some liberties, obviously, but I was trying to think about how L became the person he is in the manga.

This theory reminds me of the anime Monster. They had orphanages that trained orphans to become the perfect soldiers, the perfect killing machine.

It just goes to show how Death Note is such a good series with all of it's stuff on justice and who's right and who's wrong when in reality we all have our wrongs but we're to focus on other's wrongs to see our own just as seen in the show. Excellent video

I've wanted to do a video on this for so long to be honest. XD
You need to read the manga one day and Wammy's house manga special. Watari is not the evil person that made L a certain way. L was like that ever since he was found as a nameless orphan. He was also clearly someone with asperger's which could have been why he was abandoned in the first place because when he was born, there clearly wasn't as well known since it was in the 80's when he was young, (he was born 1979). Watari loved L like he was his son, he would never do any of that to him. Good thing it is only a theory.
The orphanage was explained more in the live-action Netflix movie
There’s a pair of one shot by the creators published around the time the non-canon live action movie “L Change the WorLd” was released. In it, we get hints of what pre-L orphanage was like. It seems that they have been a normal orphanage house run by Wammy and Roger. In L’s first appearance, he was brought into the orphanage by Wammy who was chided by Roger for bringing home another kid even though their budget it dwindling. So Wammy was probably a compassionate grandpa who couldn’t bear leaving a kid on the street, hence, he opened an orphanage.
L proves to be pretty eccentric day 1, as he beat up some kids and claimed to be the best, then proceeded to lock himself in a vault after demanding a computer. It is said that little L instructed Wammy to invest in stocks and managed to not only save the dwindling budget of the orphanage but made them absolutely loaded. It was only around his early-mid teenage years that L discovers the thrill of solving crimes, and the story of the detective begins from there.
Because of this, I don’t think that Wammy was established with solely gifted kids in mind. I do think though, that post-L, the tone shifts to a much more competitive environment. While some of the “graduates” or Wammy’s turn out to be canon arsonists and certified assholes with crippling social anxiety, they are only part of the population. Linda for example managed to become a fairly successful artist, and no doubt there are other kids who were housed there as well. So perhaps like any school, there’s the top kids who have the weight of worlds on their shoulders which will in one way or another crush them, and then there are others

He was born with the Shinigami eyes. He was able to know when people would die, including his loved ones. This took a toll on him, slowly driving him to madness. Also, BB's aim wasn't to become L, but to surpass him, creating a mystery that not even L could solve.
And that's why he suicides leaving the case opened

i actually believe it was just a few people who where broken if we see the clips when L was talking to the kids at whammy's house there was a group of kids who felt non pressured even though they where all geniuses i believe they where just a few who felt ambitious and put their mental heath on the line to become L's successor and maybe who knows L doesn't need those social skills he enjoys solving mysteries alone him opening up to light made him lose after all a true genius with full of ambition wont let their social life get in the way L didn't need his social skills he had all he wanted or possibly needed watari was just there as his extra support just like a good parent he did raise L and provided with L's special needs i also believe A got pressured as well to the point they ended their life however i think it was for a different reason i don't think the studying and being pressured to be L made him kill himself it could possibly think that once he's in L's position they might of thought they would mess up and fail everyone that's what could of happen lastly i also believe Near, Mello or L did not want a normal life either way they couldn't when you're. a genius you will never see the world as everyone else does your brain is more aware of everything than an average human being thats just messes you up its like a child who knows psychology at a young age it messes them up and spoils their years ahead knowing what everyones true intentions are

hey duo review! While rewatching death note, I noticed a massive oversight in the higuchi arch. When Higuchi is being detained by the police, L hands the notebook to Light. Once the note is in Lights position higuchi suffers from a heart attack. At this point, L has established the Kira’s default method of killing is a heart attack. Wouldn’t L, being the genius he is, notice that higuchi died when light got his hands on the notebook. Even though light didn’t use the notebook to kill higuchi it still sticks out to me as a massive oversight in lights reasoning

The way to kill someone is to write their names. So Higuchi dying after Light gets the book might be suspicious but it doesn't mean anything if he doesn't see the name written anywhere.
At first, I thought Watari was his butler but we can't deny that L wouldn't be a loveable character without Watari, just like Jason torturing Kaneki.

Wammy found L one day as a kid, and let be himself as he is. He never made L who he is today but its just L's nature of behaviour. If you have read the manga prequel on this Im sure youll get what I'm talking about.

You missed Dr. Kujo, or “K”. Who trued to wipe out the whole world with a disease. But, Watari has also made normal orphanages. And Mello seems to have decent human interaction, I think he is just competetive at heart. Finally, I think BB was driven mad because of his Shinigami eyes, not Wammy’s House

Alright il take a crack at this one. It has been scientifically proven that those with higher intelligence (above 120) have a higher chance of depression, this goes up to a staggering 65% of those with IQ over 132 having sever depression. According the the listed IQ of each individual character the lowest IQ person from Wammy house is Mello with a 175. The people from wammy house seem to have the same tendencies as actual normal orphans and those with astonishingly high IQ. Normal prep schools have suicides do to pressure and bullying in school is a textbook trademark of future killers anyway. BB also was born with the damn shinigami eyes, he knew when everyone around him would die, that will fuck you up.
Lets not forget that Linda was able to freely walk away from Wammy house and became a painter. Also take a look at light, his IQ is estimated in canon at about 200, second only to L himself. He was a star student, had a loving family, strong moral father figure, was active in athletics aswell as studies, aaannnnddd was bored with everything around him. A typical sign of depression.
What about mat he’s not that bad but he doesn’t really know how to handle some situations like when he was about to get shot he reached for his gun when there were like 20 guards around him
K was a moderate support needs autistic with a gift for puzzles that went into his orphanage, and he took full advantage of L’s gift for puzzles and support needs and continues to do so. And once L doubled his fortune he set himself to be L’s primary caregiver.
Also note that L probabky requires a fair bit of support like help washing, multiple times a day due to sensory issue, but watari, uh didn’t want to do that multiple times a day or help him manage it on his own, or we’ll have the patience with his sensory needs to work around helping him cope to manage cleaning on his own and thus invented au man washing machine. With drying function.

Near communicates just fine with people. In fact, he displays plenty of leadership attributes.
Just a question. I recently saw death note, and I was wondering why everyone sees Light as cold heart'ed and evil compared to L. They both are just motivated by internal drives, right? They both want to do what they feel is right. I know Light took more lives, but is that the only reason why people think hes' evil compared to L? Light's end goal also kinda changed to become this power-freak, but they're both motivated by internal emotional factors at the end of the day.
What do you guys think? Curious to see others perspective on this.
I think they see Light as more evil because we actually got to see Light's perspective, he was the protagonist after all so we were more in tune with how he treated those around him. It could also be because L was very forward about what he did, usually telling exactly what he was doing IF he was asked whereas Light would lie and assure himself
ofc Light killing way more people will be a factor and I think its because Light killed innocents purposely, not to say L didn't do heinous things (torturing both Misa and Light after all) but in the end I think it comes down to quantity - Light has killed 124,925 people whereas L has tortured two (rightfully guilty) people that we know of
I actually read the original post that the original creator of this theory made. I think its really interesting and it does make you think about What Watari's true intentions were.

it is canon that Watari took L to amusement parks, parks and concerts when L wanted to. and L has a good set of acting skills (pretending to be asahi on the phone, befriending light and misa, and so on) so he obviously has been around people and in social situations, he just doesn't feel inclined to act like everybody else.

So I've heard about A and his suicide a lot but I was wondering where it is mentioned in the official sources since I've read bb murder case, I don't think i remember reading about him.
It was briefly mentioned after the reveal of BB as B
A's suicide is what drove B to madness, so I think it's mentioned somewhere in the BB Murder Case? Not too sure - can't remember the book all too well.
